Aiden had everything—his dream career, a comfortable life and a fiancée he loved. But when she is murdered during a business trip to Mars, his perfect world shatters.
An investigation and a trial soon follow, and the space smuggler, Darren Howe, is quickly convicted. However, when no motive is supplied and Howe is given a life sentence instead of the death penalty, things don't add up. No matter how hard Aiden tries, the authorities refuse to explain their decision, leaving him with no choice but to seek the answers elsewhere.
Two years later, Aiden secures a job as the warden at Jupiter’s Horizons Space Prison. The plan is simple—find out the truth and kill Howe. But things get complicated when he approaches the charismatic man who awakens in him urges he hasn’t felt in years.
The truths Aiden uncovers as he fights the attraction between them will reveal secrets he might not be ready for and make him question everything he knows about the life he’s lived so far.
Chasing Howe is an enemies-to-lovers MM sci-fi slow burn romance mystery about an ex-architect who will stop at nothing until he avenges the death of his fiancée and the prisoner who will turn his world upside-down. It serves as an easy introduction to the low sci-fi genre and features hidden identities, a generous dose of mystery, high stakes, slow burn, pining, obsession and an intriguing plot. It is Book 1 in the Forging the Stars duet.
Ok, I just can’t anymore with this. The concept, the prison and sci-fi scenario were pretty cool in the beginning, but the mystery/crime thriller plot took over everything and I’m just bored with it. It’s described as a slow burn, but they haven’t even started the fire yet at seventy percent. It is the first of a series so I’m guessing the burning will start later on, but I’m not that patient. If the political intrigue was actually interesting, I wouldn’t mind the romance being so non present, but it was all too convoluted and messy. The flow was also a little choppy, with a lot of time skips in the first 30/40%. I’m not invested enough in these characters or the story to be willing to waste another hour on this.
Whoever said fucking the guy that murdered your fiancée wasn't an effective coping mechanism can take a seat.
This is my first book by this author so I really had no idea what to expect but what I truly did NOT expect was becoming ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED to this story.
Here's the thing - I have always, always, always had a thing for sci-fi romance books. Make it MM? Sign me up. Make it a unique & thrilling murder-mystery-meets-convoluted-intragalactic-coup-d'état? Fuck me up, fam. Throw in a dash of toxicity, a heaping scoop of vacillating power imbalances, and a limitless amount of uncontrollable attraction? Run that shit through my veins.
While we do get some higher heat towards the end, this is definitely a slooow burn as advertised. I actually really enjoyed the pacing of Aiden & Darren's relationship; I think it works for the plot and their characters and I like how hard Aiden tries to fight his growing attraction - it'll make their relationship development in the second book all the more satisfying. Especially since all Aiden really gives into is the physical side of the attraction so I'm eager to see how things change for them emotionally.
As far as the plot goes, I like to think I've read enough space operas to know when I've found something unique and this is definitely within that realm. While the details of the plot are delightfully innovative, the book still follows the traditional track of a true space opera in that it still has a considerable amount of non-romance elements. Which, in this case, I actually prefer. While I anticipate the second book being a lot more romance-heavy, I like that I kind of have to work for it.
In terms of critique, the only one I really have is that the writing could be a tad rough and, at times, repetitive. But it wasn't enough to discourage me from keeping the nit-picky part of my brain firmly in the "off" position and letting myself just enjoy the story.
I need the second book NOOOOOW.
