“Patch online…”

Five years ago, I disappeared from the life I had and built this one. I spend my days, and most of my nights, on the line helping my clients achieve their goals. They call me when they are in a jam or are getting ready to move on a target.

I’m their information specialist.

The woman in the chair.

I’m their switchboard.

Intelligence, electronic eyes, computer hacking—I do it all. My singular goal, bring my clients home safely. Some clients are more special than others. We all play favorites. I know them, they’ve never seen me.

No one sees me.

They can hear me. They can talk to me.

I will always answer.

Until the day I don’t.

TALK TO ME is book 1 of 2 in a DUET and is a full length dark thriller romance with multiple love interests and a heroine they love but have never seen. This is also a reverse harem novel, meaning the main female character does not have to choose. Of course, it also means the guys have to agree and well, that's part of the journey. The author encourages you to always read the forewords in her books for more information.

I love books. Not just a little bit, but a lot. Books were my best friends when I was growing up. Books didn’t care if I was new to a town or to a class. They were always there, my trustiest of companions. Until they turned on me and said I had to write them.

I can tell you that my own personal happily ever after included writing books. I’ve always said that an HEA is a work in progress. It’s true in my marriage, my friendships, and in my career. I am constantly nurturing my muse as we dive into new tales, new tropes, new characters and more.

After seventeen years back in Texas, we relocated to the Pacific Northwest in search of seasons, new experiences, and new geography. I can’t wait to discover what life (and my muse) have in store for me.

Maybe writing was always my destiny and romance my fate. After all, my grandmother wasn’t a fan of picture books and used to read me her Harlequin Romance novels.

Friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, friends to enemies to lovers, you name it, I love them and love to write them. I started with Earth Witches Aren’t Easy, the first in the Chance Monroe trilogy, but my characters and I have traveled a long way since I created that urban fantasy world.

One of the series I hear my readers recommend the most is the Untouchable series followed in quick succession by the Vandals, and that just delights me. No lie, whenever one of my readers brings up my wolves, I do a little a fist pump.

I’m active on social media, and I love hearing from readers. Feel free to tag me with a question about any of my books, or just say hi!

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ — 3,5/5 🖤🧸

This book offers a well-structured setup, balancing tension, challenges, and subtle connections 😮‍💨. The story moves at a measured pace, letting the FMC and the three MMCs take shape naturally 👀. While the romantic elements are still minimal, the plot lays a solid foundation for future developments 💫.

Characters:
FMC – Patch: Clever, resilient, and determined 💪✨. Her journey and early interactions with the MMCs provide a clear sense of her character.
MMC1 – Michael Remington: Calm, protective, and steady 🛡️. Hints at bonds that may deepen in later parts.
MMC2 – Justus “Locke”: Sharp, strategic, and observant 🧠. Subtle gestures suggest connections yet to come.
MMC3 – John McQuade: Strong, intense, and guarded 💥. Occasional glimpses of warmth add depth to his dynamic with the FMC.

A solid, structured introduction. Not a full romantic payoff yet, but the suspense, character depth, and early interactions make it clear that the story is ready to expand in the next part ✨

This story centers around a woman known only as Patch. She is an underground switchboard operator for clients in dire situations.

An array of fourteen monitors rippled to life as I settled in my chair. I entered the code for the VOIP and verified all firewalls were active before I hit answer.

There is an intricate weaving of intelligence, electronic surveillance, and computer hacking as Patch/Fallon, navigates to keep her clients alive. Despite never having seen her, three of her clients form a deep connection with her.

One day, she is unreachable. They know this means something is wrong, and set out to find her.

In their own ways, they were all predators. Apex predators in their particular fields. While they were extremely dangerous, they were also incredibly gentle with me.

Action packed
Reverse harem (but not in this book)
Former military
Captivity/torture
Multi pov
Cliffhanger

For all of you romance lovers, I will warn you there is no sex in this book, but there are some kisses. Somehow this wasn’t bothersome, as McQuade, Locke, and Remington work together to keep her safe and help her heal after her ordeal.

