But Captain Winterton has a secret of his own. What THIS female reader wanted from this tale was less indiscriminate steam and more depth of character. However, some ladies who prize spice over genuine connection will likely devour it and develop their own "wish lists" as Lady Ashby did after the death of her beloved husband.

Loss and love!

What a topsy turvy world. Isabella, Lady Ashby Mauleverer, newly widowed, her husband Ash having died in her arms after Waterloo, had suffered a world of pain.
Seeking to take control of her life again Isabella has decided to take a lover. She has a list to work through and taking control of her life might help her come to terms with the death of her dearly beloved husband, a cavalry officer and the Duke of Northriding’s younger brother.
At a grand ball at Mauleverer House she meets Captain Leo Winterton, who’d actually met Isabella at a ball in Brussels just before Waterloo.
So we have two people coming together, shading truths. When they have to engage with the real world, what will their relationship be? Part of Orchard’s series, Runaway Heiress, this is a slightly different take on love, regret, and finding oneself.
An enjoyable read!

What this lady wanted was not this book. The previous book in this series, A Duke of One's Own, was quite tolerable and that's why I had pre-ordered this one. I appreciate a relatively decent command of English, and both this book and the previous one have that, but a dull and tedious plot cannot be overcome just by being written in good grammar. So it's goodbye to Emma Orchard for me, unless she writes another one down the road that is praised by my GR friends. And, BTW, this author mentions being inspired by Georgette Heyer's Regencies. I don't see any Heyeresque-ness, either in plot or writing.

Read if you like: historical romance, widow fmc, bucket list, friends to lovers, pining, unrequited love, lies, she’s more dominant

I wasn’t a fan of this book 😭😭 I personally didn’t enjoy the writing style or dialogue (which felt really stiff) so I find it difficult to write a review

I thought there was unnecessary detail in the book, I didn’t really care for where she sat, what she wore, and how the sleeves did whatnot.
I wasn’t convinced on Isabella and Leo’s romance, there was no chemistry and their dialogue felt super awkward. She was soooo focused on her list during each steamy scene it took all the fun out of it. I wanted her to get carried away with him and forget about the list and be in the moment. It all made me feel bad for Leo since he was so into her.

I think if you’re a fan of the tropes maybe give this a go, everyone likes different writing styles and this one just wasn’t for me.

Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this ARC, I am voluntarily leaving my honest review

This is a fun read, but I'd say... maybe not for everyone's taste.

It reads a bit like the classics, it has a lot of lengthy text about feelings and descriptions about the scenery. Therefore, it might be a bit hard to get into it if you're not used to this type of writing.

However, the dialogue was nice and flowy, sometimes even funny. I enjoyed the main character's conversations and didn't mind that it was a fast burn type of romance. No, it was not the swoony sort of romance. It was lust-filled, and maybe not very realistic but it was still fun to read it!

I usually like my characters a bit more developed, with more back-story so that I can really root for them, and it didn't happen with this book. But I quite liked the plot: whenever I stopped reading, I'd be wondering what was going to happen with the couple.

Thank you to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this book, and to the author/editor for accpeting my request to read it!

Steamy and amusing, this Recency romance was compared to Bridgerton, which is a close comparison but not completely. Sex is highlighted in this novel and it is most definitely not the slow burn kind🌶🌶. So if you love hot romances and period fiction, this is the book for you.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I enjoy a good historical romance and this was a good story, but it was a lot steamier than I was ready for. Lady Ashby is grieving the death of her husband, just two years earlier at Waterloo. She is still young and beautiful, but has no desire to remarry or fall in love. What she is looking for is someone to have trysts with. Isabella has written a list, of things she would like to experience, just once more, before she surrenders herself to the life of a widow. She meets handsome and honourable Captain Leo Winterton, a friend of her brother-in-law, and she propositions him. If anyone were to see the list, it would be a scandal, so they must be very discreet. Captain Winterton agrees, because he is secretly in love with Isabella and he can't resist her proposal. Can he convince her that they would be good together, or will they be found out?

