The Heirs of Elysium #1

Born of Blood and Shadows

Rate this book
Magic is dangerous. Bound magic is deadly.

Left vulnerable to relentless witch hunters, Ameris will go any length to unbind her magic. Even bargain with Xander, the dangerously attractive fae heir. Caught in a whirlwind of ambition and lust, Ameris agrees to save him in exchange for learning fae magic.

Allies are scarce. Trust is a luxury.

With the witch hunters closing in, Ameris and Xander enact a blood bond, transporting them to the fae kingdom of Elysium. In a world torn by ancient vendettas and ruled by the shadow king, Oberon, Ameris discovers her unbound magic may be key to the throne.

Unbound & used for her power.

Xander will use any tool in his quest to rule – including the sexual tension between them, magnified by their blood bond. Oberon will do whatever it takes to keep the throne and make Ameris his. And he’s not afraid to play dirty to win.

The throne is the prize. Lust is the game.

Captured by Oberon, Ameris is seduced by the very darkness she’s warned about. Torn between the intoxicating allure of Oberon’s shadow magic and her intense bond with Xander, Ameris is left with no choice:

Make her claim.
Or be bound by blood & shadow.

I wanted this one to work for me so much. Unfortunately, I did not vibe with it. The characters felt very one dimensional and I didn't feel any chemistry between out main characters. The plot was full of conveniences and repetitive. I needed more world building and explanations. I did like the second half better when Oberon was introduced, but I won't be continuing the series.

3.75. Ameris wants to unbind her magic and she’ll do just about anything to make it happen! That includes entering into a bargain with the fae heir. She’s in a position to save his life and does so with the agreement that he’ll teach her how to use her magic. When they enact a blood bond, it transports them to Elysium, the fae kingdom where there are other players in the game who want her magic.

I love a good morally gray FMC and absolutely loved that Ameris had a mission in mind and didn’t let any man get in the way. She stayed true to herself and took care of business! This was a fun read and was super engaging from the first page, I was sucked into the story immediately!

Thank you so much to MTMC Tours and Jamye Smith for providing this free ARC. This is my honest review! This published on October 8th.

Thank you Net Galley & Jamye Smith for the ARC!

I have so many mixed feelings about this book.

What I liked:
* The morally gray FMC
* The heroine/villain push & pull dynamic, unsure of where she’d truly land
* The fae & witch magic systems & their separate worlds
* The possible found family
* The overall plot of the book
What I didn’t love:
* The MMC POV chapters felt inauthentic
* Telling vs showing in the writing
* Rushed/gapped storytelling in certain portions & lack of history on the fae & human worlds

The bones are there and I absolutely love having a morally gray FMC. The love interest is good as are the potential found family characters and villains, and I really truly love the plot of the book. But it all kind of fell flat for me. The MMC’s pov chapters felt a little inauthentic. And there was a lot of “telling” the reader what the character was feeling as opposed to showing. If it were written in third person, I think that would make more sense. But both POVs being told in first person I just expected more showing and not telling. The FMC’s POV chapters were definitely better in my opinion and I could really feel her rage and guilt and conflict in her actions. Once the book got going I really was enjoying it and got sucked in, but towards the end I was unsure again. The cliffhanger was great, but again the instances of telling us what was happening rather than showing us through actions of the characters was a little bothersome. I enjoyed it overall, however, and I would recommend it to those looking for a powerful morally gray FMC read!

SPOILERS BELOW

I felt conflicted about Rhiannon’s character as well. Zorria and Xander make it seem like they hated her (hence why they tried to kill Ameris when they mistook her for Rhiannon), but then Zorria tells Ameris that she may look like Rhiannon but she’ll never be like her. And it sounds like Xander also was attracted to Rhiannon in some way because of how Zorria says he was always distracted by her. This conflict of emotions may be cleared up in future books, though, and it could just be Zorria’s jealousy shining through. I enjoyed the push and pull of Oberon and Xander with Ameris’ light and dark, and how she came into her own power. I do wish there were a little more training for Ameris because it felt as though she was an expert in her power in the end when she’s not used it much before. Not sure if this was because of the passed knowledge from Rhiannon or what, but it would have been cool to see that developed more! I would have enjoyed more history on the fae and human worlds to understand more of the driving force behind characters actions, but this also may be just to set up for future books. Also, it felt like a really big plot hole when Ameris visited Xander in the dungeon, where I assume shadows are everywhere, but Oberon didn’t show up there when he had in every other scene that she went off on her own in the castle. Overall, I did like it and it felt unique to other fantasy/romantasy books I have read, and I will likely read the next installment.

Ty to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC :)

Girl, that ending.

THAT ENDING.

It has me a little confused in the best possible way.

Read if you like:
Fae bargains
Elemental magic
Unbreakable bonds
A woman in her villain era ✨
shadow daddy's
Love triangles

This was a wild ride and a breath of fresh air. The writing style was so beautiful, and it deserves all the gold stars
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 3/5

The chemistry between Xander and Ameris was sizzling, but the chemistry between Ameris and Oberon? Yessss. I'm here for it.

