Peter is eleven and has got a coveted place at Hillside Grammar School. Bewildered by a harsh new environment, he needs to escape being bullied. He tries fighting back, getting on the right side of his tormentors and, most successfully, exploiting his talent for climbing to make himself noticed. The twin towers on his school building give him a chance to impress the boys, but popularity comes with a price higher than he realizes. In the end he has to climb higher than he intended and deal with a savage outburst of violence that he has helped to provoke. This short novel is set in England in the 1950s and is intended for adults or older teenagers.