I liked the story and the characters. Isabella is definitely a woman before her time, and Leo was actually a gentleman, even though it seems he took advantage of the situation. He had danced with Isabella before and had been attracted to her, but she was married. Now he had his chance, but has to convince her. There were those who wanted to see them together and did what they could to help them, but Isabella continued to resist. There were a lot of steamy scenes in this story, so if you enjoy that, you will love this book. I would have liked to get to know the main characters a bit more, but I did like them both. This is part of the Runaway Heiress series, but it can be read as a standalone. If you enjoy a Regency romance, one with a strong female lead, and enjoy a steamy story, then What the Lady Wants is one for you.

Such a disappointing read.

The first third or so was great! I really liked the gentle D/s dynamic, with the hero completely giving himself over to the heroine in the bedroom, doing whatever she says and anything it takes to please her.

The middle third was so so. Sexy scenes slowed and cooled. A lot of plot machinations. A weird number of scenes from the perspective of side characters (always a pet peeve). Impending fallout from lies/miscommunications.

And then the last third, I more or less hated. The absolute failure to effectively communicate anything they were feeling. They were both straight up mean to each other. The heroine’s revelation that she’d been in love with him for ages, after just the day before blowing up their future by swearing to him that she could never love him. The whole surprise pregnancy (telegraphed from a mile away), forced marriage, plan to separate that will make them both miserable, thing was just a lot and annoying.

Plus, after a genuinely sexy beginning (I was planning to shout from the rafters how I found a properly hot cartoon cover historical!), it completely dried up. Zero sex acts on page after 60%, I think (when he first confessed feelings and they split). Even their wedding night, at the very end after they’ve reconciled and both exchanged I love yous, is fade to black??? Bewildering decisions were made, and not decisions I liked.

My Opinion

If you have followed my reviews for a while then you will know that I am trying to read more historical fiction and when they are as enjoyable as What The Lady Wants it is difficult to know why I have stayed away. Emma Orchard takes us on a journey of self-discovery as Isabella has to learn to live without her husband. I enjoyed the way that this had been cleverly written with Isabella and Leo trying to steal some time to spend together. A beautifully written novel.

This story takes place in Regency era England with a naval captain and young widow. Isabella is a strong character who has endured a lot of hardship in her life and now she wants to move on and take control of herself and her future. The story takes us along her journey of healing and sensual self discovery with her chosen companion, Leo. Leo is a man who listens, he is eager to please, and he’s been pining and yearning for Isabella since he met her. The proposition Isabella makes to Leo was not what I expected but it was fresh and different.I enjoyed this book, I liked the overall plot and I enjoyed all the stolen and secret moments with our two main characters as well. This book is a fun and steamy historical romance with the perfect amount of tension. I think the author captures the era well and it captures the modern audience.

This one didn't feel very historical - my point being, the sexual liberation in the plot worked, but it felt more like a modern trope transposed into the time period. It's not done badly, but it still doesn't really click, at the same time. Still, my biggest turn-off was the very heavy 'let me tell you a story' prose espoused by the writer in this one. It felt very detached and distanced, which didn't endear me to the characters, much less the heroine we're supposed to be rooting for.
It's not a bad book - it just didn't gel for me.

I didn't like this at all. The writing style wasn't for me and the whole book was more of a "tell, don't show" which I'm not a fan of.

Isabella and Leo didn't have any chemistry whatsoever and it didn't even feel like Leo was in love with her. We were told that he was but as usual, it wasn't shown well. Also, we were reminded how they were kind of cousins all the time which took away the joy for me and made me dislike them as a couple (granted, they're not literally related: Leo is the first cousin of Isabella's sister in law - (though is she her sister in law is she is married to her husband's brother? Who knows). But anyway we were reminded how they were kind of a family and that's why Leo was trustworthy.

It took away all of the excitement for me. Also, for her he was just a stranger, and the description of the book lets us believe that Leo was Isabella's friend. That's why I wanted to read this book, I thought it would be friends to lovers where Leo loved Isabella for years and lined for her but didn't do anything about it because she was married. Not but now that she's not, he finally has his chance.

That's not what the book is about.

The writing is awkward and stiff, the characters are less than appealing and the plot is kind of boring tbh. I was hoping that Isabella would enjoy her encounters with Leo more, but all she did was to think about her list all the time which made the moment she realized she loved him and then accepted it, out of nowhere. There wasn't any foundation of it tbh.

I didn't enjoy the book at all. Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an ARC for an honest opinion.

