I enjoyed this! Ang action-packed, opo. This is a solid start for a series. The way na I am craving for more after reading that last page means na I am so hooked with the story and how everything will unfold!

Akala mo, naexperience mo na 'yung action sa volume 1 pero nung natapos ko siya, ramdam ko na there's so much more to tell and to unpack!

The characters and their costumes, sobrang badass! The kampilan and the bahag, delicious! The baybayin? Yas! The fight sequence, the story, and Maharlika aka the Philippines as the most powerful nation? What a delight! What a delight??? Hahaha!

Thank you so much for the free copy, Sir Rexy and thank you for introducing me to this world and these characters! I want more! Can't wait for the upcoming volumes.

Ps. Feeling ko I can fix Akira. Ay? Hahahaha!

transports readers through a uniquely filipino perspective of a new age time and space odyssey that has also somehow has a nostalgic feel. for fans of akira and evangelion and steins;gate, peering into a what if world where it was the philippines as a great imperial power, making you question if the ideal of an empire really is a thing to aspire towards. also, art is AMAZING- john ray absolutely kills it in this series, doing an excellent job bringing the world to life. excited for more!!

We get to know Mal and Yari in this story. Mal is a former war hero who is just looking forward for his next score and collects newspaper clippings of the Pasig river as his hobby. Yari, who is Mal’s old friend, pays him a visit and offers him a mercenary job. The job is to hunt down the people running a separatist movement while also working with the presidential elite security team called the Agilas.

In what seems like a normal day at a new job for Mal, he encounters a strange briefcase that holds clues to a secret at the heart of history itself.

What’s really imaginative from this story is how cyberpunk it feels but remains Filipino. You’d probably want to enjoy this book while eating bulalo and siomai. Volume 1 collects the prologue up to Track 5 and it is still an ongoing story. But all 144 pages of this volume feels very tight in terms of story telling. it does not make you feel lost in it’s world keeping it familiar like the Pasig river. While also setting up the emotional anchor to keep you connected with Mal and Yari. And that makes it important when you get to the plot twist at the end of Track 5.

If youre a fan of Japanese anime or manga, the artwork follows along that style while keeping it clean and eye-catching. The details left me in awe especially those pages where we see more of the structures of this world. The action panels are also really dynamic and keeps you hooked at what’s happening.

What is really unique for this book is the lettering. It uses Baybayin to depict the sounds and it adds to how very Filipino this book is. You don’t have to worry about translating Baybayin because there are small captions on them.

Once you’re finished reading Maharlika you will have to pressure the creators to finish the story because they will leave you with a gripping cliffhanger. But overall, Maharlika is a very fun read that everyone should start picking up.

What an awesome first volume with such a cool premise: what if the Philippines were able to fend off the Spanish Conquistadors with their advanced technology and go on to become the driving force of technological innovations (flying cars, floating war ships, mechs equipped with AI mirroring human personalities capable of supplying sass and comedic relief) around the world and thus situating themselves as the leading global superpower.

This series provides a much needed (at least to me it is) aspirational message for Filipinos: that we are, as individuals and as a collective, capable of achieving greatness. Much like Wakanda is a beacon of hope that inspires black excellence for black people around the world, Maharlika inspires that same excellence for Filipinos too.

The comic is jam packed with action and ideas conveyed through a variety of mixed media, providing world building and creativity to the info dumps in a refreshing way. I’m hooked from Volume one and I can’t wait to see how this series progresses over time! 🇵🇭✨

"It's just a line, it can't possibly hurt you."

The line:
"Hey, Mal... It was... nice seeing you again."

*crying*
*sobbing*
*throwing up*

Disclaimer: I'm not a huge sci-fi nor comics reader, but I AM an intense consumer of any literary piece (or any forms of media, for that matter) that I come across and it is a very personal experience to me. So, I hope that you'd see this review as such.

In an overview, Maharlika is a Filipino sci-fi comic series about childhood friends, Mal and Yari, who are reunited by a mercenary mission to save their crumbling empire, the Maharlika Republic. As secrets unfold, their bond and their world hang in the balance.

Truly, this series was a pleasant surprise for me. With all the high praise and good reviews it has garnered from trusted bookish friends, I had already set my expectations high. Yet, I was shocked by how it exceeded them—I was mind-blown, to say the least.

