Pride or Die: A Novel

Rate this book
In this delightful dark comedy debut, when the members of an LGBTQ+ club find themselves accidentally framed for attempted murder, it's up to them to clear their names before it's too late.

It’s kind of hard to graduate high school when you’re the prime suspect in an attempted murder.

Seventeen-year-old Eleanora Finkel just wants to finish her senior year and get the hell out of Texas. But when her club meeting inconveniently coincides with an attack on the school’s head cheerleader, she and her friends find themselves in the hot seat.

In order to clear their names and ensure the survival of their club for future queer teens, they’ll have to track down the real culprit themselves. But Eleanora is far from a professional detective; she’s riddled with anxiety, annoyingly attracted to the case’s cute victim, and her trusty crochet hook feels insufficient for fighting off a murderer. Can this ragtag group of unlikely sleuths find their way out of an entire freaking murder mystery before one of them is next?

C. L. Montblanc’s debut novel is a young adult mystery featuring several members of the senior class at Hillview High School in fictional Cabotsville, Texas. Eleanora just wants to finish her senior year and get out of Texas. However, when her club meeting coincides with an attack on the school’s head cheerleader, she and her friends find themselves the prime suspects in an attempted murder.

Unable to rely upon the principal, teachers, or the police, Eleanora, Tyler, Noah, and Salim decide to clear their names and ensure the survival of their club for future teens. They’re not detectives, but they decide their only choice is to become sleuths and solve the mystery. The club is for those who identify differently or are unsure of their orientation or those who need a safe haven among friends.

The four main characters are reasonably well developed. The story is from Eleanora’s point of view and she has the most depth. She is headstrong, tends to go full speed ahead, and cares about having a safe haven for future students. She also tends to make everything her burden to carry. Readers get a good feel for several of the supporting characters, including Kenley, the cheerleader and her boyfriend.

The novel starts with the attempted murder in the first chapter and a lot of the story is about solving the mystery and finding who actually is responsible for the attack. However, the book is about much more than that. It has threads woven throughout the novel about bullying, secrets, gossip, lies, teenagers trying to get into colleges, reputations being ruined, and irresponsible adults trying to blame the action on a group for expediency rather than fully investigating the crime.

The premise of the novel is great. However, I felt that several of the adults were somewhat exaggerated, especially the police reliance on Principal Ballard’s word versus evidence. Additionally, the minors were questioned without a parent or guardian. While there is some humor sprinkled throughout the book, the topics it explores are serious and these are what kept me invested in the story. The actual culprit was a little too easily discerned, but there are a couple of other surprises in the somewhat over-the-top ending.

Overall, this is an engaging debut young adult mystery novel full of teen angst that also has some plot twists along with social commentary. It has a great message without excessive and unnecessary oversimplification.

St. Martin’s Press – Wednesday Books and Lindy Ryan provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for April 15, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

✨I too fear tinnitus and am armed only with a crochet hook✨

10/10 this was VERY fun!!! And it’s great if you’re in a feel good (attempted) murder mystery mood since no one actually dies and (most) of the characters are lovely. Since I’m a romance girlie at heart, I can normally count on YA mystery/thrillers to have a little something going on in that department, and this one did not disappoint!!

I really really loved the author’s voice and can’t wait to read more from them! The narrator was great and was a great fit with the humor!

I received a free copy from Macmillan Audio. All opinions are honest and my own.

It’s not like Eleanora didn’t have enough problems to deal with already. As the founder of her Texas high school’s LGBTQ club, she was hoping to pass the torch on to the next generation when she and her friends graduate this year. But the club is WILDLY unpopular, and no underclassmen are interested in joining the club, let alone taking the reins. Enter an even bigger problem to deal with: while the rest of the school attends a pep rally, a popular cheerleader is attacked and left for dead in the hallway. The only people who skipped the pep rally are the members of the LGBTQ club, and they become the prime suspects. Eleanora and her friends need to solve the mystery in order to clear their names…but in doing so, they may become the assailant’s next targets.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a fun YA thriller with a narrative voice that sounds like an actual teenager. There’s a big cast of characters who have distinct personalities without feeling like cliche archetypes. And I enjoyed the sweet little love story that serves as a subplot. If you’re an adult looking for a book for the teen in your life, this is a great choice. And while you’re at it, get yourself a copy too! It’s perfect beach read material.