Title: What the Lady Wants

Author: Emma Orchard
Genre: Historical, Regency, Romance

Rating: ★★★★☆

Autumn, 1816...
Lady Isabella Ashby is mourning the death of her beloved husband, two years past. Despite being young and beautiful, she plans to leave London, return to her parents' Yorkshire house, and retire from society before the year ends. But before she resigns herself to widowhood, she wants one last taste of life...

What the Lady Wants is a delightful Regency romance filled with forbidden love, daring escapades, and the heartwarming journey of a woman rediscovering her joy and passion for life.

What I Loved:

A Heartfelt Journey: Emma Orchard's What the Lady Wants is a delightful journey into the world of Regency romance, filled with longing, scandal, and undeniable chemistry. Lady Isabella Ashby, grieving the loss of her husband, is a character whose pain and resilience resonated deeply with me. Her determination to experience life one last time before retreating into widowhood is both heart-wrenching and inspiring.

The Scandalous List: One of the most intriguing aspects of the story is Isabella's secret list. The idea of a widow with a list of daring experiences she wants to fulfil before leaving society is both thrilling and touching. It adds a layer of excitement and tension, as the potential for scandal looms over every item she checks off. This list is not just a plot device but a window into Isabella's soul, revealing her desire to reclaim her life and joy, even if only briefly.

Captain Leo Winterton: Captain Leo Winterton is the perfect match for Isabella. His honourable nature and secret love for her create a compelling dynamic. When Isabella proposes her scandalous plan to him, his internal struggle between desire and duty is beautifully portrayed. Leo's genuine love and the way he supports Isabella, even in her most audacious moments, made me root for their romance wholeheartedly.

The Dance of Impropriety: The tension between propriety and passion is masterfully handled. Orchard captures the essence of Regency society's strict norms while allowing her characters to push against these boundaries. The result is a series of exhilarating and tender moments that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The way Isabella and Leo navigate their growing feelings amidst the threat of societal ruin adds depth to their relationship.

A Story of Love and Redemption: Ultimately, What the Lady Wants is a story about love's power to heal and redeem. Isabella's journey from grief to joy, aided by Leo's unwavering support, is a testament to the resilience of the human heart. The slow-burning romance, filled with witty banter and heartfelt confessions, makes their eventual union all the more satisfying.

What the Lady Wants is a beautifully written, emotionally charged romance that explores the courage it takes to seek happiness in the face of loss and societal expectations. Emma Orchard's tale of Isabella and Leo is one that will stay with you long after the final page.

I thoroughly enjoyed Emma Orchard's previous Regency romance and was delighted to pick up another, this time telling the story of Lady Isabella Ashby and the dashing Captain Leo Winterton. Isabella is in mourning after the death of her husband, who was killed during the Napoleonic Wars, and she vows to spend the rest of her days alone. However, before she completely withdraws from society, she wants to experience a little more of life and makes a list of all the scandalous things she wants to try. This is where Leo, who has been secretly in love with her for some time, comes in.

The book reads very well. As always, the author takes great care to preserve the essence of Regency England. Although the book is aimed at a modern reader, great attention is paid to the language in which it is written. As a result, it reads smoothly.

As for the story itself, the author interestingly combines themes of grief and trauma with emancipation and the place of women in Regency society. It is important to note that there is spice in the book, but it makes sense in the context of the plot and the motives of the characters. The main character decides to take control of her life in a patriarchal society where women are effectively the property of men. Taking control of her body and making decisions about her sexuality thus seems like a form of emancipation. I liked how Isabella's motives were outlined in this regard. When you have such a strong main character, pairing her with a shy and somewhat reclusive protagonist is a perfect plot device. Leo is a very sweet character who also suffers, though in a very different way than Isabella. I really liked how the relationship between the characters changed throughout the book.

My only comment would be about the ending, which I felt was a bit rushed and thus not entirely rewarding. From my perspective, it's a shame that we didn't get 2-3 more chapters towards the end, which would have allowed the characters to slow down a bit and reflect on their situation. The circumstances in which Isabella realized her feelings for Leo were a bit rushed; I wish there had been more pining and a slower development.

However, regardless of my personal reservations, I think this is a very well-written Regency romance. I like Emma Orchard's writing and will certainly be following her future works. I recommend this book to all fans of the genre (you don't need to know the other books in the series to enjoy this one).

