Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Keenan Morris was a first-generation college graduate, who did not always intend to enter the finance and investing industry. In fact, he graduated with honors from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a degree in the health sciences. However, like many graduates, Keenan not only left school with a degree but also with a lot of student loans and debt.

After graduation, he quickly learned that most companies were unwilling to hire for more than low-paying entry-level positions. Eventually, out of necessity, he was forced to take an office job in a field completely unrelated to his college degree. After years of feeling stuck behind a desk, he decided that something had to change in his life. He began his financial career immediately after earning his
investment and securities licenses. Since then, Keenan has transitioned from maximizing the profits of a Fortune 500 corporation to being a trusted voice of
security in the financial industry.

With over a decade of both personal and professional financial experience, Keenan is the founder and CEO of Level Up Consultants, which coaches investors, business owners, and entrepreneurs on how to grow their assets while minimizing taxes. He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two kids, who share his love of gaming.

Level Up!: Your Strategy Guide to the Game of Investing is an invigorating read, particularly for the passionate video game enthusiast, but equally engrossing for those intrigued by the world of investing. The exceptional and innovative content within its pages illuminates the intricate complexities of investing, offering an unmatched perspective not commonly found in most finance and investment literature. Penned by Keenan Morris and other astute contributors, the book employs an inventive writing style that seamlessly merges the fantastical world of gaming with the pragmatic realm of business investment.

The core message of this transformative book can be encapsulated by its title— a compelling invitation to 'level up', offering readers the chance to enrich their mindset, bolster their financial acumen, and elevate their investment strategies to professional levels. The authors masterfully weave together the artistry of gaming with the rigor of business investment through engaging and relatable analogies that infuse gravity into otherwise complex subjects.

One might initially question the link between video gaming and wealth accumulation through investments. However, the authors swiftly dispel any doubts, articulating a fascinating correlation between the two domains. From the outset, they highlight shared aspects, including rules, strategies, secret weapons, adversaries, and achievements, while further delving into the intriguing contrasts and how gaming metaphors can be instrumental in understanding investment principles. The insights provided by Morris and his co-authors extend beyond mere investment shortcuts, exposing readers to real-world wisdom not typically found in conventional classrooms.

The book is divided into two substantive parts, with the first part holding a special place in my esteem. Each chapter of Part I resonates with the spirit of a video game, with eight engaging levels spanning from the Prologue (Level 1) to The Endgame (Level 8). These 'levels' provide an inclusive experience for all readers, irrespective of their gaming background. Part I offers invaluable lessons on applying gaming rules to enhance financial health, strategic investment planning, and the necessity for sharpness akin to a seasoned gamer. The discourse on debt management stands out, offering insights that are beneficial for a wider audience beyond aspiring investors. Though I wished for a more extensive discussion on this topic, it nonetheless left an indelible impact. Part II continues the enlightening journey, introducing a new array of thought-provoking topics.

Morris's book is a great read— one that distinguishes itself through its unique blend of colorful graphics, succinct point-form explanations of specific topics, and the author's engaging narrative tone. This book excels in delivering intricate and crucial points with clarity and depth, without overwhelming readers with excessive verbosity. As such, Level Up!: Your Strategy Guide to the Game of Investing emerges as one of the most outstanding resources for any budding investor preparing to embark on their financial journey.

What to do when it’s financial game over.

‘Level Up’ by Keenan Morris (and co-authors) provides an exciting view of investing, using computer gaming analogies to explain economic strategies. At the beginning is the “Start Menu" (table of contents), giving hope that this book will be helpful and fun. For me, the start menu is the most humourous port of this self-help offering. Morris’s thesis is “there are notable positive benefits of playing video games” (which I sadly see daily in the mindless faces of people playing Candy Crush on the underground). With this firmly in mind, I laboured onto Chapter 1, “Title Screen”.

Morris splits the book into two parts, very loosely specific and generic in application. Unfortunately, by the time I had reached Chapter 4, “Arcade Mode”, the style was grating on me. It’s unclear what sort of book Morris is offering: is it a tongue-in-cheek parody of investment? A serious get-rich-quick written for people with a short attention span? A practical textbook for financial success? I am not sure. There are inferences of intellectual and physical challenges manifesting while managing one’s finances (okay, so we’ve all been stressed at some point because of a lack of cash), but it’s not easy to repeatedly pass through “game over” to “ready player one”.