I can't wait for the second book (hopefully there is one in mind?!).

Thank you to Jamye Smith for sending me an e-ARC of her debut novel, I truly appreciate it!

Quotes:

"Is this what falling apart feels like? Never knowing, from moment to moment, which emotion will rip out of you? My head feels heavy, and my eyes burn. I want to fall asleep and never wake."

“Maybe, but you will eventually. It means you will become my darkness, the hellish thing that will haunt me always. For love or hate, it will be you.”

"I’ve noticed the way you look at me. The darkness within you wants out. I intend to release it and make it mine.”

Review:

GUYS!! I FINALLY FOUND MY FIRST 5 STAR ARC 😍

I absolutely loved this book! If you are in a reading slump and want action, magic, romance, fantasy, and a spinkle of spice then you NEED to grab this book.

Firstly, I need someone to read this so I can yap on about the ending - I mean, THAT ENDING?! How dare you play with my heart (will she/won't she?! Iykyk) and spring that surprise on us 😂 I love it!! but I'm definitely an impatient little bookworm for book 2!

The story follows Ameris, our FMC, who is willing to go to any length to unbind her magic and release her potential, she even makes a bargain with Xander, the banished fae Heir, to teach her. Everyone wants something and they are willing to use, manipulate and sacrifice people if it means their success!

I absolutely adored that ameris prioritised herself throughout the book as she was aware people were using her to achieve their goal, so she thought I will beat you at your own game, and owned it.

I can't say too much without spoiling the plot, but honestly this love triangle has me wanting both of them 😂 oberon is the dark, powerful, takes what he wants, and 'kind only to her' kinda shadow daddy, and then we have Xander who is more playful, close group of friends, vows to protect her and is more Cinnamon role but honestly I love them both but I'm clearly in my villian era as I was drawn more to oberon!

Overall, I loved the story, the plot, learning about magic and the lore of the fae world, seeing ameris grow and the dynamic between the two male characters. I loved how fast paced the story is, and the writing style as I flew through this! I can't wait to find out what happened next 🧡

Actual Rating: 3.5⭐

Born of Blood and Shadows is recommended for those who especially enjoy reading Anti-Hero main characters.

This book started with a strong opening, getting me hooked into the story pretty quickly at the beginning.
I was interested in seeing how Ameris (the FMC) changed throughout the story after going through many major events which leads her to made some questionable choices. I was a tad frustrated by her a few times, but I was curious in seeing what the future hold for her.

As for the romance, I don’t really agree shipping Ameris with Xander (the MMC)….
Sure, they are attracted to each other but sometimes Xander can be dismissive towards her and even underestimate Ameris, which really annoys me.
I’m hoping there’ll be more relationship development in the next book.

The last few chapters are quite intense, a betrayal I didn’t see coming and also a show of true power really surprised me.

Overall, it’s a good start for a fantasy series. I’m hoping there’s more exploration of the world building and also more background story regarding the Fae kingdom.
I can see it has potential to be a great series so I’m looking forward to read the sequel and find out what happens next especially after that HUGE CLIFF-HANGER at the end of it….

Thank you to Book of Matches Media and the author for giving me an e-ARC of the book and for having me on this book tour. I’m leaving this review voluntarily!

I really enjoyed my read of Born of Blood and Shadows by Jamye Smith. My attention was held throughout the book from the very beginning, and I never once felt bored while reading. It contains quite a bit of things that I love, romantasy, witches/fae/magic, morally grey character, and interesting characters to name a few. There's a love triangle, which surprisingly didn't drive me crazy like they usually do. I had mixed feelings about which guy I wanted our fmc, Ameris to end up with. There's the fae heir, Xander and there's the shadow king, Oberon who isn't exactly a good guy. He has total shadow daddy potential though, and I found him to be pretty interesting, so I just can't resist. 🤪 There were twists/revelations that took me by surprise. I do find myself wishing we had a bit of history/back story. This book was all about the ✨️vibes✨️ for me, and like I said in the beginning, I enjoyed it. The ending had me on the edge of my seat! What's going to happen next?! I can't wait to find out!

If you love morally gray characters and anti-heroes, this book is for you!

It was such a nice change for the anti-hero to be the FMC, as most of this book centers around Ameris’ descent into a dark place. She experiences so much loss, and in her opinion breaks free of one cage just to keep landing in another. All she wants is freedom and she becomes willing to do anything to get it. I loved watching her descent, as I support women’s rights and wrongs. 💅

The other POV is the fae she has bound herself to, Xander. He is solely focused on leading a rebellion to regain his throne, pushing Ameris away in the process. I liked getting to see both of their POVs as they grapple with whether their feelings for each other are real or just a result of their bond.

Without giving spoilers, I’ll just leave it by saying that I really enjoyed where the book went and can’t wait for the next book!

Thanks to the author for the review copy of the book. This review was left voluntarily and all opinions are my own.

I started off interested enough in this book but it hit a lull and I never recovered.

The pacing is fast, too fast. Nothing ever really fully develops before we are whisked into the next scene.

