Whatever It Takes

Rate this book
Fans of Cindy Gerard and Jaci Burton will love the next thrilling novel in Dixie Lee Brown's suspenseful Trust No One series…

Assassin Alex Morgan will do anything to save an innocent life—especially if it means rescuing a child from a hell like the one she endured.

But going undercover as husband and wife, with none other than the disarmingly sexy Detective Nate Sanders, may be a little more togetherness than she can handle. She's used to working alone, and no man is going to change that—not even a man who makes her heart pound and her defenses crumble with just a touch

Nate has dodged more than a few bullets over the years, but fighting his attraction for Alex may be the bullet that does him in. Still, Nate's determined to help her find the missing kid. There's no doubt in his mind that they're walking straight into danger, but Nate's willing to face anything if it means protecting Alex. She might have been on her own once, but Nate has one more mission: to stay by her side—forever.

** Forgive me. This is a long one but I loved it so much and can't do a short review. :) **
Ever since I read Dixie Lee Brown's previous book, If You Only Knew, I was itching to get my hands on Nate's book. For those of you that know me, I have a slight thing for men in uniform-specifically cops since I have one of my own at home. Oh! And let's not forget the man has one of my FAVORITE cars...a classic Ford Mustang. Loved those cars since I was a kid. (Thank you Daddy!) I would pant after Nate just for his car alone! Lol. Anyway, Ms. Dixie had me really intrigued with Nate and had my wheels turning when it came to Alex. I really couldn't be happier with their book!

We felt the immediate push and pull of Nate and Alex's feelings, sexual energy, intrigue...or whatever it is you want to call what zipped between the two of them in If You Only Knew. I knew the possibilities were endless on where it could go. We find out that some really messed up (when I say messed up, it's more like some serious f-ed up stuff) happened to Alex in the past, so she is slightly awkward at times but she is a force to be reckoned with. Suffering from a serious case of PTSD, (and not the military type we are used to reading which was very refreshing and a nice reminder that not everyone who has PTSD was previously in the military) she has flashbacks and sometimes hears the voice of her tormentor. And if an innocent is in a dangerous situation that they seem to have no way out of, Alex gets crazy dangerous...at least for the bad guys. But under that layer of insecurities and warped sense of right and wrong, she has a giant heart of gold. She fights for the underdog with everything she has. There is no half-way with her. This doesn't happen very often, but I think I was more in love with Alex than with Nate. For her to go through what she did and come out the other side of it with a tainted view of some things but still fighting the good fight, this is one strong chick. I loved everything about her. Everything.

And Nate was pretty much right up there in my character loving. Even without the Mustang boost, he was such a great hero. I'm so used to reading alpha males who can be such giant pricks at times with all their my way or the highway attitude and it gets old real quick when that's all you seem to be reading. I loved that Nate knew when to push Alex and when to let her have the space she needed to feel comfortable. And he completely melted my heart with how open and honest he made his feelings known. That takes a lot of guts and confidence with yourself to do that. There are some heroes that are written like this but we don't see it all that often. I know I'm used to reading the guy who keeps how he's really feeling inside or just lets known a few things but otherwise plays his cards close to his chest. But not Nate. He just seemed that much stronger in my eyes because he wasn't second guessing himself and was still a badass when it came down to it. Sexy, sexy man. Yum!!

The action in the story was really great. At one point I was trying to figure out which bad guy was gun them down (and not in a confusing way but more of a trying to play detective and figure it out sort of way). We had three players vying for that spot. In the end, it was a crazy, crazy situation that had me wanting to punch through the pages to stab one of the bad guys myself. (Yes, him more than the others. Read it and you'll probably know which one I wanted to take down.) And the possibilities of the next book are just screaming that it's going to be a great book. I don't know where I'm going to find the patience to wait for the next one. It's going to be so good!

Danger and Excitement around every corner! WHATEVER IT TAKES is a steady mix of suspense and romance that keeps you wanting more.

I LOVE Alex....there...I said it...She rocked this book...and Nate's world in the process. I have to sat, I think she is hands down my favorite Trust No One heroine. She didn't need a man to save her, she kicked ass all on her own.

And Nate...swoon...I fell for Nate while reading IF YOU ONLY KNEW and he certainly knew how to be a true "hero" in his own book...Sexy, Smart and Smokin...what a combination.