I absolutely love that Isabella kissed Leo in the first chapter and his first thought was, "Is she proposing to marry me?? God, I hope so." He was whipped from the first. He fell first AND at first sight, but the problem of course is that the first time he meets her (a year or so before the aforementioned kiss), she was happily married. They'd shared a rather wild and informal dance in Brussels, just days before Waterloo, but then she was whisked away by her handsome and loving husband. Now, a year or so later, she's a widow, still heartbroken and emotionally devoted to her dead husband. What's a man to do?? The angst was delicious.

I really enjoyed their dynamic in the first half of the book. The spicy scenes were well-written. And I love that he was in love with her the whole time but couldn't tell her. And despite taking longer to fall in love with him, she was very conscious of his feelings and desires as well.

Oh, but I didn't love the second half of the book. I didn't enjoy how Lady Irlam ruthlessly schemed to force a deeper relationship between them. That one lie she told was especially thoughtless, considering how Isabella was widowed. I didn't enjoy that Isabella became conscious of her responsibility to Leo once she realized he'd gladly obey her every wish, but never ended up having that important conversation with him in order to discuss boundaries for them both. And I think a chunk of the book is missing because they crossed several items off the list but I've no idea what they are. Not that it's extremely important in the end, that list. She was so obsessed with it for so long, when I really hoped to see her disregard it, slowly, as she began to care for Leo. Or maybe add items to the list that weren't sexual in nature. I'm not convinced of her sudden love for him. It came out of nowhere. I think if we'd had a few scenes in which these two had interactions outside her list, her newfound feelings would be more believable.

The ending felt rushed to me and the dialogue became stilted.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with the first half but found myself disappointed with the second half. I was convinced of the sexual chemistry but not the romantic chemistry.

A touching story that I liked, even if it took me longer to warm to the heroine. I found her too self-centered for long stretches, even though her matter-of-factly way of working through her list was quite amusing. I already knew Isabella and many of the secondary characters from the author's previous book. I liked Leo right from the start. He is a submissive cinnamon roll hero who would do anything for his beloved, even if it might leave him heartbroken in the end.
The plot is well written and has "he falls first" and house party tropes. Love, grief, lies, self-denial and unexpected twists make the story a real rollercoaster of emotions, which is also peppered with humor, entertaining interactions, a very likable cast of supporting characters and a few passionate love scenes.
The book can be read as standalone but I recommend reading the previous books by the author first as there are some references to the earlier books and their protagonists and other well-known characters appear in this story.

After the death of her husband at the Battle of Waterloo, Lady Isabella Mauleverer suffered from feelings of guilt, depression and a loss of reality. Now that she is feeling better again, she decides to take control of her life and travels to visit relatives in London. She compiles a list of sexual experiences that she would like to consciously relive before she retires to the country as a widow for good. Her choice of partner falls on the attractive Captain Leo Winterton, to whom she is related by marriage, and propositions him but with the note that she wants neither love nor remarriage.
Leo has been secretly in love with Isabella since their first meeting in Brussels at her husband's side. When Isabella proposes to him that he become her lover, he accepts, even though he knows that he has to keep his love secret and that sooner or later he will suffer for it...

If you like emotional romance novels about unexpected second chances in love with more experienced heroines in charge and lovesick heroes, you will certainly enjoy this book.

Isabella, the widowed Lady Ashby Mauleverer is out of mourning for her beloved Ashby and preparing to retire from society, but before she does, she wants one last adventure and has made a list of things she wants to accomplish – a list that could ruin her. To complete her list, she will need help and has decided that Captain Leo Winterton is the perfect man for the job! Isabella has no desire to remarry nor fall in love, but she isn’t quite ready to wither away, and despite her grief, she longs for a connection and hopes that Leo can be that man.

Captain Leo Winterton has been in love with Isabella for years, but she was happily married, so he suffered his unrequited love in silence. But when Isabella approached him with her request for his help with her “list”, he is torn between the opportunity to finally be with the woman he has loved from afar and his sense of propriety. He also knows that he could be setting himself up for further heartbreak as Isabella has made it clear that love and marriage will play no part in her future. Will he risk his heart for the chance to change her mind?

