When I become the guardian of my friend’s rebellious kids, I feel like I’m drowning. That’s when he floats into my life and throws me a lifeline.
The moment our eyes meet over the fence, the connection’s undeniable. Sig isn’t just my hot dreamy neighbor. He owns a sprawling water park and he has an effortless way with kids.
But beneath his perfect exterior lies a quirky the man of my dreams spends his days as a floating bath toy.
Can I really fall head over heels for a rubber duckie? Only time (and a lot of bath time fun) will tell.
Mia Harlan lives in Canada with her husband (who’s definitely Not a Vampire) and their adorably fluffy cat. They recently welcomed a Mini Mortal (a baby girl) and are happy to report she doesn't have fangs.
Mia is a librarian by day and an author by night. She's been reading romance since she turned 13 and published her first novel in mid-2019. She writes humorous, quirky (and mostly paranormal) reverse harem romance as Mia Harlan. She also plans to start publishing teen paranormal romance as Mia Meade once her Mini Mortal is a tad older and she can get back to her writing routine.
Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door written by Mia Harlan was so cute and absolutely hilarious, but surprisingly it dealt with some sad topics that left a rock on my chest. Don't let the title scare you away, I laughed so much while reading this novella. The title and cover definitely had me fooled, but let me just say, I LOVED it so much. Mia Harlan definitely had me surprised with this quirky little novella. After loving this book, I'm definitely going to check out Mia's other works, she just has a way with words and making me laugh so much. I went into this novella blind, and I truly think that's what made me love it even more than I bargained for. I laughed way too much, I had tears streaming down my face. I have never read Mia Harlan before, but now she has my attention. The cover is so beautifully detailed and I'll admit it, that's why I grabbed this book, those beautiful covers always capture my attention. I can't recommend this novella enough, if you need something light and cute, then Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door is the book for you. The topics weren't too heavy, but they were heavy enough to leave a rock on my chest. Please do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this novella May 17th, 2024.Mia, I love you, thank you for making me kick my feet in the air and giggle nonstop. You can literally read this novella less than under an hour and have the best time of your life.

Shapeshifter's- A man or woman with the ability to change their physical form.
"DUCK A DUCKITY DUCK".
When Rachel becomes the guardian for her best friend's three rebellious children, Rachel feels like she's drowning. These kids had the worst body odor, but they wouldn't take a shower because they wanted to rebel against Rachel because the kids felt like Rachel took their grandmother away from them, even though Rachel just paid for their grandmother to go on a cruise and take time for herself. Rachel is the godmother to her best friend Janey's three children, Lisa and Anna are fraternal twins, and Noah is their younger brother. Rachel has sworn off men and dating because she wants to be a responsible godmother to her best friend's children. My girl, Rachel, I love you so much, you did the best you can. When Rachel and the children are yelling over taking a shower, that's when their neighbor Sig jumps in. Don't even get me started on Sig, he's a blondie, with piercing blue eyes, and extremely muscular, totally drool worthy. Sig is a shape shifter, he has the ability to turn himself into a rubber duck. Sig also owns Rubber Duckie World, which is a water park with massive water slides, pools with bubbles, The Duckie Tub which is basically a pool with billions of rubber ducks. Sig made me laugh so much, he was so cute and he's definitely great with children.
Sig decides to take Rachel and the kids to his water park a day before the grand opening, and honestly it changed Rachel's life and she became closer with the kids which was such a heart warming moment. As Rachel and Sig spend more time together, Rachel learns about Sig's superpower and how he turns into a rubber duck. Rachel also learns during spicy time that as one of Sig's shifter powers, he doesn't need to breathe when he's underwater. As someone who loves fashion and clothes, there's one moment where I can't agree with Rachel, when Sig wears yellow board shorts, Rachel thinks it's the hottest thing ever. I don't have anything against board shorts or the color yellow, but it's just not my style, but yellow makes everything sunshiney and bright. As crazy as it sounds, I want to visit Rubber Duckie World and experience my inner childhood and have the best time of my life at this crazy and cool water park. Rachel and Sig were so cute and they both made me laugh so much. Sig basically helped bring these children closer to Rachel as she is their godmother and it just warmed my heart so much. I just wanted to reach into my kindle and give Rachel the biggest hug as she was drowning to become the best godmother and honor her best friend the best she can. I mean how freaking cool would it be to be a rubber duck shifter?
This romance was absolutely ridiculous and I loved every minute of reading it! The story follows Rachel, a carefree woman ready to settle down and prioritize becoming the guardian of her godchildren, and Sig, her temporary neighbor who rescues her and offers to help get the kids in line.
I had such a great time reading this, the novella is full of hilarity and so much fun happenings surrounding the duckie shifter and his fated mate. The story is well written and the pacing was perfectly suited to the light and cute plot. While the romance is instalust, with novellas I always expect that to a certain degree. Despite their obvious chemistry and connection, I loved that Sig and Rachel didn't jump into anything immediately and focused on getting to know each other a little. I never take these wacky romances seriously and I suggest you go into them with no expectations and you may have some fun!