Yet, at its heart, the financial advice seems sound, and there is valuable knowledge to be gained, but there are a few what-if scenarios which I would prefer to see as real case studies (gaming conventions optional). The biggest plus is I’m sure Morris’s style would appeal to Generation Z (and potentially Alpha): these people need the best financial guidance. Perhaps this is the route to giving them easily understood advice—mainly where complex economic constructs are explained in jargon that the average gamer would embrace (while baffling Generation X people like me). Pro-tip: this book discusses credit and debt, credit ratings, risks of investment, compound interest and what to do when it’s game over.

This book is a giveaway win for me. And, I assure you that I won a hidden gem.

So, what is this book about?

Umm, an experienced investor-cum-mentor's insights on individual investment strategy emphasizing "The greatest victory is that which requires no battle". The chapters expose themselves to stages of video games and the topics in those stages are so appropriate that you mingle with those stages. For instance, the introduction tells you about the average initiation age of a gamer, the way game dynamics are associated with investment elements, and the industrial revenue in 2022. The millionaire mentor's superficial observations and advice are analyzed as the game starts with the title screen. Right, it is quite true that a millionaire investor who has never struggled or forgotten his/her financial struggles cannot offer optimized investing advice for the strugglers. Then comes the example of Buffet with an alert that his investment expertise was appropriate in the 40s and 50s. As our gaming stages intensify, we keep learning about the significance of wealth vs income, minimum wage, value-based resolution, the definition of interest, type of credits, discretionary money, credit-based economy, investing types, risk pooling vs taking, and the dreads and hopes of "game over/continue".

What do I love about the book?
The realistic explanation with specific examples. For instance, Myra is well analyzed as an example of a failure vs the athlete's failure. The "character select" part smoothly identifies different investment styles and helps you identify your style. I love how the author alerts on the state-specific property will clauses and (prior-selection) retirement package analysis. You may use CDs as your retirement package too if you calculate rationally.

So, considering "In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes" get ready with your combat styles as recession, inflation, deflation, and other eco-political elements are inevitable.

Gaming language and openness about emotions when investing

This book is a is a remarkable, game-changing masterpiece in the world of personal finance and investing.
The unique approach of using video game analogies to simplify complex financial concepts is nothing short of genius. It turns the daunting world of investing into an exciting adventure that anyone can embark on. This innovative perspective is a breath of fresh air in a genre filled with dry, uninspiring texts.

The book's structure, organized into levels of personal finance, is not just clever but highly effective. It provides a clear roadmap for readers to progress from financial novices to confident investors. Each level covers essential topics, from building a solid financial foundation to tackling investment risks and understanding the power of leverage. It's like a cheat code to winning the game of wealth.

But what sets "Level Up!" apart is its ability to address both the practical and emotional aspects of financial growth. It acknowledges the unique challenges that individuals may face and offers valuable insights on how to overcome them. This emotional support is often missing in traditional finance literature and makes this book even more invaluable.

Keenan Morris's writing style is engaging, relatable, and easy to follow, making the book enjoyable from start to finish. It's not just about acquiring knowledge; it's about gaining the confidence to make informed financial decisions and achieve your goals.

In a world where financial literature can be dry and uninspiring, "Level Up!" shines as a vibrant and practical guide. If you're a beginner or even someone looking to refresh their financial knowledge, this book is your ultimate strategy guide. It's time to level up your financial game and work towards financial freedom. Highly recommended!

Can learning about personal finances and the world of finance in general be fun endeavors? Keenan Morris sure gives these tasks a valiant try in his highly informative and, yes, at times fun book, Level Up: Your Strategy Guide to the Game of Investing.

Level Up has plenty of info in it that savvy investors may already know, but I’m guessing it’s a book in which even these individuals will learn more than a few new tricks and tips.

At the same time, Morris wrote Level Up for those who have little to zero knowledge about how to invest. He writes in a straightforward, practical way with just enough narratives and personalization to give the book surprising zest.

