The Notorious Briarwoods #2

The Diamond's Absolutely Delicious Downfall

Rate this book
Lady Juliet, sister of the Duke of Westleigh, is determined to marry an earl, at least. A duke would be best! After all, she’s the diamond of the season. While her mother is proud of her role as an actress, married into a notoriously eccentric family, Juliet hates those that sometimes treat her mama as if she’s beneath them. Juliet can’t wait to show everyone just how perfect she can be and how marvelous her mama is at making matches.

Still, she can’t quite ignore the wild streak that runs through her blood. One night while visiting her aunt in secret, backstage at Drury Lane, she meets a ridiculously handsome, and impossible, American rogue who mistakes her for a lady of the night. When they meet again at a ton ball, sparks fly, and passion cannot be denied. Nor can it be denied that he finds the English intolerable, arrogant, and beneath his ideals.

Yet, despite the fact that they have every reason to stay away from each other, an undeniable connection keeps pulling them back together where wars of words and kisses of longing threaten to steel her heart. Even though the American heats her blood and tempts her with his gruff wit, he’s far from a duke and Juliet can’t sacrifice everything she’s always worked for. . . Not even for love.

This is my 69th book by Eva Devon. I read one of her books in 2016 then didn't pick her up again until 2018 and I have been reading her ever since. She is one I consider a favorite author.

I enjoyed the story. Although it read really short and I don't feel the characters, Juliet and Tobias. Although likable, they didn't have much depth or not enough character development. I liked them together but didn't really feel their chemistry. I think because of the lack of depth. But Eva Devon writes well so I feel she can get away with it a bit more than some other authors that would fall flat.

My rating for The Diamond's Absolutely Delicious Downfall, by Eva Devon: 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3 stars.

This was the 2nd book in the Notorious Briarwoods series. These books can be read standalone, but I believe they would be more enjoyable if read in order -- as they are each about the romance of one of the Briarwood siblings.

I liked that the Briarwood family was so different than most noble families of the time. Most of them didn't care what others thought of them, and didn't bother to try and meet society's ridiculous expectations. I also really liked that the family stuck together, cared deeply about each other, and did their best to help each other achieve happiness.

I liked Juliet, but thought she was too fixated on marrying a man with a title. She was convinced that doing that would make people stop gossiping about her mother (who had been an actress before marrying Juliet's father). Her family had to work to help her understand that the gossip didn't bother them, and that she needed to marry for love, not a title.

Tobias was likable enough, but it bothered me a little that he automatically assumed Juliet was an actress when he saw her at the theatre. She didn't mind, but he still shouldn't have assumed.

I liked that Juliet's family contrived to get that her together with Tobias, as they knew she wouldn't be happy without him. Their methods were definitely unusual for the time, but it ended up working out.

This book did have sex scenes, but they weren't extremely explicit. I also really liked that Juliet's family actually arranged for her to be alone with Tobias, and weren't concerned with keeping her innocent until marriage. They understood that she needed help to get past her own plans, and knew that time with Tobias would help with that.

I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I admit I did get a little bored. It was o.k., but a little bit too long for me. I did read it from start to end. 3☆

This book was okay. Honestly, there wasn't really anything that I found that really made it stand out against all of the other books in this genre, except for how utterly ridiculous these characters could be at times.

Let's start off with Juliet. She is proud of the fact that she comes from a family with a tradition of not caring what other people think and doing what makes them happy. Yet she has convinced herself that she has to marry a titled man (preferably a Duke) so that she can wield power over the ton and get them to stop gossiping about her mother (who was an actress before she became a Duchess). The thing is, her mother doesn't care about the gossip and never has. Nor does Juliet's brother, or any one else in the family, so it called into question her true motives for wanting to be a titled lady knowing that most ton marriages were little more than business transactions when her parents and her twin sister both had love matches.

Then we have Tobias, who claimed to hate the aristocracy and all they stood for, but seemed all too keen to spend time with Juliet and her unique family. I felt we understood his motivations a bit better however, as he had fought in the revolutionary war, and his goal was to help Juliet's brother by publishing pamphlets that would hopefully help stop an uprising from happening in England the same way one was on the rise in France.

