Janet Farrar, along with Stewart, is author of many books on witchcraft, and a well known witch who has appeared frequently in the media. She currently lives in Ireland and regularly tours the U.S.A. giving lectures and workshops.

I first became acquainted with authors Janet and Stewart Farrar in the early 90s. I was young then—only about 21 years old—when my much wiser and older friend who has since passed on introduced me to our new hangout: the herb shop. What I named it was in fact a misnomer because it was in all reality an old crone’s shop where all the witches did their weekly shopping long before the internet became a “thing.”

I naturally gravitated to the book section, and this is where I found the Farrars’ “A Witches’ Bible.” I decided that I needed to read their other works as well, so I read the duo’s “Spells and How They Work.” This book is a compilation of wide-ranging information that today could be classified as an introductory manual to spell casting. What I really love about this book is the authors’ humor. In fact, they seemed as surprised as I was when they discovered that “Janet’ was considered by some to be a witches name!

This is a good beginner’s overview of spell casting that includes the necessary info on personal responsibility and ethics. They’re clear and entertaining writers.

Excellent primer not only about how Magick works, but also about Magick itself. There are many great examples of spells and of course being the Farrars it is extremely well-written. Highly recommended to anyone interested in spell work.

A good primer for those who have read other primers. Lots of basics coverage, with some new and at times questionable information. Would recommend for beginners willing to put in extra secondary research.