Best and most creative of all, the author links the commonalities of investing with the world of video games, and it actually works. As Morris writes in the intro, “Each has a set of rules, strategies, secret weapons, enemies, and achievements.” In the very next line, however, he conveys the differences between video games and investing, making an excellent case as to why he wrote Level Up in the first place.

Morris lives in California and works in the financial industry. His book covers pretty much everything one needs to know about investing and goes beyond. I, for instance, was interested in the section that talked about creating wills.

The book is interspersed with colorful illustrations of video-game fantasy lands along with chapter intros labeled by their “level” that talk about the intricacies of video games and how they relate to the upcoming material. Smart and well written, Level Up is filled with invaluable advice that is presented in cool and creative ways.

As someone who has managed to build up a decent amount of assets through my own savings and investments, I was on the lookout for a book to recommend to a family member who is just starting out, dealing with a lot of debt, and lacking in personal finance knowledge. While this book has received positive reviews from others, I have some slight reservations about it.

One of the main issues I had with the book is its tone, which at times came across as overly casual which is not really my style when dealing with money. I understand that no book can cater perfectly to every individual's needs, but in this case, I'd prefer a more economics textbook approach to investing. The analytics appear well-researched but I wish there was more mention of economic factors such as unemployment and wage stagnation. However, those may be more advanced subjects than necessary for this guide.

As I mentioned, I am not really familiar with video games. Have I seen the Super Mario movie, sure. But I'm not a gamer by any means. With that said, the gaming analogies are very well used and you don't need to be a "gamer" to understand the information the author is explaining in the text. What I appreciated most is that the author presents the best practices, but also acknowledges that as individuals, we often have our own unique ways of approaching money which is important to acknowledge for success. The book also covers a wide range of topics, debt, savings, wills & trusts, and even touches on life insurance. Consequently, the book is very good, so don't let the video game analogies scare you off.

The book cleverly uses video game analogies, making the complex labyrinth of financial concepts surprisingly approachable. It’s like having a knowledgeable friend guiding you through a virtual financial landscape.

What I particularly appreciated about Level Up is its modern, no-nonsense approach to investing. The book steers clear of the staid, outdated strategies and instead, offers a dynamic, relatable perspective. It’s tailored for today’s market realities, making it a valuable read for anyone looking to understand personal finance in the current era.

Morris takes you on a journey through eight levels of personal finance, transforming a beginner into a confident investor. Each level is meticulously crafted, covering everything from basic account and savings options to navigating the complexities of debt and investment. The book excels in making you feel like you’re progressing in a game, where each stage unlocks new financial wisdom and skills.

However, it’s not without its flaws. The text sizing issue on digital platforms was a minor annoyance, and I noticed a few areas where the editing could have been tighter. Also, while most of the video game analogies hit the mark, a few seemed a bit far-fetched in their application to real-world investing.

Despite these minor issues, Level Up remains an invaluable resource, especially for those new to investing. It’s not just a guide; it's a mentor in a book form, helping you navigate the often-intimidating world of finance with ease and confidence. It’s a must-read for anyone looking to demystify investing and level up their financial game.

Two worlds meeting in one book

Level Up! gives a completely different approach to personal finance and investing.

Many of us picture investors as serious and conservative people, clean-shaven and dressed in a suit, showing off their high brain power and intellect by saying long fancy words in convoluted sentences to explain impossibly complex concepts about macro-economics and interest rates.

On the other hand, when we think of people who play a lot of computer games, our minds drift more towards irresponsible young adults who hang out in messy bedrooms late at night, with traces of chips and spilt soda pop on their keyboards and feeding on congealed day-old pizza straight out the box that still sits next to them the day after it was delivered at the door.

This is why Level Up! is such a novel book as it finds a way to combine those two rather opposite worlds into one. Indeed, investing can be seen as a game, and the rules of finance can be compared to video game analogies. And each time you hit a new financial goal, and achieve a certain rate of return on Investment, it can be considered to be the same as levelling up.

Aside from the fact that it’s a fun concept, what is even more impressive is that the rules that are explained by Keenan Moris actually work.

A great steppingstone for anyone wanting to get their toes into investing, but don’t know where to start.