This was an interesting story, not quite what I was expecting, as it was more emotional that I thought it would be. Isabella’s journey to let go of the grief of losing her beloved Ashby and finding herself was the focus of this book. Which is fine, but it does seem to make the romance seem like a secondary plot point, rather than the primary story. This book is full of emotion, self-discovery, unrequited love, a bit of steam, wonderful secondary characters, a bit of angst, a second chance at love, and finally a HEA. Overall, I liked this story, but not quite as much as the previous books and I while I would recommend this title, I don’t think I would read it again. This is the third book in the series, but it could be read as a standalone title with no problems.

3, maybe 3.5 stars

“You are my mistress, in any possible sense.”

Emma Orchard did it again! I absolutely adored Isabella and Leo’s story. Once again, we follow an empowered woman, who knows exactly what she wants, and her tribulations in a society that doesn’t fit her expectations. Just like in A Duke of One’s Own, there is a perfect balance in the writing, making its sounds like a regency book, especially in the dialogues that sometimes reminds of Austen, while remaining easy to read, with a great flow. This modernity while keeping some loyalty to the usual historical romance can also be found in the plot with all the modern challenges faced by the characters, the steam (OMG the steam!) or the diversity involved in the cast.
What the Lady Wants is the 3rd book in a series, but it can be read as a stand alone (though you’ll probably want to read them all, and discover all this melting family). We follow Isabella, a young widow who tries to find some control back in her life –and memories– before she truly withdraws from society in her parent’s house. For that, she makes a (scandalous) list and asks her friend Leo to help. Problem is, Leo is in love with her (always has been) and it’s the last thing she wants. Even though steam isn’t the reason why I read romances, I loved it here, as it’s how Isabella gets a grip on herself and her life, discovering a lot of things about herself, and finally managing to grieve. I also loved all the hints about neurodivergence in her characters, and it perfectly fitted with the freedom she takes from society. In the end, What the Lady Wants is a page turner, but also a great book about women’s status, far away from clichés, perfect if you are in a Bridgerton hangover.

Thank you Emma Orchard, Boldwood books and NetGalley for the ARC. My opinions are my own.

What the Lady Wants is the third book in the Runaway Heiress series. This was a new to me author. The side characters had been MC in the previous book but I had no problem reading this as a standalone.

I really enjoyed this book and felt the emotion in the story. It was a neat twist on the idea of a spinster having memories for themselves before going off to live in a cottage by the sea. Instead with a widow having these experiences before embracing widowhood. An empowering way for the heroine to take control of her life. I loved the changes in thought that the heroine had throughout her journey. I was able to emphasize with her and thought it was a realistic procession.

It was easy to see from the beginning that Leo and Isabella’s plan would eventually implode but it didn’t make reading how it would happen any less enjoyable.

The hero is also lovingly called Bear due to his body hair.

It’s a bit heavier as grief and other topics are explored in the book.

The last third did seem to drag a bit as it started to get repetitive.

The side characters were endearing though (despite all their meddling) although one thing was forgiven too easily.

Overall, I enjoyed the writing and look forward to more from this author.

Content warnings (and possible spoilers are below).

There are three encounters plus other intimate and off the page scenes.

CW: Infertility (and being wrongly diagnosed), surprise baby, depression-I really wish the author would’ve put a note on this at the end as it’s referred to multiple times that the heroine was sick or unwell for a while after her husband’s death. It was appeared to be written in a more historical way but would’ve liked to have a note making the connection between historical and modern wording.

This is a captivating novel that delivers an intoxicating mix of heartbreak and romance, wrapped in the opulent world of Regency London.

Isabella Ashby is a woman on the edge of a new chapter—one forged from grief and defiance. Widowed for two years, she’s made a resolute decision: no more love, no more heartbreak. Her plan is to leave London, retire from society, and embrace the life of a grieving widow in Yorkshire. But before she abandons it all, Isabella decides she must check off a list—a list of daring experiences and reckless pleasures that will forever change her life.

Enter Captain Leo Winterton: a man bound by duty and honor, but also secretly in love with the widow he has long admired. When Isabella enlists him to help her fulfill her audacious list, the tension between them becomes undeniable. Leo’s loyalty to her is tested as he tries to navigate the fine line between giving her what she craves and protecting her from herself. The resulting chemistry is sizzling, filled with delicious tension that kept me turning the pages long into the night.

Isabella’s determination to never love again is understandable, yet tragic, and watching her slowly, inevitably open up to Leo was a beautiful. Leo, for his part, is a perfect balance of strength and vulnerability, a man caught between his honor and his heart's deepest desire. Their journey from proper society to scandalous intimacy is one that feels both forbidden and thrilling. The unexpected plot twists kept me anxiously turning the pages to see what happens next.

