((Audio Book Review)) Books 1-4
-Sigh- I wanted to like this, I wanted to enjoy this book series. Honestly I probably would have dropped it after the first book but the narration really helped keep me in it so don't blame them. I'm not the super picky type either where I expect award winning writing. I mean I love the harem genre which if you know you know is pure man trash and I'm okay with that. This book felt like a nice "brain off" adventure sort of like slipping into a warm bath, it's nothing fancy but sometimes it's nice to just relax. I would have give it a 3 star but I just can't. I even enjoyed the slow development of the first book giving it an almost "slice of life" vibe. Though later books lose that and just randomly jump large gaps of time out of no where making it feel rushed.
I even forgave the author for some really bad mess ups here and there figuring that they were a new author and that they would slowly fix/improve as the series went on. I've seen it before where a first book for a new author has glaring issues even though a good chunk of the book to be really fun and interesting and as the series matures the author learns and the books become better and better....
That is NOT this series. I'll give a vague review and then add a line where below are spoiler specific examples of my complaints.
Most of the thing I can complain about fall under two things and/or a combination of them.
1. The continuity is AWFUL
This is exactly as stated, in universe rules and logic? Pfffff why would the author keep track of those.
2. The plot has plot armor
I don't know if this has an actual term for it but this is what I call it. This is when the author isn't creative enough to get the story to go where they want to do what they want to do so instead they force it in a way that doesn't make any sense. It's like being in a video game and running into an invisible wall that you wouldn't expect to be there which forces you to go a specific way. No one likes it and it doesn't look good.
Things like characters randomly becoming stupid or acting completely different from their established personality just to make the plot work. Fundamentals of how the world works in power and balance being very strict to start and the later being ignored or changing on a case by case basis. Spells/skills characters have being completely forgotten or just disappearing.
It really is sad too because something like 80% of the book is fine but the 20% always seems to hit at the most important times. If you can still enjoy this book power too you but if you pay attention to any bit of detail just avoid it.

