The follow-up to I Killed A Werewolf For My Summer Vacation (previously reviewed here - definitely check it out as it was awesome). Quick recap: In the first book, 10 year old Allen finds himself the target of the werewolf that killed his best friend. Lots of death happens, and eventually, Allen manages not to die. Now Allen is back. This time round, it's the early 90s, and he's a 15 year old with new friends, trying to get through high school unscathed and forget the events of 5 years ago. Obviously, he has the worst luck in the world because now there's a vampire in town, killing classmates and shit.
Just like the first book, this one was brilliant. It was a fast-paced read that I flew through. Brilliantly written, it threw out a lot of what we think we know about vampires (proper vampires, not those twinkly twats). If you love the 80s, 90s and horror monsters I would highly recommend the first two books. I'm about to start the third book now, so we'll see what poor Allen has to go through next.
The coming-of-age horror series continues as Allen attempts to go through High School years after the events involving the werewolf. It's too bad for him that his hunting days are just getting started.
Unlike the first book, this one is much faster paced and gets into the action quicker. Despite that, it manages to keep its 80s-90s horror charm intact. Allen becomes an even bigger badass in book 2 and has quickly become my favorite character in the series. I can only imagine what he will be as he grows up in books 3 and 4.
As for this book, it has plenty of gore, just as a classic horror should have. While this book has the classic vampire trope, there are plenty of fresh ideas in this one. Not to mention, these vampires are not your sparkling/love-making ones. These are looking for blood and are not ashamed to admit that.
Such a fun read. Not to mention that the ending suggests that Allen hasn't even faced his biggest adversary. Let's see what book 3 has in store!
This guy knows how to write a fun, gory book. The cover of the book is super corny and made me not want to read the series, but thankfully the werewolf was the first monster Allen had to fight so it wasn't too bad getting into this book which was the second one. I will be reading the 3rd book for sure. Can't wait to see how this ends or if Whittaker is going to write another one when Allen is in college. Only time will tell.
These books are fantastic. Definitely not for kids despite the fun names. They just have such a great feel to them. Perfect horror read, especially for 80's kids or fans of that time. Needs another round of proofreading for sure, but I absolutely love them.
Enjoyed this as much as I did the first one. Fast and to the point chapter's with some gruesome scenes. Plays like a movie in your head. Looking forward to the next one!
Vampires aren't usually my favorite subject. I mean, I have nothing against them – in fiction, that is – but they aren't my usual creature feature.
Seeing I absolutely loved 'I Killed a Werewolf for My Summer Vacation', I knew I just had to grab this one as well and boy, I was not disappointed.
Where the previous book is set in the late eighties, fast forwarding five years, this book takes place in the early nineties. As with its predecessor, the vibes of the era are delightfully present.
Alan DeShawn has picked up his life as well as he could, after the terrible experience five years ago. School is gearing up for Christmas break, Alan is blessed with a new set of close friends and things are looking good (apart from the occasional bully). Then, things start happening, awful, bloody things and Alan is confronted with yet another supernatural foe.
As said, this book manages to capture the vibes of the nineties well. We see some new characters, but readers of the first book will be pleased to know we see some familiar faces as well. The author knows how to tell a story and set a vibe, which at times reminded me of a mix of Fright Night and The Lost Boys – not that the book is a rip off of those movies, not in the least. The author uses the classical vampire, but is not afraid to use (sometimes) less well known aspects of the lore (no worries, no sparkling vampires here). There's suspense, a bit of humor, the chemistry between the characters is very natural and at times, the book is simply brutal.
Despite not being my favorite topic, this book is an absolute blast and I'm looking forward to future endeavors from this author.
First, I'll touch on the relationship dynamics of the characters. You have the family dynamic with Allen and his parents. Suffering a supernatural tragedy once has formed not only unbreakable bonds but conflict when confronting a new threat. Then there's the more important bonds of friendship. These bonds were strong enough to choose yo go into the lion's den no matter the consequences. Lastly, there's a budding romance, while a very back burner dynamic, it adds another layer to the characters.
The story itself is not just well written but paced well as well. It's not always a breakneck pace. It slows down when needed to explore the relationships between the characters before dropping them into horrifying confrontations.
The villain is unashamedly evil but shows an almost sympathetic side. While you may feel sorry for him, you can't help but pray for his defeat.
The final act is wrought with tension and violence that lead to an edge of your seat final confrontation. There are shocking losses and cheer worthy victories.
Personally, I can't wait to see what the world of the supernatural throws at Allen next.
The mc is a idiot plain and simple , he turtles instead of learning everything he could about the supernatural. !! Instead of bringing holy water or silver or basically anything to defeat a foe he sharpens sticks.!! Where was the knife he had? I lived in the 90s and believe me I had knives guns bow and arrows and was prepared to defend myself, the writer made this kid into a woe is me and I'm so sad!! What a waste of a good story by a bad writer!!
It was a good and surprisingly fast read like the first book. But I did feel as though the ending was rushed and they revelation of the importance of Allen’s character was lightly touched but never fully disclosed. But I did enjoy the introduction of the new characters and how they were brought into the fold by the previous characters.
Another great story from this author with great characters and a very well described home town feel to it. The story just flows and keeps you completely engaged from the first page until the last. Such a good mystery yet monster hunt. Again, I recommend this story to anyone that just loves a good thrilling young narrated and fresh take on the horror or vampire genre.
Very excited for the next Allen DeShawn book. A couple of small things that kept me from giving it a five such as how one victim turned into a ghoul within what seemed like a few minutes when it took others a few days. But other than that I really enjoyed the second book!
Really good character development and story line. This has bee a great series so far. Can't wait for next book and what new creature they will have to face off against.
This is book 2 of Sam’s - I killed cursed creatures series. Book 2 picks up 5 years later (which I liked, because Allen is older) and this time a Vampire is in town posing as a new teacher. Both books were fun, and worth reading. Looking forward to book 3!
I really enjoyed this book , now Allen is a teenager fighting a different monster. If you love creature features I highly recomend this book and the first one,I killed a werewolf. Cant wait for the next story.
Absolutely loved the sequel of "I killed a werewolf ... " and it didnt let down in any way. Absolutely fast paced, intriguing and exciting from start to finish. And as heartbreaking as the first one! 😭
It's an excellent sequel. I am enjoying this series and can't wait to read part 3. Some really good storytelling from Sam Whittaker. I love how the path was made clear, leading to (what I am assuming) the final battle. Great Trilogy.
I wanted yo enjoy this book and was excited to see it continued with Allen however I found it repetitive and boring and much lkke the 1st book in this series.
