Enter the world of Heathley Academy, from new indie author Bethany Rayne. Read ‘The Absence of You’ now for a gripping fix of boy next door, enemies to lovers, high school romance.
Grayson Three years ago, my childhood best friend left without a word. Now she’s back and she thinks we can pick up where we left off. She’s wrong. I’m not the same boy she left behind. And it’s all her fault.
Dahlia I had my reasons for leaving, but he doesn’t want to hear them. He’s changed. But so have I. I came back hoping to find my best friend, but what I found was so much more.

Bethany Rayne writes contemporary adult romance. She lives in a quiet corner of northwest England with her family and their crazy Cockapoo. When Bethany isn’t writing or working at her day job, she loves nothing more than drinking copious amounts of coffee while finding new authors and binge reading their backlists. Her favourite stories are those filled with plenty of angst and tears, but only if there’s a happy ever after at the end of it.
This is fine, honestly. If you like academy books it seems to be a decent one. I mean, you’ll have to accept that passing swim class is a requirement for graduation, but whatever.
I just can’t handle the forced marriage trope when plenty of kids find themselves without parental support after high school. There is zero reason for this guy to allow his father to make him marry someone at 18. (And less than zero reason for him to let his father make him STEAL PAINTINGS?!?).
If it were almost anything other than “I’m privileged and very smart and have a decent shot at being a literal Olympian; I have NO CHOICE but to do all these illegal things my dad is forcing me to do!!” I’d probably keep reading. But that’s just one of those things I really have no patience for.
As an aside, as someone who absolutely hates flashbacks, there are a lot of them. But they are at least short. But they’re not in any order so tbh I’m not really sure what the point is. So far they haven’t added much.
Rollercoaster of emotions in this dark childhood best friends to lovers romance! Grayson and Juliet have a steamy and passion connection that it’s fate for them to be together. Enjoyed reading and a must read! *childhood best friends *boy next door *second chance *suspense *he loves me, he loves me not *private academy/high school *angst *steamy *dark romance *miscommunication *HEA * addiction (not MC) *secrets
I loved getting to know Grayson and Dahlia and did not expect the twists and turns in this book! I already cannot wait for the second Healthey Academy novel!
This was a great book with plenty of ups and downs and a whole heap of angst.
The story is all about Grayson and Dahlia who after being childhood best friends haven’t seen or spoken to each other for several years, after Dahlia was forced to move and stay away with her mother, who was/is an alcoholic.
It’s immediately obvious that Grayson and Dahlia share an unbreakable bond, despite Graysons attempts at hating Dahlia it’s clear that he’s fighting a losing battle and that his feelings for her are stronger than ever.
This is a story filled with pain and trauma both on and off page and at times it’s a heavy read and you should absolutely check the trigger warnings if you have any triggers, but beneath all the pain and heartbreak it’s a story of strength, love, resilience and an enduring kind of love that can overcome almost anything.
If you’re looking for a story with a great plot, more than a little OWD and low level spice then this is absolutely the book for you.
Dahlia and Greyson were childhood friends. After 3 years she comes back home to heathley academy. She thought coming back it would be the same between them. Oh she was so wrong. Greyson is not the boy she left behind. Now he’s the popular boy in school with a crazy girlfriend. When Dahlia left, something broke inside Greyson. Now his father has him where he wants him get married and make a business deal with a a partner. They fight with each other. Once he stops and hears her out, he falls for her all over again. He has a secret about her. And he hopes it doesn't break what they have built again. New author for me can’t wait to see what she brings next.
This is such a fantastic book! Daliha and Greyson were the best of friends. They only got to see each other when Daliha would visit her grandmother on school breaks. Life intervened, and they grew apart. This is a true second chance romance between two people who have so many secrets and tremendous upheaval over the years. I loved this book, and I definitely recommend it. Please be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in!
😐😐😐😐i don't even have the energy to talk about how stupid this was. just that grayson is the world's biggest drama queen, EVERYTHING revolves around this idiot, it could be ANYTHING and he's still be able to make himself a victime. okay your mommy is absent and your daddy is a bitch, THERE ARE BIGGER PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD. Dahlia literally never knew her dad then she finds out that her dad's in prison for killing her grandad who raped her mom which caused her into depression and addiction yet she NEVER once acted like the little bitch that grayson was. and he had the audacity to be jealous and possessive of her when HE was the one who moved on literally 6months after she left. all he did was whine And the stupid miscommunication, trope halfway through with the time old ".I'm doing this to protect you" stupid trope where grayson acted like a dick again to " peotect her" Thinking he was being a hero when he could have EASILY told her the truth, obviously there were no repercussions or consequences And no grovel for him because when did men ever take accountability
safety: it was not safe for me ngl -childhood friends to strangers to lovers -she's a virgin, he had a girlfriend whom he's had sex with for the 3 year seperation , he said he never loved her but he did have feelings for her. They were just never strong and then ultimately, she started cheating on him. -owd: his gf charlotte and him had been broken up for a few months but had to pretend to be together so they kiss and touch alot during the book, and alot of it was on purpose to hurt Dahlia, and charlotte is an evil bitch omd: none 🙄🙄 just that hypocrite being jealous

This is a debut novel for this author, and for that alone I have to say a big well done. It’s never easy releasing your first book to the wild.