Ameris and Xander had zero chemistry. But, again, this could be a development issue. I am sad to say I felt nothing for any of the characters.

I feel like this has potential it was just not for me.

Read as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning of this book was very promising and captured my attention immediately, however as I continued reading I felt it dragged on at times and went too quickly at others. I had a difficult time connecting to the characters and their love story/ triangle.

I loved the witchy vibe in this book and the idea of her love triangle but overall it fell a bit flat for me. It has great potential and the world was very interesting.

FINALLY! An FMC that is not waiting for a man to come swooping in, not letting her goals be swayed by her love for a man and with so much rage! Oh, this was such a refreshing change of pace. PLEASE do not change her on the next book.

I would have loved to see more world building. Definitely wanted to see more of the shadow magic as well as how Xander rounded up his army hence why I took a star off the rating.

Hi Besties!💕🌻
I am so excited to share my review of Born of Blood and Shadows😍 By the lovely Jamye Smith
A Giant thank you to @bookofmatchesmedia for the gifted ARC! This is the first book in the The Heirs of Solarium series and I loved it! It does have some tricky themes so you should absolutely check out those trigger warnings before jumping in! Your mental health is always more important than a book.
Ameris is a witch who can’t access her magic, and all she has ever wanted was to do just that. So, when she stumbles across a fey in need of help she jumps at her chance to make her greatest wish come true. But we all know the old saying “Careful what you wish for”, because helping that one Fey changes everything for Ameris. But will it end up being for the better or the worst?
This book was a roller coaster! I loved being on Ameris’ journey with her. Her cunning ability to survive and determination to be free of anyone’s control was amazing! I loved this book and I can’t wait to see what happens next, and how she ends up dealing with Xander!

This book has a little of everything that romantasy lovers crave - magical bonds, found family, shadow magic, tension & spice, battles, and a strong main character. There are also many interesting side characters that drew me in. It was refreshing that Ameris was focused on saving herself and not everyone else around her. I still can’t decide if I am team Oberon or team Xander, and I can’t wait for the next book to see how the plot develops. I don’t want to say too much about the ending, but it definitely shocked me!

Ameris knows it won’t be long until the witch hunters come knocking.

She feels the magic thrumming beneath her skin, but it’s bound so deeply she’s defenseless.

On one fate filled afternoon, she stumbles upon the undeniably handsome Xander, a fae heir, desperate to get home & reclaim the throne that was stolen from him.

A blood bond transports them to Xanders home of Elysium. With her magic unbound, and with a grief filled heart, which path will she choose?

I absolutely devoured this book. I was swept up in the setting, and it was so interesting to see the perspective of an fmc who leaned into her villainous side.

I loved the push and pull with both love interests! I couldn’t tell who Ameris would choose.

I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

Born of Blood and Shadows, by author Jamye Smith was a great faced-paced read. Our FMC, Ameris, was such a relatable character, and I loved her self realization throughout the book. This book also included some new tropes for me, we don’t often get a morally grey FMC. I truly appreciated that there was proper equestrian terminology and knowledge implemented into this book as we don’t get to see that as often. Not to mention, the description between the scenery and magic was well detailed, it allowed me to truly immerse myself into this world.

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯; 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘺.”

⭐️ 4-4.5/5

This book follows Ameris, our fierce witchy FMC. We get a bit of her familial history, between the loss of her parents and existing ties to Marguerite and her locked away powers. While Ameris is scavenging a shipwreck, she finds herself meeting a Fae, also known as our MMC, Xander. Ameris deals with a great deal of loss in such a short period of time, and I found her self realization on her actions made me adore her resilient self easily. After a bargain is struck, we travel with our MC’s into the Fae World, Elysium. Ameris finds herself amidst a rebellion between the current King, Oberon, and Xander, looking to get his throne back. We meet a lot of our side characters during this time, but I have to say Zeke is definitely the one I’d want on my side, he truly lived up to the definition of a friend through thick and thin. We end up in a bit of a love triangle between our MMC’s, in which Ameris must play the game, but little do they know, Ameris is one step ahead. The question is now, will controlling her own fate be what she thought it would?

"𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I believe it was an amazing debut for the author. I do feel as though we need a bit more back history to both worlds, along with how everything came to be. I believe we are missing some key background to Rhiannon as well, between Zorria’s feelings towards Ameris, and Xander, who potentially had feelings towards Rhiannon? The cliffhanger had me absolutely GASPING! Overall, the banter, the magic system and everything was a quick face-paced fantasy read for me which I definitely enjoyed. I will be picking up the second book for sure!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author Jamye Smith for the ARC.

Definitely recommend reading if you enjoy the following:
✨ Anti-Hero/Morally Grey FMC
✨ Permanent Bonds
✨ Witches, Fae and Magical Creatures
✨ Elemental Magic
✨ Love Triangle

Ameris is one of only two Witches left. Her powers were bound by her parents on their death bed to try to protect her.

