Bazoomerangs

Rate this book
Three generations of women—a former flower child still living like it's 1969, a Buick-driving, religious Trumper, and an envelope-pushing, transgender 20-year-old—all under one roof. What could go right? Very deep yet also LOL funny, Bazoomerangs explores the goings-on inside the minds and in the lives of these three powerhouse women. Following their thoughts, histories, interactions, and possible futures, we laugh at their dismay over not only their differences, but even more over their surprising similarities...that boomerang—even bazoomerang—through the generations. For Alice, the mom of the trans daughter, this is not a politically correct discourse on the trans realm, as her reaction overflows with fear, regret, confusion, angst, and misunderstanding. Her politics and viewpoints are quite a change for someone who was conceived at Woodstock and grew up in a chicken coop. Will she come around before it's too late? Meanwhile, the daughter travels her journey of being trans as well as of accepting where her mother is. Follow all three on their personal paths, which take us places far from the expected, including lost dreams and new hopes, plus a prevailing familial love that overrides all differences.

Ann Crawford is a bestselling and award-winning author, eternal optimist, and lifelong lover of love. She writes books that explore joy, connection, healing, and the wild, wonderful adventure of being human — with heart, humor, and hope.

Her work invites readers to remember who they are beneath the noise, to listen for what’s true, and to create lives, love, and meaning rooted in that deeper knowing. Along the way, there’s usually laughter — sometimes out loud in the grocery store.

A world traveler who has circumnavigated the planet twice, Ann has trekked in Nepal, spent time in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Giza, belly-danced in Turkey, hitchhiked New Zealand’s South Island, meditated in India, played with children in Soweto, scuba-dived a sunken shipwreck, and chin-chucked a kangaroo in Australia. She’s also firewalked, flown a plane, and made an award-winning documentary film about Vietnam veterans. Her work has also been recognized for humanitarian impact.

Her latest book, The Life of Your Love: Calling in the Love of Your Life, invites readers to remember that love is who they are — and that living from this place naturally reshapes what (and who) they call in. She is also the author of Bazoomerangs, Spellweaver, Mary’s Message, Angels on Overtime, Life in the Hollywood Lane, and Fresh off the Starship — stories that celebrate love, connection, and the courage to live fully.

Ann lives in Colorado with her family and a deep appreciation for sunsets, laughter, and the quiet magic of being alive — plus a brazen fondness for coffee and chocolate that occasionally finds its way onto the page.

[I'm sometimes asked by other book reviewers to write (or significantly contribute to) a review that they can then submit to other websites under their own names. This is one of those. - Avril]

Bazoomerangs is one of those rare novels that manages to be deeply personal and fiercely political without ever losing its sense of humor or heart. Told in alternating perspectives across three generations of women—Starr, the free-spirited boomer grandmother; Alice, her buttoned-up, devoutly Catholic daughter; and Jaye, Alice’s fiercely unapologetic transgender child—the book captures a collision of ideologies, identities, and expectations with startling clarity and emotional resonance.

What struck me most is how well the author nails each character’s voice. Jaye’s chapters are bold, whip-smart, and overflowing with personality, while Alice’s inner turmoil is written with raw vulnerability, even when she’s being stubborn or misguided. Starr brings levity and a cosmic lens that softens the harder edges of the family’s conflicts. These aren’t caricatures—they’re fully realized, flawed human beings trying (and often failing) to love one another in a world that doesn’t make that easy.

There are moments of biting humor, scenes that sting with truth, and passages that genuinely moved me. The book doesn’t offer tidy resolutions, but it does offer something better: honesty. It’s not about fixing people—it’s about finding a way to keep showing up, even when the gulf feels too wide.

Bazoomerangs won’t be for everyone. It pushes buttons, challenges assumptions, and leans all the way into the messiness of identity, family, and faith. But for readers open to that kind of ride, it’s a powerful, unforgettable one.

A compelling family drama

Having previously enjoyed Crawford's work, I found this novel just as well-written and engaging. The story revolves around three contrasting characters living under one roof: a free-spirited hippie grandmother, a strict Catholic mother, and a transgender daughter. The dynamics of their relationships unfold in a blend of laughter and heartache, capturing the essence of family life.

Crawford skillfully juxtaposes the characters’ differing worldviews, creating poignant and often humorous interactions that reflect a deeper meaning. She illustrates the profound theme of acceptance, highlighting the importance of loving those who are different from us. With humor and sensitivity, the author explores the complexities of family bonds and the challenges of understanding one another.

For readers who appreciate stories rich in themes of love and acceptance, "Bazoomerangs" is a must-read!

entertaining and witty

Bazoomerangs surprised me with its honesty and humor. The story about 3 generations of women creates the perfect storm of connection. A Woodstock era grandmother, a conservative mom, and a transgender daughter. Alice’s journey with her transgender daughter is understandably messy and frustrating. A moving story about how love persists across generations and ideology. Great read. I recommend it.

So Good

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book but I absolutely loved it. The three generations of women learning to understand each other. Few books make you cry and this is one. I can't to see what else this author has in store.

Generational Perceptions

Ann Crawford skillfully intertwines the stories of three narrators: Jaye, a 20-year-old transgender woman, her disappointed mom Alice, and loving grandma Starr. Their humorous, unexpected, and sometimes interesting perspectives create an entertaining yet educational tale. A very original take on 21st century family life. Highly recommend!

This is a tale of three generations of women that life has brought together again, no matter how hard they worked to get away from each other. Starr, a hippie grandmother who still loves her beads and incense, her daughter Alice, a conservative Christian struggling to understand why her only child has betrayed her, and Alice's daughter Jaye, a transgender woman trying to find her place in this world. By turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, this book is for everyone who enjoys a good read with memorable characters and an unexpected ending.

Once again Ann did not disappoint. I truly enjoyed reading this book. It really opened my mind as far as how I and others may think of and interpret things that occur in everyday life. The book title was perfect as I was reading, my emotions were all over the place and the characters felt so real. I have recommend the book to multiple friends who are excited to get their own and start reading. I look forward to buying and reading Ann's next book.