Thoughts:
Short summary - Rachel becomes guardian to her friend’s 3 children. The next door neighbor is a rubber duckie shifter.
From his POV there are so many duck puns and duck references and I found myself laughing at it. What’s the point in a book like this if you can’t laugh? Mia nailed it!
Laughter for the reader and some spice scenes? Good mix!
♡𝐞𝐀𝐫𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰♡ 4.5 🌟 - 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 : •romance •shifter (rubber duckie) •fated mates - This book took me by surprise because who thinks about writing a romance shifter book where the MMC turns into a rubber duckie? Clearly, this author Mia Harlan, but honestly, I am all here for this book! Enjoyed this book to the max. It's a novella with maybe 70 pages, but it doesn't leave you hanging for anything. Read it, read it. ♡𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 May.17♡ - Thank you, Netgalley, and Mia Books for the (eArc)-eBook for my honest review.
I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did???
Listen, a rubber duck shifter, we know it's going to be wild.
The writing was average, and wow was Rachel annoying at times (we get it, you miss cruises). But this was such a fun, short read that genuinely had be laughing out loud at parts. Was it silly? Yes. But I finished it will a smile on my face.
The premise of this book was unique - a shifter that shifts only into an object they love. Rachel was flighty, had low self esteem, and a lil bit silly. Sig was affable and obsessive about rubber ducks and Rachel — didn’t seem to have much of a personality beyond that. The book was cute enough and flowed well, but I was a little bit bored.
Spice: 3/5 - one scene
Triggers: death of friend (off page), death of parents (side characters, off page)
I’m giving this three stars because I think it accomplished what it set out to accomplish? It’s deeply Bonkers and I read it for the same reason I enjoy the Room. I am at my core trash. Should you read it? idk are you also trash? Then yes.
It's written ok but read a bit juvenile at times. I don't think these crazy romances are for me. Glad I tried it though and this was well paced. The author 100% set this up for a sequel so I expect this to become a series.
If this is your thing definitely give it a shot! Funny and light hearted
Thankyou to the Author and Netgalley for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review
Duck duck duckity duck! This book was so ducking fun! Mia Harlan delivered a fun and creative short read with this one, and even added a spicy little scene that wasn't too explicit.
Rachel is tasked with watching her three godchildren while their grandmother is on vacation. Things would be just fine if she didn't struggle with children. She has no idea what she is doing! Fortunately, the hot next-door neighbor, Sig, is around to help save the day. The only thing is he's a rubber duckie shifter! He's been doing a great job hiding it from everyone, but the more he starts falling for Rachel, the more he feels compelled to tell her the truth. Hopefully she won't duck out on him!
This book was so fun, I didn't want it to end! The author did an amazing job with the writing as well as with the pacing. I'm sure it can be challenging to incorporate so much into a 100-page short story but she nailed it! I laughed so hard every time a duck pun was made! And the spicy romance scene was perfect, with a bit of quirk added, of course! Absolutely loved and enjoyed this one so much!
Thank you NetGalley, Author Collective 20, and Mia Harlan for such a great ARC!
I would usually never go for a rubber duckie shifter romance, but I was curious when I saw this on NetGalley and my coworker and I laughed when we read the synopsis. I was not disappointed. Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door was actually a cute romance with some spicy scenes and great chemistry between the two main character. The hour it took me to read this flew by. It looks like there will be a sequel to this story and I will happily read it when it releases.
Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door comes out May 17th.
Thank you to NetGalley and Mia Books for the opportunity to review Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Alright, gotta be honest I was a tad nervous about this book because the vibes it was giving was a tad weird for me BUT it ended up being the cutest shifter book I’ve ever read with a good amount of spice to keep things interesting.
Our FMC is watching her former best friends (who passed away) kids while trying to prove she could be a good guardian to them. She’s failing EPICALLY. The neighbor next door steps in to offer assistance and falls instantly in love with her. So. Stinking. Cute.
I think I’m no longer calling guys Golden Retrievers, now they will be known as Rubber Duckies because this guy is changing things for me.
This is the perfect by the pool book for the summer. Grab a ducky float and get to reading and relaxing!
Some books are just fun. “Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door” fits perfectly into that description. One of my dear friends calls books like this one “bananapants” books. By definition they are more than a bit crazy, off the wall, you are going to laugh a lot while reading, ask yourself “what?” & “why?” more than a few times while reading, but most importantly being smiling when you’re are finished reading.
There are just days and situations that call for the endorphin release that bananapants romances deliver and this book will fit the bill for anyone needing the sexy fun of a hot neighbor who happens to be a rubber duck shifter that saves the day when you are in over your head with the 3 children you inherited from your best friend.
I can also recommend this book for the challenge reader crowd who is always looking for a unique read to mark off a square on a bingo card. Keywords: #waterpark #inanimateobjectshifter #hotnextdoorneighor #inheritedchildren #bathtub #fatedmate
All in all this is a very quick and fun read, that will provide a good laugh and discussion for any group of romance readers you are in. (My book club is already chattering about it and it isn’t even out yet, we are just got early access to the ARC).