✧While I received a free e-arc from GRR, all thoughts are my own.✧
This is a new to me author but this won’t be the last book by this author I read. I fell in love with this story and these characters. They are raw, gritty and so incredibly real with deep, passionate emotions. Aiden takes on a fake identity to become the temporary warden of a prison in space to get close to Darren and question him about the murder of Aiden’s fiancée, Claudia. Darren was convicted of murdering Claudia but everything is kept hush-hush and secret, classified and confidential. Two years after the murder, Aiden doesn’t have much to go on, so he goes with his warden plan. There is a huge mystery to solve, conspiracy theories, enemies to lovers, assassinations, attempted murders, and so much foreplay and hear. Whew. This is a slow burn though, while there is lots of buildup to the ultimate fire, it is slow and intense. But the connection and the mystery, the build up, it is all worth it. It is perfectly done. There are so many twists and turns and conspiracy theories to solve, it keeps you guessing and trying to solve the mystery with Aiden. It is well written. The author gives two distinct voices to his main characters and endears you to both of them. It is not a stand alone book, there will be a second story, while this book doesn’t have a conclusion to the story and plot, it doesn’t end on a major cliffhanger. It sucked me in and made me crave more. I really can’t wait to read the next book.
This is the first book I've read from this author, and oh my goodness, I am hooked! I am not one who usually loves sci-fi, but the settings and sci-fi elements were so well done. Our main characters, Aiden and Darren, are everything you want in MCs- morally grey, determined, rough but sweet. The mystery element kept me enthralled and I couldn't put the book down! The enemies to lovers was so well done, with the intensity and build up making this a true slow-burn. I also really appreciate that this book didn't end on a huge cliff hanger, though the second book can't come soon enough!
This was a really fun, very wild adventure! I really enjoyed the characters and the mystery was fun to try to figure out! I definitely look forward to the next books in the series to find out what happens next and to see how the slow burn continues to develop. This had solid enemies to lovers vibes, but was more focused on the mystery than the romance. Chasing Howe was the first in a series so I’m looking forward to seeing the romance progress!
Secrets. Lies. Betrayal. Plot twists at every turn. A journey to find out the truth behind his fiancés murder. Is Darren Howe truly a psychopathic murderer? Aidan’s quest for the truth leads to more questions than answers. How far would you go for the one you love? How much will Aidan have to give up to get his answers? What do you do when you track down your fiancés killer and find yourself immensely attracted to him? How do you cope, and how long will you be able to fight the attraction before you give in? These are the same questions I asked myself while reading this book. It was a very gripping MM mystery suspense. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for answers. It is the first in a series. It doesn’t leave on a major cliffhanger but you will definitely want to know what happens in book 2.
This book is definitely more action packed than romance packed. The spice level is very low, but the plot is fantastically written; it really keeps you engaged. The longing, desire and hatred between characters is portrayed perfectly and definitely sets the scene for the perfect slow burn. I would highly recommend this book if you love sci-fi slow burns with action packed plots and shrouded in mysteries that will keep you guessing the whole book.
This is an intense, thrilling sci fi novel that leaves you clamoring for the next book. Aiden is seeking revenge for the murder of his fiance and after 2 years, gets face to face with her killer Darren. But all is not as it appears. In the future, off planet, there is plausible technology and advances but human emotions drive this plot. Tons of angst (the author claims they write low to medium) regardless of the attraction to Darren and Darren has charm that is apparent even as an inmate. Its a slow burn romance with tempting moments of intimacy that I hope ramps up in the next book. I loved this book, the plot, their tantalizing interactions, their side characters and all the conspiracy. Never having read the author before, I can't wait to read what's next. I received a copy of this book, bought it and this is my honest opinion.
In a future world, Aiden's fiancee is killed but the killer received jail time instead of the mandatory death sentence. Two years later and unable to let go, Aiden gets a fake identity so he can become the warden of the prison where Howe is. However, there is a lot more to what happened than Aiden could ever conceive.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It has MM romance, sci-fi, thriller, intrigue, and slow-burn. It sounds like a lot but it really works together so well. The dual POV between Howe and Aiden are done fantastically and really help to add so much more depth to the story than a single POV or omniscient narrator. Minor characters like Nyle, Bea, and Matt were great.
I still have a lot of questions, but given that this is a series, it makes me want to get book two when it comes out for answers and to see what happens next!
My one criticism is the world building. I felt like there could have been more time spent on this or more detail. Despite being in the 2100s, Victorian fashion and architecture are back? I think?