Always fun to see the characters from the past releases in the series, and to meet some new characters as well. Dixie rocks a Romance Suspense!

This being the 4th book in the series, I felt Ms Brown kept it just as interesting as the first book. Nate and Alex seemed like a good fit. And all the angst they went thru (while some was a little predictable) it kept me reading and enjoying the story thru to the end. Would recommend to others who enjoy romance and action!

If you read the third book in this series, If Only You Knew, like me, you probably have been looking forward to Nate and Alex’s story because they don’t seem to get off on the right footing when they meet in the latter part of the book, and the sparks between them have already started to fly! Now, in this fourth installment that extends the plot from book three, Whatever It Takes features the continuation of Nate and Alex’s relationship. And I’ll go ahead and say right now Brown does not disappoint. Whatever it Takes has all the excitement, thrills and an amorous romance that I’ve come to expect in this series.

The book picks up the plot several months later in the story’s timeline. A five-year-old boy, Marco, was kidnapped in the last book and used as leverage by a rogue FBI agent to manipulate the boy’s mother into cooperating with him in his illicit schemes. Now, after months of searching, Joe’s team has a strong lead on the human trafficker who has him, and time is of the essence in getting the boy out of the hands of Diego Vasquez. As the team prepares a plan to get Marco back to his mother, Alex is sent to locate undercover detective, Nate Sanders to assist in the rescue mission.

When Alex does find Nate, their encounter is anything but typical, and it is one of the best scenes in the book because of its intense action and suspense. In the follow-up scene it’s evident their overt antagonism toward each other is really just a façade to mask the sexual tension brimming between them. Nate has been warned about Alex’s instability, “…she was lethal, unpredictable, and apt to respond with violent intent at the first sign of perceived danger.” Yet, even knowing this about her and finally seeing her in action, Nate’s attraction only increases. He is drawn to the fiery, tough-as-nails, smart-mouthed beauty, and although Alex is perfectly capable of taking care of herself, ironically Nate has a need to protect her. Even though he doesn’t know her very well, he can immediately sense the scared, vulnerable woman hidden behind the hardened mercenary who is exceptional and impressive in her knife wielding skills.

 photo knifetothroat_zps10765988.jpg

Alex has had a traumatic past and her emotional growth has been stunted by the abuse she has suffered. She’s aloof and distrustful of others, except for Joe and her teammates. Alex is still haunted by her captivity and Nate has to work hard for every step he takes to get close to her.

The title of the book, Whatever It Takes is fitting for the progression of their relationship. Their constant verbal sparring which eventually leads to a tender but sensual romance is well-worth the read.

The title also connects to Alex and her unwavering attempt to save Marco from the ugly future that awaits him if the team fails to rescue him. Because of what happened to her, she is personally invested in seeing this boy freed, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him back, even knowing her role in the rescue places her in imminent danger and has the potential to take her right back to the torment she vowed never to suffer again. Brown does a really good job in getting into the mindset of someone who has suffered severe emotional damage, and I’m impressed with how well she helps us understand what it’s like to carry this baggage around with her every single day.

Although the rescue mission is well-planned, the events that follow are unpredictable and suspenseful, and just when you thing the worst is over, the stakes for this couple’s survival become even higher.

I’ll admit at times, I became frustrated with Alex’s behavior. Nate tries to prove over and over to her that he cares about her and he’s in for the duration, even though Alex pushes him away every time they begin to make progress. Nate’s character is wonderful and even though Alex tells him to stay away because she’s crazy and fears that she’ll hurt him, Nate believes and trusts her. His feelings are always transparent:

“If you’re going to spend more time around me, and I hope you will, you should be prepared because I look for the good in people and I’m likely to say something nice at any moment. I’m a complete sap,and I get all emotional at the drop of a hat. I want you to know how I feel.”

Nate is irresistible, and his openness is refreshing. I just wish it didn’t take so long for Alex to realize he is willing to accept her just as she is. When she tells him she wishes she were normal, I love his reply that “normal is overrated.”

Now I’m ready for Jimmy’s story. He’s one of Alex’s teammates and one of the few she connects with because both suffer from PTSD. In the next mission, Jimmy will be taking the lead and most likely working solo since as a former SEAL, he’s a deadly weapon, without or without a gun. The plot continues as Jimmy sets out to find Marco’s mother, who has mysteriously disappeared.