Thank you to the publisher for giving me access to an early digital copy.

Pride or Die follows Eleanora Finkel and her friends during their Senior year of high school in Texas. Eleanora has founded a LGBTQ+ Club at their school, which ends up playing a large role in this story.

During one of their meetings, the school's head cheerleader, Kenley, is attacked right outside the classroom that the Club is meeting in, and she's fairly badly injured.

Hearing the assault, the Club members rush out into the hall and find Kenley there on the floor. Suddenly, they find themselves the main suspects. Why?

I have no idea.

In order to clear their names, and ensure the survival of their Club, they must now investigate the crime and find out who really attacked Kenley.

I found the whole mystery a bit lackluster. Eleanora was running around like the sky was falling in, claiming she had to protect her friends because there was a homophobic murderer on the loose, yet no one was murdered and the person attacked was a popular straight girl who wasn't even a member of their club?

It just seemed like, out of all the mysteries you could have developed, a very odd choice to me. Even after the Scooby-Doo like reveal, I was left scratching my head about it all.

Sadly, Pride or Die was not a hit for me. I love YA Mystery-Thrillers and do read a lot of them. Going into this, I was excited to get a strong Mystery, set in high school, following the members of an LGBTQ+ group.

Unfortunately, the MC, Eleanora, I found her personality to be so incredibly-grating, it was hard to focus on anything else. I'm happy she had a bit of self-reflection at the end, but it almost felt like too little, too late.

Honestly, I feel like the author did the story a disservice by only having that one perspective. I really enjoyed Noah and Tyler, Eleanor's friends, as well as Kenley.

I wish I would have had the opportunity to get to know all of them more, but Eleanora was so self-absorbed, I really feel like I didn't know anything about anyone else.

I hated the way every SINGLE PERSON, besides Eleanora's three friends, were portrayed. Even the people showing her kindness, Eleanor judged and said critical things about.

I just found her perspective and outlook completely exasperating. There was zero nuance allowed and every single character was a stereotype of what that 'type' of person should be.

There were also so many odd, cringe-worthy moments, that I can't really get into here without giving away important plot points, but yeah, chapter after chapter of that type of thing gets old quick.

I will say, the audiobook narrator, Ina Marie Smith, was really great. She was believable, vocally, as a teen, and she exuded emotion and sincerity throughout.

At the end of the day, this just wasn't to my tastes. If you think the synopsis sounds intriguing though, I certainly encourage you to pick it up. Please don't take my word for it. I'm sure many Readers will have fun with this one.

Thank you to the publisher, Macmillan Audio, for providing me with a copy to read and review. Even though it didn't necessarily work for me, I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Book Tagline: When the members of an LGBTQ+ club find themselves accidentally framed for attempted murder, it's up to them to clear their names before it's too late.

I love a good mystery. I love teen protagonists trying to find whodunit. I am always pleased to see great messages about inclusion and diversity.

But this one missed the mark for me in a few ways. The mystery, while interesting, took too long to be revealed and when the motive appeared, I felt disappointed. I also thought the romance element between one of the members of the club and the "victim" was not all that appealing. Even when I was a teen myself, I disliked the whole " I am being mean to you because I hate myself and won't admit to my desire for you." Not romantic, in the least.

Beautiful cover, though!

Pride or Die
Releases: April 15, 2025

Pride or Die by CL Montblanc is a humorous suspense that will keep you entertained throughout. A quick and fun read that blew through every expectation I had.

Elenora vowed to never let another student at Hillview High ever feel like they were alone ever again. She created a LGBTQ+ Club despite the mocks and push back she got for it. But during one of their club meetings head cheerleader and bully, Kenley, is attacked and the club members become prime suspects number 1. It was the club members who first found Kenley in the school hallway and as an assembly was just ending kids and teachers flooded into that hallway and say the club members with Kenley unconscious.

