And then there's Owen Shannahan—a sailor with amnesia who literally washes ashore, bringing a glimmer of hope and a spark of romance. Their growing connection is warm, genuine, and as steady as a lighthouse beam in the fog.
Mathis crafts characters who are like beacons themselves. Libby’s journey of personal growth and Owen’s search for his past are so beautifully handled that you find yourself enthusiastically rooting for them. Their growing relationship is sweet and demonstrates the power of love, faith, and a little soul-searching. And that lighthouse? It’s not just sitting in the background—it pulses with life, a beacon of guidance and hope that echoes the story’s core themes of faith and forgiveness. Mathis nails it when she writes: “Let us never forget to thank God – and others – for the simple joys of life and the people who share them with us.”
The writing here really sparkles, especially with all the descriptive detail that brings the lighthouse and its surroundings to life and the emotional depth of the characters. You can practically hear the waves crashing and feel the sea breeze. Mathis weaves historical detail and Christian values together like a pro, making the story hit home on multiple levels. The sentiment, “A grateful heart turns the ordinary into extraordinary,” threads through the narrative, reflecting themes of forgiveness, faith, and hope as Libby and Owen face their trials.
Libby's Lighthouse is a heartwarming read that checks all the boxes—romance, mystery, historical depth, and a strong faith element. It’s a beautifully crafted story that captures the essence of love, redemption, and resilience. As the first book in Mathis’s Lighthouse series, it sets the bar high and will surely win over fans of Christian fiction and historical romance. This novel is proof that love and faith can light the way, even in the darkest times.
I received a digital copy of Libby’s Lighthouse from the author and Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. Libby's Lighthouse was a wonderful, quick read with just the best aesthetic! I loved everything from the sweet, clean romance to the messages about the importance of family!
Libby struggles to understand her identity after a deathbed confession from her mother. She still does her best to help her family and care for Owen, the sailor who washed up near her family's lighthouse. I love how Libby does her best to keep her head high in spite of the challenges she is faced with. She is also such a sweet person and kind to everyone. Basically, she's the type of person I hope I can be!
Owen has completely forgotten who he is. He wants to understand where he came from, so he can decide where to go from there. I love how hard of a worker he is and how he is so honorable. I also love the scenes where he plays with Libby's nephew! It's so cute!!!
As I mentioned earlier, the AESTHETIC of this book was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! The book felt so calming and peaceful and just made this book such a relaxing read. I also love how Susan used the symbolism of lighthouses throughout her book!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If you are a fan of sweet, clean romances that are perfect for rainy days, I would highly recommend Libby's Lighthouse by Susan G. Mathis!
I received an advance copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. My opinions are my own.
Fantastic characters that I grew to love. A lighthouse and mysterious man makes for a wonderful plot. The romance is so sweet, with the unknown of who he is and what he left behind drawls you into then story. I found myself on the edge of my seat as secrets unfold, and the circumstances that come from it. As Libby matures she develops into a headstrong woman who knows what she wants and develops strength from it. A beautiful story of romance and love that knows no bounds. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Libby's Lighthouse is a well-written story of hope, dreams, and love. Libby and Owen's surprise encounter due to injuries sustained, and Libby caring for him, led to the discovery that both of them had hidden secrets.
A sweet romance with uncertainty, secrets, and mystery will keep you turning the pages. I couldn't put it down. The historical aspect with details of the lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers' job, brought the story to life. I also loved the show of faith the family, and especially the main characters show. Everything wrapped up nicely in the end and I highly recommend the book.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
This was the first novel by this author for me, but I wasn’t disappointed. The story was very detailed in the history of lighthouses, their procedures, and the vital role they played in navigating the rivers and lakes between America and Canada. The author’s vivid word pictures of the landscapes made me feel like I could see, feel, and smell the world Owen and Libby were living.
The writing style was easy to read and moved along nicely. The mysterious past of both Owen and Libby added depth to the story as they uncovered or remembered the secrets that were hidden or forgotten.
Owen and Libby’s romance slowly grew from Christian care for a stranger in need, to friendship, and then to affection from the heart.
