The Pinnacle: a short story

Rate this book
The duty had fallen to Cor to take his nephew Daron to the top of the Pinnacle, for no one else dared. The hard part was making a game out of it so that the boy would not suspect. Some lies were necessary for the greater good, after all. Weren't they?

Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee in the US, I transported myself to southeastern Australia in 2007, where I now spend my time dodging parrot droppings, racking my brain, and contemplating my navel. My favourite book genres are sci-fi and fantasy, but I'll enjoy pretty much anything that tells a good story. In early 2020, my wife and I moved to the Blue Mountains, and have so far been loving it up here.

I like to write stuff. Currently am working on a sequel to Of Time-Cracked Granite . I also run The Otherspect Substack, moderate the Otherspect Storytelling and Discussion Forum over on Discord, and blog at www.otherspect.com. Nice to meet you :-)

It's difficult to create a good story in the short form. You have to build suspense, define characters, and have a complete resolution with a very small word count. Gaines Post did it all in this short story.

In full disclosure, Gaines sent this to me (I didn't stumble upon it myself), but my opinions on the strength of the story are my own. I'm a picky reader, and most works sent to me like this are "not ready for primetime." I usually give the authors some advice on how to fix it and go along my way. I won't go into the details of this short, as it's easy to ruin it but it has a nice "Twilight Zone" vibe and is well written and reads very smoothly. Give it a try, it's a short read that is well worth the time.

Wow.

Just. Wow.

How on earth can such power be held by a few pages?

Everything I read changes me. I have no idea the changes this story will bring. I am still stunned.

Love this: Then
he sighed as only a man who has seen and accepted death can do.

I was diagnosed as dead once. I accepted it. What else can you do, when medical professionals tell you there is no chance you will live out the week?

I came back from the dead.

Not many people know what that feels like, but D. G. nailed it. People reading this story will know what that feels like.

That is the Power of Words, and I have seldom seen it used with a raw brutality that strikes straight to the soul.

Tales such as this make me grateful that I am a reader.

I read this some time ago, I thought I reviewed it, but I didn't!

This is a short story about a boy who yearns to reach beyond the boundaries of his small village. He does so, but at his, and everyone else's, peril.

I enjoyed the way the author described the hike the boy and his uncle take, and the reveal at the end is interesting, but not unexpected. Still, a good short read.

Would make a good prequel...

Interesting read with a twist at the end... very short but it hints at a bigger world. I would like to see more but even if there isn't a larger story in the work, it is a good short story.