Now the club needs to clear their names and cannot depend on anyone to do that besides themselves. The LGBTQ+ Club has been shut down and will only reopen when and if the club members are cleared of the attack.

This was a fun read with many giggle moments. But behind the humor, real and timely issues are explored. The mystery of who was behind the attack of Henley kept me flipping the pages - having to know what really happened and who was responsible.

The characters are dynamic and relatable. This book will take you right back to your high school days. The principal, who called the club the BLT club, is unbearable - it’s mostly the other characters that are relatable (most not all lol).

Memorable: Sloppy Joe

Themes:
LGBTQIA+
Bullying
Attempted Murder
Fear and Anxiety
Friendship
Identity

A solid read. The perfect ending!

2 Stars (unfortunately)

I wanted to like this book so bad. I didn't come into it thinking it was going to be the best book of 2025, but I came into it wanting to have fun. And I just... didn't get that. I didn't get invested in the characters. There's a lot of suspension of disbelief here to make the plot work, and I never knew what the plan was. I've got to know the plan to be rooting for the characters, you know? But they just kept kind of doing things, and I didn't know why. I didn't know what we wanted the outcome to be. I was not invested. And I was irritated. So... not a great reading experience.

That isn't to say this book didn't have its moments. It definitely did. And I'll go through those in my full review, available at Gateway Reviews on April 18, 2025. Stop by if you get the chance!

Note: I was provided with an ARC by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions here are my own.

Filled with laugh-out-loud worthy prose, breathtaking plot twists, and timely social commentary, Pride or Die is a compelling (almost) murder mystery that is at once unapologetically and delightfully queer. If you love stories about gay people solving crime, CL Montblanc’s debut is a must-read.

Pride Or Die , by CL Montblanc
.5-1/5⭐️

TRIGGER WARNINGS-
.
.
.
Violence, drinking, attempted murder, bullying, homophobia

This book just wasn’t for me. I think it’s more for a younger audience like middle/high school. With that being said I had a few issues that made it difficult to push though to finish.
-Unbelievable that at 17 they don’t know that they shouldn’t be questioned as minors alone. But later on she says shouldn’t they have a lawyer present when they are questioned again. Not one of them said let me call my adult???? Even though Tyler is wanting to get into law school…
-How the principal gets away with calling them “blt” and then gets mad at “sloppy joe” but none of the kids stand up for themselves or tells their parent’s. The email was proof that the principal calls them “slurs/names”.
-That the school/cops jump right past them as suspects and to them as being the ones who did it with next to no evidence and everyone, even the parent’s just roll with it…
-Adults weren’t notified about the assault and the kids were just sent home without a parent knowing they were leaving school grounds.
-Adults weren’t notified cops showed up and took them in for questioning.
-Throughout the whole book it goes on about a murderer/killer on the loose but she wasn’t killed and is not dead. “That everyone has to watch out for a violent person”, when it was just one isolated incident…
-Very overly descriptive and overly done. Felt like a child trying to write a creative writing assignment and use all the big, new fancy words that they just learned.
-Let the principal interfere with the investigation/do his own, like talk to the kids without an adult, interject into an active case and talk to suspects????
-Academic probation?!?! Again where’s the parents…are they not to be informed of anything…
-Teachers not standing up for the kids…it’s like she’s just throwing characters in that really don’t serve a purpose, just might be needed for some reason later on…
-Seemed to make a bigger deal than the situation that was actually presented in the books, over doing it?
-Kenley’s Injuries were so sever but no one heard or saw anything?
-Arrested as a minor but no parents contacted…
-The guidance counsellor is OK giving out information about her coworkers to a student trying to solve a crime instead of reporting everything to the parents and the police. And then fleas when there’s danger instead of staying and getting help.
-Her mom jokes about her solving the case yet. Not even the parents take it seriously. Not going to the school or police to confront them about the treatment of their children.
-All of this was not done right, no basis for the book…No research was done at all in prep for this book.
-I don’t understand how Eleanors’s point about how Sal could’ve done it based off of Kenley’s statement equated to her being racist. I don’t get how it has anything to do with him being a Muslim and why that was even brought up? Felt like they were trying to tackle to many diff subject matters and narratives and out them in places where they didn’t quite fit.

*thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy of this book to review.*

When high school senior Eleanora Finkel gets caught up in a murder mystery, she has to clear her name—and protect her LGBTQ+ club—while juggling anxiety, friendship drama, and a whole lot of chaos.

This book was just a good time. Be gay, solve crime indeed!! The premise is great, and it’s giving mystery/slasher vibes. I loved our queer little friend group. Such great representation. Salim and Tyler were standouts. I also cracked up constantly at Noah 😅.

But honestly, kept my attention the whole time and while I did suspect the person it was, the ending was SO satisfying. Loved the HoCo dance scenes!!

Enjoy!

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing a free e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I went into this book with an open mind that it could be a fun and quick YA murder mystery. Unfortunately, the story was done well through most of the book, but the ending was just utterly ridiculous and was a complete waste of time.

We follow a group of teens in the LGBTQ+ club at their school who are seen as social pariahs and blamed for everything. The main character finds herself in a bind as she finds her once former best friend and now popular girl at school knocked unconscious in the hallway bleeding and immediately the club is found to be be the primary suspects by their school principal who is a biggot and disbands the club.

Of course this sounds like every other social commentary book of the day, and it is with many unnecessary comments regarding people who are not apart of the community and including racial comments that were unnecessary to the story whatsoever. As someone apart of the community, this is getting overplayed, and I don't really think the social rhetoric needs to be shoved down kids' throats, especially when reading a book to escape reality and entertainment.

All of this takes me out of the book completely where there could have been a great story, but unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book as it is quite underwhelming.

When the head cheerleader at school is attacked, the blame is immediately placed on the LGBTQ+ club who was holding a meeting just down the hall at the same time. In addition to already fighting a town and school of bigots, they now see themselves having to fight crime to save the one queer haven at their school.

PRIDE OR DIE by CL Montblanc was such a fun dark comedy centered on friendship and acceptance and crime-solving mayhem!

Our main cast of characters was so fun and each had their own distinct personalities. The hijinks was top-tier and the sleuthing was both clever and creative!

Overall, this was a great YA mystery with amazing rep!

I was so happy to get a free kindle copy of this book from NetGalley. It sounded so good, and I really wanted to read this! So many books that sound good end up falling short, but this one exceeded all of my expectations. Loved it so much!

There were so many great passages from the book that I wanted to share on my feed, things that were so funny or emotional. With getting an advanced reader copy, I can't share any of them, though. I am sure other readers will share them later. There are moments that are so funny, but others that are very heavy, with the topics being dealt with.

At first, I had no idea who the murderer was. Then, I was 99.9% sure I knew who it was. I was 100% wrong. Didn't even suspect the person. Not a single clue.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free kindle book. My review is voluntarily given and my opinions are my own.

Solid 4 star read. My only real beef was certain moments made the characters seem flat. Thankfully by the end it did not feel like that. I loved all of the characters (except the assh*les oc) Decent read overall. I think I’d find it more memorable if it was put to screen. Would recommend. This was such a fun read!
I really enjoyed the writing style and all of the quirky characters in this book. The whole plot was so deeply unserious, but I think that’s part of its charm! I do, however, wish it was a bit more developed as it felt like a really short read to me! But it was such a silly, chaotic little treat!

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder meets The Geography Club in this laugh out loud fun romp of an attempted murder mystery.

When the same head cheerleader who has tormented them for years is attacked down the hall from a meeting of the LGBTQIA+ Club (also while the pep rally is going on), Eleanora and her friends are the prime suspects. It doesn’t help that she came out of the classroom to check what the commotion was about armed with a hammer. When the police arrived they all had the girl’s blood on them.