Finally, we have Juliet's family. All well-known for being eccentric. For all of Juliet's griping that she wanted people to stop gossiping about her mother, not once during this entire novel did I see one bit of gossip about the Duchess. Nor was Lady Juliet shunned by anyone in polite society because of her mother's background, which again, led me to question her true motivations. One thing I feel I must point out is that if you are a stickler for proper rules and stories that are more accurate than you may not find this one to your liking as not only does Juliet's family not keep the marital act a secret from the young ladies of the house, but her family goes the extra mile to throw Tobias and Juliet together (and then leave them alone). In fact, her brothers even tell Tobias that he is welcome to sleep with Juliet so long as they are discreet about it. I'm sorry what? In what world would a noble family (no matter how eccentric) allow their daughters and sisters to be deflowered, especially when planning to make a match within the ton?

If you can overlook that, this was a quick read with minimum drama. However, it was also often predictable. I am rather curious however about the Duke's book and whether or not he decides to turn an American business woman into a Duchess of his own.

Family Knows Best……..

I have mixed emotions regarding this book. The characters and character development was excellent. I loved Tobias from the very beginning. He was strong, charming, funny, sweet, and thoughtful. Juliet was a bit of a disappointment as a heroine because not only was she behaving contrary to her family roots, but she was being very selfish in her actions. She came off very selfish and immature at times. It was clear that she loved Tobias, but she fought those feelings way too long and too hard.
I loved the side characters in the book almost more than the H and h. All of the Briarwood family, especially the grandmother, were amazing and entertaining. The way they support and love one another is so nice to see when in this period, there are so many families that disown family members if they do anything they don’t agree with and approve. Thanks to all the support of Juliet’s wonderful family, they would not allow their relationship to fail. Tobias found the woman he loved and the family that loved and accepted him as their own and got the HEA that he and Juliet didn’t know they wanted and needed.
I love the Briarwoods and would have given 5 stars if Juliet’s character wasn’t so contrary to the family. It just wasn’t reasonable for her to hold on to her views for so long especially after everyone was trying to show her that her reasoning wasn’t valid. I also felt the book was a little long winded in places and I didn’t need the extensive descriptions of the scenery and decor.

This is a pretty good read. The background is fascinating, with King George on the downhill slide, the American revolution over, the French revolution just beginning to percolate, and this unique and powerful family swirling throughout it all.

The female lead, Juliet, fixates wrongly on marrying someone of high rank. Her obsession is due to a need to defend her mother, a former actress who has long been a duchess. It's a little unclear why Juliet feels this need, since no one in her family cares what others say, least of all her mother. They are obscenely wealthy and powerful. I didn't really get this somewhat modern emotional issue as part of the dynamic.

The male lead, Tobias, is an American who feels the same passionate attraction as Juliet. Yet he's not quite as sketched out here. Yes, a lot of words are applied to his character, but not enough showing as opposed to the telling.

The sex is a little boring, frankly. I'm more accustomed to reading more detailed scenes and a lot more of them. The only scene was the taking of the virginity, and it was only a page long. I personally felt it was pretty juvenile and awfully quick. It didn't at all seem satisfying. There's a bit of a "fade to black" quality that i don't care for.

The ending is predictable and fairly trite.

I'm hoping the next one is better.

The Diamond's Absolutely Delicious Downfall by Eva Devon is the second book about the Briarwoods. The Briarwoods are a family that are originals. Their parents were a duke and an actress, which was not done. The children while participating in the season all had different ways to stand out. Lady Juliet (twin to Hermia) was a diamond. She was beautiful, always knew the right things to say or do, and danced beautifully. She had long determined that she wanted to marry a duke! Nothing less would do. Marrying a duke would make her family less dramatic.

Luckily for her she met Tobias, an American. He was a business owner who had come to Britain with no intention of meeting and marrying anyone! He met Juliet sneaking in to meet her aunt at the theater. Tobias mistook her to be a lowly actress and kissed her. Surprised, the next night they met at a ball. Then, he moves into Juliet’s family’s home to help make various pamphlets and sheets for her brother.

Would a mere mister do? Not a duke, earl, or even a viscount, Juliet is falling for an American commoner. The Diamond's Absolutely Delicious Downfall by Eva Devon was a good read.