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Chasing Howe is the first in the Forging the Stars duology, and it's a good introduction to the story that will develop in the second book. Overall, it was a really interesting concept and a good plot at the core, but it had a few issues and stumbled along the way towards the good parts. I'd say that the story didn't pick up and really hold my interest until 45-50%.
My first issue is that the book began – somewhat inexplicably – with EIGHT PAGES of story that came BEFORE the contents page. I have no idea why this was done. It reminded me of old Mills & Boon novels, which used to give you a page snippet of the story before you ever got to the title page. Or years ago when Sierra Riley used to include the only sex scene of the book at the start, then you'd turn the page and the two characters hadn't even met yet. That's what this felt like. And, honestly – it wasn't necessary. The EXACT SAME chapter is actually the first chapter of the book, so I have no idea why the author/publisher would include it before the contents, then have us read it again as the first chapter. It was very confusing.
The beginning was EXCEPTIONALLY slow paced. I really struggled to keep going with the book, up to around 40%, where things started coming together. If I'd been reading it for myself, I probably would have DNF'd before then, but because I was reviewing I kept going and I'm glad I did. It DID pick up later, but it took a long time to get to the point. I easily could have cut the first half of the book in half or even less.
The plot itself was really interesting. Aiden's fiancee, Claudia, was murdered two years ago, but instead of her killer, Darren Howe, being put to death – as is usual in this world, for the crime – he's been sent to prison for 50 years. Aiden can't understand why there's a discrepancy with the expected sentence, and why he's been shut out of the investigation, the trial, and isn't allowed to see or know about any of the investigation. He decides to investigate himself, with the help of a PI. In the course of this investigation, he gets a job as the new replacement warden to the Horizons prison, where Darren is incarcerated. He intends to get answers as to why Claudia was murdered and why Darren escaped a death sentence, but what he finds is only more questions...
This part of the plot was INCREDIBLE. I loved every part of it, from the littering of hints and clues throughout, to the way that Aiden and Darren kept circling each other's orbits without actually getting together too quickly. The slow burn was just right, considering Aiden's mental struggle and the awkward situation of him being the 'warden' and Darren being a prisoner.
However, I found their flirtations a little awkward. Sometimes they would have 'banter' with each other, but it felt drifting and stilted, like it was unnatural. They also made more out of looks and exchanges than I would have read into them. They thought each other were far more flirty and seductive than it came across in the text, e.g. “Darren licked his lips, feeling his expression turn impish. “May I speak freely?” “You may, though I was of the impression you already were.” Darren’s dick jerked in his pants. That mouth. “I think you are an arrogant smartass that likes to get off by feeling superior.”” For me, this doesn't feel like the “that mouth” comment is really appropriate; Aiden wasn't particularly snarky or provocative, to warrant it. This kind of thing happened a lot. I think there was a little too much emphasis on how obsessed and attracted they were to each other, with little instances like this meant to reinforce that feeling, but it just didn't feel natural. Which was a shame, because I really liked both characters and they had great chemistry together. For me, their BEST chemistry was when the author wasn't trying to prove they were into each other. Darren was mouthy, flirty and inappropriate most of the time. Aiden was conflicted, because he shouldn't like Darren but he couldn't resist; was disgusted by his own thoughts over Darren, and that this was the man who murdered his fiancee. I LOVED that conflict and I could see how well matched they were when it wasn't forced.
Personally, I found some of the phrasing...odd. It didn't always read well, in places, and it didn't feel like an editing issue. Sometimes it felt like the author wasn't a native English writer – though I don't know if that's the case, only the phrasing was off in a way that I've seen happen with writers who don't have English as their first language. Everything was understandable, but the formatting of the phrases was all wrong. I also feel like the sex scene – there was only one, but it was pretty detailed – was very rushed and not really logical. I had a hard time picturing what was going on because there was lots of movement, lots of aggressive adjustments and rearrangements that didn't always flow well, to show what was happening.