This is a long book. If you like a book that delves into so much detail then this is a book for you. It’s friends to lovers, YA, corrupt families, family secrets, and of course all the drama that comes from a teenage relationship and posh school.
I liked Grayson and Dahlia, I was rooting for them all the way. They’ve both had so much to deal with in their short lives it’s no wonder they’re both all over the place.
I liked the story. For me it was very long, and this is where I knocked a star off, all the back and forth from past to present isn’t something I like as a rule unless the past brings something to the table. The last thirty percent of the book had me reading so quickly to find out what was going to happen next. Everything was going on and I wanted the answers, good or bad.
All in all, this author did a great job developing her book, it was well written in terms of grammar and punctuation. I’d definitely recommend it to the YA lover.
I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series when it releases.
It was kind of a tragic story about a boy and a girl from the past to the present. It flipped back and forth to past and present, but not chronological, which I found a bit disturbing personally. I like thinks in order, so for in the past going from young to present. Grownup Grayson wasn’t very nice at first, but with a father like him no wonder. I feel for him, having parents, but also not. Daliha was a nice responsible girl, with a lot to deal with, and than everything with Grayson. All in all a good, at first I thought a bit predictable story, but no I did not see it coming in the end, book.
Dahlia is such a strong person who has dealt with so much for being so young. Grayson has also had far too much hurt in his life. Their story is full of emotions, miscommunication, secrets, and heartbreak. There is definitely alot of back and forth, twists and turns before they get where they need to be. Great read, I really enjoyed it!
Wow love this best friends to eventual lovers story. The twists and turns they have to take to get to a happy ending are so torturous, frustrating, sad but their love is epic, I couldn't put the book down l! Let's not even mention how Dahlia came to be and that story!!!!
Grayson and Dahlias story is all kinds of teen angst but with huge dark twisty hurdles 🖤
Can't wait for book 2! I think Callie's story will be even more dark and twisted
This book made my emotions feel like they were on a roller coaster, going up and down and in loops!
I enjoyed all the detail and the depth of the relationship between Dahlia and Grayson. They are soul mates that time and distance and other people could not keep them apart. Hearing bits and pieces of Dahlia's parents relationship made me connect dots to that of Dahlia and Greyson.
I love that even when they fought Dahlia only ever tried to see the good in Grayson, and that she loved him so deeply, when he felt no one ever did or could love him. And seeing the lengths he would go to, to keep her safe made my heart ache when it meant he had to hurt and lie to her to do so.
I am curious to know a bit more about Callie and Asher, and their history, so I'm glad that book 2 will focus more on them.
So it’s not 12.30 am and I literally just finished reading what was one of the best books I’ve read this year . The Absence Of You is not only book 1 in The Heathley Academy Series but it’s a must read for anyone who is a fan of the following tropes 🖤Dark Romance/ childhood best friends 💜High School academy 🖤enemies to lovers 💜boy next door 🖤second chance/ suspense 💜and all the fesls . Greyson and Dahlia were childhood best friends/ each other’s everything. But circumstances of which I’m not going to mention tore them apart and changed their lives forever . But that only the beginning of their story . Fast forward 3 years later and Dahlia returns home hoping to reconnect with her very best friend. Well imagine her surprise when Grayson the boy she knew better than herself is completely different. Now the popular boy at school with a. Girlfriend who you could definitely define as being crazy . What does their future hold . Can they find their way past all the hurt to once again open their hearts to one another ? All the angst , the witty banter , the secrets , the mystery, the suspense, the love , the passion, the drama , the loss , the pain , the miscommunication, the revelations, the second chances , the family and friendships. I really do feel like I was just taken on the ride of my life and completely blown away in all the best ways . I found myself speechless, then yelling outta pure frustration. I had moments my heart literally felt like it was beating right outta my chest and then bam breaking the next . And yes I did smile , laugh , sob like a baby and root so freaking hard the whole way through. The Absence Of you is such a beautifully written and emotionally charged love story everyone needs do read 💜💜💜
The Absence of You is a deeply emotional, heart-wrenching romance that explores love, loss, and the kind of grief that never truly leaves you — it just changes shape. Jewel E. Ann delivers a story that feels raw, intimate, and painfully beautiful.