Xander is a Fae, taken by humans. Ameris saves him from dying on a wrecked ship. Now he owes her a life debt. Xander and Ameris make a bargain for Xander to teach hey magic and for Ameris to help him return to his world.

Oberon has overtaken the throne. With his ability to weild shadow magic he has seen as a strong foe, but maybe he's not the villian after all.

I did like that Ameris is given more than one love intetest. Oberon appears to be more accepting and nurturing especially of Ameris magic. I do question I'd Xander would even want Ameris without the blood bond.

*ARC received from Netgalley - all opinions are my own*

TL;DR: The book explores human and fae magic systems, features a degree of found family, and presents a morally grey female main character (FMC) amid a light vs. dark romance. While not an entirely unenjoyable read, the story's characters often fall flat which brings down my rating.
Review:

"Born of Blood and Shadows" marks my first encounter with a truly morally grey FMC, and it was interesting to see Ameris grow and change throughout the story. Watching her struggle with her choices between staying with “light” magic or succumbing to dark and destructive magic was intriguing. However, despite understanding her loss and the rationale behind her feelings and actions, Ameris's constant hostility becomes exhausting. It is particularly frustrating when she repeatedly refuses to take accountability for two significant choices that altered her life, instead blaming everyone else and completely disregarding their experiences.

My feelings towards Xander, our male main character (MMC), are mixed, leaning towards the negative. He is selfish, rude, and dismissive of Ameris until , at which point he suddenly acts like an infatuated teenager despite his age. Even if Ameris pushed him to the brink of death, he would still be content just to be near her. I find this dynamic between characters unappealing, especially since Xander continually disregards Ameris. He speaks over her, hides things from her, underestimates her power and abilities, and generally shelters her, then wonders why she is hostile toward him. There's a scene later in the book where he leaves her behind despite her begging to be involved and we get an inner monologue from him, essentially saying, "I'll bring her back a present from the city, and that will make everything better".

The overall story is pretty interesting, and I would love to learn more about the world's history and the events during the war. It would be nice to get a bit more clarification on Rhiannon as she is portrayed both positively and negatively, even by her supposed “friends” so it’s a bit difficult to know whether she was liked or even a good leader.

Our interactions with Oberan, our "villain", were pretty brief and feels like a bit of a lost opprtunity as he was unlikeable from the start. I think it would have been a great time to pit her against Xander as Oberan was willing to give and nuture her magic.
Also a bit of a side note,

Despite some frustrating moments with our main characters and some side characters (I’m looking at you Zorria), Born of Blood and Shadows offer a truly morally grey female character struggling with past and recent trauma all while trying to navigate her new life and powers. It’s very light and slow-burn on the serious romance side, so do with that what you will.
I do think it would be worth the read for many people but maybe read around other reviews or grab a copy from the library as it wouldn’t be my personal choice to read.

I received this ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book had so much potential and I liked Ameris more at the beginning of the book than I did at the end. That's not to say that I didn't appreciate her journey and her character development. It was dark and, at times, confusing.
The world building was fine, if a little lackluster when they reached the fey kingdom. I suppose there couldn't be much when the story jumped from the human world to an ice area to a tree then, finally, the palace.
Ameris' logic was sound. She was pissed that her magic had been bound and wanted it freed, hence the deal made with Xander. From there things become complicated. Despite being taught magic, as she had asked for, she took the view that it was only to the end of using her (fair enough assumption) but instead of facing this head on, she let it sit and fester inside her. There were a lot of times that I had to close my eyes and pray for patience but rolled with it because, it's the characters journey, I had to believe that there was method to the madness. And there was. As irritating as it was to read, it was also very different to the journey I've read of other FMC and I appreciated it. Ameris loses so much at the beginning of the book and it takes its toll on her. Therenare only so many knocks a girl will take before she starts knocking back.
Xander began as a hardened, betrayed Fae who was desperate to get his throne back from the evil usurper. He treated Ameris terribly and then was shocked when she went off on her own, standing on her own and going in her own direction. His character wasn't the strong MMC I am used to, his focus almost instantly shifted from his throne and the rebellion to Ameris and the bond. His change could excuse his treatment of Ameris and that was his downfall.
Secondary characters lack depth, zorria is the only one with half a personality and that's only because she hates Ameris, although I believe jealousy to be the cause of it.
Nothing was really delved into in any great detail. Secondary characters seemed to only be used at plot tools without any development so I didn't become invested in them.
The story moved at a good pace, the villain should've had a bigger role in the book and his backstory could've been explored more. We R only given the bare facts about how and why he became the way he was.
The romance... Well... Ameris seems to be attracted to anyone that looks twice at her. I know the fae are beautiful. We all know the fae are beautiful. I loved the love/hate, enemies to lovers dynamic between Ameris and Xander, it was more interesting from xanders POV. But then Oberon got involved and, you know if Ameris hadn't felt anything for him at all, I would've been ok with it. But she was attracted to him on some level and while I know it's symbolic of her attraction to the dark side, it really got my goat! A few steamy scenes, angst and sexual tension that culminated eventually and yet....
There was some good foreshadowing and honestly the end did make up for the lack of other character development. It was triumphant and intriguing. The view of the morally grey FMC is honestly the best thing about this book.
I'm interested to see what Ameris does next.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I was very excited to read this book, and it delivered on some things that I was looking for but lacked in many other ways for me.

