Simon Lee learned from a young age about the magic of escaping into a good book. Whether it was joining a perilous expedition across Conan Doyle's Lost World, or strolling through the rolling hills of Tolkien's Shire, the words never failed to take him away.

Fantasy was his first love, but a ferocious appetite for Sci-Fi and horror soon followed, indeed anything that offered some much-needed escapism.

After writing a few of his own short stories, Simon published his debut novella Whisper Wood for Amazon Kindle in 2021. He lives in the North of England, where inspiring hillside adventures are never far away...

This sequel to Whisper Wood picks up straight after the events of book 1 but then goes back in time, following a single character rather than the multiple POV we had in the first story. It tells the tale of Eddie, a young soldier who finds his life changing forever after an encounter with unknown voices.

War plays a big role as various conflicts from recent history become involved in Eddie's journey. For me this was the strongest part of the story; aspects of it seemed well researched and there were a few lines that were quite moving in places. I wish the supernatural side of the plot had played a bigger role and been more detailed though; the voices and their motive seemed very vague.

Overall it was an interesting read. Even for anyone who hasn't read the first book or isn't keen on paranormal genres, this would hold up well as a standalone war story.