I enjoyed the novel and would revisit it. I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
I don’t know what it is about stories with lighthouses, but for some reason I’m so intrigued by them, as well as the unique lifestyle of a lighthouse keeper. “Libby’s Lighthouse” is a mesmerizing and emotional read. Libby and Owen are interesting characters and are easy to connect with. (I especially enjoyed witnessing Libby’s growth). And the descriptions of the lighthouse and its surroundings is palpable.
The secrets and mysteries are captivating, believable, and complex. With themes of faith and forgiveness shining through, the growing romance is sweet and satisfying. I’m happy there will be more stories in this new series.
First Line: Libby Montonna sipped her lukewarm tea as she perused the ever-enchanting view atop the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse. Series: Love at a Lighthouse, book 1 Genre: Christian Historical Romance Author: Susan G. Mathis Page Count: 224

Libby's Lighthouse, the first book in the Love at a Lighthouse series by Susan G Mathis is a wonderful inspirational story. Involving secrets along with amnesia, Owen and Libby are struggling with identity issues. However, this book has a strong faith base so finding their worth in God’s plan is at its heart.
The setting is vividly and beautifully described. The lighthouse is just a joy to read about in it descriptions, usage, and Godly images. The characters are also a joy to get to know in this story. I was rather surprised by the conclusion of Libby’s and Owen’s future but loved that no one is out of God’s reach. What a lovely story. I can hardly wait for the next lighthouse historical fiction story in this series by Susan G Mathis. 4.5 Stars
A sweet romance perfect for summer reading or anytime you want an escape from the everyday pressures of life. The secrets Libby and Owen carry offer conflicting emotions that kept me turning pages. Also intriguing is the setting for the lighthouse with such beautiful descriptions, I want to go where the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario meet.
A beautifully written story! So many unknowns and I couldn’t put it down, because I wanted to find out what happened next. I NEEDED the answers just as much as Libby and Owen. I loved seeing the characters’ turn to God and their faith grow throughout the story. I highly recommend this book, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
**I received a copy of this book from the author for review. I was not required to write a positive review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a wonderful book! I love the imagery that the author paints, especially of the sunrise! (and the cinnamon buns!) This heartfelt tale brings together two young people who are dealing with storms in their lives.
The characters are relatable and easy to like. Libby's mother revealed to her a life changing secret on her deathbed. As she struggles to deal with the new information, Owen washes up on shore. Owen is mysterious for many reasons but the most important one is that he has amnesia. As their relationship progresses and Owen finds out about his "real" life, they each have questions and doubts. Their faith in God leads them on the right path.
I'm really enjoying these books by Susan Mathis! Her characters touch my heart and the story always teaches me something. It's encouraging to me that her characters have faith in God; that doesn't mean their lives are perfect and without trial but they lean on their faith and trust God with their futures.
Libby's life has been upturned by learning a secret her mother reveals before she dies. Devastated by her parents' deception, Libby wonders if she can ever trust her father again and fears the truth will make her a social outcast. Though badly battered and bruised in a shipwreck, Owen is still alive when Libby finds him onshore. But as Libby nurses him back to health, they discover Owen has amnesia. Now he questions what lies in his past that he'd rather forget. It will take love and forgiveness for both of them to recover what they've lost.
The story takes place in the beautiful setting of Cape Vincent, New York at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario at the end of the Gilded Age. The reader immediately feels drawn to the main characters' and roots for both of them to find their way through faith and courage to face their fears. I highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed the writing style. Added an old world charm to the story. Really enjoyed how Owen and Libby had similar interests and passions. The overhanging questions added to the interest of the story. Some horrid behaviour from some characters added depth too. The ending was extremely satisfying. If you like old world charm, caring family and issues that make the characters grow, then you would enjoy this. Has a lot of poetry too.
My love of lighthouses drew me to this title. Throw in a beautiful setting, a hero with amnesia, family secrets, and drama and I was hooked! Libby Montanna’s world is turned upside down from her mother’s deathbed confession. A stranger named Owen washed up on shore injured after a storm. How these two individuals came to find answers to their pasts and hope for the future made for an engaging and heartwarming read. This inspirational first novel in a new series was full of forgiveness, faith, and second chances and highlighted the good that can happen when people let go of bitterness and seek forgiveness and reconciliation. I love learning about places new to me and the delightful setting for this story has whet my appetite for the other books in the series which will take place at different lighthouses. Beautiful story!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and these are my honest opinions.