The torture was mostly kept very vague, which is both a relief and also frustrating. What exactly is she recovering from?

TWs: Mentions of SA. Kidnapping. Intimidation. Torture. Interrogation. Car accidents. Threats of violence. Scenes of combat. Violence.

The writing was done well and the overall idea of this Duology was intriguing. To oversimplify my concerns/thoughts; I gave this book 2 stars because it was filled with unrealistic portrayals of trauma, improbable plot lines, multiple time jumps and almost no romance.

Why I gave it 2 stars (very mild spoilers ahead):

-The overall story was so slow and I found myself bored towards the end. The set up was great, I love the female tech genius trope merged with the secret organization/spy trope but everything and everyone was kept separate for too much of the book.

- There were multiple time jumps which I cannot stand and find to be lazy writing.

-For a RH there was little to almost no romance in this book. To be completely fair the author warns of this in the foreword which I really appreciated. I was expecting it and have no problem with a slow burn but I was hoping for more flirting than there was and felt it was almost no burn. Possible romantic feelings were hinted at and each guy stole a short kiss eventually. That was it. Nothing was commented on or discussed. The FMC hasn’t admitted her feelings even to herself and the guys have not mentioned their’s to each other or the possibility of sharing. I don’t care about the lack of smut but I still wanted more emotional interactions. Just a fair warning if you choose to read.

- I liked all of the characters but we know basically nothing about any of them including the FMC. We are told their current missions but that is about it. We know nothing about the FMC before she begins her job with the organization at the beginning of the story. I worry about this because this is only a duology and I fear there won’t be enough time in the next book to let us get to know the characters, solve the overarching plot point and get the harem together. I fear backstory will be less important to this author than action in the coming book.

- For a dark RH novel the author didn’t go into even minor detail about the torture or how the FMC was dealing with it. We got a few vague comments about possible techniques used against her and a couple of scenes of her being hit and given drugs that cause pain. Otherwise it was all time jumps. Honestly being vague during the “torture” and captivity scenes made it seem not as bad as the author probably intended it to be. Her injuries implied it was bad but we got more scenes of them giving her food and water and commenting on how the techniques “weren’t working” than any actual torture. This made the “bad guys” seem kind of reasonable which I’m guessing was not the intended effect. I also have a huge pet peeve of abuse happening in a book but the character reacting to it/healing from it in an unrealistic manner. Other than some limping and a couple of brief mentions of nightmares Patch seemed perfectly fine emotionally/psychologically and not really traumatized from her time of captivity. They comment that she has a dark look in her eyes but that is about all.

-It has been implied she was possibly sexually assaulted or raped (The gusset being ripped out of her panties, the guys mentioning the possibility) but she didn’t react poorly to the guys carrying her or when each of them kissed her. This implies either no sexual trauma happened or her reactions are unrealistic of a victim of sexual abuse. She doesn’t flinch when they near her, when they appear behind her or when they touch her unexpectedly. I get everyone heals differently and reacts in their own ways to trauma but it just isn’t realistic based on the level of torture and pain implied and that really bothers me.

- The author spent a lot of time commenting on and having Patch ruminate on the other female prisoner for it to be completely inconsequential. Why waste the space unless it will be a call back in the second book. It is mentioned multiple times that she feels she can’t trust her but no reason or interaction is ever given. If this hints at her having a role in the next book then it was really heavy handed. If the character is not present in the next book then it was an idiotic red herring that didn’t work well and was overly obvious. As it stands this character could have been deleted completely and absolutely nothing would change.

-The final mission seemed stupid and unlike what 4 highly trained people with different impressive skill sets
Would have done. How have they been found/tricked/harmed so easily when they have avoided any issues for years when working individually. You would think teaming up would improve their skills not eradicate them entirely. Again it seems unrealistic.

-Throughout the book they get separated so often that it is frustrating. This is especially annoying when they magically meet up after stating plainly that they didn’t plan a meet up location ahead of time. If that is the case how they hell do you find each other when you are hiding all traces of yourself so the enemy group can’t find you? Again it doesn’t make a lot of sense and seems infeasible.

