A magical artifact. A princess from another time. And a flawed soldier on the hunt for his destiny.
The year is 2016, and veteran James “Mack” MacNaughton struggles with a life-threatening medical condition and the ghosts of war. But when he crosses paths with Toey – a beautiful Cherokee Native woman with an enigmatic heart-shaped ruby – he’s plunged into a life-changing mystery that could rewrite history. After Toey disappears deep in the mountains of North Carolina, Mack stumbles upon a shocking secret: Toey is a princess from the 1700s, and her ruby is an ancient Viking treasure with a supernatural power... and an origin that challenges everything we know about our past. Her treasure is the only thing that can cure his illness. But Mack isn’t the only one who wants it. Caught up in an international manhunt that paints a target on his back, Mack must go toe-to-toe with Mother Nature’s elements, bloodthirsty mountain outlaws, and the mistakes of his past to locate Toey and unravel the mystery of her ruby. Can Mack fulfill his destiny and find the woman he loves? Or will he be swallowed up and lost to the sands of time?
note to readers: an earlier version of this book was published as The Cherokee Secret in 2021.
Edward Hendry is an American author, entrepreneur, and veteran with a deep passion for writing stories about adventure and faith. His books blend historical fiction, mystery and suspense with supernatural themes to take readers on a journey into the diverse challenges of life, love, and destiny.
Edward is an avid outdoor enthusiast. When he’s not writing books by the sea, you can often find him hiking a backcountry trail deep in the mountains. His motto for life is “We all have two lives. The second one begins the moment you realize you only have one.”
Edward Hendry's Fallen: Quest for the Sacred Stone is a fascinating mystery from the first page. Edward Hendry pulls the reader into a multi-dimensional puzzle that can’t be put down. James MacNaughton, “Jimmy-Mack”, is haunted by the image of a beautiful woman. She has come to him three different times in his life, always when his life was in danger. At the request of his mentor, John Ballow, and the need to redefine the course of his life, Mack goes on a quest to find the lady in his visions. Is she a figment of his near-death hallucinations, or is she linked to a much deeper secret? His discoveries uncover a well-kept secret from centuries ago that could rewrite history books. The intrigue and subterfuge stretch across the ocean and back, and Jimmy-Mack doesn’t know that his choices have led to dominoes falling all around him until they land at his feet. I enjoyed the book. I live in Northeast Tennessee, so it felt like a lot of the story was unfolding in my backyard. The Appalachian Trail and the mountains of Western North Carolina are a short drive from my house, so I could visualize the scenery as Jimmy-Mack made his discoveries. The shift between settings and characters was seamless, and multiple points of view gave strength to the story.
This is a present-day suspense tale about a very old prophecy.
The gravestone of an heir to the 1500's Spanish throne has been found in . . . North Carolina. What was he doing there? He was searching for the Corazon del Rey, a star-shaped stone of great power that is said to be from Somewhere Else. The bearer of the stone has the ability to travel through time. The bearer also has the right to assume the Spanish throne, pushing out the present occupant. A secret office inside the Spanish monarchy is Very Interested. They want a chance to impose a conservative, ultra-religious regime, getting rid of all that liberal socialism.
Meantime, James "Mack" MacNaughton grew up in a very rural part of North Carolina. Three times in his life he was about to die, and each time he was rescued by a woman who suddenly appeared to him and basically said "It's not your time." He has been given the task of finding a Native American named Bill Walkingstick, who will tell him a story that will shock him (there is a lot that Mack has not yet been told about what's going on). The area around the Appalachian Trail is home to lots of marijuana plants, grown right on federal land. In his travels through North Carolina, Mack also finds a solid-gold, jewel-encrusted cross, which happens to be part of the Spanish Crown Jewels. Is the Corazon del Rey ever found? Who gets to it first? Who is still alive at the end?
The author does a very good job throughout the book. It's got suspense and violence, and it's got a bit of ancient history and conspiracy. This novel is very much worth reading.
This novel was so amazing and full of adventure with lots of secrets. Mack was on a journey of lifetime. He was in search for answers to a mystery that had plagued him for years. Along his journey he finds himself learning about things in his past that he never knew. It is fasted paced and you’ll need to hold on because it’s a bumpy ride. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to read book 2.
This novel weaves a compelling narrative of second chances, redemption, and the discovery of a mysterious love. Seamlessly blending the landscapes of North Carolina with the rich historical tapestry of Spain, it offers a captivating journey that has me eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.
DNF- Why do Christian authors feel the need to swear in their books? Your audience is Christian, most of us specifically choose Christian fiction to get away from the filth of secular fiction. If you want to include swearing, please don’t list your book as Christian fiction, it is very frustrating for those of us who choose that genre for a clean read.
I read this book in just a couple of days. I didn’t want to put it down but for my responsibilities. The writing, the characters all of it is great. I can’t wait to read the next book. Thank you for a good Christian book, Mr. Hendry!