“Mama had betrayed her. Kept the essence of who Libby was from her all her life.”
Twenty-year-old Libby Montanna lives in the lightkeeper’s cottage with her lightkeeper father, brother, and his family. Libby loves helping her father in his duties at the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse on the St. Lawrence River in New York, very close to Canada.
When Libby finds a shipwrecked man with amnesia, he is brought to the keeper’s cottage to recuperate. Owen is frustrated by his inability to remember who he is and his past, while Libby is frustrated by her mother’s secret that knocks her mooring out from beneath her. As they both uncover more of their pasts, will they be brought together or torn apart?
I appreciated Libby’s father’s wisdom many times. He tells Owen, “Every person has a wound. Some you can see. Others are hidden deep in the recesses of one’s heart or mind. Only hope and love can bring it out into the light where it can be healed. And more than not, a lot of patience.”
I was as unhappy as Libby with the family’s distrust of Owen as he recovers. Perhaps they felt she was assuaging her grief over her mother’s passing by spending so much time with Owen.
It seemed to me that a lot of hurt could have been avoided in Libby’s case if her parents had been honest with her early in life. Even later, Libby’s father keeps a secret that adds to the tension among the small family group.
Forgiveness is certainly a theme in the book. I would enjoy discussing this book with a book club, because it brings up questions about forgiveness and other issues illuminated in the novel.
I enjoyed the romance, and I always like the amnesia trope. I also enjoyed seeing a glimpse of a character we saw in a previous book and a referenced event I remembered. Fun!
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotable:
“The simple act of blessing others with words of thanksgiving can change a person’s life.”
“…the past is a lighthouse, not a port. I suppose we all must choose to move beyond our past and not get stuck there.”
Love is what makes us feel fully alive, so when someone we love departs, we tend to question our own existence.”
I signed up for the book tour because the setting intrigued me. I love lighthouses and learning how they operated and their history. So reading a book set in a lighthouse in the late 17th century? Yes, please! And I’ll be honest, the setting itself did not disappoint. I loved how the author painted the picture of Lake Ontario and the lighthouse, as well as how she sprinkled some facts here and there throughout the story.
However, I had a hard time connecting with the characters and the story. It wasn’t until more than halfway through the book that I got into it. I felt that the characters didn’t really have much depth, and the romance itself moved way too quickly for me–I definitely expected it to be more of a slow-burn romance. I also felt that Libby’s family was fully justified for her not wanting to get too close to Owen, especially since he didn’t know who he was or whether or not he was already married or some sort of criminal.
I liked the idea of Libby finding out a long-buried secret from her mother. It was what kept the plot going for the first half of the novel. But the reveal itself was somewhat predictable for me, and I was somewhat disappointed. However, I did enjoy the themes of finding belonging and identity.
Even though this book wasn’t my cup of tea, it still had good, strong elements to it that make it promising. And if you’re someone who likes clean historical romance with an amnesia trope, I’d recommend this book.
I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.
This story has been filled with many tears shed from me as I walked beside Libby. Her adventure begins with a simple life as she helps the family with the lighthouse. I loved learning how a lighthouse is a beacon of light for those who are lost. I started collecting lighthouses a long time ago. Each one is a treasure and it brings hope to me in my daily life.
I could go on and on about the characters because they brought me to a place where forgiveness was illustrated so beautifully. When I found out the secret Libby had been keeping, I wanted to give her a hug and remind her that “God has a plan for her life.” Her sweet spirit was evident as she encountered trials that strengthened her.
This story is not only about a beautiful relationship between Libby and Owen but reconciliation between strained family members. Throughout the story a beautiful thread of faith was in every scene. Owen became such a great character as he finds his way to remembering his past. I love that he didn’t show bitterness towards his father but reached out to him with honor and unconditional love.
I recommend this story to everyone who wants to experience what true forgiveness means and how the past can be healing. The author leaves me with a hunger to walk in compassion and truth everyday.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Christian Historical Romance books are a favorite genre of mine. Libby's Lighthouse by Susan G. Mathis is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Love at a Lighthouse series.