After writing it out it has become glaringly obvious that my overall complaint about this book is that it is unrealistic. Not just in terms of real life as I am perfectly capable of suspending belief even in a contemporary fiction novel, but unrealistic in the world the author has created and with what we know of these characters in mind.

Also complete side rant that has nothing to do with my rating: How could someone as intelligent and advanced in tech like Patch be so easily fooled by a covert intelligence agency for multiple years? I get being naive when young and being duped into joining. What I don’t get is how it took her literal years to realize she was helping a corrupt group? How is this possible with her being in charge of her hacking group? She oversaw the operations and had a hand in every mission her group worked on. Shouldn’t she have noticed sooner? I think she said it took 7 missions to realize what she was doing was wrong? For someone set up by the author to be some outrageously intelligent tech virtuoso this is awfully idiotic of her. Patch also hinted in the first chapter that her boss had suspicions about her. If this was true why wouldn’t they have killed her and moved on? I suppose it would be that they were trying to be sure of what she knew before taking her out which is why her keyboard was being tracked/highjacked at the beginning. I feel this is unlikely something a covert group would take the time to do instead of killing her and then having a tech person search her hard drives afterwards. It’s also odd she had the time to steal all of their data, all of their money and set up a new life before casually strolling out of the office without anyone noticing any issues. They don’t have a single tech person in this secret organization with tech skills on par with the FMC? Just more unrealistic plot lines I suppose…

Creative Concept
I absolutely blitzed through this book I just couldn’t put it down! Patch is our FMC who’s on the run from her previous life that put her in a precarious position, she’s managed to to keep under the radar for five years until she disappears one night 😖 in her new life as an operator she’s created some unique friendships along the way… there’s Locke our master thief who certainly has a suave side to him alongside his obsessiveness with our girl; Mac is the ex military mercenary who walks outside the line and will put it all on the line to protect his lass; then Remington the British sniper/assassin whose calm and controlled demeanour is slowly being chipped away at by our leading lady 🥰 when she doesn’t answer their calls they set out to find her and in doing so form an unlikely alliance and an essence of brotherhood that I think each of them needs 😀 this is a slow burn but it fits for the storyline and what Patch has to go through (do check TWs) but she refused to give up! She’s such a strong character and quirky but very likeable! When these four put their heads together then this secret organisation best watch out, I don’t think they’re going to let the threats go lightly 😮😮 will see how they get their revenge on the next book!

Audio:
4-5 stars for John Hartley (loved his voice for Remy and the other two were alright haha)
5 stars for Brooke Daniels she killed it!

Book: 4-4.5 stars

Wow wasn’t expecting to love this as much as i did! Patch is a bad ass and the three guys: Remington, Locke and McQuade were there to support her and not take over which I loved.

Also the fact that there was no sex in this book was the right choice because of what Patch went through it wouldn’t have felt realistic. All the guys kissed her, but nothing more.

This did end on a cliffhanger and the second audio comes out this Tuesday so I am excited to pick up where this left off then!

This was so good!! I couldn’t put it down. I love all the characters, and the mystery is really mystery-ing. My only complaint is that sometimes the writing was a little dense and I did want slightly more spicy but I’m guessing that will all be in the second book.

Sometimes while reading a book you can feel the passion an author feels for her characters and her story. It’s like the muse didn’t just influence the author, but left a little piece of itself behind within the story. As a result, you end up with a plot that holds tight onto its readers, refusing to let go until you read the final word. That’s how enraptured I was with this first book in the Switchboard duet, and the characters within.

Really, every single thing about this book was amazing. The suspense, the action, the character building, the twists and turns, … You just need to deal with a slow burn romance, but that also fits with the storyline and I absolutely love the tension between these three dangerous men who aren’t planning on sharing.

I occasionally see readers requesting a book with an fmc who’s similar to Garcia in Criminal Minds. Well, if you read this: you found her! Patch is her own woman, but the first character ever who reminded me of the woman behind the screen. I can’t wait to see how her story continues in book two.

