Ashley Foster didn’t have a very typical childhood. Designed and born in a lab, experimented on, all under mind control, until the Harbinger terrorist organization decided to scrap the project. She survived, despite their efforts, and won her freedom.
The second semester of second year was about to start, and the harbingers had all but given up on taking her out. Perhaps the rest of her academy days would be quiet.
Her fist mission as a Fleet Mage however, would be quite a doozy.
Author’s This space opera is told in the third person limited from Ashley’s point of view.
I've been an avid book reader since I was a teenager in the 1980's. My preferred genre's are science fiction and fantasy.
I wrote some short stories and was encouraged to try writing and self publishing by some friends. I work in computers and writing is an obsessive hobby I have been trying to hone for a couple of years now. I'll let you judge if I have succeeded or not.
I've enjoyed this series so far, but I thought it was an academy series, so I was rather disappointed when the story glossed over the last three years of Ashley's school career in a single chapter. Was there really *nothing* interesting happening in all that time?
But I really want to talk about something that annoys me to no end: Ashley is almost never referred to by name. Pro tip: pronouns like "she" and "her" should refer to someone who was mentioned previously. They do not default to referencing your main character, even it you did post a weird disclaimer saying the story is from her POV. It gets really confusing when characters appear to be arguing with themselves.
If you need something to read without emotional entanglement and enjoy theoretical background exposure this series is for you. I would prefer at least a little humor thrown in to make it more like reading an actual story instead of a report but if all you want is something to distract your mind without engaging it much it will work. The gendering gets a bit annoying and it feels like a book written by a man but I guess that is mostly my personal bias. For me this feels like another series written as a concept and waiting to be fleshed out with the life part to make it real.
While the action itself is fairly good, I'm left wondering why anyone would not fully use the weapon at hand. And why no one asks who allowed the terrorists access, or why intelligence doesn't observe new ships being built. Lots of how and why questions with no answers. I do love the magic system and the ability to program new spells, but that is a minor part of the story.
Really enjoying this series, well written and fun to read!!!!!!
Congratulations to D.L. Harrison for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
A series that continues to be really worthwhile (4.5 stars).
I highly recommend this series. The plot is action packed, creative and interesting. The characters are becoming more real with every book. The writing is solid and is at 4.5 star level.
My title sums it up fairly well. Good story, but the constant grammar and plot errors were frustrating. Only thing more annoying was the constant irrelevant physical descriptions of essentially throwaway characters.
More of the same, which is good. Ashley it's still extremely OP but self-limited. A Union, it seems always tries to take the high road morally, and though I agree, it might come and bite them in the rear later. Let's see what's next.
This is a okay, light read but no more. The book is like the cover. Simple and a bit amateurish. It is also bordering on being a young adult book.
Having said that, the story is decent. The characters, although young, are not too bad.
It is a bit of a shame that the author, after the first two books, kind of skipped over the rest of the academy training and went straight to first deployment.
Of course her first deployment becomes a bit more dramatic and action filled than expected. Some decent action going on there.
I think my biggest gripe is this continuing rubbish about her not being allowed to use her full powers. Not even when the situation is quite dire. Dragging down the book a bit for me.