This was the exact leverage the school principal needed to disband the club. So to clear their names and save the club, they have to solve a (almost) murder… because the girl is still alive and she has a 1 cut into her head from the attacker. Who’s going to be the next victim?

I loved Eleanora and her friends. She has anxiety, which I definitely feel a connection to because of. But even with that, she still will stop at nothing to save her friends. The club she started is in jeopardy and she doesn’t want any queer person to feel alone, which is so incredible. I wish I had half of the passion she has when I was in high school.

Despite the title, no one dies in the book, which I appreciated. This was a good old fashion mystery where lives were at stake (or so we thought). So the thriller portion was great. I thought I knew who the bad guy was the entire book and while I was wrong overall, I was right in a wayyyyyyy. I’m not going to give away too much info in that, because you need to go in without spoilers.

For this to be CL Montblanc’s debut novel is amazing. I can’t wait to see where they go and what’s next. I’m always down for a new voice in queer literature.

An attack on a student, an LGBTQ+ club must band together to solve who done it or be the ones blamed for it.

I love a good YA thriller and I was ready to dig into this one. I loved that it involved an LGBTQ+ group and a band of friends but it was pretty early when I realized this one might not be my cup of tea. The main character and even the friends all felt like caricatures of high school students. No real social media, barely texting and messaging each other - it felt really unrealistic and silly. And the adults were over-the -top awful. Everyone felt very black and white - good or bad - and each adult felt bumbling. Even the ultimate reveal felt like a bit of a letdown. I wish I'd liked this one but I just never seemed to connect with it.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

This was meh for me. I found it highly obvious who the perp was, and I lot of the discussion in this felt really hamfisted and a bit over the top.

I find it weird how uninvolved the adults in this book were with everything going on.

It felt very campy, which I guess can appeal to a certain reader but it didn't work for me.

I did enjoy the friend group in this and how they stuck together.

Not a fan of a certain relationship that develops at the end for reasons that I can't mention because it would spoil the book.

I can see this being a hit for the teen audience.

It's be gay and solve crimes, actually.

I loved this so much *weeps* Every one of these kids, I just want to sweep them up in a hug and kick away everyone who so much as dares to breathe in their direction. The story itself was equal parts heart warming and heart wrenching and it's going to mean a lot to queer kids to see themselves represented like this, especially in the shitshow year that is 2025. It was also surprisingly funny? Like I read the audiobook while walking my dog and laughed out loud multiple times. The principal referring to them as the BLT club actually made me cackle.

I'm hard to please with YA Contemporary but this was a winner right out of the gate. Looking forward to more from this author in future!

I was hoping for something more murder/mystery, and while yes, the characters were investigating an attack like it was a murder, the story line was more about how horribly queer people are treated in Texas. so while I was wanting to DNF this book at the beginning, I grew to really like the characters and the morals this story was teaching. This is a very powerful book, the ending had me grinning so hard so if you get this book please go into it with low expectations for murder/mystery and high expectations for BEING GAY AND SOLVING CRIME.

It was fine, but I wasn't super interested and I had to push myself to finish it. It just didn't feel like there was any risk; they all had the possibility of going to jail, but that barely felt like an actually present threat as the police kind of stopped doing anything. The whole time, it didn't feel like the result would majorly change anything. It didn't feel like the author would let any bad things happen to the characters so it kind of felt like a Disney show. What the people kept referring to as a murder was a short, non-life-threatening hospital stay where the girl was totally fine afterwards. When the mystery was solved, there were no big lasting changes to the main characters or the setting, even once they realized someone they knew had attempted to murder a student. I think the Good Girl's Guide trilogy ruined every other mystery book for me.

This is a MUST read mystery thriller, for those that are looking for LGBTQ+ characters or looking for young adult thrillers with hella plot twists in a small town in a southern red state. Must read if you also like old school diner vibes whether it’s 50s aesthetic or 80s aesthetic. I really love the friend group Eleanora, Salim, Noah, and Tyler. I would hope to read spinoffs of the standalones soon. I still think Derek is an asshole, and the title of this book should’ve been “Pride or Future Dies”