This is a beautifully written tale of second chances, emotional healing, and the liberating power of love. If you are one who loves a blend of historical romance, daring heroines, and swoon-worthy heroes, then this book is sure to satisfy.

What the Lady Wants is the third book in Emma Orchard’s The Runaway Heiress series. This follows the widowed Lady Isabella Ashby who we met in the previous book. She is a young widow who lost her husband in the war and was devastated. In this book she attempts to take back control of her life and her future. She decides she needs a lover to help her move on. She decides on Captain Leo Winterton with the avowal that she will never love any man apart from her late husband. Unbeknownst to Isabella, Leo has loved her for years. When she propositions him, Leo knows he cannot let her go to any other man and agrees. But when Isabella realises Leo has feelings for her, will she be able to face the truth of her own feelings? Or will it lead to ruin for them both?
This was, as always a very well written book with characters speaking and behaving within the strictures of the time. I do like that about the author. Isabella is a strong heroine – more so since she almost lost herself in her grief after her husband died. She is the one to realise last how she felt for Leo and it was understandable that she did not want to betray her love for Ash. Leo was a wonderful hero. He was a bit of a beta hero. He was very sweet and considerate of Isabella and always put her first. His crushing disappointment and subsequent actions to protect his heart when he realised Isabella might not ever be able to love him was reasonable.
While Isabella and Leo are the main crux of the novel, they are surrounded by a wonderful cast of characters. I love Hal and Cassandra [from book one] and the rest of the family.

Lady Isabella Ashby is grieving the loss of her husband and whilst determined to remain a widow she can't help but want just one more taste of the spicier things of life and the man she chooses to help her achieve her desire is the handsome Captain Leo Winterton. There is no doubt that Isabella would be totally ostracised from polite society if her connection to Leo Winterton were ever discovered as what is deemed acceptable for a gentle young lady in Regency England is certainly not included in the contents of Isabella's rather risqué list of experiences.

What the Lady Wants doesn't stop at the bedroom door but pushes us firmly inside to witness every intimate detail between Isabella and Leo and there's no denying the sexual chemistry between them however, that's not all the story gives us. It's also a gently unfolding love story between two characters who steal their way into your heart. As we have come to expect from this author the Regency setting is done well, all the constraints placed on women during this time in history is well known, so it was good to have a woman who set about getting what she wanted albeit in a way which ultimately would see her have make some difficult choices.

I have enjoyed travelling back to this world which the author recreates with a fine eye for detail and a fun sense of style. What the Lady Wants is now the third book in this series and whilst it is perfectly possible to read as a standalone story there are characters from previous books making an appearance which adds a nice sense of continuity. Perfect escapism from start to finish.

In the autumn of 1816, Isabella, Lady Ashby, re-enters society after a prolonged period of mourning her husband who was tragically killed at Waterloo. She is steadfast in her belief that she will never remarry, and wants to experience physical pleasure again on her own terms before retiring to live with her parents in Yorkshire. She has made a list which, if discovered, would create a scandal. She approaches a family friend, Captain Leo Winterton, who has a secret of his own. He agrees, partly to protect her from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous men, and partly in the hope he can change her mind about never marrying again.
The author paints a realistic picture of life in Regency England, highlighting the risks they are taking, and the graphic nature of the items on the list make sense in the context of the plot and motivations of the main characters. In a patriarchal society where women have little or no say in how they choose to live their lives, it is refreshing that here the woman is the stronger character.
The descriptive writing style and witty dialogue is reminiscent of Georgette Heyer, but with a modern twist. Isabella appeared briefly in the previous book in this series, A Duke of One’s Own, and it was good to catch up with some familiar characters. I really enjoyed reading What the Lady Wants, but found Isabella’s decision to go back and live with her parents very strange; she would lose any freedom she had gained, and I think her husband would have wanted her to be happy again. The ending felt a bit rushed, but maybe we will see more of Isabella in another book. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

What a wonderful, fast-paced book! At first, I didn't understand the prologue, but it was remedied in the first chapter. The FMC, Isabella, is on a project to make her let go of her husband, and the MMC roped in to help her. I didn't even know The List was going to be what it was. It was a nice surprise. I also liked the author's description of depression, something the FMC suffered from after the death of her husband.