Juliet wants to marry a title because she has some twisted view that more nobility will make them even more accepted in the Ton! Her mother is a Duchess that married for love with no regrets!
Jealous people will always say crazy things you have to live your life for you period!
Tobias is a well American who is estranged from his parents who were Royalist who did terrible things! Tobias has been in the American war and watched me die of course he’s not unscathed but he lives life to the fullest!
There is not as much chemistry between these two as in the last book! Definitely steamy scenes though!
Juliet has a hard time separating who she is as a Dukes daughter to who she truly is and what she can be!
I didn’t like the 5 marriage proposals unresolved and just hanging out there! The end was abrupt and less directly into the next story!
Will Juliet decide to live and seize the day? Definitely worth reading to see if live was lived to the fullest! Bravo

Royalist vs Revolutionist

Tobias is an American born and bread. Juliet is loyal Englush. How can she think about marrying a Duke when she has a rebel! But her dream is to marry a "Titled" lord to support her mother and make all the biddies suffer for what they have said about her mother. Little does she realise that in doing so she is shutting herself off from being happy.
Tobias does not want to marry, let alone be involved with English gentry. He want peace, solice, and to be a changing force in the world.
Can these two see that together that both have to give up something to get what will make them the happiest? What shenanigans will Julie's family pull behind their backs? Can they survive it?

Great fun read with lots of blunt, fun banter and loving family support.

Book two was wonderful

The book was unexpected and different than the typical historical. The string was a bit before the defence time frame and shortly after the Revolution art war. The Broad wood family is unique and able to be different due to being the family of a duke. This story was about the sister Juliet who had always sought and achieved perfection. She had plans to marry the perfect aristocracy and be a great member of the ton. All great ideas fall apart when you meet a man who is not hat you hoped for and Tobias is an American and totally unexpected. The book is a fun read with a bit of spice and unexpected personalities and behavior. Enjoy!

Second in the Briarwood family series. Juliet misses her sister now she's married and moved away, whilst she is still busy being This season a diamond, hoping to make a brilliant marriage to keep her mother's reputation high. But with five offers on the table, and none from a duke (although one is received during the book), Juliet is struggling to enjoy life. When visiting her aunt at the theatre, she meets a man who literally blows her socks off, and when he steals a kiss she's overwhelmed.

Odd family with wonderful names for the sons, although I'm not sure we hear her eldest brother, the dukes name, the daughters names suffer in comparison.
Also no downfall in the eyes of the ton.

This is the second book in the Notorious Briarwoods series but can be read as a standalone.
Lady Juliet doesn't want to marry anyone below the rank of an Earl. She doesn't like the way the Ton treats her mother who was an actress.
When she meets Tobias Miller, an American at the theater while visiting her actress aunt and he kisses her, she can't stop thinking about him.
Her brother the duke has business with Tobias and invites him to stay with him and his family at their home.
This was such a fun, entertaining read. The chemistry was wonderful between Juliet and Tobias and there were a lot of interesting secondary characters.
I highly recommend this book.

It just gets better...

I enjoyed the first Notorious Briarwoods book, and enjoyed this one even more! I want to write this review quickly so I can start the third. Juliet does not meet a Romeo, but instead, an American! *Gasp* She is stubborn and determined to marry a title, however, so she may, indeed, live a tragedy after all. "Life's a stage..." Moreso with these colorful characters. You should read this book.

Delightful!

Eva Devon's criticisms historical romance brings more exposure to the unorthodox Briarwood family of Regency Era England. Juliet Briarwood is the Diamond of the new Season, and she has set her sights on marrying a duke if possible, nothing lower than a Vicount. Then she meets an untitled American who fought the the War with the Colonies, and all bets are off. Good characters, lively action and dialogue.

Highly recommend.

A great read

I enjoyed reading about Tobias and Juliet, how they met to how they fell in love. They met at the theater and then he was invited to stay at the house by her brother with the excuse that he needed Tobias and his printing press. It was a great HEA. I highly recommend this book! ❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍

I “actually “ liked this book! Not your typical Romance novel. The story which of course like so many of this genre is farcical but what sets it apart is that it is laced with humour. It is well written and meant to be a lark! Enjoy!

I enjoy the family over all there is just something “missing” from these stories to make them a higher rating . I think because they are so surface level but they are perfect pallet cleansers between other fantasy stories

good read

Sometimes reaching for what everyone wants and expects keeps you from what you want. Juliet was the diamond but she didn’t realize until she met the American what it was to truly shine

Very good

Juliet thinks she wants to marry a Duke. Then she meets Tobias. They are attracted to each other. Will she give up wanting Duke to find love? The Briarwoods are meddling as usual. Great characters. Well written.