Let's start with what I liked:
- Having a morally grey FMC with an interesting twist at the end of the book.
- The various players and the "found family" aspect of fantasy novels that bring me a lot of joy with the rebellion members
- The plot was an interesting premise that kept me interested in what was going to happen next
- The fantasy setting was great, with various creatures, species, and dangers

What I struggled with:

Overall, this book was a decent read in that it kept my attention for part of it, but I struggled to read through parts of it, too. I always want to commend anyone who spends so much time and effort in writing a novel, especially a fantasy novel. I definitely think that Jamye has really great potential for future fantasy endeavors because of how interesting the various plot points were, but this book just fell flat for me.

Jamye Smith’s Born of Blood & Shadows is a new addition to the fantasy genre that offers a blend of familiar fae lore and human drama. As a reader who enjoys discovering new voices, I found Smith's novel to be an overall enjoyable and easy read, though it does have its shortcomings.

The novel follows Ameris, Xander, and Oberon through a narrative that aims to balance romance, intrigue, and the complexities of fae-human interactions. The premise holds promise with its blend of magical elements and human conflicts, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired.

One of the notable strengths of the book is its accessibility. Smith's writing style is straightforward, making it a relatively easy read for those looking for a quick escape into a fantastical world. However, the story's potential is somewhat hampered by a few critical flaws.

Firstly, the character development is noticeably lacking, particularly among the side characters. They often blend into one another, feeling like variations of the same personality rather than distinct individuals. This lack of differentiation can make the world feel less immersive and the stakes less compelling.

Furthermore, the novel has moments where important elements are introduced but not fully explored. For instance, scenes involving a mysterious necklace and an encounter with a winter beast are introduced with a sense of significance, only to be relegated to mere side notes. This can leave readers feeling that crucial aspects of the story are being neglected or underdeveloped.

The romantic plot, which is central to the story, falls flat. The relationship between Ameris and Xander lacks depth and believability. The insta-lust dynamic feels rushed, and Ameris's conflicting feelings towards Xander and Oberon contribute to a sense of whiplash rather than genuine emotional conflict. The romance's lack of build-up or meaningful tension detracts from its impact.

Additionally, the pacing of the novel is uneven. The rapid progression from Ameris and Xander’s initial meeting to the dramatic events that follow feels abrupt. This quick transition to the fae world, coupled with a slow, introspective slog through the latter part of the novel, disrupts the narrative flow. The shift from the urgency of the human world to the more languid exploration of fae culture can be jarring.

In terms of lore, Born of Blood & Shadows doesn’t break new ground. The fae world is a familiar blend of typical fae elements, which, while engaging, doesn’t offer many surprises.

In summary, Born of Blood & Shadows is a book with intriguing elements and a promising premise but ultimately falls short due to uneven pacing, underdeveloped characters, and a lackluster romance. While it provides an enjoyable read, it may not fully satisfy readers looking for a deeply immersive fantasy experience. Given its potential, it will be interesting to see how the series develops. For now, this debut earns a solid three stars.

2/5 🌶

Born of Blood and Shadows is a well written, fantasy book that kept me on the edge of my seat. It follows our female main character, Ameris, who is a witch whose magic has been bound, living in hiding in the mortal world. Her life is changed when she stumbles across an injured fae, Zander, and agrees to help him return to his Fae land, which he was banished from. On this journey, Ameris struggles to overcome the trauma she's encountered in her life and is determined to get control of her magic and finally feel in control of her life.

Things that I loved :

✨️ Elemental Magic: I absolutely love a book that has elemental magic (water, air, earth, fire, shadows). I loved the difference the author made between human witch magic and fae elemental magic and thought it was a really unique twist to have. Ameris journey with her magic was interesting to read about and kept me wanting to keep reading.

✨️Morally Grey FMC: It was really refreshing having a Morally grey female main character for a change. I really enjoyed how, throughout the book, it was made very clear that Ameris' only priority was herself and getting control over her magic, by any means possible. Her resolve to take what she believes to be hers, no matter the cost, is something we rarely see with female main characters

✨️Dual POV. I always love being able to have insight into the characters from differing points of view. I do wish we could have had at least a view chapters from Oberons point of view so we could understand his character more.

Things that could have been better:

✨️ I wish that the relationships between Ameris and Zander as well as Ameris and Oberon were explored more. I found it hard to root for either relationship because they felt a bit surface level. While I appreciate that Ameris was focused on herself and wasn't willing to give anything up for either of the love interests, the romance felt lacking and underdeveloped.

✨️ I think a bit more of a backstory would have been helpful. Rhianon is mentioned a lot but we never get a full understanding of what it looked like when she ruled. Considering the connection Ameris has with her, it would have been nice to know a bit more about Rhianon to get a better understanding of her as a ruler and person.

