The revelations Mark Tudor unearthed on Tactus Ares were profound.
The Piraxians fell victim to the aggressive, expansionist Eridani Federation.
That same confederacy funded and facilitated the Lyrae. They made Stillness. And the Guild was complicit.
But how does one bring exposure to something the galaxy at large would rather forget? And how does an honorable man remove corruption when it's gravity consumes all?
A plan is hatched in secret. Bold. Definitive. But Mark and his cohorts have suffered with one potentially fatal misgiving—that their enemy, the imperialist Gyl-Mareth, wasn't plotting against them at the same time.
The tables always turn when it is least expected. And Mark Tudor may lose more than just his best friend, but his love, and potential legacy. Gyl-Mareth springs his trap. The Guild's reformation is struck a fatal blow. And yet, a landslide can begin with a single loose rock.
In the desperate hours, with hope fading, Mark Tudor will become that rock.
SHADOWS OF JUSTICE (PEACEMAKER WARS BOOK 5) by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert is definitely another great addition to the series, which will be one of those that will become to be known as one of the best ever written. It's full of action, it's suspenseful and intriguing, and the vast characters are very developed.
Check out their Backyard Starship Wiki, which lists the cast of characters, descriptions of alien races, sci-fi terms, and character art for both THE PEACEMAKER WARand their BACKYARD STARSHIP series online.
If you're into science fiction, action, good versus evil, where the heroes are up against villains that seem to be around every corner, this book and series is for you. You will find yourself routing for Mark, Perry, Netty, Valint, Tan and the rest of the good guys that are trying to restore peace to the known galaxy from those who are out to enslave and murder those that stand in their way to gain power and control of the galaxy.
A few quotes by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert from their SHADOWS of JUSTICE book I thought was worth sharing: "If you can't camp during nature's worst, then you don't deserve it's best."
"Tyrants only look imposing because they're busy standing on the back of those they view as lesser-than."
"This is textbook fascism. Control the news, steer the media, and thus control the whims of the people."
"He's is an unrivaled a-hole in possession of enough hot air to melt Antarctica."
"There is no greater cost to be paid than in the pursuit of truth."
Excellent writing and a great story. Numerous plot twists and some surprising losses. Looking forward to the next part of the story. I recommend highly!
Well, let me start with the fact that I love Maggert and Chaney collaborations. Love this series but wanted to scream at the way they left this book. Not fair, you guys should be arrested for torturing your readers. Holy hell, how am I supposed to wait for the next book.
Well this author can tell a story. I can't wait to get to the next book In this side series! I have been literally on the edge of my seat reading this.
Another great book by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride. and the ending was so Hard to take. Just when you think you figured out where Mark's going he take a sudden left turn on you. Keep them coming guys your work is awesome!
Movements behind the scenes threaten everything....
Mark finds out that people want to essentially sweep things under the rug and so their findings will not see the light of day. Perry's damage is becoming increasingly obvious and desperate measures may be required to save him. There is a moment of relaxation but then new plans are made which will ultimately decide the fate of the universe dependent on finding a retired master to overthrow the current regime. Also a new player is identified and a friend betrays with devastating consequences. The endgame is in sight, but things may not completely as they seem..... There is the usual mix of lighthearted moments followed by gut wrenching suspense, full of betrayal and death, along with some romance, and much planning and fighting. At the end, things seem to be on track but an incomplete revelation may signal problems ahead.
The struggle is growing against Mark, Val & their fellow Peacemakers. They find themselves nearly cornered by various agents of either the corrupt Gyl-Mareth, the Peacemakers who are fooled by his propaganda (or are themselves corrupt) and including the declared terrorists & criminals. They discover that many of all groups are willing to shoot on sight or even set up ambushes to harm their friends. Instead of reducing the criminality & violence, they are willing to take extreme measures to silence the honest people with no compunctions about the innocent beings they kill while doing so. Mark is growing increasingly disgusted by the political machinations and worse by their supposed allies. But he’s forced to hold his nose against the stench anyway.
This is a wonderful story with characters deserving their shared loyalty and the love of readers. It's full of adventure and close calls, injuries, and ultimate sacrifice. Characters grow through shared experiences into an unstoppable team. If anyone can save the Peacemakers and the galaxy it's them. Read it, you'll love it.
Great read, wonderful pace, humour as always. Only given it 4 stars because I think here are too many story arcs which whizz in and then out far too quickly. How the one at the end spins out obviously remains to be seen but it looks like massive one towards the end then stamped on.
I may be wrong about this one but there are others.
The Peacemaker Wars series is good, but I am not loving it as much as the Backyard Starship series. I do like seeing the origins of several characters, and I am REALLY intrigued to figure out where some of them end up. Overall, the books tend to skew a little darker and more desperate, but I enjoy the writing, world building, and adventure that Chaney and Maggert cook up in this series.
This was hard to get through simply because I didn't have the time to give to it that I'd like. But it was still a good continuation of the story. Some serious things happen to key characters. Mark has to take on a lot - but things end on a precipice and it'll be hard to wait for the next audiobook.
And Tom Taylorson is his usual fabulous self on audio.
This is the big one. There are so many backward steps on Mark's journey that started so long ago. This book includes the fight in which friends are badly injured and even lost, and new allies are made. And the cliffhanger is whether all is what it seems - no change there then. Gyl-Mareth is closing the circle on Mark and his ever reducing army.
Straight into the final book...

Another fine tale by Chaney and Maggert. Well written, with reasonable characters, lots of development mixed with a generous ration of suspense. A lot of this series depends on wild imagination, but they make it sound so normal and real!
I'm enjoying this series. I have about three series going at any one time and it's nice to switch up between books. I look forward to Peacemaker Wars' series next book. I've read more than one of Chaney's offerings and enjoy the author's style. Cheers!
The saga continues. Mark, Perry, and the rest of the crew resurrect an old ship from the Junkway and are attacked during the process. Things go downhill from there. A great story.
I'm actually liking this series more than the original and it's about to come to an end. There's a good amount of character development, probably because the series is mostly focused on Mark and not a gaggle of aliens and subplots upon subplots upon subplots.
Oh... My... Please please... I need the next book in this series. There goes my sleep today. Gonna think about what have I read and what could happen next.
Very slow start and crawled upto half way before things started to come together. Finale was also a piece of work leading to the next book with many options left hanging.
This book was still a good read despite all the adversity that Mark and his friends are facing. Hopfully Mark will overcome the adversity and triumph in the end!
I loved the series it gives great insight into the backyard spaceship. I love the interaction of Perry and Mark. It helps define how things might work.