Although Whatever it Takes can be read as a stand-alone since Brown provides enough detail to explain how Marco and his mother came to be separated, I recommend reading the third installment first. While others may be fine with reading a summary of past events connected to the ongoing plot, I prefer to experience the entirety of a story rather than relying on a re-cap of the what happened before. All in all, Whatever It Takes is a very good romantic suspense.

Even though WHATEVER IT TAKES is the 4th book in the Trust No One series, and I have not read any of the previous books, this novel had me hooked from the very beginning. It did a great job of quickly rehashing Alex and Nate's first run in, which occurred in the previous novel, and introducing us to the the rest of the team in a way that provided just the right amount of information without slowing down the action.

Alex is an incredibly brave and resilient woman. Having been taken from her home as a child and subjected to drugging, brainwashing and other barbarities, Alex somehow comes out the other side vowing to help and protect others. Her PTSD and violent outbursts make her, and sometimes those around her, feel as if she doesn't always have full control of her mind or actions. But Nate Sanders is somehow able to calm her and quiet the awful voice of her tormentor. In his arms her awful nightmares are kept at bay and she finally experiences desires which she never thought could possibly interest her.

Nate is able to look beyond the damage that Alex sees at irreparable, to the core of strength inside of her. He sticks with her, even when her defenses are up or when her mind goes to that quiet place, fueled by instinct and violence. And for the first time, she wants more than the life filled with savagery and self-recrimination that she's always known. She's never relied on anyone before and it's definitely not something that comes easy to her. But as the lines between their faux-marriage and their real romance start to blur, Alex finds herself trusting Nate to have her back.

The road to love is definitely not smooth for Alex and Nate. Between her feelings of unworthiness, fears which cause her to push Nate away and the bevy of criminals that want them both dead, these two hardly get a moment to relax. But they definitely find time to have some sweet and sexy moments together, as much as they try to resist each other.

This was such an emotionally turbulent story. WHATEVER IT TAKES does not have flat, cookie-cutter characters or a simple, straightforward romance. Nate and Alex have experienced horrible, life-changing trauma, the kind that leaves an indelible imprint on the soul. Thanks to the Dixie Lee Brown, we get to watch Alex and Nate work their way through their own emotional labyrinths to get to a place where they value themselves and can no longer deny their rightness for each other. This was my first experience with the series and the author but I would definitely be interested in reading some more books in the series!

Ah, I get all excited when I read an excellent story and get ready to write the review!
I wish I had caught this series before, I absolutely love the tone of this author. The whole story is a perfect blend of action, love, tragedy, and humor. I truly enjoyed it!
Nate and Alex's love story is such beautiful tale. The tragedy and horror of Alex's past, and nearly constant reminder of the inhumane treatment Alex suffered is in between them, but their fight for the chance for a relationship. The way Nate handles Alex's brokenness, his understanding towards her wounds, it is heartbreaking and so adorable. There are so many *swoon worthy* scenes in this story, but the fishing trip must be one of my favorites.
The action is explosive and fiery. It is drizzled through the story, and kept me on my toes. With several unexpected surprises in the plot, there's no possibility that I could have lost interest in the story at any point.
Absolutely exhilarating action packed romance ~ Five spoons!

'Whatever It Takes' is the fourth in Dixie's Trust No One series, and at first, I thought I might have to go back and read the whole series from the beginning. However, it can easily be read without having to go back as the book is action-packed from Chapter 1 - it sucked me right in! Detective Nate Sanders and Alex Morgan are both extremely likeable characters; Dixie's complex hero and heroine are enveloped by a captivating plot, and I didn't want to put the book down! Nate's charm and emotional strength complement Alex's extremely complicated past; by the end of the book, I couldn't help but want a Nate Sanders of my own! The chemistry Dixie gives these two is just amazing, and there is plenty of heat. Now, I've decided I have to go back and read Dixie's others in this series - hot, ex-military/cop guys coupled with strong heroines? I can't wait to read the whole series!

Danger All Around

Alex and Nate's story did not disappoint. It had action, danger and passion. Hate is a cop who used to be Ty's partner. Nate met Alex in Ty's story. She insulted his Mustang and she crashed it in order to save his life. Now his life is about to be saved in more ways than one. This is action packed. Can Nate save Alex emotionally and physically?