OVERALL
While I had some issues with the execution – word/phrase choices, the slow pacing at the beginning – I really did enjoy the book. It all came together in the end to create an intriguing and clever plot, with interesting characters. I really liked Darren and Aiden, both individually as well as as a potential, future couple. I also liked the secondary cast – the inmates, the prison guards, particularly Nyle and Bea. I liked how well they'd been fleshed out, each with their own part to play and personalities.
I hesitated over my review rating, between a 3.5 – which I would give a good plot with great potential that wasn't quite pulled off brilliantly – and a 4. In the end, I went with the 4, because I finished the book and I'm eager to read the next one, and even the backstory.
I'm looking forward to Book 2, but I'm also eager to read Star Heist, which is a backstory to Book 1. However, I'll wait until I've finished Book 2 before I delve into Star Heist, just in case there's some minor spoilers to how the series ends.

Favourite Quote
“when he met those potent eyes and found in them the suppressed, haunted want that spoke to his soul without being asked to, he knew he’d lost the fight. He couldn’t just walk away, not when he saw in this man a kindred soul, someone who offered him what he had been searching for without even knowing it.”
DNF @ 30% It became increasingly clear to me that the optimistic and interesting first chapter was probably the most fun I was going to have with this. I love a good space opera, and I think this has the right amount of exposition in the prose to make the worldbuilding seamless, but not enough emotional connection with the characters to make that matter.
The writing is in need of polish - repetitively referring to a side character as the (blank) twink, as well as contractions disappearing somewhere between 25-30% left me forcing myself to turn pages. The prison didn't feel real or scary enough, Aiden's motivation didn't feel intense enough, and Darren didn't grab my interest, even in passing.
Has potential, but I won't be continuing the series.
Aiden is an architect, married to his high school sweetheart, the daughter of a very powerful, prominent businessman. One evening she is shot to death and Aiden spirals for the next two years, carefully planning his revenge on her killer...only to find out that her murder is part of a much bigger problem centered around power, money, and murder.
Ending up on the run with Darren, the man he'd planned to kill for revenge, his entire focus now is to simply survive being hunted by those he thought were safe.
I liked this story, though I thought it was a bit scattered for the first 30% or so. There were some inconsitent things that made my eyebrow arch (for instance, talking about someone doubting that someone is a psychopath because they didn't act like one...which I mean, is a psychopathic trait in itself...).
The story picked up at about the 60% mark when shit began to hit the fan. Don't expect any response to the sexual tension until the last few chapters of the book. The spicy scene is honestly pretty bland and quick, without a whole lot of detail, so if you're looking for a nice smut scene, this isn't it, but it seems to be a tipping point for Aiden and Darren.
Wrapping this up:
The storyline is great - Murder Mystery/conspiracy with M/M enemies to lovers MC's in a futuristic sci-fi setting.
The characters are decent -- not great, not bad, but I expect to see more personality development in the next book.
Spicy level: 2.5/5 One relatively brief intercourse sex scene that isn't all that detailed, and sort of a fade-to-black feel. It's hinted the next day that a whole lot more went on that night (multiple orgasms mentioned)but we didn't get to see that, which was kind of annoying to me since I like spice ;) This is another thing I expect we'll see more of in the next book (I hope!).
It's an overall good read, especially if you like mystery/mayhem in a futuristic setting and an M/M enemies-to-lovers relationship. That first 30% or so had me wondering if I would end up enjoying it (it was slow and felt a bit scattered), and I'm glad I pushed through because I really enjoy the general storyline and am looking forward to the next book!
This was a really interesting read. I would probably rate it around 3.5 (rounded up to 4) as the story had a lot of intriguing bits that kept me interested. I'm not normally a big crime or mystery reader, but the plot of this one sounded good so I figured I'd give it a go.
Some of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the setting (being in outer space and traveling between planets/moons), as well as the tension between the two characters, Aiden and Darren. The enemies to lovers aspect of the book feels pretty real with this one (though I do think the chemistry starts immediately, and I would prefer for it develop a little later in the story, but that's just me). I think the overall story line for the series is a big part of what makes this a good read for me as well. I'm really looking forward to getting the rest of the story.