I truly enjoyed this book from the very beginning. First of all, I LOVE Lighthouses, so that part of the storyline really intrigued me. Elizabeth Montonna, better known as Libby, has been trying to find her place in life since her mom revealed a family secret on her death bed. Libby's Father is the Lighthouse Keeper on the shores of Lake Ontario. Libby believes she might have found her purpose when a sailor appears wounded and needing help. Libby and her Dad begin to help the young sailor, who appears to have amnesia, recover. The young sailor, who reveals his name as Owen, is grateful for the help from Libby and her father. Owen and Libby are falling for one another, but Owen also has secrets from his past. I really LOVE the Historical facts throughout the book about Lighthouses. The romance between Owen and Libby faced struggles as they both had "baggage" to reveal. I do LOVE that they both rely on their faith in God to help them reveal truths. The book is one of history, Faith, LOVE, and Family, I am so excited for this series and I am looking forward to reading the entire series. GREAT BOOK!
Libby’s Lighthouse is a sweet historical fiction novel with some love and suspense thrown in as well. You’ll love this new start to a series.
Oh, to see a lighthouse! I cannot wait to go see one someday. I’m a huge fan. They’re one of my favorite things to read about. The history of them. The life they would have lived. I’m sure I romanticize them a bit or a lot, but they’re so fun!
This was an amazing book. You’ve got some mystery. And you’ve got some suspense thrown in too. Oh and of course a guy with amnesia. The lighthouse keeper’s daughter finds the soldier with amnesia and learns some secrets. She also has some secrets of her own shared with her from her mother.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. And I’m very happy to see that it’s the first in a series of at least three planned books. I will definitely be grabbing copies of the other two novels as well. Here’s hoping some of these characters pop back in and make appearances in the other books.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Libby is the lightkeeper's daughter and she shares her home with the family she loves so very much. Unfortunately, her mother on her death bed shared a devastating secret to Libby. One that has Libby questioning who she is and coloring her past, present, and future with plenty of unknowns. She knows one thing for sure, she loves the lighthouse and working with her Papa and brother.
Lighthouses were built to save people and on one such day Libby finds an injured man. Owen is his name. At least he can remember his first name even if he cannot remember anything else about himself. As Owen heals, he struggles with his memory and when it will come back, he is also falling in love with Libby. Is he even free to do that?
This was a sweet romance of learning who you are, not letting your past define you and embracing the future with all the hope that you can. All of this takes place against the backdrop of the lighthouse that stands strong even in the worst of storms. Symbolic I think for the familial love in this story.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
Libby’s Lighthouse is written by Susan G Mathis. This is the first book in the Love at a Lighthouse series. One of the things that I love about this author is her ability to transport readers back in time. She always brings history to life through her writing.
Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse is tended to by the Montonna family. Elizabeth is the daughter of the keeper. She is content to keep up with the lighthouse. However her world is changed when her mother reveals a deathbed secret. Suddenly Elizabeth is unsure about her future. Owen is a sailor that shows us injured and disoriented. He doesn’t know what happened, where his ship is or anything from his past. He and Libby grow closer as he recovers. However he is worried about his past. He doesn’t feel fine with moving forward without the missing puzzle pieces.
The author has done careful research to bring this story to life. I learned a lot about the upkeep and day to day running of a lighthouse. Libby grows and evolves through out the story. The characters are well written. The storyline is a historic mystery that will draw readers in within the first few pages.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Libby’s Lighthouse by Susan G. Mathis is a Christian Historical Romance. A lighthouse keeper, Elizabeth Montonna, known as Libby, finds a stranger injured and suffering from amnesia. Still reeling from her mother sharing a secret on her deathbed, Libby struggles to figure out her place.
Owen awakes on the shore of Lake Ontario with no memory of who he is or where he was headed before his shipwrecked. He relies on Libby and her family’s generosity, kindness, and hospitality.
As the author fills the pages of this book with the characters’ development, I found myself unable to put it down. I had to find out how the story would end. This book illustrated faith, hope, love, forgiveness, and more. I appreciated how the author allowed multiple secrets to be revealed in their time.