The first thing that really impressed me was how the art style perfectly complements the storyline. It adds value and intensity to the storytelling—from the slow moments to the action-packed scenes—that made the plot more engaging and interesting from the very first page. Additionally, the world where the Maharlika Republic exists is one of my favorite aspects. Even though it was only the first volume of the series, it was intricate, well-thought-out, and still brimming with potential. Lastly, I. am. already. inlove. with. the. characters!!! Mal and Yari are already breaking my heart this early on, so imagine what’s to come in the next volumes, right? I thought that they were written with such complexity, and I'm so excited to see where their arc is headed.

Overall, I'll continue to repeat this until all of you listens to me—this is a sci-fi series that you don't wanna miss. It's definitely one of my favorites in the genre, so please DO check it out!

Check available copies of Vol 1 on @maharlika.komiks' page, or you can read all the released chapters/tracks at maharlika.substack.com — you're welcome!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own and have not been influenced by the author or publisher.

Maharlika is a comic book series set in the Republic of Maharlika, a reimagined Philippines where it’s an unstoppable global empire that isn’t as flawless and peaceful as they make it appear.

What do I love about this series?

1. Maharlika has a rich and vivid worldbuilding paired with art that can rival international titles! The setting offers a lot but not too much because there’s still so much more to unpack
2. The plot is thick with the triple Cs. Politics, state secrets, and corruption aren’t the backdrop; they drive the plot
3. In terms of characters, I also love how they’re all pretty much still a mystery even at Volume 2. As more tidbits of information were presented, the number of questions surrounding each character also increased. All of them are flawed, driven by different motives, and well, hot.

If you’re looking for a Filipino sci-fi comic series riddled with a good balance of action, political intrigue, mysterious (and hot) characters, amazing art, and heartstopping plot and twists to boot, then you should definitely pick this up as soon as possible before Volume 3 comes out!

The idea of the Philippines being the center of a global superpower, contrary to real life, is as compelling as it is just unsettling to think of. This uncannily interesting premise really hooks the reader into the story, making us want to see more as the mystery unravels about the Philippines' sudden rise to power after the Spanish colonization.

My only nitpick is the really quick pacing of the story. I'd like to see more character interactions outside of Mal and Yari to give the plot a little more breathing space.

Can't wait to see the rest of the komiks!

Maharlika Vol 1 is a fascinating, magical, puzzling, thought-provoking and gratifying graphic novel. I found myself lingering through the pages, finding my breath through the sequences and revelations, making sense of the clues, and appreciating the stunning visuals.

Divided into five chapters, or tracks (like a soundtrack), this volume satisfyingly laid down the futuristic world where the Philippines is a global empire. A world where the Philippine revolution had not only led to the downfall of the Spanish rule, but also to the widespread influence across continents which expanded and built into the Maharlikan empire. The socio-political and cultural themes made me contemplative.

The prologue featuring the POV of a young Korean hooked me right away. There is that picture of a first world Philippines, and its final sequence made me curious. Then it was followed by an action-packed and fast-paced scenes that introduced the main characters, childhood friends Mal and Yari. They both have proven themselves as admirable warriors but past events led to their divergent paths. A mission brings them back together and I am totally invested.

The events are heavy on sci-fi elements but easy to imagine and follow. I loved that there are familiar settings such as our very own Pasig River here at Metro Manila. And in an instant, I had been transported to the picturesque islands in the regions. A few more characters were introduced as the “tracks” went on, together with several respective back stories and skill sets, and I am so eager to determine who are the protagonists and villains. I was shookt with the events of the last track! Thankfully, three more tracks building on to volume 2 are available for me to read. Still, I want more!

The comic art is absolutely top notch. I don’t know a lot about describing visuals but I felt that the way the narratives were reinforced with drawings made the stories feel alive, the characters are moving, the dialogues and sounds are loud and clear. The scenes are cinematic to say the least. I can’t get enough of them. So impressive!