I have enjoyed the authors other works, so I was really interested to give this a go. The overall idea of it was really interesting, and I loved the intelligent tech FMC approach. The focus was more on her intelligence, than her looks and I was all in for that.
I did struggle with a lot of aspects of this read though, and it defintely didn't deliver like I hoped it would. There is ZERO backstory to any of the characters, I also have no idea what the MMCS look like (other than Remy being bald and from Stoke on Trent). So I think as there was no history, connection or visuals of the MMCs I just couldn't differentiate between them when reading the dialogue. There were many parts I had to re read to try and figure out who was talking, as there just wasn't much character and personality to them. I know what each did for their job, but other than that it wasn't clear.
Once the FMC has been taken, there is a lot of time jumping and most of her experience is brushed over and you just know about some of the injuries but not really how they were acquired. There is a complete disconnect for the reader, and also there is no trauma afterwards. Ultimately the FMC is behind the scenes as an operator and isn't trained to withstand torture, so how comes there is no trauma for her to work through after? And other than having her feet tended to, and to sleep it off, there doesn't seem to be much in terms of injuries that were indicated during her time in captivity. I thought she was struggling to breathe because of her ribs?
I also didn't understand the point of the other female held with her, if she had no point to the plot then I would rather have had that time focusing on the FMC or the MMCs stories.
Whilst I understand this was a slow burn...it just did not come across as a romance at all. There were minimal feelings and most of the characters spent their time apart. I assumed the spice would be slow burn, but there was just zero romance or chemistry anywhere for me to feel compelled to continue. I really liked how the book started with the FMC and MMCS briefly flirting whilst she was their operator...but that ended pretty quickly once the plot developed.
Overall it was a great idea, but there isn't enough connection to the characters for me.

what happened

H Long is such a good writer! Do not get put off by this one.

This went left. I don’t even know what this is. I read it and couldn’t tell you what any of them looked like except for her having blond hair with black tips.

The insta love is so weird.
She has no feelings for any of them and doesn’t act like she does but these people act like she’s the love of their lives and she loves them. Weird.

All interactions and business professional with a bit of fun banter. If you could even call it that. It’s like 1 chapter of it.

Alll the computer mumbo jumbo. I don’t care. Back end opening with file encryption to have a pathway to the file ect. Say it once then move on.

I knew nothing about the girl or the three weirdos.

DNF at p290 when I realized this isn’t fan fic and I don’t need to give it a chance to get better.

Audiobook (duet style): ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

I'm surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did, and I'm even more surprised that I didn't hear about this book before.
This was action-packed, keeping me on my toes with every page. The flirting had me swooning, and the banter had me giggling the whole time. This is the first time I've read an RH book where the MMCs didn't know each other before meeting the FMC, and it was delicious to see their intentions and how they learned to work with each other to save the FMC and to be there for her.
Can't wait to see what happens in the next book and see how they navigate the relationship now that they know they all want her.

4.5 stars: This was such a unique plot, loved it from the start and probably would have finished it way earlier if outside forces did not intervene with my reading. The main heroine ,Patch, is such a lovely character. She is quirky, witty and a genuine mastermind when it comes to hacking.

Locke, Mac and Remington are rather unique in their own way and I have to say that I loved the slight bickering that was going back and forth between them. Patch has been their 'go to girl' when it comes to missions and she has saved their lives numerous times, so when their guardian angel vanishes, all three of them dive straight into finding her.

What Patch goes true is rather sever and it is another example of her strength and perseverance. I thought that the author has done superbly with some of the darker scenes as you get the gist of it alongside the mental and emotional turmoil that the FMC experiences without actually having anything in detail written on page.

When the characters set their mind on something, there is nothing and no one able to stop them, so I reckon the unexpected group of four will be force to be reckoned with. In terms of romance, there is nothing taking place here, but it is evident that Patch has had a meaningful connection with each of the MMCs, one that has been built on mutual trust, respect and care through the years they have been working together. The solid backbones are there, so I suppose when things develop further between them, it will be magical.

