Seemingly insignificant acts can have a profound impact on the lives of others. A little act of kindness can affect another, not only at the time it happens, but also long into the future—it can even affect those not yet born. Just because a kindness isn’t seen as a grand deed by either the doer or receiver doesn’t mitigate its worth. In fact, we rarely think about, much less foresee, how our efforts, big or small, might affect the lives and futures of others. This book is a collection of stories about little acts and events that made a difference. Action taken that somehow made life better for another or others. There are stories about noble deeds that were immediately recognized as noble. But just as often, the stories are about events that didn’t look all that noble at the time—and only later would the true impact be appreciated. Some of the stories herein are about places and things—rather than people—that have made a difference to others. There are stories from my personal experiences, and some are experiences of others. Most of the stories in my earlier book, Awe-Full Spirituality in the Commonplace, had a spiritual emphasis. Some of the stories in this book have spiritual content, but most focus more on change through human interaction. Philip Gulley, a Quaker pastor and author of Home Town Tales, “None of us ever got anywhere except through the kindness of others. Sometimes we boast about being self-made, but that’s just a lie we tell ourselves to feel important. We’re all indebted to someone.” He is right.