There are three things that reading Maharlika Vol 1 left me: 1) It made me nostalgic, with all the reference to a distant past- hence the cassette tape in the photo. I had fun googling the track titles to see where each relates to the story ❤️; 2) I am eager to see where this is going and to find answers to my questions. I am low-key pleading they drop the rest of the volumes soonest hihi: 3) I am so proud that Filipino artists create such first rate graphic novels that are for consumption by the whole world. I will definitely grab more locally authored comics to read.

Do check it Maharlika comics available for free access so you can understand my excitement and pride to share this with you:

Grateful for the gifted copy from Rexy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Maharlika took me on a ride I didn't see coming. From page one, it pulls you into a reimagined precolonial Philippines—alive with grit, action, and so much heart.

Volume 1 had me completely hooked. The world-building is so rich and vibrant, and the ending? Jaw. Dropped. I couldn't believe how it ended—I was flipping the last page in shock and awe, immediately needing more. And then came Volume 2, which somehow managed to top that. It was absolutely mind-blowing. Everything expanded—the stakes, the emotion, the action—and I loved every bit of it.

I also have to say… I'm obsessed with Akira. Such a strong, layered character with depth and presence. It's characters like him that make Maharlika not just exciting, but deeply personal and unforgettable.

This series isn't just a sci-fi—it's a powerful love letter to Filipino identity and heritage. If you're into epic storytelling, and badass characters wrapped in rich cultural roots, Maharlika is a must-read.

Counting down the days until Volume 3. 🔥

How do you even review an illustrated book? That’s the question I asked myself after finishing Maharlika Vol. 1 by Rexy Dorado?! But let me try, because wow, what a ride this was!

From the very first pages, my adrenaline was racing. This is the kind of action-packed storytelling I’ve been craving! The illustrations by John Ray bring everything to life with such intensity, you don’t just read the story, you feel it!

The fight scenes are gripping, the movement so dynamic, it almost feels like the panels could leap off the page!😱

What really caught my attention were the character designs and outfits. They’re bold, distinctive, and bursting with personality. I honestly don’t think I can do them justice by describing them here. You have to see them for yourself to appreciate the level of detail.😍

The story itself is just as impressive. Dorado’s imagination shines through, weaving a world that feels larger than life yet grounded in its own distinct story. And then of course! that ending! A cliffhanger so sharp it left me hanging on the edge, already itching to grab Vol. 2!

Despite (or maybe because of) that suspenseful ending, I’m giving this a solid 5 stars.

If you’re looking for an illustrated story that’s fast-paced, visually stunning, and impossible to put down, Maharlika Vol. 1 is definitely worth diving into.

Maharlika stands out with its unique blend of localized Filipino sceneries and buildings, seamlessly integrated with a touch of technological advancement to create a captivating future, cyberpunk-style setting. The preservation of important Philippine landscapes adds depth, making this one of the best comics I've read.

One of the most striking features is the use of Alibata for sound effects instead of the alphabet, and the detailed design of the Agila suit, which resembles a "bahag." These cultural incorporations enhance the series' appeal.

The story evokes a sense of déjà vu in a good way, drawing inspiration from "Steins;Gate" and "Evangelion." It also brings to mind Nicolas Cage's "Next," with characters who can see the future and change the present, creating a thrilling vibe as they outsmart each other.

The pacing is perfect, balancing page-turner action panels with witty dialogues between characters. This gripping narrative had me on the edge of my seat, making "Maharlika" a must-read for fans of thoughtful and dynamic storytelling.

Can't wait to read more!

graphic novels are a sure fire way to bring me out of a reading slump. i appreciate this one a whole lot better because its set in futuristic Philippines. - making the locations, anecdotes, and imagery a lot more approachable and inviting. bonus - i believe there's traces of baybayin throughout the illustrations?

Mal and Yari partner up as a detective x mercenary duo set out to solve interesting cases. volume one was action-packed, exciting, and the ending will leave you needing voume 2 ASAP

4.5 🌟

This is the first comic book I’ve added to this list. And since August is “Buwan ng Wika” (National Language Month), this month’s reads will purely be from Filipino authors.

I’ve read this book because this is the BOTM of our local book club and I’ve never been happier to pick this up! I am a big manga and anime fan although sci-fi is not my main genre. I can see (and the author also proudly declares) that he had a lot of inspiration from Neon Genesis Evangelion for this comic and I can see that.