Starting the second book as I cannot wait to see what those hurricanes of characters shall do next, not to mention that there is just nothing sweeter than a well earned revenge and something tells me that if I were in the secret organisation's shoes, I would dread the havoc that is about to be unleashed.

I like the idea of this book. The Romance pace is slow burn. Not much romance happens in the first book. The pace of the story was good for most parts. But at the end it lost steam and also the outcome of the thing at the end was pretty clear, still there was a huge cliffhanger. I would say after 65% I had trouble to get through this book. And it is kind of sad, because I read more books in her really long series before loosing interest. So I was happy about a Duet and now I'm already struggling in the last third of the first book. Naturally I picked up the second, because of the cliffhanger.

Incredible! Can’t wait for the next book

OMG OMG OMG!
I don’t even want this book to be a duet, I’m greedy already wanting so much more. It was amazing from start to finish, with a cliffhanger that’s left my heart and mind racing. I cannot wait for the next part to Patch’s story. Action packed, angsty, but with a whole lot of suspense and 3 men that I’ve began falling for, this book completely hooks you. I couldn’t put it down, once I started and I cannot wait for everything to come to light, I need answers and have soooooo many questions spiralling in my mind over and over. Is it too soon to reread? I can’t wait to get to know her men more, I love them already for the way they all came to be. Patch deserves her happy ending and I can’t wait for her to get it.

This is a phenomenal start to a duet that I know will be amazing. Loved every second of it

Was not expecting to love this as much as I did.
The back and forth banter that Patch had with each of the guys is so cute and funny.
The badassery(shut up spellcheck. It is Too a word..)she displays is SO satisfying.
The way the torture was written was honestly really tasteful.
The guys’ interactions with each other were funny and I loved all of their thoughts about each other.

Just.
Yes.
I can’t wait for when the romance actually starts kicking in past all the flirting and longing.

Trigger Warnings (given by author)~

Mentions of SA. Kidnapping. Intimidation. Torture. Interrogation. Car accidents. Threats of violence. Scenes of combat. Violence.

Main Attention ~ Patch

A badass queen with a high IQ and technical expertise. She is one of the strongest female leads I've ever read and one of the smartest. I highly admired her personality and loved her mindset throughout the story. She never breaks under the direst of situations, clinging to hope and planning escape routes. Also, she's a Swiftie!

Other Voices

Remington, a ghost-like sniper; Locke, a silver-tongued thief; and McQuade, a vigorous mercenary. Smitten by the voice of their operator, Patch, who helps them in their separate missions, they immediately sense something is wrong when she stops responding. Banding together all their resources, they set off on a journey to rescue the woman whom they have never seen.

Musings~

A very unique and intriguing plot. For most of the part, I was very unaware of the of the situations, jobs, and duties of the characters in this story, but the way the author explained things was enough for me to understand the story. I was hooked right from the beginning. It was very well-written and the characters were just amazing!

Parting Thoughts~

It was worth reading. I'm very excited to see how the story unfolds in the next part. These characters are gonna stay in my heart for a long time.

"They were more than the men I'd talked through everything on the phone. They were just more."

TALK TO ME has a pretty unique plot. Our FMC Patch is an operator who helps her clients make it out of their missions alive. Shes a jack of all trades when it comes to computers and even though she's running from her past and it's not smart, she forms attachments to a few of the men she helps. When Patch doesn't answer their call, they make it their mission to track her down. But can a mercenary, an assassin and a thief put asides their differences for the one woman they all want?

This was a solid idea, but I wasn't as invested as I hoped. I did like Patch and the guys, and I actually liked that the romance was only hinted at in this but not explored. It made sense with what Patch goes through. She needs times to recover and even though she spoke to these men sometimes daily, she didn't really know them so I'm glad the author is giving time to form genuine bonds and not just make it physical.

Will I read the next book? Not sure to be honest. My reading mood has shifted but I'll keep this duet on hold and might revisit later.

3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book completely caught me off guard in the best way. I went in with expectations and got something far more original, intense, and addictive.