So, if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Libby’s Lighthouse by Susan G. Mathis. I recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This is a sweet story with such vivid imagery by the author! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I've always had an affinity for lighthouses and have visited several on the East Coast in my travels. How fascinating it was to learn about their function in more detail and in the area between America and Canada in the late 1800's. The author also used a lot of beautiful imagery in describing nature that made me feel as if I were right there experiencing the world along with Libby and her family or the mysterious stranger they find on the beach. This stranger and his identity are the focus of story. He has amnesia and takes refuge at the lighthouse until he can remember who he is so Libby, in particular, tries to help him recover his memory. I enjoyed the journey! Libby has things to discover about herself also, so the story is full of unveilings. The faith element was strong throughout the book but not overwhelming. I look forward to the next book in the series!
I have read many of Susan G. Mathis’s books and I enjoy her writing style. Libby’s Lighthouse was another enjoyable Mathis book for me. I am also fascinated by the lifestyle of the old lighthouse keepers and their families so I was very interested in reading this book. The story includes historical information about the keeping of the lights, as well as information about the keepers and their families. The story also involves a couple of mysteries - who is the shipwreck victim who washes up on their shore and discovers he has amnesia and who really is Libby, it seems she isn’t who she thought she was her entire life. Mathis masterfully wove these mysteries together with the historical information to create a “can’t put it down” story. While Libby’s Lighthouse is an adult historical novel, it could find its way into a K-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for high schoolers. I received a complimentary copy of Libby’s Lighthouse. This is my honest review.
To all the days here and after — may they be filled with fond memories, happiness and laughter. - Irish blessing
The author has done a fabulous job of making you feel like you are right there as part of the story. The sunrises, sunsets were beautiful and the many rich details about the lighthouse brought you right to the top, helping keep everything bright and shiny.
Many fond memories of growing up were brought to a halt when Libby learned something she had never known about. Would she be able to forgive and once again have hope and see the light?
An ARC of Love at a Lighthouse Book One was received through WildHeart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
This is such a sweet love story. It is a story of forgiveness and love and trust. I had to keep reading and turning the pages before I had to know the secret that Libby knew. I really liked the preacher's sermon on page 154. This is a story of characters learning to be who God wanted them to be. I think This story touched me so much because it deals with adoption and my four grandsons are adopted. If a reader likes clean romance and surprises that are something good for characters in the story than I recommend reading "Libby's Lighthouse" by Susan G. Mathis. This book has wonderful advice about marriage.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrated Lit and these opinions are my own.
I liked this story and the characters. I liked how Libby and Owen had to deal with things from their past in order to move forward and to be able to have a future. I liked how they had to discover who they were and not let the things from the past define them. I also liked how they learned to forgive and to notice God’s guiding hand. I liked how their romance started off with them being friends and growing into more as they spent time together and helped each other work through their concerns. I thought the story was well written and would recommend it.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This new to me author did not disappoint in this Christian Historical Romance. The research of the working of a lighthouse and the keeper’s job is well woven into the beautiful tale of Elizabeth and Owen. Their unusual meeting with his amnesia and injuries kept the pages turning as their lives were shared with each other and their inner heart desires. Themes of hope, faith, finding peace about their lives, forgiveness and a never failing God made this an endearing read.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit Bloggers book tour and the publisher without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own thoughts.
Libby’s Lighthouse by Susan G. Mathis is a wonderfully written Christian historical romance. This is the first book in the Love at a Lighthouse series. This is an enjoyable story to read and get lost in. I admire the relationship Elizabeth has with her family and how helpful and dedicated she is working at the lighthouse. I feel for Elizabeth as she struggles with new found information about her past. She and Owen share that aspect as he finds out who he really is after struggling with amnesia. It’s heartwarming to see how they decide what is right for their future.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story, this is my honest review.
Libby's Lighthouse is my first introduction to author Susan G. Mathis. I loved the way Susan interwove fun facts about the lighthouse and what it's like to be a lighthouse keeper. Having heavily researched this topic, it was a pleasure to see the way the author incorporated it into the story.
This is a sweet romance with faith at the forefront. It's a book you won't be able to put down. I highly recommend it.
~While I was given this book for free, I was under no obligation to provide a favorable review. (2024)
I enjoy author Susan Mathis’ style of writing; rather old school and charming. While her books are interesting I can also relax while reading them.
In Libby’s Lighthouse we learn a bit about the lighthouse keepers of old. How they lived and worked. How necessary they were. The characters had depth; not all of them were nice and sweet. There were honest to life personalities.Secrets, hope, and sweet romance make this a delight to read. I recommend it if you enjoy historical fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