3.5 Stars, rounding up to 4. Enjoy this summer and share with friends..
Holy duck! I love this book! It's a fun, light, hilarious romance with a mess of a woman and a duck of a man. These two are so cute together! There's a ton of good stuff: antagonistic children, fated mates, a sentient object shifter, and duck puns. I enjoyed all the ups and downs as the kids make waves for the female main character.
Rachel is the female main character and she really is a mess. She's in over her head trying to take care of her late friend's three children. She wants to be more involved in their lives and help raise them, but she needs to get her ducks in a row before she can be a "responsible adult."
Sig is the cutest, and not just because he's a rubber duckie shifter. He falls for her at first sight. His adoration of her and the way he helps with Lisa, Anna, and Noah (the stinkiest trio of ducklings ever) made my heart squeeze.
I also enjoyed this not being squeaky clean. There's some steamy bath time fun towards the end. Let's just say the children aren't the only ones getting dirty in this story.
Then there's the rubber duck water park! It sounds ducking awesome, and I would want to see it in real life. (I have my own collection of rubber duckies, but I could use another one or twelve.)
I'm so excited to see what is next from the Shifter Bay world!
This is my first read by Mia and I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting it to be as cute as what it was. Honestly, this read had me smiling all the way through.
I love the heroine in this so much. Rachel is a woman who is trying to learn the ropes of motherhood for the sake of the three cute kids that she is godmother to. She isn’t afraid to admit when she needs help, she’s very relatable and her inner dialogue is hilarious and heartfelt.
Sig is a magic shifter and he’s sweet, smart and sees the light in his mate (even when she doesn’t) - I love this guy so much! The way he adores Rachel made me swoon so hard.
This queen wrote this one of kind, super sweet, no angst/drama (except for the kiddos throwing a fit or two) and heartwarming romance that threw me for a loop. I am so happy I took a chance on reading this. It’s a cute little palette cleanser that made my heart grow and my knees weak - now I am fully invested in this series (can’t wait for Reaper’s story!) and will be checking out Mia’s other works.
Rounded up from 4.5 Rachel is struggling to prove she can be a good guardian for her friend's kids, so the neighbor, Sig, comes to the rescue! The connection is instantaneous, but little does she know that he can shift... The title says it all! If you're looking for something silly, light and riduckulous, this one is for you. It also felt a bit rushed, but at about 100 pages, you don't really have time to take your time. Lisa was annoying and the spice comes in much too late for a book this length and doesn't last very long. I was expecting something much spicier to be honest, so I was disappointed on that front, but I liked how quirky that was. Quick, unexpected and entertaining read! I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I got exactly what I expected from a story called “Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door”. This was 100 pages of fun and quality writing. The dual POV made things even better because reading what Sig was thinking about as a “duckie” was hilarious!
Despite being short, the story was well paced, with one pleasantly written sex scene that was not overly graphic. I especially liked that everyone was “human” when the intimate scenes were happening. I would definitely recommend this story to any adult who is looking for a quick (took me just over an hour) little romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Mia Books for letting me review this book! All opinions are my own.
Let's be real, you don't pick up a book called Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door and expect something completely normal or proper. :D This was an entertaining, funny, unique and quick novella to relax and read something a bit different!
Since it's a novella a little insta-connection is expected, however, I do genuinely think the MCs didn't act on their urges immediately and tried to get to know each other first. I was so surprised how despite this being a short, humorous read, it dealt with serious family relationships and dynamics and I loved that part. If you need a light, cute read that doesn't take itself too seriously give this a go. It gives you a break you need. Also, the cover is adorable!
This story was both tooth achingly sweet and toe curling hot!! I absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. Sig is an adorable and hot MMC! He's kind, patient, sweet and still take charge and protective. I loved Rachel as well. She's such a a relatable character in the way that she has no idea what she's doing. She becomes the guardian to 3 young children and is so lost. As a parent, completely relatable. We learn that we are hardest on ourselves and Rachel learns this lesson as well. This is a fated mates slow burn and it was so good!!! I devoured it! Even though Rachel isn't a shifter, she feels such an intense attraction to Sig. I loved everything about it!!
I can totally identify with Rachel, our FMC! Adulting is hard and I totally feel for her and what she’s going through with the kids! I love her cute meet! Sig is everything Rachel needs and I loved seeing how supportive he was even when they first met! This is a great read for those who need to take a pause from life and get sucked into something feel good. Our HEA is not only heartwarming, but such a heavy does of happy you’ll want to binge more of these shifter books! If you like spice, shifters, unique reads, happily ever afters, feeling happy, this is the book for you!
I had no idea what to expect from this book. Never even thought about a rubber duckie shifter before. It was cute and spicy all at the same time. Also, it is a quick read if you are looking for a palette cleanser.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review, giving my opinion about this book.*
This book by Mia Harlan is so cute. I love when she does books that involve different types of shifters from Shifter Bay. I first read one of her books thanks to the Jewels Cafe/Spell Library series. And I just enjoy her writing. I read this book in one sitting. Most of her books I can finish in a day because they just pull me right into the story.
This is definitely one of her fun books. Imagine being a rubber duckie shifter. It's wild to think about.