The things that hold this back from a top rating are a bit more complicated, which is why I rounded up my rating to a 4. My biggest wish is that this book felt more sci-fi. I hope any future books in this series really capitalize on the space adventure more, because I think this book could have been written fully on current day Earth and it would have been the same, and I just want there to be elements about the story that just feel out of this world or a bit unbelievable in current day when I'm reading sci-fi. I also found a lot of the mystery plot points somewhat guessable, so if you prefer a mystery that really stumps you, this may not be that for you.
All that being said, I really did enjoy the book, and I look forward to continuing read the story as it progresses. I received an advance reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This narrative and its characters captivated me. Their emotions run deep and intense, and they are raw and gritty. As a means of getting to know Darren and interrogating him on the death of Aiden's fiancée, Claudia, Aiden assumes the guise of a space prison warden for the time being. Everything surrounding Darren's conviction for the murder of Claudia is categorized as confidential and is kept under wraps. With little information available to him two years after the crime, Aiden implements his warden plan. So much foreplay and hearing, as well as a massive mystery, conspiracies, enemies-turned-lovers, assassinations, and attempted murders. Oh my. Although there is a great deal of buildup to the final conflagration, the burn is gradual but severe. Nevertheless, the buildup, the link, and the mystery make it worthwhile. It is executed flawlessly. With Aiden at your side, you'll be left guessing as you strive to unravel the mystery amidst a web of conspiracy theories and unexpected turns. The writing is excellent. The protagonists are portrayed by the author in two separate voices, and you come to love them both. Although this book does not conclude the story or storyline, it also does not leave readers on a huge cliffhanger, nor is it a standalone; there will be a second story. I couldn't resist being engrossed and wanting more. The next book is going to be so much fun to read.I received an advance review copy , and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Chasing Howe is a story that instantly grabbed my attention. It promised a mix of things I adore – science-fiction, mystery, and romance – and I went in with high expectations. I will be honest and say that my feelings changed a lot throughout the book.
At first, the story had me curious. Things are happening from the start, and I was eager to watch as the pieces would fall into place. While things are happening, the story is very slow moving. It is a lot of watching small interactions play out with the promise of the big thing, yet it took a long time before the big moments came together. I had been hoping this slowness would allow for the tension to build between the characters, but it did not work for me. I wanted a lot more tension than was given, which is why I did not fall as deeply for their story as I had hoped. Add in the fact that some things felt a bit inconsistent, and these pulled me out of the story because my investment was not as deep as it could have been. While things did hook more as the story progressed and more elements were introduced, it was never quite enough to have me loving it as much as the opening left me expecting.
All in all, there is an interesting idea within the pages of Chasing Howe. However, there was not quite enough to ensure I will be devouring the next in the series as soon as it is ready.
With the murder of his fiancé, Aiden’s perfect life collapsed. They did catch the killer but the trial was completed in total secrecy and the man sent to prison rather than being given a death sentence. Aiden needs answers and now two years later he is in a position to obtain them. Setting up a new identity, Aiden is now the warden of the prison where the killer is serving his sentence. Darren Howe is not at all what he was led to believe and the answers are not being found, only more questions. As he uncovers some things, some things remain obscure. Darren only adds to the questions. Nothing in his former perfect life was as it seemed.
Aiden is walking a fine line and his health is suffering as a result. Darren is not at all as he was led to believe. Not to mention that Darren seems to bring some desires that he thought had been gone. Darren was quite the contrast. Filled with secrets, his are ones that others will kill to keep that way. This turned out to be an exciting story. It did take me some time to get into it but the action was incredible and compelling. As the puzzle pieces slowly fall into place, these two have much more work to be done. It does leave on a bit of a cliff hanger and I cannot wait to see what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and this is my unbiased opinion.
Thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for providing an ARC
What can I say other then wow, wow, wow!
