SDDU Book 2

4 1/2 Stars! ~ Spike is a member of the SDDU and his latest assignment is to go undercover into Beharrain to recruit an American aid worker to become a CIA operative. Abigail's mission in Beharrain is to help small villages relearn community; to teach the youth useful skills that they can barter for food and shelter; to teach the children to read and her acquaintance with a suspected terrorist makes her the perfect spy. When Spike shows up as a journalist assigned to film her work, he spends the night in her hut. The villagers insist that they marry, or Abigail may be stoned to death. Their trip to the city to marry brings them into danger, first from bandits and then from the targeted terrorist.

This is an intense story with violent scenes that may not appeal to everyone. Those scenes are intregal to the story and are dealt with very well. There are some witty moments that make a nice relief. Abigail really knocks Spike's socks off. Not only is she attractive, but she's brave and smart too. Even though I knew there would be a HEA, there were some moments I feared for the brave duo. This is definitely one for the read again and again pile!

Secret Soldier was a pleasant surprise. The plot moved so fast that the protagonists spent almost no time lusting after each other because they were too busy getting kidnapped, escaping from captivity, running for their lives, and trying to stop a terrorist plot. The sex scenes were short and came late enough in the story to be somewhat plausible. Unfortunately, the hero, "Spike," was a total cliché who could have been swapped out for a dozen other male characters in romances I've read. On the other hand, the heroine Abigail was an interesting, well-drawn character, and rather a bad-ass for an academic. It's too bad she had to end up with Spike, but that's how this kind of story works. I give this four stars for being well-above average for its genre.

One of the most predictable books I have ever read. I read and read and read, hoping it would evolve, but, no. It doesn't. Too goodie goodie in the end for me.

Lots of action in this book. The story involves a lot of spy stuff. The male is trying to save some people and the female needs to be recruited on the fly. It's a little on the gory side for me. The setting is northern Africa.
