Maybe this will be the cure I’ve been praying for …
Sherry Hoppen was hiding a secret alcohol addiction. When she said yes to joining a thousand-mile bike ride for charity, it was a desperate attempt to kick-start a positive change in her life—the hard way—by riding her bike from Michigan to Texas. She asked herself, “Will this be what it takes to get me sober?” This nonathletic mom who worked in ministry and directed a children’s choir was a respected member of the community. But she also drank alone at home—and couldn’t stop.
With her no-holds-barred honesty and humor, Sherry Hoppen recounts her many attempts and failures at achieving sobriety, and the hiding and her shame over the addiction that held her prisoner for over ten years—until the day she surrendered and God took over.
Ten years later, Sherry is living a life of sobriety and is passionate about helping other women surrender the secret sin of addiction that cripples their faith and family life. Sober Cycle offers hope without judgment or trite mantras, assuring readers that they, too, can find redemption and healing and a life free from addiction—all without riding a bike for thousands of miles.
Loved this book because it was so real and raw. Also really neat to r as about someone like me, a Christian woman who struggled with alcohol so deeply as I have. Three years sober now and so happy to commune with Sherry in this story.
This book really hit the nail on the head when it came to the demons addicts face every single day. Sherry does a good job of being honest and vulnerable while telling her story. Kudos to her for taking a chance and sharing such sensitive experiences with us in this book. I rated this 5 stars because I can/ could relate to nearly every chapter. Without ruining it for others I think if you are even considering reading this book, addict or not you just need to go with your gut and do it. I don’t think you will be dissatisfied!
Vulnerability is difficult, and takes great courage, but so often when we do allow ourselves to be open and honest, we find that our story can help someone else realize they are not alone in theirs. Sherry Hoppen did just that in these pages and for that I am grateful. Her story has a lot of big hills, curves, and bumpy roads, and is truly a testimony of faith and hope! #SoberCycle
I can’t recommend this book enough! Sherry is funny and deeply transparent about her struggle to overcome alcoholism for years. Even though alcohol wasn’t an addiction for me many other life choices fit the mold. Her book made me laugh and cry and honestly was a balm for some of my deeper pain and shame leftover from my life before I surrendered to Christ.
The first time I read this book, I lost sleep over it. I couldn't put it down and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. It was an emotional, riveting read and I was rooting for her throughout the book.
If you or a loved one has an addiction to alcohol this is an absolute Must read!! Sherry's struggle to sobriety is an inspiration and a terrific read. She is a precious woman of God and a gifted storyteller.
Sober Cycle has given me a new respect for those trapped in addiction. Sherry holds nothing back in her struggle and I applaud her. This is not a boring read and very informative of the destruction of addiction.
Raw. No 12 step miracles. No cliche answers. No help at all unless you’re desperate for a helping hand. A behind the scenes look at the journey out of the bottle and into the light of life.
Excellent read. I am an avid cycler so I enjoyed that aspect of the book. I also appreciated learning about the struggle of addiction and the personal experiences she shared.
This book changed my life. While I don't struggle with alcoholism, it's so relatable to my own afflictions. I was able to see myself in her story and it broke me.