The concept of this novel had me intrigued and I didn’t want to put this novel down- while it was a bit slow paced the plot itself is amazing!
We are introduced to Aiden, who has recently lost his (female) fiancé and in order to find out more about her death, creates a fake identity in order to go under cover as a warden at the prison where her killer; Darren Howe, is incarcerated.
This is a hard book to review because it doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into any one genre; while it does contain sci fi elements, it’s also a murder mystery with slight tinges of romance- if you’re here for the romance you will be sorry because it’s VERY light when it does appear and that’s at around the 75% mark of the book.
That’s not to say this novel is bad- on the contrary it is amazing and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Not once did it drag (well maybe towards the end but that could just be my own impatience!), though towards the ending you do start wondering how it’s going to get wrapped up.
JF Miev is a new author to me and I will be reading more of their works; if you're happy with a semi cliff hanger then read this book!
"-Whatever his reason for being here, this man was trouble. And the worst kind of trouble to boot, the kind that Darren wanted to shove against a wall and f*ck until filthy moans were the only things coming out of those tempting full lips."
Boy this book was a WHIRLWIND. Scifi-romance-Enemies to lovers- cat & mouse- Power Imbalance-wtf is going on journey. Besides the slow burn and unexpected lust and romance budding between the main characters you sit there and think WTF is happening through the entire book. Nothing is as it seems from the first chapter. If you think you know what is going on and who is who.... you don't lol. I didn't even think it was possible to figure out what is happening and who is lying in book 1 and I was right lol. There will be a book 2 that will guide us through the shit storm Aiden has gotten himself into. No one is who they say they are and there is a dark underbelly to the current times in this book. From Mistrust to broken hearts, this book covers it all. and gives us a a big of that spicy 🔪 and sizzling anticipated lust to keep you reading. Join Aiden of the journey he never wanted to be included in. Sometimes letting the person you love go....is exactly what you should do.
I received book 1 with an advance copy of book 2 and this is my honest review. 4* Great book! I’m calling it romantic suspense, though it takes some time to develop from mystery to conspiracy thriller, and eventually, to space opera. The tension ratchets up, a little at a time, both for the mystery and the romance. I really enjoyed the slow burn progress of Aiden and Darren circling each other, going from that initial spark of lust to something like respect and tentative trust, even as everything falls apart around them. We get heaps of unresolved sexual tension, which is super fun, and leads to some awesome hate sex. 😂 The ending is a soft, quiet, and hopeful cliffhanger. Got me in my feels and I liked it a bunch.
I still need to know about the sneaky shadow flitting around in the background of certain scenes. Also, I don’t trust Nyle. He’s a fantastic character, but he’s always conveniently in the right place at the right time and knows waaaay too much. Something’s up. I’ll admit, his grandma is kick ass and softened my suspicions a bit.
A few issues are worth pointing out. I think the book needs a professional editor to comb through for awkward phrasing. There are many small examples I could give, but the point is, they add up. Second issue is instant communication between Mars and Europa / Jupiter. As far as I can tell, human tech in the book hasn’t exceeded the speed of light. There should be about 30 minutes of light delay between those planets, varying widely based on positions in the solar system. Yes, I’m a sci-fi nerd complaining about the laws of physics in a sci-fi book. 😂 You just can’t make interplanetary phone calls without some hand waving FTL tech. Last issue is a “me” thing—it’s hard to sell the good old days of benevolent monarchy in today’s political climate. I focused on the crime, which is terrible, but I don’t have much sympathy for royalty in general.
None of this spoils a great read. 🩵 gays in space! On to book 2!
Following the death of his wife at the hands of infamous assassin Darren Howe, Aiden fakes credentials to get close to the mercenary. While he believes the guilty verdict handed over to Howe is true, things about the case, and Darren's sentence don't sit right with Aiden. Needing closure and wanting revenge, Aiden enters the Europa prison Darren's housed in as its new warden. Things, of course, unravel as new information comes out, and while Darren reaffirms the murder of Aiden's wife Claudia, Darren's left with new clues as to the circumstances that unfold a conspiracy that threatens to overtake the entire solar system.