Book 1
This one should have been a warning but like I said I've read book series that start out like this one that recover and become amazing.
The worst isekai/lit-rpg trope: The fake gamer.
MC grew up playing video games he even refers to himself as a GAMER. On top of that he also according to the story played D&D the table top game and I'm not talking once in high school. While he might not have been a consistent once a week for years D&D player he did not sound like a stranger to "gaming" in any kind of way.
SO WHY THE FUCK DOESN'T THIS CHARACTER UNDERSTAND BASIC GAMING CONCEPTS. I fucking HATE THIS. What's worse is that it's selectively ON and OFF. He bounces from being a moron that doesn't understand the most simple RPG aspects but at the same time ALL of his success is attributed to his knowledge of gaming strategy and concepts.
In the first book alone his is CONSTANTLY surprised by every new thing he encounters that any experienced gamer would already know. OMG THIS SWORD HAS A +2 STAT?!?!?! THAT'S CRAZY... no it's not. WAIT GRIFFONS ARE REAL MONSTERS!?!?!? Yes you dip shit you were just fighting goblins and why wouldn't they be?
It's like he is the James Bond of portal guardians. Absolute garbage at keeping anything about him not being normal secret. He was literally shouting it out loud and by the books logic the nexus should have killed him in book one.
Shauna asks "how did your shadow leopard manage to get in here?" which immediately afterwards she info dumps the entire wiki about shadow leopards including their shadow step ability. I thought at first it was the system taking her over to answer her own question.. that she knew... but nope it was just her asking something for no fucking reason just to give the excuse to give the reader info that we already knew? It made 0 sense.
Book 2
The knowledge distribution of this new world MC traveled to is completely stupid.
Don't worry MC is still the Fake AF Gamer. (But only selectively)
He continues to freak out about things an actual person who played video and table top games wouldn't bat an eye at. Sure they might be excited or giddy about it but that's not what this is. What's worse is at the same time MC seems to be the only person who understand anything about adventuring. Because millions or even billions of other beings across the entire Nexus Verse over thousands or more years having never been exiled from the Nexus could never have figured out how a shield bash works... or that sharing instructive info behind fairy tales would be good. Nope nope all your children need are child bed time stories and then to be thrown out into the deep end of life completely clueless at 18. It's not just Shauna it's everyone. Like no one has ever thought that mentoring or sharing knowledge was possible.
The "Advisor" aka the wiki's and knowledge base of these universe that are trained specially he goes to them to learn about his class abilities and during that conversation it's revealed that the reason his group is doing so well is because they have.. group composition. aka a healer, tank, scout, etc. This concept BLOWS THE MIND of the advisor. Apparently once again this civilization completely existing around adventuring for thousands of years is too stupid to figure out a balanced group would do better and just randomly throwing people together? Oh and then the Advisor is also completely shocked to find out that MC and his group would run away from combat if they thought they were going to die or out matched... you know because common sense is to just die...
Next up the "DEMI GOD" who from what I can tell is basically a sentient magic AI. I can forgive it for being short sighted possible in some ways but this this is DUMB. This thing exists in all of the worlds including the ones it doesn't control like earth. It can see everything that is going on in these worlds it can even manipulate everything in those worlds, people, bank accounts, perceptions. While it's not omnipotent it's fucking close. This Demi God has no concept of what a dungeon is or how to make one even though it should be able to reference THE COLLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF EARTH. Why? Because MC has to look smart or it would ruin the plot. There are many creative ways this could have been explain but nope MC just suggests some basic ass shit and the Demi God pauses and then slaps its forehead like "wow I never though for that you're so smart I love you human"
MC tames a new beast! YEAY!... wait he can't communicate with it? YOU HAVE A SPELL THAT YOU LITERALLY USED ON YOUR FIRST SUMMON TO GET TELEPATHY WITH IT. Yeah... no clue what you're talking about that spell doesn't exist anymore.
Also MC is working VERY hard to bring his world back into the Nexus-verse... you know by leveling and then going back to his plush comfort world where he enjoys taking things only made possible through modern technology and then bring those things into the primitive magic world. He and his girls escape to earth because it's so much better being able to have a real shower and order food. You know modern technological convenience... that they are ACTIVELY HELPING TO DESTROY AND REMOVE FROM THE WORLD. How did you not see this coming? They are actively working to remove everything that they love about being able to visit earth for.
Book 3
Back to the James Bond the worst best secret agent ever... Their new party member was their advisor, who has the special ability to change to an adventurer class BUT ITS A SECRET SHHHHHHHHHH DON'T TELL ANYONE. NO ONE CAN KNOW.
Hey lets walk around the town with our new party that was already FAMOUS and the only thing anyone talks about with the advisor who was FAMOUS for being the FAMOUS parties advisor to the point where people wanted her as their advisor just because she was the advisor of a FAMOUS party. Obviously no one will notice that. Nope.
Back to the destroying the things they love about earth. As they relax in their safe Demi god house they have a conversation about not knowing if restaurants are still open because they fucked everything over.... they have this conversation right after ORDERING DELIVERY FOOD. You know something that requires not only restaurants to be open and working but also having delivery drivers on staff.