But what made me fascinated with the story is the whole alternate universe in this story where the Philippines won against the colonizers and rose up to be the top country in the world. How nice that would have been, but also, it would be so different from what I have come to love about my country too. I can’t wait to know how that is going to be explored more.

This is an action packed series with little censorship (torn limb, bullet exiting the body, etc). So this is a little warning especially for the young kids.

This is one comic series that I can proudly say is “Filipino-made” and it deserves to be read by more readers.

This story is such a fresh take on an alternate reality of the Philippines being a major superpower, and I liked the sci-fi touch to it.

Sir Rexy's writing paired with the very eye-catching art style of Sir John Ray makes a great duo, it felt like I was also reading a manga because of the very nice paper stock.

I first read this comic and was aware that every detail is important to the story. I admit there were some parts that I got confused about because my mind was preoccupied with absorbing everything for the first time. However, I read it a second time and put sticky notes on important things to go back to for references.

I appreciated the story even though there were more questions than answers after reading. This first volume felt like the chess pieces were just being placed on the board, and that big moves are going to happen in the future. This world that Sir Rexy and Sir John Ray has created is so fascinating.

I wonder what Sir Rexy is planning and I am so curious on what happens next with that ending.

You can also read my review here.

What do you get when you mix gripping storytelling with jaw-dropping art? A graphic novel you won’t be able to put down and Maharlika Comics is exactly that. It’s bold, brilliant, and honestly? One of the most exciting series I’ve read in a while.

I was first introduced to Mal and Yari when several friends of mine talked animatedly about how good the story was. This got me intrigued, so when Kat (@katonthejellicoe) invited me to join the launch of the follow-up to the first book, I immediately said yes and the rest is history.

☀️ Maharlika Vol 1 truly captivated me with its worldbuilding, offering glimpses into the country’s past and how it became the most powerful nation. The pacing felt just right— not too slow or fast. I savored reading it but also couldn’t help turning the page quickly, eager to know what happens next. As for the ending? Don’t get me started. Luckily, I already have the sequel, so I started reading it right away.

☀️ Now listen — the first book in any series sets the tone, follow-ups are tough, especially when the first book already made waves, but Rexy Dorado handled it effortlessly. I will say this: If Volume 1 hooked me, Volume 2 had me committed. Maharlika Vol. 2 delivers intense action, deeper character moments, and even more incredible art. It’s the kind of sequel that deepens your love for the story and makes you root harder for everyone involved.

☀️ This series is everything I want in a graphic novel: rich worldbuilding, memorable characters, high-stakes action, and moments that hit you right in the gut. It’s unapologetically Filipino in the best way: proud, bold, and full of heart. Maharlika deserves a place on your shelf, in your collection, and in your heart.

There’s so much to say about Filipino comics, but stories like Maharlika will make you pause and go, “Damn right we belong on the international stage.” With talents like Rexy Dorado and John Ray? You’d be sleeping on them at your own loss.

(2024 review)
“I missed you, Mal.”
“I… don’t know if the person you missed is still '
me.'”

Synopsis:
We follow two childhood friends, Mal and Yari, who are part of the mercenary group the Agila Corps. They aim to unify the people of the Republic of Maharlika. It’s an action-packed sci-fi story with interesting technology.

What I thought:
I don’t read that much mangga, manhwa, comics, or graphic novels, so I don’t have a lot of experience with this storytelling format. But I think the art here was amazing! The concept of Maharlika as a version of the Philippines as a superpower was intriguing. Through this, I can imagine how much the creator loves the Philippines and wants it to reach its potential and to succeed.

Going back to the story, I really liked the action scenes, the mystery, and the technology. Since this is only Volume 1 of a comic series, we were definitely meant to be left wanting more. That ending had me feeling… I don’t know. A little dissatisfied? Well, it definitely left me feeling like I can’t wait to read more. So I read more! As of this writing, the people behind Maharlika have tracks 6 to 8 up on substack and it’s free to read, along with Volume 1 (or tracks 1 to 5)! I highly recommend reading on after reading Volume 1 since a lot of questions were answered.

How I found out about this: I won a copy of Volume 1 from my book club, Book Chickas PH.

