Two broken hearts get a second chance at love in this atmospheric, suspenseful love story.
Claire has never known affection. Not from the parents who raised her to carry on a family empire or her recently deceased husband, who only married her for that empire. She’s hidden every “needy” emotion, every desire, in the stories she pens by hand. No longer able to bear the shallow condolences, the familial expectations—the dark secret she carries—Claire leaves for the picturesque island of Solsken. It’s her chance to become the woman, the writer, she longs to be.
She never expected him.
Danny is reeling from his ex-wife’s infidelity. Already leaning too heavily on his best friend, he doesn’t need secretive women with guarded smiles and quirky writing habits showing up in his tavern, stealing his attention. He can’t allow the snare of attraction, that mouth, to unravel his carefully built walls. He’s barely holding himself together.
Then the whispers start, a cold touch while Claire sleeps, a window opening without her. Claire’s convinced it’s in her head. Stress. Until a blood-written threat appears, driving her to Danny’s doorstep. She shouldn’t seek him out, it’s not his mess to fix, but there’s the way his eyes never waver from hers, those tender touches she craves.
…And there’s her secret that could tear it all away.
TITLE: OUR BEAUTIFUL MESS AUTHOR: B K Clark PUB DATE: 05.28.2024
BK Clark is an author everyone needs to know right now. She is a debut author, and will always and forever be an auto-buy author for me - simply amazing writer that left me in a puddle of beautiful mess. Just wow! This book!
Small town Forced proximity Relatable characters Twists and Turns Suspenseful A Love story
What a fantastic debut! I knew from the first few chapters that this was going to be a good one. I don’t think I’ve ever read a romantic suspense novel, so this story was a wild ride! It had me laughing hard one moment and then panicking the next. 😱
I love how instead of having just the dual POV, like a lot of romance novels, the author included a 3rd main POV and a brief 4th one. I loved the chance to see Danny and Claire from a close side character’s observation.
The romance was steamy without being too explicit and I loved how they were both protective and helped heal each other’s wounds.
And the suspense element?? I was at the edge of my seat at times and always trying to figure out what was going on! I’m excited to see what this new author comes up with next. 👏🏻
Content: Heavy kissing, one brief open door (vague description), some strong language
From page one, I was hooked- I knew this book was going to be good from the very beginning but I was still blown away! Staying up until 3am to finish this felt like nothing as I couldn’t put it down!
While this is a romance novel at its core, there are definitely elements that keep you on your toes while reading (and some that may make you cry) The characters have a special place in my heart as they develop flawlessly throughout the novel. Solsken….. my goodness- I want this place to be real in so many ways just so I could wonder it’s immensely beautiful landscape and indulge myself in some milk tea.
Overall, the book was wonderfully executed and hit all the right points in my opinion. I will gladly recommend this book to anyone who will listen.
✨Personal notes about “Our Beautiful Mess”:✨ Fantastic romance novel- contains multiple twists and turns to keep the reader engaged, character development is on point, a bit of spice. I am someone who will devour a good dark romance and not think twice….while this is NOT that- it is your feel good romance and I found myself relating to the characters and their stories more than I thought possible. I LOVE that. If I can develop a connection with a fictional character the way I did with Claire, the author, in my opinion, is one of the best. I can honestly say I will RUN to buy any future releases by B.K. Clark.
Our Beautiful Mess had me up reading until one in the morning because I couldn’t go to bed with that much suspense hanging over me. I was hooked right from the start, largely because I absolutely loved Danny’s point of view and character.
The island of Solsken was so endearing, and I loved the found-family aspect and how everyone on this small island embraces one another. This was the first romantic suspense book I’ve ever read, and it definitely won’t be my last nor will it be the last book I pick up by BK Clark. I would absolutely love to see what happens to some of my favorite side characters in their own standalone novels.
ARC READER Oh this book was good!!! I loved the characters, a dominant but feminist male and a loving strong woman 10/10!!!! The story was AMAZING! I loved that it had so many turns and it wasn’t boring at all!
There wasn’t a lot of spice but there was a tension that really made it feel steamy. 🎀 The only downside for me is that I’m Swedish myself and I didn’t really find that it was so much “true” to our culture but more stereotypical but I totally understand that’s usually how people see Swedish people. (It was something I caught on to only because I’m Swedish) Also I usually don’t like books that are written with an omniscient perspective but it honestly worked out great here. Very well written.