Here’s how I know I’m reading a great book so far:

“Many people look to imitate the routines and habits of the extremely rich and wealthy without understanding the consequences those actions may have in their lives. And for beginners, blindly following sweeping advice without recognizing the uniqueness of their financial situation can lead to disaster.”

If this comment hits you like it hits me, then you’re probably going to be in for a good time. Admittedly, it wasn’t the idea of analogizing investments to video games that intrigued me, although I think the concept is very interesting. I personally wanted to read an investment book that simplified investing in a way that I can understand it and make informed decisions accordingly.
I love that this book actually recognizes its audience probably isn’t doing great financially. Why is that important? Because it wants us to value what little resources we have and properly educate ourselves on investment before recklessly spending money on what we don’t understand.
The book goes even further and actually questions the paths of these wealthy people we worship. It points out that it actually took Warren Buffet thirteen years to become a millionaire, and also points out that he made his money back in the 40s and 50s—that those circumstances are different from what most people would face today. This is refreshing, because the author is saying that our attempts to imitate these wealthy lifestyles can lead to disaster. It’s the best opening chapter in an investment book I’ve read.

It's not perfect. I had some problems adjusting the size of the text on my reading device, but not everybody will experience that. And there are several parts where the words run together. The book needs a round of editing. But the value of the content is immense. You’ll probably love it if you’re into video games, but the lessons will help anyone interested in investing, which, to me, is the sign of a quality read. It’s the best book I’ve read so far on the subject.

Super cool book on investing!

I absolutely loved this book as I have never read an investment book like it! I love how the whole book has a gaming theme behind it as this makes a heavy subject much more interesting and engaging. Being a big gamer myself, I was right on board with this and genuinely gained enjoyment from my read. The cool thing is I found I was able to learn the information so much better, and I find after reading I have retained the information.

I have been investing for a while now, so I was familiar with some of the terms throughout. Though I leanrn a lot of new strategies and further concepts that I will surely be implementing when building my portfolio in the future. The author writes in a way that you can understand and implement these strategies without having to be a total financial expert, which I highly appreciated.

Finally, I would like to point out the helpful content at the end of the book, which gives you many useful worksheets for tracking and research investing strategies. I also have to add the quality of the illustrations in the book where excellent, not what I was expecting from an investment book, but was pleasant surprised. Well done to the authors!

Level Up! by Keenan Morris is a great , super informational book for anyone that is looking to get started with the world of investing and financial planning. As the title suggests , being a Strategy Guide to the Game of Investing, it is heavily geared for readers that are into video games, but does not alienate someone that is not a gamer.
The chapters and book is split up into chapters that gamers will be familiar with, starting with a tutorial, then eventually getting to the endgame and New Game+ chapters.
I found it really easy to read, especially while covering some of the more complex topics of investing.
This is a really creative book that I enjoyed, much differently from some of the really boring, dry books on this topic.
I do have to give it one less star due to the formatting, a critique specific to the kindle version. On a kindle paperwhite, the book l presented without options to change the font size at all, in a textbook format. It looks fine on a pc/mac and other devices, but reading this on an ereader like the kindle was very challenging and I would recommend it only on other devices or the hardcover (which I did not review).

Making finance and money management fun and engaging

"Level Up!: Your Strategy Guide to the Game of Investing" is a refreshing and engaging take on personal finance that breaks down the often daunting world of investing into easily digestible concepts. This book is a game changer for anyone who has previously felt intimidated by financial jargon and complex strategies. By cleverly utilizing video game analogies, the author makes the subject matter approachable and fun, appealing to young adults looking to refresh their understanding of investing fundamentals. It’s a great resource in the classroom as well. The book is structured around eight levels that guide readers through their personal finance journey, like progressing through a video game. Each level represents a critical aspect of investing, from grasping the basics of finance to strategizing wealth-building without sacrificing the joys of life. This unique approach not only simplifies complex financial concepts but also encourages readers to see investing as an adventure, complete with challenges and rewards. I really enjoyed the Bestiary at the end!

