Paul and Tina Nimos are like a lot of young married couples, they’re madly in love but finances are putting a strain on their relationship. Their home renovation business is struggling, and with a new baby in the house, bills are piling up. When Paul finds a cheap house to buy and flip, he thinks their problems are solved. It’s an older New England home, with plenty of history and once it’s repaired it should command a great price.
But as Paul and Tina begin the daunting task of restoring the new house, they struggle with the reconstruction. It seems the home doesn’t want to be repaired. As they fall behind in their renovation they realize that unexplained forces are conspiring against them and that helpful friends might not be who they seem.
Soon the couple realizes that a Crone could be the source of their troubles. But it might be too late, as the house and the Crone prepare to extract a horrific toll from Paul, Tina, and their baby. Will they be able to fight back against a centuries-old evil? The Crone, don’t ever let her in.
Kevin Bachar is a national EMMY award-winning natural history documentary filmmaker and WGA writer. The elevated horror film he wrote - The Inhabitant - https://www.lionsgate.com/movies/the-...? - was released through Lionsgate and is available on most streaming services.
If you’ve watched National Geographic, PBS, or The Discovery Channel over the years you’ve seen his work. He’s the idiot in the water filming sharks or crawling into caves to photograph vampire bats. You can see Kevin at work filming sharks here - https://www.imdb.com/video/vi2703407897/...
The natural world has always captured his imagination and the supernatural world inspires his stories. Through his journeys, he’s interviewed scientists who’ve enlightened him, heard folk tales that have frightened him, and seen quite a few things that have challenged his skeptical mind.
His collection of short stories that weaves together the natural world and the supernatural world entitled, DREAD, is available on Amazon. He's currently working on his second collection entitled - CREEP.
The Crone is a million mile an hour horror ride with an unnerving and very evil ancient witch, twists and turns, and a family you'll care about.
Paul and Tina are house flippers yet barely scraping by. With a five year old daughter and another on the way, Paul becomes obsessed with a certain house. He buys it at an auction and soon realises something very horrific already lives there.
This novel plays like a movie in your head and it's a movie I would definitely watch. An evil supernatural crone, a room that might literally be painted in blood, and a curse all put this family's lives in jeopardy. As more is revealed, the more terrifying it becomes.
It's fast paced narrative really makes reading it easy and you won't want to put it down until the end. It's just a fantastic horror book meant to tell a frightening story and it succeeds wonderfully. I highly recommend it.
I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
Paul and Tina Nimos are house flippers, but not the kind that are getting rich off a real estate boon. They and their young daughter move from one fixer upper to the next, renovating and moving on to another dilapidated home every few months. Paul is sure that the next house will be their gold mine, but Tina is fed up with chasing the rainbow for the pot of gold that never comes. Finances are the biggest fight in their marriage. That, coupled with a tragic incident in their past would be more than enough to break some marriages. When Paul sees "Hex House," he is compelled to buy it even though they are already deeply in debt. When he shows the house to Tina, she also falls under it's spell, and they agree to make this their forever home. Creepy happenings ensue!
This book would fit right in with old school 80s horror and I loved it. The struggling family and marriage issues are totally relatable. The ancient witch who preys on their vulnerabilities makes for a classic good vs. evil story which is one of my favorite horror tropes. The dark past of Hex House is steeped in folk horror and the spooky atmosphere made for a shivery good time without an excess of gore. I couldn't put it down and nearly let my Thanksgiving potatoes boil over because I just had to read one more page. Read this book when you can devote all of your time to it because you won't be able to focus on anything else until you reach the end.
The Crone by Kevin Bachar is one of the best horror novels I have read in a while. It’s part of his stand alone Houses Of Horror series. Most people think of their home as places of comfort and safety. Not so, Kevin Bachar’s homes. They are filled with horror and terror.
The fabulous cover hints at the horror awaiting new homeowners Paul and Tina Nimos. They are house flippers. Buying homes, fixing them up, and then selling them. This time, the house is in good shape and they are going to make it their forever home…Or so they think. The Crone will have something to say about that.