Overall I enjoyed this book and the ending is definitely intriguing. I look forward to seeing where the story goes in the next book.

Thank you NetGalley, Jamye Smith and Publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

wow! what an ending!

I think for people who enjoy books like “Once Upon a Broken Heart” and SJMs ACOTAR series will really enjoy this book! It is NOT a stand alone and does have a cliff hanger, so I can tell right away it will be a series. That being said, this book is full of twists and turns!

Ameris, the FMC goes through a lot of growth in this first installment, and it’s fun to see how she grows and changes. The book is written dual first person POV from Ameris(FMC) and Xander (potential love interest MMC). I love dual and multi POVs because it gives you new insights into the world, what’s happening and lets you get to know more than one character.

Ameris is very secretive (in my opinion) which made reading her interesting because as a reader I’d know some of what she was thinking/planning but not everything- which kept me guessing and sometimes on the edge of my seat! 👀🤣

Xander is more straight forward which made him more relaxing to read. So I really enjoyed the dual POV for variety.

What I loved most about this book is the interesting world(s) and different types of magic! I LOVE magic- what fantasy book is good without magic?!

Types of magic found in this book are:
🌟 Witchy magic: spells & potions
🌟 Elemental magic: intuitive and uses nature
🌟 Shadow magic: dark & deadly
🌟 Blood magic; forbidden

How amazing- right?! I LOVED the variety of magic which has me so excited for book two so I can see what happens next!

As I mentioned at the beginning, this book is full of twists and turns. Love, betrayal, passion, revenge, death, magic, adventure, magical creatures, enemies (ish) to lovers, and more happen!

Truly a wonderful first book, and even though I typically HATE cliffhangers, the book does feel “complete” (versus chopped off for the sake of a second book) and left me wanting more.

I’ll definitely be reading book 2! Can’t wait to see what happens next in Ameris’s and Xander’s journey!

Highly recommend if you enjoy some tension between characters, intrigue, power plays, adventure, and lots of magic!!! Some on-screen spice but nothing overly graphic (in my opinion). If this was a movie, I’d rate it R- but not X. lol.

Treat yourself and get your copy today! Also, almost forgot: the cover is STUNNING! 🤭🌟🤩😅💗 I bought the ebook but now I need to get the paperback too; it’s so pretty 💗🤩🤭😭😂

Morally grey tale where witchcraft, elemental fae magic, and strategic romances collide.

Ameris, desperate to escape relentless witch hunters, strikes a dangerous bargain with Xander, a captivating fae heir, to learn magic in exchange for saving him. Together, they form a bond that transports them to Elysium, the fae kingdom under the shadowy rule of King Oberon. As Ameris navigates a world of ancient rivalries and dark allure, she finds herself torn between Oberon's seductive shadow magic and her intense connection with Xander. With the throne at stake and threats looming from all sides, Ameris must decide whether to claim her power or remain ensnared by blood and shadows.

Born of Blood and Shadows is a captivating read, offering a fresh take on the world of magic with a rich tapestry of history and character dynamics. At its heart, this novel presents a unique spin on the history of witchcraft, descending from elemental fae magic that explains their deep connection to the earth. This distinctive approach breathes new life into the genre, emphasizing the ease of which Ameris comes into her powers.

The novel excels in its portrayal of character dynamics. Each character is intricately developed, with personalities that shift and adapt depending on their surroundings and the relationships they navigate. This fluidity adds layers of complexity to the narrative, especially when it comes to romantic interests. Relationships are portrayed with an air of mutual benefit rather than mere affection, making every interaction feel charged with strategic intent. Readers are left questioning the motives and allegiances of each character, mirroring Ameris’s own uncertainty and growing mistrust.

Ameris embraces the morally grey trope. Straddling the line between light and dark, she embodies the complexities of a character shaped by trauma and a quest for control. Her journey is one of profound internal conflict, where her powers, morals, and worldview are in constant flux. This inner turmoil is both heartbreaking and relatable, providing a nuanced exploration of how past suffering can shape present choices.

Overall, I enjoyed the blend of witchcraft and fae and the power of light vs. dark. I cannot wait to see how the fae world is expanded upon in future novels.

Thank you so much to @thejamyesmith & @bookofmatchesmedia for my Advanced Reader Copy of 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐬! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.

Born of Blood and Shadows was an amazing read that had so many Romantasy elements I’ve come to know and love! It was twisty and had so many plot elements I didn’t see coming and I absolutely loved the FMC, Ameris. She was born a witch in a land where witches are burned at the stake. To protect her, her family binds her powers. As Ameris grows, she becomes very frustrated because she can’t access her powers. While I didn’t always agree with her decision making skills, I think her character is beautifully flawed and trying to navigate a harsh world where sometimes emotions can factor into making decisions. This, at least for me, made her feel so relatable and I just loved how strong willed she is. This one ALSO has a love triangle, which can be hit or miss for me, but Jamye did a really fantastic job of navigating the dynamics between Ameris and the two MMCs, Oberon and Xander.