Overall this book had everything tension, thriller, interesting characters, excitement and romance and I 100% recommend to read!! 🩷🎀
The PASSION. The CHARACTERS. The PLOT. The BANTER. The FEELINGS. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It had it all. I wanted to reach into the pages and shake the characters hands for putting on such a good show, but then I remembered it was written by one person.
BK Clark’s debut romance sets a high standard for her career, but seeing the talent relevant in this novel, I know we’re in good hands and I can’t wait to see what she cooks up next.
Do yourself a favor and get this book. It will make you laugh, cry, get spooked, and root for a romance that is just perfection.
This book truly was beautiful! It was a nice romance. It really showed the true fears people can have in a relationship especially with a lot of past things that can cause turmoil. Great job on this book! I look forward to more.
I enjoyed this romantic suspense so much that it only took me four days to read it instead of two weeks.
The main characters—Danny and Claire a/k/a Maddelyn—are hesitant to make a connection and it doesn’t help when you’ve been bruised by a failed marriage. These two are seeking solace in the same location but both are headed in different emotional directions. Danny wants to protect his heart. Claire wants independence and a freedom she’s been stifled to explore as a child.
I love the ongoing theme of family in this novel. The setting is a cold and isolated island where everyone knows everyone and periodically come together for the pure enjoyment of each other’s company. And this theme never waivers.
On a scale of 1-10, the sexual content is an 8, so this is not for teenagers. There’s swearing, which I hate! There are a lot of creative ways to show anger and shock without the foul language. Yes, fiction should mimic real-life, but writers must remember that in our volatile world, readers want an escape from the everyday madness.
What’s distracting about this book is B. K. Clark’s lack of clarity. I strongly feel had she read the book out loud right before publishing, she would have caught the missteps in her writing. But don’t let this keep you from purchasing and reading the book. It’s still worth the read.
The other thing I found that was annoying was the name of some of the characters. Mattie, Jacob Matthews, and Officer Murphy. Writers sometimes overlook the confusion caused when character’s names either sound the same or begin with the same alphabet. They also tend to forget to remind the reader the purpose and relationship of a minor character to the story. This is extremely important because I forgot the names of Finlay’s buddies and got confused later in the story. This could have been simply solved by reminding the reader of their relationship to Finlay.
I wished B. K. Clark had put a little more meat on the relationship between Emilie and Finlay. Poor Emilie just didn’t catch on until the end. Ian, Danny’s best friend, was a nice sidekick. I loved him, loved their camaraderie, loved his loyalty.
Our Beautiful Mess has depth, all the feels, and even a bit of eeriness.
First of all, I want to thank the author, BK Clark for giving me the opportunity to read Our Beautiful Mess as an ARC!
This book…I was absolutely IMMERSED in this story. I would forget where I was reading this, and I definitely wish the island of Solsken was a real place because I want to live there! 😭
This is a romance novel at its core, but that being said, what I loved the most about it was that there is absolutely something for everyone! Romance, suspense, a little bit of a paranormal vibe, and the tension… oof. 😅 I would say there is some spice, but it’s very mild.
In this novel you will meet Danny, who owns a bar on the island of Solsken. Danny was in a short “marriage” with the wrong person and is trying to get his life back together in his home town.
You will also meet Madelynn (Claire), who is a famous writer of horror novels. She ventures to the island of Solsken as a way to escape for a while and work on her writing.
Danny and Claire meet in an airport bar and have quite a conversation…then they end up on the same plane. What happens next is an unraveling of a beautiful love story, with some demons lurking from each of their pasts.
Will they be able to overcome their fears and learn how to be together? I encourage you to read it yourself and find out!
Thank you, BK Clark, for allowing me to read your debut novel as an ARC! What a fun and suspenseful read! I’m not sure what I was expecting when I dove into the story, but it had way more suspense than I was prepared for. It was beautiful. I loved the characters: a strong FMC, a grumpy MMC, and endearing side characters. I felt like a part of the family at Solsken and didn’t want to leave. I’m invested and would definitely love to read a story about Ian.
The slow burn and tension between Claire and Danny was delicious. Claire’s trauma was evident early on, which made me incredibly nervous for what was to come. There were so many twists and turns. Just when I thought I could take a break from reading and do life (cook dinner, start laundry, etc) something else would happen in the story, preventing me from putting it down. There definitely were gasps and loud exclamations coming from me as well.
