BarnYard Heroes: A Half-Baked Origin is a blend of a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy novel and a Marvels Avenger movie, with a dash of the Muppets.
Is it silly? Of course. Is it a bit absurd? Absolutely. Is it socially relevant? Not a bit.
Thanks to a space alien’s experiments and the sudden corporate cancelation of his project, a band of misfit barnyard animals have malfunctioning superpowers, a thirst for adventure, and delusions of grandeur.
This origin story features the chicken, the last to join the space alien’s experimentation. She has yet to demonstrate a superpower, prompting the others to call her Half-Baked. But in order to save her fellow BarnYard Heroes and prevent the space alien theft of Earth’s cows, she will need to overcome her inferiority complex and activate her superpower. Who knows, she may even learn how to fly.
Samuel A. McAdams anointed himself the 21st Century Absurdist. The fact his writings do not match the traditional absurdist definition matters not to him, for he insists the term “traditional absurdist” is an oxymoron. He stakes his claim to the title because absurd, along with fun, are the most common words used to describe his work. He bolsters his right to the 21st Century Absurdist crown based on denials of writing his novels under the influence of controlled substances, stating his absurdity is 100% natural because he must maintain a boring lifestyle in order to continue donating his highly sought-after O-Negative blood.
Samuel was born, raised, and still lives in the Western Suburbs of Chicago, with his wife, Emmi. His children, Alexis and Ben, who many years ago helped brainstorm the BarnYard Heroes into existence, are grown and adulting on their own.
Dr. Hash Brown, a brilliant scientist passionate about genetic engineering, has ingeniously converted a former gymnasium into a state-of-the-art extraterrestrial research facility that is home to an array of genetically modified animals. Among these extraordinary creatures is a remarkable pig with astonishing strength, capable of effortlessly lifting weights of up to 15,000 pounds. Additionally, there’s a cat endowed with the ability to generate powerful tornadoes, a rabbit boasting vampire-like fangs and an affinity for video games, and a talented chicken with the remarkable skill of creating stunning works of art through painting. The chicken, however, has not received its superpower yet and thus is given the name “Half-Baked.” These incredible animals are captivatingly portrayed in the enthralling novel “Barnyard Heroes: A Half-Baked Origin” by Samuel A. McAdams.
Dr Hash Brown receives a call from the Senior Vice President of Intergalactic Strategies and Synergies, who announces he is coming for a visit and inspection. Will the chicken receive its superpower before he arrives, and if so, what will it be? This mystery, explored through ‘The Mambomatic 5000’ adds an extra layer of anticipation and intrigue to the story, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
All is well until the Vice President pays a visit. During his visit, he decides he needs a cow and tries to steal one to make a fortune by selling steak and milk. The other animals must come to the rescue, but will they be able to save their friend in time? This is when the real adventure begins for the animals.
The characters in this book are not simply unique, but genuinely unforgettable. Children will be drawn in by their extraordinary talents and charming idiosyncrasies. They will especially adore the invented words such as ‘brackahedron,’ a creature resembling a cross between a cow and a hippo. Picture a fish gracefully suspended mid-air, a rabbit and duck deeply engrossed in a video game, and a pig earnestly jogging on a treadmill. These are just a few delightful characters awaiting you within the pages of “Barnyard Heroes.”
I found the creative use of terms like “Atomic Quack” and “Cha-Cha-QZ power generator” quite clever and humorous. These terms added a layer of comedy to the story, making it even more engaging. The intelligent use of language and the amusing antics of the animals throughout the book are genuinely brilliant and will keep readers entertained from start to finish.
This enchanting science fiction book, geared towards children aged nine and above, is a captivating tale filled with thrilling adventures that unfold in the depths of outer space and the familiar embrace of Earth. The heartwarming story focuses on animals who band together to aid their friend and confront a formidable adversary. The book’s emphasis on teamwork and friendship is genuinely endearing, and the vividly portrayed characters are sure to resonate with young readers. I wholeheartedly recommend “BarnYard Heroes: A Half-Baked Origin” by Samuel A. McAdams for inclusion in classroom and home libraries. It has the perfect blend of excitement and heart, making it ideal for sparking young minds’ imaginations.
This was a fantastically fun, witty, and hilarious read. I was captivated throughout by the adventures and antics of the barnyard team. There was a lot of heart here as well, and I loved getting to know the Heroes individually, and seeing how they came together in this unexpected family unit. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more from Samuel McAdams!