This book captures what it means to love someone so completely that their absence becomes a presence of its own. The emotions are heavy and honest, and the characters are written with a vulnerability that makes their pain feel achingly real. Nothing is easy, nothing is neat — and that’s what makes it hit so hard.
The romance is tender yet devastating, built on shared moments, deep connection, and the quiet understanding that love doesn’t disappear just because circumstances change. The story allows space for grief, healing, and the complicated feelings that come with moving forward while still holding on.

Dahlia and Graysons story is a must read! Childhood best friends to enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers. Honestly I did feel like I got a lot of whiplash at points, but when I take into account the age it made sense.
I could write a long review as to why you should read this ALL THE AMAZING REASONS. However, here’s the reason I can’t. It will ruin the experience! This one the reader has to go in blind!
We know the main plot points from the summary, I do suggest checking out the triggers that can be found at the beginning of the book.
I will say this is my first time reading this author and from page one it was gripping! Your heart will hurt for both these characters, but there will be a HEA
Absence of You is a steamy romance that includes enemies to lovers, second chance love, boy next story, and childhood best friend tropes. The story is about Greyson and Dahila who come from very different backgrounds. As children, they grow up spending summers together and become best friends. That is until one summer Dahila disappears from Greyson’s life. Greyson, feeling abandoned by Dahila, harbors ill feelings towards her. One day out of the blue Dahila shows up at Heatley Academy to attend school. Things are bumpy between Greyson and Dahila at first but it doesn’t take long for their love to rekindle. Things are never that easy though and there are forces at hand that are continually trying to keep them apart! Will their love prevail?
A beautifully composed romance story filled with characters that were realistic and addictive at the same time. A great balance of drama, betrayal, compassion, emotional upheavals, blackmail, deceit, heartbreak but all with an overwhelming sense of true love and struggles. I really loved the concept of how the story was composed with flash back moments to present day to give a depth to the scenarios that occurred throughout. As a new Author I was really happy with her take on this romantic story and definitely look forward to her next story following on from the friends characters of Callie and Asher.
Wow, this book had me hooked from start to finish! Grayson and Dahlias stories were beautifully written and constructed by Bethany. This story definitely takes you on and adventure of twists and turns no one this young should ever have to endure. Their story packs a punch 100%. Both are dealing with trauma, abuse, lies, and deciet from the people that they should be able to trust wholeheartedly, but throughout their story, there has never been any doubt that the love they have for each other has always stood strong. I can't wait for book 2, but I highly recommend you give this series a read.
I can already tell how great this series is going to be! I am obsessed with how good this book was. The plot, the characters, everything! I loved every moment and I’m so excited to read Asher and Callie’s book, you can tell they have undeniably connection but something has obviously happened.
Now, dahlia and Grayson! Friends to enemies to lovers!! Ahhhhh so addictive. I love how protective Grayson is for Dahlia even when he wanted to hate her.
Dahlias mums past is so sad, not only was so assaulted but she lost the love of her life for protecting her. What joey did was so heroic. I would love a book about Roxie and joey!
I was everything! 4.75⭐️

I really loved this book. It has a wonderful trope list including: *childhood best friends *boy next door *second chance *suspense *enemies to lovers *he loves me, he loves me not *private academy / high school *angst *steamy Dahlia and Grayson's story really interested me I'm always a sucker for a childhood friends to lovers story but then throw in enemies in between and it's even better. This story has a lot of depth, emotion and angst. I loved the characters, especially Grayson. He was a complex character. I will definitely look for more books from this author.
YA, Friends to lovers, romantic suspense, with some organised crime thrown in for good measure!
There is so much to love about Greyson and Dahlia's story, with all its twists and turns. It has all the elements of a good, keep you on your toes, YA novel.
The story was well thought out, it flowed beautifully and Ms Rayne's writing style is effortless and so easy to read. I found myself reading long into the night because I couldn't stop turning the pages!
I had my mind blown so many times during this! I loved the childhood best friends theme with Grayson and Dahlia. The back and forth with them was the absolute best. So many tropes that had me devour this book; boy next door, childhood best friend, second chances, touch her and die, private academy, suspense, secrets, betrayal, and spice. I loved her grandmother Dee that she moved in with, she was an absolute sweetheart. The ending was so good and I'm excited for the second book.
When Dahlia comes back home after three years she thinks they things will fall right back into place with her best friend Greyson. She was in for a big surprise. This book was one crazy but fantastic rode from beginning to end. I enjoyed every minute of it. This is a voluntary and honest review.
This is the first time I've read an academy book and although it isn't my favourite genre, I found the story and characters engaging. This is the author's first book and it was well written. Well done, I look forward to reading more of her work.
This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed every bit of it. I loved the childhood best friends trope. This was a very well done debut novel, I also enjoyed the past and present pov. It was a roller coaster of a ride!