It is rare in my opinion to see Filipino literature using science fiction as a way to tackle on these political struggles that we see within the Philippines so I really enjoyed Maharlika Vol. 1 for utilizing the genre to bring forth the issues being discussed within this comic book.

From the first volume alone, I love the story for how it attempts to look into the complexities of its conflicts through its futuristic setting alongside having well-written characters, especially with Mal and Yari whom I found very enjoyable in watching their scenes. I also love the story for being very well-paced for a first volume as it gradually builds up from introducing its readers to the characters, lore, and conflicts being dealt all the way to its emotional climax and resolution that left me wanting to read more of this story.

The art is also worth mentioning. I was blown away by the detailed art inspired by sci-fi anime and manga like Ghost in the Shell. I admire the details in it and I can see how much the artists truly want to do their best in bringing the story to life through each of these drawings made.

Overall, for being a greatly written story told through its artistic details in the komiks format from the first volume itself, I give Maharlika Vol. 1 a five-star rating. Fantastic read!

Aside from the detailed illustrations and interesting plot that this komiks have, what really caught my attention is the usage of Baybayin characters. Although it could be a bit confusing for people who can't read these characters, little notes written in the material itself can help readers understand its meaning.

What I also love about this komiks is that it really showcases "Filipinoness" as it uses not only Baybayin characters, but also places and vehicles like tricycles that can only be found in the Philippines.

As it shows how Filipinos would act like, and the Philippines would look like if it were to become the center of the most powerful nation in the world, Maharlika can be a great read for people who is fond of reading dystopian science-fiction while also deeply interested in everything that is connected to the culture of the Philippines. They will not only enjoy the eye-catching graphics, but will also have a chance to get a glimpse of the darker side if the Filipinos were to possess such boundless power.

Maharlika's volume one is so interesting and action-packed that it got me hooked on the first few pages! It was like cyberpunk but make it Filipino lol. I can't believe I finally read a story where the Philippines is the most powerful nation! It's so futuristic yet also nostalgic. Mal and Yari seem like your chill couple and I really like that kind of romance.

I loved how Rexy did not let the comic book to be entirely in English and that he included Filipino terms and expressions. The baybayin which I absolutely loved can also be seen everywhere! The artwork is so wonderful! The character design and the outfits made the story come alive. John Rey did a fantastic job with it.

As an average Filipino who also dreams of a better future for the Philippines, thank you for writing something like this. Though in my mind, I never dreamed of the Philippines being a powerful country. I just wanted it to be developed and thriving so Filipinos could live a better life.

Such a great book. This book shows an opportunity to abound and culture merge. This book challenges us with a intriguing questions also it give us a captivating visual.

Aside from that, i really love the character names. And when the "siomai" was mentioned ughh it makes me miss the famous siomai located @ ust. We call it dimsum treat & angkong.

Also reading this book especially the character of yari & mal, it reminds me of miles & gwen frienship ( Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse)

While the ending of this book, reminds me of what happened to Peter & Gwen Stacy ending scene of Amazing Spiderman

Overall, i highly recommend this book to everyone. Can't wait anymore for the Volume 2 because the ending left me hanging 😣

Ang husay!

It's like transcending the boundary between fiction and reality. You know that it is fiction but it it doesn't feel like it entirely. There's a feeling of familiarity, like home. I love how they include Baybayin, very Filipino, very authentic. I'm not very much fond of slow burn stories, so this one is everything for me. I like how the scenes flash in my mind like a movie. Napaka-distinct din ng pagkaka-illustrate. Gandang ganda rin ako sa kulay at detalye.

Maharlika gives a whole different kind of experience! Grabe, laban kung laban! I feel like there's so much more to come in the next volume.

This is not your typical comic-book adventure story. It's a whirlwind of events in the lives of two friends, Mal and Yari, and their mission to uncover a long-hidden mystery.
The entire plot is superb, from the characters and their costumes to the action scenes, as well as the embedding of Philippine history in each scenario.
I particularly appreciate how the author incorporated the Baybayin writing system into the novel itself. It also includes certain local landmarks in the Philippines, such as the Pasig River and the country's richness of islands. If you enjoy adventure manga and anime, this book will undoubtedly be one of your favorites.