Vikings? Check. Romance? Check. Fabulous setting and storytelling? Check. Check. Seriously, I love, love, LOVE this story and these characters. So good.
I'm not sure how one writes cozy suspense, but Clark managed to balance the two beautifully! I am dying to visit that little island and hang out in Danny's tavern with all of the characters (minus the villain, obvs). The FMC was quirky, layered, and believable. The MMC was swoon-worthy and his story hurt my heart. I hope to read more of this author's work soon!
This story was so easy to get hooked on. From the first chapters, I was taken by Danny, a handsome tattooed man with a broken heart, and Claire, the mysterious widowed writer.
They meet in an airport bar, but Danny wants nothing to do with beautiful women. Yet they find themselves seated on the plane headed for the island of Solsken, Danny’s home, where Claire hopes to seek refuge and write for the next few months.
Danny has a wonderful group of friends and family that help run his pub, especially his cousin Emelie and the Scotsman, Ian, who is like a brother to him. Others on the island make the community tight-knit and give a warm family feeling. The banter between the characters is playful and teasing but also gets quite serious. There is a slow, easy romance burning between Danny and Claire. Although both are broken people and need to learn to trust again, Danny’s friends are helping to push things along.
Just when I thought this was going to be a romantic story about broken-hearted people finding love again - things take a turn.
People from their pasts and chilling events occur that add suspense to the story, giving it a dark, almost gothic feel. Someone is out to ruin Claire, and when she thinks she is safe and may have found love - everyone she cares about may be in danger.
I was so surprised at how dramatic and emotional this story was. I adored the sense of community and the rugged atmosphere of this windswept island. If you’re looking for romantic suspense, this is one you won’t want to put down.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @bkclarkauthor for a spot on tour and a gifted book.
I received an ARC of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved the mix of thriller and romance/rom com. First of all, thanks for bringing me back into my Vikings are HOT era, because daaaaang—Danny is all the things—hot, tall, muscular, manly, can cook, has a big heart, playful, flirty, will do anything for his family and friends, and also is healing from his divorce. Yum. Then we have the timeless and unique Claire with a secret of her own—I love the idea of her vulnerability, her creativity, her love and care, and her wardrobe—my god her wardrobe!
This one has it all—tension for days, banter, trauma and healing, great friends, slow burn, forced proximity, friends to lovers, miscommunications, hilarious moments, and more compounded by the paranormal/mystery/thriller element, a myriad of dangers, a wildly unique island interwoven with both Scottish and Swedish culture and heritage, and a motley cast of such fun and lovely people—including our priest to be yet troubled Ian, are feminist and all around baddie Emilie, and our coming into his own Fin.
I adored this one, couldn’t get enough, just wanted more, and wouldn’t mind living in a place like Solsken, especially if a man like Danny came right along with it! Lucky Claire! Plus, now I need some kanelbullar, or Swedish cinnamon rolls. Stat!
Wow, what a story! I don’t usually read Romance novels, but after reading “Our Beautiful Mess”, I’ll be first in line for B.K. Clark’s next book.
This novel is a masterclass in the fusion of Romance and Suspense, seamlessly blending passion with pulse-pounding thrills. My heart raced as Clark delivered plot twist after plot twist. I literally could not put it down!
From the first page, I was hooked. The characters are lovable and layered, each with their own hidden depths and motivations. The dialogue is witty. The romance is a tantalizing slow burn, always leaving you wanting more- never cheesy or forced. The romantic scenes have just the right amount of spiciness (which candidly I appreciate, as I blush easily). The atmospheric and cozy setting of the isolated and picturesque island of Solsken on the edge of winter draws you right in, beckoning you to sit by the fire with a cup of Royal Milk Tea.
It’s a Romance, yes. But at its core, it's a story about love in all its forms – romantic love, self love, familial love, and the love between friends. It's about the sacrifices we make for those we care about, the strength we find in the face of adversity, and the realization that we are worthy of love, ourselves.
There are three reasons that I really enjoyed this read.
The first one is that even though this is a romantic suspense read there is also witty banter between one of the main characters (Danny) and his best friend, Ian.
The second reason are the secondary characters. For example, Ian, Danny’s best friend, is going to seminary school. Danny’s cousin, Emelie, helps in the restaurant and has a big personality.
The third reason is all of the characters are really well developed. I felt like each person in this book from the main characters to the townspeople who make only small appearances all have a story that is shared.