MC is attacked in a "warded inn" that was stated earlier would protect him no explanation as to how. Also maybe I'm remembering this wrong but I could swear in book 1 it was established that TOWNS like the full CITIES in the nexus universe were safe zones meaning you can't attack others there or the system it's self would punish you. So if I am remembering that correctly that whole rule of the universe was just removed because.. why not. (Could be wrong about this one hard to keep track of all the inconsistencies)
Book 4
MC must be breaking the universe so hard that even the logic of the book can't follow its self. MC's "brother" TEXTS HIM. He sent a TEXT to MC's PHONE. You know something requiring him to have his phone number/contact info. When MC calls his brother he doesn't know who is calling and is surprised it's MC... the person he directly texted on the same fuckin number he is getting a call from. You're telling me he didn't add that contact to his phone?
And the final straw. The plot has so much plot armor that rules only matter when the plot wants them too. The author has been constantly beating into us the difference that levels make between people. From book 1 10 levels is an exponentially higher amount. Meaning that someone who is level 20 is basically a god to someone level 10. (keep this in mind) So much so that every zone in a world has a range of 10 levels and when you enter a new zone it tells you that if you are not the max level of the previous zone and the lowest of the next that you will be insta dead. That means in this universe a level 19 shouldn't be able to stand up to a level 21 because stats matter that much.
So while in the dungeon MC and his group now level 90.. (no clue when that happened pretty sure we just time skipped from level 70 something) is surprise attacked by a level 100. THEY ALL DIE story over. Or at least that's what would happen you know if shit made sense. Nope they defeat it with minor damage and feeling exhausted afterwards even after having been grinding all day before that fight.
Next up and I haven't even finished this part of the book yet because I had to stop and write this review. (Major spoilers)
MC goes to meet his older half brother. MC and his group are level 91'ish. He is impressed that his brother is the highest level he has heard about on earth at level 35 (idr they mention it like once almost as if we remembered their levels shit wouldn't make sense...) So their level gap is 56... FIFTY FUCKING SIX LEVELS. when a level gap of 10 is that of a god to an ant obviously this is well beyond that no questions asked.... Is that plot armor I hear fucking everything up?.... yep
MC is betrayed by step bro and is poisoned. He uses a poison that he is told that even a level 100 couldn't resist that he some how can afford. Lets not even get into the fact that no one can make gold like MC and with how the economy works with items going up with their level that Step bro could never have afforded this without spending years of saving and not spending since he had to struggle through life as poor child of a single mother. Anyway he uses this BS poison which honestly poison has only been used one other time in the books and isn't really explained but it was deadly then. But if it were that deadly more people would use it and then more counter measures would be formed etc.
Even so his level 91 healer will save him! You know with a restore/cleans spell, or a major heal. Nope that wont work.. because.. also this poison deals more damage than she can heal. you know like 200 damage.. wait didn't her heal give like 500 hp? (yes it did) When did that get reduced... Also it was established really early on that all spells and abilities LEVEL WITH them meaning they become more powerful as they do so even if I'm wrong and her heal did 200 hp the last time she used it where they gave a number was like 30+ levels ago..
Okay fine the poison will kill him what ever we can res MC after. So right now lets kill or detain the Step Bro Big Bad Guy who is level 35. Nope he has one of his wifes with him! Lulu put a a magical plot shield around him!!! You know the the spell cast by a level 35 what ever she is that can easily resist any effort to break it by someone 56 levels higher. A literal fucking plot armor.
I just can't. If you're going to have rules in your fucking world follow them. I haven't even finished this scene yet it's just so fucking bad and makes no sense. I'll finish the book now but I'm not hopeful.
Yep more stupid. Trying to introduce his.. god power of manipulating mana in the stupidest way possible. Shield pops and a LEVEL 91 shoots and arrow at a level 40 and he is fast enough to block it with is WOODEN SHIELD. kay. oh because MC has to be the one to be cool. Now we are remembering levels.. kinda. Poison also has only ticks inconsistently, MC is 1 tick away from dead and it's paused so he can do stuff. It was ticking regularly and going up in damage 100, 200, 300. Mc only has 300 health and we have put the 400 tick on pause. And now MC just stated... Step bro needs to die... or else his PID wont release the antidote inside it..... you know the established rule that you can't get into ANYONES PID and if you try everything inside it is magically destroyed unless it's the antidote needed right now by the MC...
He gets the antidote and then is healed for 500 hp... step bros other wife (level 35) using the same spell MC's wife at 91 was using and healing 200 hp only to then heal himself with natures blessing.. the lesser heal he has even though he has the greater heal spell... because.. idk also his natures blessing heals for 200 HP.... jesus fucking christ if you are going to use a math based system at least write this shit down somewhere so when you use it later you know how much things heal for.
There is so much more but I just can't. I really thought the author would improve but it's getting worse.