Xander is our Fae Prince and Oberon is our shadow daddy king! The chemistry she has with both of them is amazing and there were SO many times I was jumping between who I wanted her with. The tension was really intense at times between all of them but it made the romance in this so delicious!

I thought Jamye did a really excellent job with the world building in this book and I thought it was such an excellent debut for a new series! It was a perfect set up and I’m SO excited to see what awaits Ameris in the next book - especially after the cliffhanger ending! I definitely recommend this one for any lovers and readers of Romantasy!

Thank you to Victory Editing for this Arc via Netgalley.

This is the second Arc I've ever read and... sigh I think I'm disappointed in the experience through the platform buutt to be fair it's only the second book. Now... going into the story and plot.

Ameris? Dislike her, can't stand her. What is her purpose? This was 300 pages of her pissing me off with her thoughts and decisions. She goes on about blaming Xander for all the suffering in her life, admits it isn't so but goes " but I want to be angry so let me do whatever nonsense I want to do, not listen to anything others say" Gah she is irritating.

I couldn't even feel for her when Xander and the others excluded her, although fair enough because the second she does do exactly what they warned her not to do she gets caught... The author tried to do a trapped-for-safety bit and I wouldn't say I like Ameris enough to have begged her to be shoved back because once she steps into her power which mind you Xander and his people were teaching her how to manage, she basically turns against them for her own gain. It all her her her, won't be controlled, yadi yada and honestly I felt like all her decisions were the dumbest I've ever read, no plan just a girl thinking she can go through life on her own and crush anyone on her way out of fear and no clear deduction of what exactly is the situation,

Anyway... There was a plot and the story is somewhat easy enough to follow, I feel like sometimes the author loses direction in her writing, I would get lost and think wait when was this ever mentioned? But I can let it slide. There is little to no world-building because Ameris consumes the pages even though is a dual POV.

Xander is chill. Reading what he thinks and reacts just makes it abundantly clear that Ameris is the problem. She goes around professing her hatred for him, he's like okay but girl I'm not the other one but whatever. When he responds to the way she treats him, it's a problem.

Honestly, if there were no Ameris involved this would have but a solid 3 star maybe 3.5 because I actually like the villain Oberon over Ameris.

If there is a second book, good luck to anyone who decided to read it. But Ameris will not be on my screen again. Cute name though.

Born of Blood and Shadows: A Journey into Dark Fantasy
From Blood and Shadows by Jamye Smith is dark fantasy at its finest, so well-crafted to whisk the reader deep into a vortex of magic, danger, and forbidden desires. The novel follows Ameris, who discovers powers inside herself that she never knew she had, and Xander, a prince of the fae in search of redemption. Their fates are intertwined in a dance of passion, betrayal, and political intrigue.

A Relatable Heroine

Ameris was such a multi-dimensional, relatable character. It was very empowering to witness her on this journey to get to know herself, especially with the introduction of magic into her world. She's that gray kind of protagonist who makes choices no matter how bad, as long as it accomplished what she wanted. Strong, resilient-she was an amazing character to fight for.

A Fae Prince with a Tormenting Past

Brooding and mysterious, this prince of the fae named Xander had a fully tragic past; his nature was conflicted, his soul in perpetual torture. This will bring depth to the story, the passion palpable, the tension between him and Ameris evident while forbidding love amidst a world full of political intrigue.

A Realm of Magic and Danger

Smith does an outstanding job of world-building, so intricate and immersive. The magical system is cool with powers that are unique and powerful, dug into throughout the story. From the danger to the intrigue in the fae world, readers will not be putting this book down from cover to cover.

A Thrilling Plot

The storyline is fast-paced, full of twists and turns. The political intrigue adds another dimension to this storyline-the power play amongst the different factions in the story. Ameris and Xander's romance was something to look forward to, and their chemistry and passion fueled the narrative.

Conclusion

Born of Blood and Shadows is one enthralling dark fantasy destined to send its readers into a desperate wanting. The book flows with complex characters, world-building, and intrigue in every plot-a book no fan of the genre should ever miss. Jamye Smith's perilously dazzling world makes the characters she brought alive surely continue to live in the minds of readers long after the final page.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️💫/ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Fantasy with Romance
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

I received a ARC Copy from Net Galley for my honest review. This book focuses on a witch named Ameris who is hiding her abilities from her village due to her parents death. She has a desire to break the bond her mother put on her powers to keep her safe and her prayers are answered when she comes across a wrecked ship. There she finds Xander, a Fae banished from his world to hers. With mutual interests, they strike a bargain to get him back to his world while he teaches her about her powers.

As they get back, Ameris realizes she is far more trouble than she thought. She gets in the middle of a rebellion against Oberion who currently sits on the throne. With her bond with Xander, she feels torn and used as she gets between the two Faes. What will happen instead of picking one of them, if she chooses herself?