I could not give Whatever It Takes 5 stars because there were some grammatical errors. I really wanted a more well rounded ending for these two. And there is something that has not sat well with me in this series and that is... for the last two stories we still do not know the gender or name of Joe and Cara's baby. The baby is mentioned a couple of times and still no name or gender.

Next is Jim's story. I hope we get answers.

This is the 4th book in the series and begins a couple of months after the end of If You Only Knew. This book centers around Nate and Alex who were introduced in If You Only Knew where they meet for the first time and don’t start off on the right track. In If You Only Knew a five year old boy was kidnapped to blackmail his mother into helping the bad guys. This is all basically re-capped in this book. In this book Joe’s team has a lead on the human trafficker, Diego Vasquez who has the boy. Alex is sent undercover as Nate’s wife to assist in the rescue mission.
My favorite part of the book was the first few chapters where Alex meets up with Nate again. It was a great beginning and the characters seem strong and interesting with a lot of sexual tension between them. Unfortunately, the book looses steam after the opening.

Alex is so damaged that you can’t help but become frustrated with her behavior. She is convinced that she is crazy and constantly pushes Nate away, then has sex with him and then pushes him away again. First off, I didn’t buy the sex scenes from a woman who was so abused previously. I also couldn’t see what Nate saw in Alex to put up with her continual “whiplash” behavior.
There were also to many storylines in this book. Diego wasn’t the only bad guy and so there were a lot of characters whose motivations had to be explained. Then there was the recap of book 3 and the recap of previous characters and their history. The explaining of past characters, current character motivations and the emotional baggage never seemed to stop and was quite frankly boring.

Then there were the unrealistic parts of the book. I get it, Alex is a badass with a knife but really how many times can you face multiple bad guys with guns and manage to disarm them and barely get hurt at all yourself. Then of course there are the moments when they have been attacked by multiple bad guys in one day but they either roast hot dogs or go swimming.
The plot didn’t even come to a conclusion since Marco the kidnapped boy wasn’t reunited with his mother (I assume this will be the next book).
Overall, two much explaining, unrealistic scenes and characters and on top of that I didn’t really like Alex.

Best of the series in my opinion. Alex has had a terrible life, used and abused by an Asian sadist in Hong Kong. Her memory has been ripped away by mind-altering drugs. She has found safety at Joe compound in Kalispell. However, here comes Ty's former partner, Nate Sanders, to spoil Alex's safety - oops no, spoil her tranquility. And why? He's crazy about her. She is uncomfortable with the feelings she has for him, too.

Nate was left his home by an older gentleman he called Uncle. Unfortunately, there are some unknown factors about him and some unsavory characters keep visiting Nate to ascertain what he knows. Alex is caught up in the struggle and is torn between going back to her old ways of never letting anyone in, and helping Nate because she has feelings for him too. Her past comes back to get in the way of their happiness, too. Before it's over, they'll both have to make some major changes. Worth the ride.

This is my first Dixie Brown novel. Diving into the middle of a series, I had no problems getting into this story. I loved Alex's damaged soul and truly felt her heartache from her tragic past. She was everything I love in a female Lead. Strong on the outside and able to kick ass when needed. Her surprise rescue of Nate in the beginning was hot and he didn't stand a chance against this female who caught his eye before, doing what she does with a knife. Nate was hot, hot, hot! When the premise of the story was set and the two had to go undercover as husband and wife, I couldn't help but giggle because lets face it. That scenario makes for wild ride and I was excited to see Alex fall for Nate. I mean who wouldn't! Nate was every girls dream. I will definitely be reading this series from the beginning. I enjoyed Dixie's writing style and look forward to more from her.

Whatever It Takes is another great book by Dixie Lee Brown! This is the third book of the Trust No One series that I have read and so far it is my favorite. It is very well written and I enjoyed reading every page in this book.
Alex and Nate have to keep on the watch for not one but two bad guys. Trying to figure out their feelings for each other and watching each other’s back while watching out for either of these guys or their hired henchmen make this a very event happening book. I had to laugh at parts and went awww at others while reading this book. I absolutely loved it and will be recommending it to others!

Dixie Lee Brown has done it again! The suspense kept me flipping through the pages and the romantic tension--this time between Detective Nate Sanders and Alex from book 3--made me want to meet this guy. The author connects with these characters on a deep emotional level, making for a rich and satisfying read. If you love romantic suspense, this series doesn't disappoint!