I liked this book a lot. The attraction did not broker forgiveness. The revelations of Darren's involvement in his wife's death did not abate Darren's rage. There's room to grow in future books, and I'm eagerly awaiting where else this series takes us.
I did have a small complaint, and that's with Nyle's character. And it isn't so much the character himself but the word "twink" was used frequently to describe him. So often, in fact, that it stopped feeling like a word people use in real life.
Dnfed at 31% I really wanted to like this book because I though the concept sounded really good but something about it just didn’t work for me. I will start by saying that I don’t really read sci-fi so that could play a part. I think one of my main issues was that I couldn’t really connect with either of the main characters. It wasn’t that I disliked them, but I just didn’t really care about them. Where I had gotten in the book the romance hadn’t really started which for me was the main draw of the book. If you like very slow burn romance you might like it but it was just too slow burn for me. I was finding the mystery plot semi interesting but not enough to keep me reading. Also Darren has his own side plot but I wasn’t very interested in it at all. Also a minor nitpick is there is a character that is described far too many times as a twink. I’d it was just a few times it wouldn’t bother me but it seemed like it was the only word that was used to describe him. If you’re a fan of sci-fi or slow burn you might enjoy it, but I wasn’t for me.
J.F. Miev is a new to me author, but on the strength of reading this duet I'd definitely look out for more. This is quite a long book, and like with a lot of sci-fi there's a lot of world building but it never felt like too much. There was just enough to get a good sense of how this world is set up without too many details taking away from the story. It was hard to get to know Darren at all, until towards the end of the book (and without giving anything away), but I felt we got to know Aiden, or at least how he ended up where he was at the start of the book.
This is a very slow burn in terms of their relationship, this felt more like setting up the world and story and getting into how both ended up in the prison in the first place. There is somewhat of a relationship growing there albeit not grounded in anything real, but I liked the interplay between the two. I was drawn in by the story and really wanted to see how it all played out - and it wasn't at all how I expected.
I liked the side characters too, like Nyle and Bea and once the story got moving, I didn't want to put it down near the end there and couldn't wait to dive into the second as it was a real cliffhanger ending. This is best read just before the Valrais Legacy, there's a lot to take in and they work so well reading one after the other right away.
I received a free copy and this is my honest review.
Intriguing plot with unique elements, characters with raw emotions and their own problems/trauma, and an enemies-to-(soon-to-be-)lovers trope. I really like the storyline, and I love how the emotions were so well described.
Aiden is so hell bent on revenge and full of hate, he can’t think straight, and later on he realises how naive he was in thinking things would be so easy (lol). Darren has lost his family and had seen things that’s far too cruel for a child, but doesn’t show that vulnerable side of him, yet. I like them together, and hopefully, they can both heal, move on, and get their revenge. Nyle is a fun and interesting character too. I hope to see a bit more of him and the rest of the crew.
Some thoughts were a bit repetitive, but it didn’t bother me much because I can understand it when someone can only see red.
I can’t wait to see what secrets Sara will reveal in the next book!
I am a sucker for sci-fi that doesn't center on world building from the start, but allows the truth of the context emerge with the story.
This is a mix of sci-fi, thriller, and mystery, with a romance that is based first on hatred, revenge, and mistrust. The broad conspiracy that is at the heart of the book is interesting, but still a little vague. I assume it will become clearer in the next book. Aiden's personal quest of avenging his murdered fiancee is an obsession to him. It is fascinating the way he slowly realizes that Darren Howe who he's come to kill in revenge is also kindling an unexplainable attraction in him. Tension tension tension!
The book ends in a kind of limbo - not quite a cliffhanger, but with plenty to come in the next book. I didn't count it as a HEA or HFN, but I am perfectly willing to impatiently wait for what comes next.