This was a quick-paced read. For her debut, I think there is a lot of potential. But, I feel as though there was not enough world building and a chance for each of her characters to blossom. It felt jagged In approach and too perfect if that makes sense. I feel as though I was suppose to like the “love triangle”, but there wasn’t anything to grasp me fully into either Fae. I also found Ameris to be annoying at times, which rightfully so after everything she has been through. My suggestion would have been let book one play out with one and then the other. I did enjoy some of the banter and the plot twists though. Additionally, it was a nice switch to more of a Morally Gray FMC.

I think this is a good read if you want something quick and surface level. I read it after a monster Fantasy book and it helped me enjoy the fantasy without having to think so hard. I think as the author grows in her writing, she will get better!

I gave it a 2.5/3 because it is middle of the road for me. It was a nice read but nothing too overpowering or complex.

Ameris, a fiercely determined protagonist with a powerful, unbound magic that has made her the target of relentless witch hunters. Her desperation to unbind her powers leads her to strike a dangerous bargain with Xander, the dangerously alluring fae heir. The chemistry between Ameris and Xander ignites the narrative with a simmering tension that adds layers of complexity to their tumultuous partnership. Readers will find themselves rooting for their bond while simultaneously questioning the depths of their respective ambitions. The novel's pacing is meticulously crafted, propelling the narrative through thrilling twists and turns as Ameris and Xander navigate the treacherous landscape of the fae kingdom of Elysium. With the imposing shadow king Oberon as their adversary, the stakes of their journey become increasingly dire. Ameris’s discovery of her unbound magic as a potential key to the throne adds an intriguing element of political intrigue, making the reader wonder about her next move in a game fraught with peril.
The darker tones of the story are masterfully balanced with moments of levity and vulnerability, particularly as Ameris grapples with her duality—her desire for freedom and the seductive draw of the very darkness she is warned against. Oberon is a compelling antagonist, embodying the seductive nature of power and the lengths one will go to secure it. His presence in Ameris's life adds layers of tension that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Magic takes on a life of its own, serving both as a source of strength and vulnerability for Ameris. The author does an impressive job of exploring the consequences that come with such power. The intricate magic system is both fascinating and dangerous, creating a vivid world where every spell comes with its risks, and alliances shift like shadows. This fantasy novel is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and those who enjoy a strong, complex female lead navigating a world filled with danger and intrigue.

“I should be scared, but there is beauty in the chaos.”
“Enemies do make the best lovers.”

Fast-paced fantasy romance with interesting magic system.

The FMC, Ameris, was fierce character with interesting and tragic backstory. I liked how she grew throughout the story, but I wasn’t a huge fan of her tendency to blame everyone else for certain things that happened to her.

The MMC, Xander stayed a bit of a mystery to me and I would have liked to learn more about him as a character and his past.

I have mixed feelings about the dynamic between the FMC and MMC. There were aspects that I liked, for example some good banter between them, but also some things I didn’t personally enjoy, like how badly Xander treated Ameris at times or how dismissive he was towards her. Also the bond between them would’ve needed more explanation, and I would have liked to see more relationship development.

The villain, Oberon was honestly a bit meh for me, and I didn’t enjoy the potential love triangle.

I would have liked to learn more about the side characters, their history etc. There were multiple characters that seemed interesting.

The plot itself was engaging and there was a lot happening. Unfortunately some parts, especially towards the end, felt a bit rushed.
And at times I personally would have needed a bit more explanation of what was going on. The magic system seemed interesting, and again, I would have liked to learn a bit more about it.

I would have also liked to learn more about the worlds, the Fae, and their history. Rhiannon seemed like a really important character but there wasn’t much information about her, and opinions of her seemed mixed.

Overall I think this story has potential. If you’re just looking for something fast and easy to read, you might really enjoy this one.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

Thank you NetGalley and Jamye Smith for an eARC of Born of Blood and Shadows. The following is my honest review.

Ameris lives in a world where magic is hunted. With her own magic bound, she makes a bargain with Xander, the fae heir to the throne who has been shackled to the human world to teach her magic. When witch hunters destroy her home and her last bit of safety, she enters a blood bond with Xander to reach Elysium, the kingdom of the fae. In her quest to master her magic, Ameris enters deadly bargains and finds herself against the shadow king Oberon who has stolen the throne and she must tread carefully as her own lust and ambitions threaten her future.

Born of Blood and Shadow is a dark fantasy that explores a woman's ambition and quest for power after it's been locked away her entire life. We need more morally gray women in fiction and Ameris is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I loved the complexity of her and the way I was kept on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what she would do next. The beginning was a little slow but once we got to the shadow daddy, I was fully immersed in the story.

With all the light and dark fae stories I read, I thought I knew where the story would take me but Smith managed to keep the story fresh and intriguing. It bends the tropes I'm used to and the ending has me biting my nails for what's to come next and even I'm not sure what I want the resolution to be.

While I did love Ameris, there were times that her motivations weren't clear and I struggled and follow along. Once clarified though, I really enjoyed her character. Those moments did bring me out of my disbelief but I was still drawn back into the story. It was a good read with a easy to understand world and magic system, with complex characters, and a kingdom at stake. For fans of ruthless FMCs tired of men controlling their lives, this book is for you.