The plot itself is interesting. It takes place on an island named Solsken. Claire is a horror writer that has come to the island to feel a sense of independence after living a very sheltered life. Danny has come back to the island after a truly disastrous one month marriage. Claire begins to experience what feels like a haunting as her past seems to be following her.
The romance portion is slow burn and the suspense part is peeled away slowly. I also liked the completeness of the conclusion.
Our Beautiful Mess turned me into an absolute beautiful mess. Claire, needing to get away from the stress of her life and the death of someone close to her, boards a plan for Solsken to isolate herself at a rented cottage for the winter to write. At an airport bar and during the flight she finds herself in the company of Danny - a native of Solsken and local tavern owner.
When Claire arrives at her dwelling to find a major disappointment the spiraling begins. Soon after she is also haunted by the ghost of her dead loved one and begins to feel scared and endangered. Ironically, Danny comes to the rescue along with his blood and made family Ian (an aspiring priest with a shady past), Emelie (a spitfire that you don't want to mess with), and Finn (the awkward sidekick with a thing for Emelie).
When the danger becomes more real, the people of Solsken band together to aid Claire. In a plot twist that will shake all involved - Danny will be brought to his knees, Ian will find his purpose, Finn will find his strength, and Emelie will...well, be Emelie.
This atmospheric and suspenseful love story weaves romance, secrets, and mystery into a captivating tale of second chances. Claire, a reserved writer fleeing her past and family expectations, moves to the picturesque island of Solsken to rediscover herself. Her journey is disrupted when she crosses paths with Danny, a man struggling to rebuild his life after heartbreak and betrayal. What begins as a wary attraction soon becomes entangled with whispers of danger, eerie occurrences, and a blood-written threat that pushes Claire and Danny into a tangled web of emotions, secrets, and suspense. Both characters are deeply layered, their emotional scars and guarded walls making their connection raw, real, and deeply satisfying. This story masterfully balances romance and tension, with beautiful descriptions of Solsken's setting, character-driven storytelling, and gripping suspense. Readers will be captivated by the chemistry between Claire and Danny as they navigate their fears, their secrets, and their desires, all while confronting the shadows of their pasts.
This story follows Claire, a sheltered gothic horror novelist seeking escape, and Daniel, a surly bartender nursing his emotional wounds. Set against the backdrop of a remote, fictional Swedish island, Claire and Daniel navigate their growing attraction as something from Claire's past threatens to destroy their newfound happiness.
Misunderstandings and external forces keep the couple apart and the suspense element adds tension and raises the stakes. With complex, relatable characters who have trauma that is explored with sensitivity and depth, their struggles make their journey toward each other all the more poignant. A cast of supporting characters, from Daniel's loyal best friend Ian to the eccentric islanders, adds humor and heart to the story.
A captivating tale about overcoming past wounds and learning to love and trust again, Our Beautiful Mess is an emotionally satisfying read for fans of romantic suspense within intricately crafted worlds.
Danny’s life is unraveling on a flight home when he first encounters Claire, a kind stranger. Claire is running from a past she’s trying to both reconcile and leave behind. As Claire stumbles her way around Danny’s home island and the pair grow closer, each’s figurative and literal demons threaten to tear them apart.
BK Clark’s Our Beautiful Mess is a charming and engaging story of honor, friendship, and what it means to find home in another person. Her dialogue jumps off the pages and makes you laugh and tear up, and the story of Claire, Danny, Ian, and a fantastic cast of well-developed characters will make you feel like you’re hanging out at the coolest pub on the northern island of Solsken.
This book is so many wonderful things- mystery, love story, and suspense. Clark’s voice is fresh and funny, and her writing is artfully crafted and spot-on. Highly recommend this debut novel by an incredible writer.
BK Clark writes an impeccable story. The vast, stunning setting of the picturesque island of Solsken, lent itself to romance right off the bat. I loved both Claire and Danny’s tender and vulnerable yet sassy characters—especially when they were together. BK Clark did such a great job creating well-developed characters with a slow build for their growing attraction to each other that kept me in such a state of excitement and anticipation. I loved their support networks and the Swedish culture that surrounded the storyline as well. The additional part of the storyline with the creepy messages and vandalism really kept me reading and guessing how Claire would get to escape her haunting past. After building the story in a perfect arc, the story’s ending was so satisfying and sweet. I loved the way BK Clark gave each character their turn in the limelight and gave each of them some closure before the book ended.