The MMC fell first years before, and the FMC was unaware. Leo actually agreed to help because he thought it would bring a positive change to their relationship. I liked the progress of their relationship and how Isabella felt juggling her emotions, falling in love and feelings of betrayal. It all turned out nicely in the end. I liked the meddling of the characters in the book too.

I liked that Isabella's feelings and her relationship with her dead husband were not tainted. Lord Ashby was a good person and husband to her, I liked that it was stressed, something not really seen in genres like this. There was no unnecessary comparison.

This book was amazing and I finished it in record time. But, I would have loved an epilogue. Still worth it either way

This is the next book in a Regency series written by new author Emma Orchard. If you are a Bridgerton fan or like books in the Georgette Heyer style with a little more spice, you will love this series and indeed this book.
Lady Isabella Ashby is a young widow, married to Ash who died in her arms after Waterloo. She has suffered from her loss and now, after a couple of years, feels ready to go out into society again. However there are certain things she misses and she decides to find some unwary male to help her reclaim them before returning to Yorkshire and a celibate life. She has no intention to remarry and wishes to remain faithful to her late husband’s memory.
When she meets Captain Leo Winterton she has found her perfect accomplice for a no strings attached relationship. But, unbeknownst to Isabella, Leo has harboured feelings for her for a long time which will lead to some complications in her plan and lots of confusion and misery on both sides.
I liked the way this novel, set in past times but written in the 21st century, examined issues such as infertility ,mental health and of course grief. These are timeless themes that deserve to be mentioned.
Be warned that there is a lot of spice in the books and particularly in this one where Isabella has a list of actions she wants her lover to “experience” with her. There is not as much intrigue in this book as in the earlier ones- there are no villains as such which makes the story much simpler. I recommend this for a light hearted and fun Summer read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.

816 - London

Isabella Richmond, Lady Ashby Mauleveren, 21, is the widow of Lord Ashby, second son of the Eighth Duke of Northreding. After less than a year of marriage, Ashby was killed at Waterloo. Isabella went through a very difficult time grieving him. Now, she has come to London to stay with her sister-in-law, Lady blanche FitzHenry. Tonight, she is attending a ball for her brother-in-law Gabriel and his bride Georgiana in celebration of their marriage.

Captain Leo Winterton, 27, asked Isabella to dance and afterward she said she needed some fresh air so they step outside. She ends up kissing him telling him she wants to experience the physical side of marriage one more time before retiring to the country to live out her widowhood. Even though Ashby was her one true love, she wants to fulfill a list of physical things. He tells her that he is in love with a woman he can never have so he agrees. They promise they will not fall in love with one another. While they begin on the list, they then journey to a weeks-long house party where they hope to discretely complete the list. Just a physical union with no regrets, right?

I had mixed feelings about this book. The over-the-top erotic scenes were too much for me. I liked Leo and found him to be a truly nice guy but Isabella was a hot mess. However, the story has a nice ending so I will push my rating to 4 stars. Check it out and see what you think.

What the Lady Wants: The Runaway Heiress Book #3

By Emma Orchard: I read A Duke of One's Own-gave it 4 ⭐

Format: E-book, 306 pgs.

Publication date: 8-14-24, Read 8-14-24

🙏🏽Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC💙! I voluntarily give my honest review, and all opinions are my own.

Genre: Historical Romance, Adult/Women's Fic

Tropes: unrequited love, H falls first, surprise pregnancy

TW: erotica, infertility, grief, depression

Summary: Lady Ashby/Isabella (20) is still mourning the death of her husband Ash two years ago but wants to have a last "hooray." Before retiring from society with her parents in widowhood, she writes a list of things she wants to experience sexually and asks her friend to help her. Captain Leo Winterton is an honorable naval captain whom she met in Brussel two years ago. He's been in love with her since they met and now is his chance to convince her to be with him.

🤔My Thoughts: I enjoyed this Regency romance about a woman discovering her own pleasure. In many historical romances I've read the women were either clueless about sex, or they were professionals. It was refreshing to see a woman ask for what she wanted, no matter how scandalous. Leo was as gracious and caring as they come. He was a true gentleman smitten with Isabella. He got his chance to make her his only after dealing with some misunderstandings and interfering relatives.