The plot is sharp and fast-paced, with nonstop action and tension. Patch is a tough, capable FMC who owns her mistakes. As a hacker and operator, she keeps her clients alive from behind the scenes ... until the day she goes silent. When she’s compromised, her three main clients independently set out to find her… despite not knowing (or liking) each other.

Watching the three guys clash while working toward the same goal was a highlight. They’re all wildly different, full of tension, and clearly set up for future chaos. There’s no real spice in this book (just hints and connection), but the plot more than makes up for it, and it’s obvious this is a foundation for what’s to come.

I loved the writing style .... no unnecessary descriptions, just clean, efficient storytelling that keeps things moving. The tech and hacking elements added to the suspense without becoming overwhelming.

Intense, original, and impossible to put down.

🖤 Tropes:

Reverse harem (minimal romance in book one)

Suspense / action-packed

Hacker FMC

Multi POV

This book is amazing. Full of mystery, suspense, drama and tension. Patch has closed herself off from the world, only dealing with people through a phone line. When she suddenly stops answering, 3 very different men all take notice and worry. They immediately start searching for information and clues to her whereabouts. They all run into each other, and decide to form a tense partnership. They rescue Patch, but the danger doesn’t end there. Not a lot of spice in this one, which makes sense given everything Patch just went through. These guys don’t trust each other, and I don’t know how it’s going to work out but I’m so excited to find out! Impatiently waiting for book 2!!

Yikes! What a mess... the plot and characters made no sense! No details were included to help identify the male characters. I couldn't even tell you who is who in the end. Chapters and chapters of detailed computer hacking made this so dry! It was a struggle to finish this book because there was nothing interesting to keep me reading.

🎶 “I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known…” 🎶

Five years ago, Patch (h) disappeared from the life she once knew, stepping into the shadows of a new, secret existence. Now, she’s known only by her online alias, working as a highly skilled information specialist for clients who need her expertise in the world of covert operations. From the comfort of her hidden life, Patch orchestrates their success from behind a screen, providing intel, hacking systems, and guiding them through dangerous situations.

“Talk to me,” I said, then took a long drink of my latte.

“Hello, Patch. It’s always good to hear your sexy voice. Did you roll out of bed just for me?”

Honestly, I didn’t connect with any of the main characters—Patch, Locke, Remy, or McQuad. And that’s kind of a problem when they’re the ones carrying the story. None of them really stood out or felt memorable to me. They’re all so secretive and mysterious, but it just made them come off as a bit flat. I couldn’t figure out what made them special or why I should care about them. The whole plot revolves around Locke, Remy, and McQuade teaming up to find Patch, even though they don’t really know each other. Their alliance is based more on convenience than anything else. They don’t have this deep bond or anything; it’s just a truce of mutual benefit to find Patch and keep her safe. It’s clear they all know of each other, but it doesn’t feel like they actually know each other. They’ve been working with Patch for a while, but the book doesn’t really show us how well they understand each other. They have some random facts about each other, but there’s no real sense of trust or connection.

“You ever wonder if there was something else you could be doing right now?”

The lack of romance didn’t throw me off at all—I’m not here for forced love stories, and it’s fine if that’s not the focus. But the random kisses? Those didn’t make sense. Patch has been through some serious trauma. And she’s still super closed off about what happened to her. So, seeing her getting all touchy-feely with these guys felt weird. Honestly, Patch did give us some backstory about why she’s been hiding for five years, but it wasn’t enough to make me care. Like, yeah, we get some of the why behind her being in hiding, but I never felt fully invested in her story or what she’s been through. It just didn’t pull me in enough. And then there’s the guys—sure, they all have their own special skills, but that’s about it. We know what they can do, but we don’t really get to know them. It felt like there was so much more that could’ve been explored, but it just... wasn’t.

Honestly, by the time I got through the book, I wasn’t even excited about reading the next one. It was a struggle to get through, and I just wasn’t hooked enough to care about what happens next. I didn’t feel any emotional connection to the characters or their journey, and the pacing was just painfully slow. I ended up feeling pretty bored, and that’s not a great sign when you’re supposed to be invested in a two-book series. It just didn’t have that pull for me, and I can’t say I’m eager to continue the duet.