A sharp piece of wood, a drop of blood, and The Crone is released. What started out as hope for their forever home quickly feels like a curse. But the Crone never faced anyone like Tina before. Tina had served in Afghanistan, and she will put up one hell of a fight to protect her family and claim the house as their own.
I had moments of familiarity, like when she goes to the grocery store and has to put items back because she didn’t have enough money. I’m happy those days are over for me, I just hope it’s over for Tina too. It is small moments like this, that make the characters relatable and realistic…even The Crone…if you believe in that sort of thing.
I found myself smiling at the cute dialogue between Tina and her daughter, Katie.
“How about the Daddy doll? Does he listen to the Mommy?”
“No, he never does…..”He’s always in time out. Not very good at listening.”
Thrills and chills abound in The Crone by Keven Bachar. Sometimes the horror is subtle and anticipatory, other times it’s in your face. To add to the ambience, cozy up in your favorite reading place, turn out the lights, and read The Crone.
The Crone was unpudownable and has a great ending. I was soon flying through the pages, I read The Crone in one sitting, so take note, once you start you may not be able to stop.
I want to start this review by saying that Kevin kindly sent me an ARC of The Crone for an honest review. Now, I’m sure some of you, like me, feel that little twinge of fear when reviewing ARCs—what if it’s not good? Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. I genuinely loved this book.
First off, the writing flows like a movie. The descriptions, character shifts, and the way events unfold make it easy to visualize. If I had to compare it, I’d say The Crone feels like a mix of Sinister, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and a dash of The Shining (book, not movie).
The story follows a couple who flip houses for a living, but it’s not just the paranormal drama they’re dealing with—there are cracks in their relationship and their personal demons to confront. What really stood out to me was how the author described the husband’s initial experiences in the house. They’re written in such a way that, while you're yelling at him to leave, you also completely get why he sticks around. It feels stupid yet so real—like, "Oh yeah, I would do the same thing."
I’ll wrap this up with two final thoughts:
1. If anyone ever describes a house with words like "religious fervor," RUN.
2. Finally... j-3-y-l-l-l-x-5-n-d-l-3-y (You’ll know when you read it!).
The Crone comes out on October 20th on paperback and the 30th on ebook.
Suspense is the one word that describes this story. In this story the author has given his readers a huge hero sandwich, and in between the slices of bread lay the obsession of each character's heart. You should never wear your heart on your sleeve. Because in this adventure your heart might literally be taken!!!
Most predators like playing with their food before finally eating it. Well, this story plays right into that scenario. Just one of the enjoyable writing talents' K. Bachar has. Another would be ensuring that his characters are completely relatable for his readers. This type of engagement allows the reader to place him/herself in the plot and become part of the story.
The reader truly cannot put this story down, because the need to know what happens next is as natural as breathing. Seriously who would have thought to write about a room so spellbinding that someone could lose time and possibly their mind in a matter of hours, simply fascinating!!!!
I highly recommend this book especially since it is spooky season. Thank you for my advanced copy of this wonderful story.
The Crone is a book 2 in the House of Horror series. This book is even better than the first! Let's just say that The Crone makes you never want to flip a house. It gives you a creepy, eerie feeling of fear, dread, uneasiness, and the inability to shake the feeling that evil is in the room breathing over your shoulder. The way the author Kevin Bachar can weave these constant feelings through you as a reader is pure talent. I am excited to see what's in store in the next book as his writing gets better and better. If a book makes my palms sweat it's worth the read!
Second book in the Houses of Horror series. Great creepy, suspenseful story. Easy read. I actually liked the first book, The Visitor, better, but this one was a good read also.
One thing…does anyone proofread these books? Both The Visitor and this story had grammatical errors, misspelled words, typos, etc. Very weird. But aside from that, great read!
Bachar knows how to bring the scary! Each of his books is better than the next. The Crone spins a great yarn that's highly readable and fills you with the wonderful dread you love from this genre. Recommended!