I have not read many mysteries or sci-fi’s but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this story from beginning to end. There are twists and turns throughout which makes it entertaining. Great cast of characters with a hate / lust dynamic between the MC’s that can be felt right when they meet.
I will say that this is set up as a true series so if you like series to be completed before you begin reading hold on because this is just the start and this one ends on a cliff hanger so even though some answers are resolved there are many that are left unresolved and we need to wait for the next story to find out more. I am looking forward to finding out how this all plays out for Aiden and Darren.
The problem with seeking the truth is that when you go looking you often find things that you are not ready for even if you thought you were. It is not hard to feel for Aiden as he lost his fiancee and feels that justice was not served when Darren Howe is convicted but not executed. So he hatches a plan to exact the justice that he thought was not served only to find out that the focus of his ire is misplaced. He also finds himself drawn to Darren and fighting an attraction he was not prepared for. There were enough twists and turns, action and mystery to keep me reading and wondering to the last word. Now I am awaiting the next story to see what happens. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Aiden was a man who had the world at his feet. A beautiful fiance and a wonderful career. Until tragedy struck and he lost it all. Now he burns with an unquenched vengeance bordering on obsession. The object of his obsession is Darren, the man accused of and convicted of his fiancée's murder. Now he's made moves akin to a chess game and is in charge of the prison Darren is in. Things aren't adding up and as he slowly gets to know Darren he finds himself immersed in a game of political intrigue where nothing is as it seems, no one is to be trusted and even those closest to you are strangers. I must say, this has amazing world building and is extremely atmospheric. I really enjoyed the mystery and I can't wait for the ending.
Aiden & Darren Throughout much of the first half of the book, the sci-fi element is somewhat subtle and minor. That said, once things go massively downhill, it becomes far more obvious when relating to the sci-fi element.
The way these characters interact was consistently intense, especially as Aiden tried to reign in his anger toward Darren.
The shifting narrative in the storyline was interesting to follow. Each chapter with Aiden's POV was very intense and angry, and each chapter with Darren's POV was almost constantly flirty and humorous. It isn't until Aiden actually tries to move forward with his personal plan that everything changes and we learn far more about Darren (and even Aiden) than we ever thought we would.
This whole story was incredible and enthralling. It's been a long time since I've read a good suspenseful mystery, and the futuristic sci-fi element added an additional dynamic that fit perfectly into the complexity of the story. I was surprised how fast the story seemed to go after Aiden, Darren, and [another friend] escape and begin their information gathering. I'm really excited to see how the story rounds out in book 2, The Valrais Legacy. The evolving relationship between Aiden & Darren is bound to be continuously intense and emotional as it has been so far. And I'm really curious where, when, and how the plot will come full circle and bring down the bad guys (because that has to happen!).
I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
This book kept my interest from beginning to end, absolutely loved it. The characters were engaging, the futuristic world building was great and the suspense was nicely done. Aidan and Darren both are broken in their own ways due to tragedy in the past. Aidan really tries to dislike Darren but is smart enough to realize that they may both just be pawns in a bigger scheme. I wish the next book in the series was already out, I’m already looking forward to reading it! This author may be new but you will not be disappointed if you give this book a try. I received an arc via booksirens and this is my honest review.
I really wouldn't classify this book as a romance, its definitely a space mystery that has some pining and banter. I can see that the story is building up to have more romance later in the series. The story is well written and easy to follow, the problem is I just didn't really care about the characters or what happened to them. It took around until around 60% of the way into the book for for the plot to pick up, and at that point i had already guessed all the twists and reveals.
This book has a very strong plot with really surprising twists and turns! As the blurb says it's definitely a slow burn in terms of the romance, but any other way between Aiden and Darren would have been ridiculous, given the nature of their relationship. And the slow burn made it really satisfying when they finally gave in! Great world building, lots of tension between the main characters, and interesting side characters. Great dialogue, especially between MCs. If you like plot heavy stories, especially with sci-fi and crime thriller elements, you will really enjoy this one.