You know what really grinds my gears about personal finance literature? It's usually written by folks who are already sitting comfortably on a pile of cash, way out of touch with the struggles of regular people in today's economy. They often dish out clichéd advice like 'just pull yourself up by your bootstraps,' without acknowledging the real challenges of making and keeping money. That's why Level Up caught my eye, and boy, did it deliver the goods!

What really struck a chord with me is how the author recognizes that traditional financial advice often fails to address our human nature and behaviors. He gets it. Sometimes, what seems more expensive in the short term can actually save you big bucks in the long run. The gaming terms help with some of the more complicated concepts and don't take away from the general message of the book. I will note that for some people the hypothetical examples can feel a little out of reach for the average person but that is further into the later chapters. Overall I would highly recommend this book.

Level Up by Keenan Morris is certainly an interesting read. It offers sound advice regarding financial investments; something many of us are lacking. It is written in such a way that anyone can understand the message and information contained in it.

Morris uses the analogy of video games to introduce newbies to the world of finance. Each chapter is headed by an amazing image and heading inviting the reader to enter the game of finance, like one might a video game. Characters at the end of the book also reflect this and really add to the excitement the author is trying to evoke.

And let’s face it, finance is anything but exciting to most people. It is dry, formula driven and unless you are fully over it, completely secretive. But this is where this book comes in. Morris has laid open the often-inexplicable areas of finance and using the analogy of a video game, has made his topic interesting and thought provoking.

This is a great book for young people looking to understand how to take financial control over their lives. If they want to live like kings and queens in their retirement, now is the time to start planning and getting educated about money. Also, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves video games and needs to understand the nitty gritty of the world of money.

"Level Up" is a game-changer in making investing easy and fun for everyone. With cool video game analogies, it breaks down those tricky financial concepts into something you can actually get. It's a standout in the personal finance and self-help world, offering straightforward, practical advice for tackling today's market without all the complicated jargon or talking down to you.
Think of the book as your personal finance coach who plays games with you regularly. It takes you through 8 levels of getting smart with your money, from boosting your savings to growing your wealth without missing out on the fun stuff. It was a very fun book to read, even for my not-very-gamer self. It even dives into the whole paying off debt versus investing thing, dishing out solid advice and flagging the financial traps to avoid.
"Level Up" isn't just another finance book; it's a reference that should be kept on your shelf for anyone looking to get the lowdown on investing. It is a fun way to grow your money as a gamer; this book is for you if you're ready to take control of your financial future.

Very informative!

I had zero experience and major anxiety about the stock market, but this book totally changed the game. Forget stuffy financial talk and those intimidating advisors in suits. This book uses a super cool video game theme that makes everything relatable and even fun.
It's not your grandpa's investing guide. "Level Up" starts with the basics but takes you on a journey through 8 levels, turning you into a confident investor. It even tackles the tough stuff, like balancing debt with your investment goals (been there, done that!).
Here's what I loved:
The author doesn't just dump information on you. He gives you step-by-step help on picking accounts, saving strategies, and even spotting sneaky money drains.. The book feels fresh. It talks about what's happening in today's market, not some outdated strategies.
The author even calls this book your "cheat code" for investing. I totally agree! If you're new to investing or just feel lost, "Level Up!" is the perfect way to get started. Highly recommend!

Unique Idea

This book is not like any investment book I’ve read in the past. It’s presented like a game and this makes it much more fun. Each chapter has a magical and colourful picture and intriguing title to match. Beginner’s Village, Tutorial Valley, The Easy Coastline and Gateway of Acadia are the first Chapters. It’s very unique.

The chapters explain each type of investment and explain things with charts and graphs to make it easier to understand. The book delves into safe investing and risky ones, giving the reader options. It goes in depth for retirement and other benefits of investment.

I like the chapters that use real life scenarios to show different strategies and how successful each person/couple/family does. It made it easier to understand the various tactics people use and how they work.

I liked this book because of the lovely art and game component. The advice was great and I learned so much. Recommended

Fun and relatable guide

I needed to do some research into the realm of finance and investments and have always found the area to be extremely daunting. I gave this book a try and I wasn’t disappointed.

