Since I first read the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius in college, I have been attracted to, and occasionally utilized, some of the precepts of stoic philosophy. But as my life has progressed with its success and tragedies, I have come to realize that simply knowing a few of the precepts is not enough. To “bear the whips and scorns of time” one must develop the discipline of actually practicing this philosophy on a day-to-day basis. That is where this book comes in handy.
Riley Frost Lavender has provided a great service for those like me who have an idea of how to manage the ups and downs of life, but someone slip in pockets of anxiety, fear, and frustration. His book provides us with essential reminders of the keys of stoicism daily. Or, as Kipling wrote, the tools to “meet with triumph and disaster and treat these two imposters just the same.”
I have only just begun my journey with this book. It is not a text to sit and study but rather a daily companion to keep by the bedside and use for morning meditation (How will I walk in balance today?) and evening inventory (Did I manage to keep my equilibrium?).
I think that the great advantage of this collection of aphorisms, quotes, suggestions, and advice will be the gradual firming up if purpose, of discovering a power in oneself to find peace, clarity, and acceptance of life on life’s terms. With this one can overcome resentment, fear, resistance to change, and all the other life events that disturb. For me I also hold out that it will also allow me to accept my good fortune when it comes, with grace and humility, knowing that like all good things, it is temporary.
I love the stoics, there insight into how to have a better life is unparalleled. This book picks some of the all time greatest and their quotes. This is gem A+