Our Beautiful Mess is so skillfully written that it’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel! This heartwarming love story between two wounded souls with fascinating backstories drew me in on the first page and captivated me right until the end with the suspense and plot twists—I couldn’t put it down!! I loved this book especially for the complexity of the characters—every single one of them, even the minor characters were interesting enough that I wanted to know their stories. I loved the themes: the healing power of love, friends that are family and the strength of community shine throughout this novel. The story is set on the make believe island of Solsken, a Scottish-Viking island with a cohesive community that I wish was a real place. If you love a heartwarming, suspenseful story with witty banter and unique characters in a rugged setting, you have to read this book!
This was a debut?! 😲 I can't believe it even after reading, this feels like a seasoned author. Well done B.K.!
This book has a bit of everything. Romance, suspense, tension, grumpiness, found family, two flawed MCs who help each other be "put back together", and so much more.
I felt so bad for Claire and the sheltering she had as a child and in her marriage. After losing her husband, she had a tough time letting others in and kind of reading social cues. Danny, he's so grumpy (but an oh so swoony Viking man 😉) and he has good reason (looking at his train wreck of an ex wife). I love the very hard road they go down to find each other and the comfort and love that they both deserve.
This is a book that made me feel I wanted to immediately read it again and I will definitely be watching this author for more!!
This is a surprisingly suspenseful, beautifully crafted novel! The story follows Danny and Claire, two people healing from past hurts, as they find love again. Their journey is especially relatable for anyone who's experienced heartbreak.
Clark's beautiful writing brings the cold, sometimes spooky setting to life, balanced perfectly by the warmth of the characters. The diverse cast, including standouts like Emilie and Ian, adds depth and richness to the story. I particularly enjoyed the glimpses into Swedish culture.
What starts as a cozy return-home tale transforms into a thrilling ride that kept me guessing throughout the second half. The setting itself becomes a character, making you feel the chill as you read.
A little Unexpected Excellent first novel by this author. The novel and the story that slowly reveals itself makes the book more than a little unexpected. It is not a romance. It is a love story with its share of suspense and melodrama as too often happens in life. Presenting characters of many dimensions, shallow, deep, mean-spirited, brave and so many other emotions connects with the reader. What makes you think is the way the author presents the different sides of people. People are not always as they appear and the consequences of this can be far reaching and heart breaking as we discover as we journey with both leads to finally finding the happy ending they deserve. Great first effort and look forward to more.
I'd first like to mention how incredibly beautiful this book is. The dust jacket and the hardcover are absolutely exquisite. The story is captivating and so well-written that it's hard to believe this a debut. Danny and Claire are both hurting, yet have amazing chemistry, and their slow burn romance is perfection. I especially enjoyed the friendship between Danny and Ian and the way they bantered. We should all have a friend like Ian. The island of Solsken is described in such a way that I felt like I'd been there and I adored the small town vibe of it. With plenty of intriguing twists to the plotline this is a book that you won't want to put down and I'm excited to what this author comes up with next.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
BK Clark’s Our Beautiful Mess is a beautifully layered tale of love, healing, and mystery. Through the journeys of Danny and Claire, the story captures what it means to confront the past while searching for hope and connection.
Clark’s writing is vivid and atmospheric, bringing Solsken’s chilly charm to life. The characters feel authentic, with relatable struggles and emotional depth that make their bond compelling. A perfect blend of romance, suspense, and moments of humor keeps the pages turning.
This novel is both heartwarming and thrilling, with unexpected twists that elevate it beyond a typical love story. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys emotional, character-driven tales with a dash of mystery.
I want to live in this book. I want to take the words that this author has written and wrap them around my soul and never let them leave. The dual POV, the forced proximity, the relationships/friendships on the island, and the way the grief is written. Just...I'm not great at reviews. But I am so thankful that I was able to get an early copy of this book. Because it has been all I've thought about. There's so many quotes I want to add here and I probably will come back to do so.
In her debut novel, BK proves why she will be a force to reckoned with, in the literary world. She writes with a soul and passion that makes you wonder how this is her debut novel.
If romance is what you're looking for, but smut isn't what you seek? Look no further. Because in OBM, the steam is so piping, it'll melt your face off. The banter, the tension, the dialogue.
I feel like I need 12 paragraphs to accurately depict my feelings of this book and what these characters mean to me. I need more from BK and I need it immediately.