The central premise of the book (and the one that hooked me in) was relating the world of investments to computer games. While I’m not a big gamer either, the author has broken down the world of investment & finance into easy to understand and relatable language. Giving comparisons and examples to the world of video games makes it easier to understand.

Some of the content and advice was specific to the US market but there was plenty of general information and guidance too. A lot of fun content, especially at the end when the author has created a bonus section with series of characters such as Knights, Sorcerers, Healers and Alchemists etc to represent different investor types and styles.

The book demystifies investing through the lens of video games which is a nice idea. The book is structured around the idea of progressing through levels, similar to video games, which serves as a practical framework for building financial skills and confidence.

It covers the fundamentals of saving and investing but also by addresses the psychological aspects of money management. It offers actionable strategies for navigating common financial challenges, from dealing with debt to making informed investment decisions. The use of gaming analogies throughout makes the content relatable and easy to digest.

The book is practical for a wide audience and its focus on modern investment strategies and the real-life application of gaming principles to financial growth makes it a fun resource for improving financial literacy and decision-making. It's a great read for anyone looking to enhance their financial well-being with a more interactive and engaging approach.

Now, let's get real. While I loved the overall tone of the book, I have to admit there were a few moments where the author's attempt at relating to gamers didn't quite land for me. I mean, I'm Gen Z, but some of the video game references felt a little forced. Thankfully, those instances were few and far between, so it was easy to brush them off and keep on reading.

What sets this book apart is its brilliant take on tackling modern-day financial problems. Although it can be a little brief in some areas it does a great job at giving you enough details to feel more informed about what do do next.

All in all, Level Up is great. It's like having a down-to-earth mentor who speaks your language and knows the struggles of our generation. So if you're looking to get your finances in order without all the boring lectures, this book is a must read. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Its difficult to precisely pinpoint exactly what this book is. Is it business, is it self-help, is it inspirational? I'm still trying to figure that out, but I think that's what makes it so fantastic and a unique read.

If you're tired of drowning in a sea of mind-numbing statistics or being told you're broke because you're lazy, then this book is for you. Debt and saving money is a pressing issue that many of us are grappling with, and the author handles it with finesse. None of that 'wishful thinking will make it disappear' nonsense. Instead, he dives right in, acknowledging the reality of the situation and helping you formulate a solid game plan to conquer that monster. The author even provides some handy worksheets in the back to record your own financials. As someone who has a tendency to misplace my notes this was a godsend. Trust me, it's worth the read.

First, I couldn't help but notice how well and interestingly the book is organized. Right from the Table of Contents, titled as the 'Start Menu,' to the names of the chapters: Easy Mode, Arcade Mode, Bonus Level, Boss Battles, World Map, and Armor: Glossary. For a gamer like me, that was just so extremely cool and unusual. Great kudos from me to the author!

The book is not only a lot of fun but also informative and helpful. In an easy and playful way, the author explains the basics of investment and keeping your money safe. For some people, including myself, investment might sound rather terrifying, but with his unique approach, Keenan Morris makes it feel a lot easier and calmer.

Although I've appreciated the playful manner of the book, some readers might find it annoying and irritating, especially reading 'game over' or 'ready player one.' So, I've warned you.

Thinking about the future can be scary, especially considering the economical situation in the world. “Level Up Investing” helps people assess their financial situations in a way that is easy to digest - through video game analogies!

Financial terms are confusing for most people and many (including myself) don’t understand all the ins and outs of investing. However, most of us do know a lot about video games! This book is a helpful tool for any person who wants to “level up” their financial awareness. It includes helpful tips and advice to learn the fundamentals of saving and helpful resources to guide you as you learn to invest and prepare for your future, such as: financial self assessments, budget worksheets and checkpoints in each chapter to make sure that you are completing the each task that you need to progress to the next stage on the path to financial freedom.

This book is very practical, and something that you can use as a reference manual. It's not your run-of-the-mill money book that puts you to sleep and has some very interesting wys to break down more complex concepts. However, I just don't get some of the examples the author presents in the story. I understand the overall concepts of saving, reducing debt and investing for your future but alot of the examples are hypothetical and I don't believe would work in real world situations. At least not the way they are presented.

With that said I still think the book has some good information and would recommend for anyone just getting into investing.
