The Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2nd July 2024 TITLE: The Old Wolf AUTHOR: J S Morton
Star Rating: 4
‘A thrill-a-page thriller packed full of over the top characters and a hitman they shouldn’t have messed with. Hugely enjoyable!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW If you happen to be on the lookout for a fast-paced, slightly gory thriller, you can't go too far wrong with The Old Wolf. The author, J S Morton, seems to know his stuff (and what his readership wants) offering them a smartly plotted ‘revenge’ story with a strong ‘The Equalizer’ feel to it. So, what's it about? Well, in a nutshell, it's the story of a retired hitman who's a little upset when his post office is robbed and Margery (the teller) is killed. What follows is a suspense-filled revenge thriller as the Wolf (now the much older Wolf) returns from retirement to, well, kill a lot of bad guys. There's a lot to enjoy in this twisting tale of murder - there's a lot of that, a lot of murdering. Firstly, it is all very tongue in cheek, and the author has, for the most part, excellent comic timing. So, despite it being a bit of a bloodbath, it's funny too. Secondly, the pacing is excellent; to be honest, there's never a dull moment, which as we all know, is vital to the success of a good thriller. And thirdly, I enjoyed the plot; admittedly, it’s not overly complex, but there’s plenty of meat to it and I think most thriller fans will enjoy the ride. So, what needs work. To be honest, not a lot. Possibly, another round of editing would have helped sort out the small number of punctuation errors. And when I say, ‘small number’, I’m sort of being kind, as there are rather a lot. For example, on the first page – ‘What’s so funny,’ he asks. Also, and this is probably just me, but I hate (literally hate) the c-word, of which there are plenty. Personally, if I’d been the editor, I would have (strongly) suggested they be removed as it turns off a significant number of readers. All in all, I'm very happy to recommend this book to readers who enjoy well-plotted thrillers, a little humour, plenty of gore, and a lot of bad language. So, for example, if you happen to be a woke, green party supporting vegetarian, I doubt this book is for you. But, if you like a bit of ‘spice’ in your reading, go for it. It’s a good laugh and trust me when I say, you’ll never be bored.