Shield pops and a LEVEL 91 shoots and arrow at a level 40 and he is fast enough to block it with is WOODEN SHIELD. kay. oh because MC has to be the one to be cool. Now we are remembering levels.. kinda. Poison also has only ticks inconsistently, MC is 1 tick away from dead and it's paused so he can do stuff. It was ticking regularly and going up in damage 100, 200, 300. Mc only has 300 health and we have put the 400 tick on pause. And now MC just stated... Step bro needs to die... or else his PID wont release the antidote inside it..... you know the established rule that you can't get into ANYONES PID and if you try everything inside it is magically destroyed unless it's the antidote needed right now by the MC...
He gets the antidote and then is healed for 500 hp... step bros other wife (level 35) using the same spell MC's wife at 91 was using and healing 200 hp only to then heal himself with natures blessing.. the lesser heal he has even though he has the greater heal spell... because.. idk also his natures blessing heals for 200 HP.... jesus fucking christ if you are going to use a math based system at least write this shit down somewhere so when you use it later you know how much things heal for.
There is so much more but I just can't. I really thought the author would improve but it's getting worse.

Contradicting Every Plot In Book 1 & 2
I’m not going to point out specifics, but many main plot points and rules of this system are completely reversed in this book. The author tossed plot consistency out the window on multiple occasions. Not only that, from one paragraph to the next things reverse. Unsummon companions and then 1 paragraph afterwards they are instead sitting outside an inn. Numerous times levels are supposedly gained, but if you go back 2 chapters the character is the same level, or half a book previously a stat is improved to a point and then it’s done all over again to the same value later. This has been one of the weakest, most poorly defined and implemented system universes I have ever read. I’m done with this series and probably this author. I couldn’t finish the book and gave up at 92%. To much inconsistency wrapped in a weak string of plots with poorly developed characters and events.

Great story
The story is great. The editing needs a little more attention to detail. A few typos, such as the word gone, instead of done and in one chapter in a paragraph it says he unsummoned his animal companions because he didn't want to leave them outside all night and the very next paragraph it says he left them outside.
This is something that used to be quite common in this authors early books but it's the first time in the last few I've noticed it again. Hopefully ot won't become a habit in the series.

A little better than the last one
This book still had some glaring inconsistencies, but there was a lot less than the last book. The heavy handed nature of science not working in the future is bothersome, and doesn't really make much sense, I wish the author would drop that thread, or at least tone it down. As someone else mentioned, the last bit of the story felt rushed and out of left field, and was not described very well, i am still confused as to why it happened at all.

Not very good! Lazy writing and weak plot.
Disappointment on entire book. Lots of needless filler, poor plot lines with holes everywhere. Weak male character who comes off as dumb not heroic, saved by his smart female supporting cast. No thrills or surprises. Bad pacing makes it hard to even want to finish the book. Just bad writing.

Great Read
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I sincerely hope that the rest of you out there enjoy it as much as I did. TRS-80 or trash 80 was the First computer I wrote a program for. It was in basic but worked. Didn't even have a floppy but a cassette drive. Would love to see more of secret portal.

Fun read
I liked the action, characters and story in this book. The bad guys get their due justice while the heroes keep leveling and progressing to new areas. The best teaser in this book is that earth gets systemized. So the heroes must decide whether to help humanity or continue in the foriegn World.

March 23, 2025A fun dungeon and dragon-type adventure book with an enjoyable main character, the third book in series. Detrimental in that the series is a harem-type dive series. Earth is populated with dungeons causing much chaos. Lots of time was spent describing food. Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. Borrowed with Kindle Unlimited.

Good ending of this story
Enjoyed the action. The fact of loving sex without the graphic details was refreshing. The references to dnd were appropriate. Basically I enjoyed the set of three books and am starting the series advertised at the end of these books. Good read.

Very good writing
Levesque has true talent. The characters are solid and fun. The plot unfolds with the occasional very surprising twists. I am greatly enjoying this series.
