Bimal Kar (Bengali: বিমল কর) was an eminent Bengali writer and novelist. He received 1975 Sahitya Akademi Award in Bengali, by Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, for his novel Asamay.

বিমল কর-এর জন্ম ৩ আশ্বিন ১৩২৮। ইংরেজি ১৯২১। শৈশব কেটেছে নানা জায়গায়। জব্বলপুর, হাজারিবাগ, গোমো, ধানবাদ, আসানসোল। কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্নাতক। কর্মজীবন: ১৯৪২ সালে এ. আর. পি-তে ও ১৯৪৩ সালে আসানসোলে মিউনিশান প্রোডাকশন ডিপোয়। ১৯৪৪-এ রেলওয়ের চাকরি নিয়ে কাশী। মণিলাল বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় সম্পাদিত ‘পরাগ’ পত্রিকার সহ-সম্পাদক, পরে ‘পশ্চিমবঙ্গ’ পত্রিকা ও ‘সত্যযুগ’-এর সাব-এডিটর। এ-সবই ১৯৪৬ থেকে ১৯৫২ সালের মধ্যে। ১৯৫৪-১৯৮২ সাপ্তাহিক ‘দেশ’ পত্রিকার সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিলেন। ১৯৮২-১৯৮৪ ‘শিলাদিত্য’ মাসিক পত্রিকার সম্পাদক। বহু পুরস্কার। আনন্দ পুরস্কার ১৯৬৭ এবং ১৯৯২। অকাদেমি পুরস্কার ১৯৭৫। কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় পুরস্কার ১৯৮১। দিল্লি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নরসিংহদাস পুরস্কার ১৯৮২। ‘ছোটগল্প—নতুন রীতি’ আন্দোলনের প্রবক্তা।

তুলনামূলক অন্যান্য কিকিরা কাহিনীর চেয়ে উত্তম। গল্পে সাসপেন্স ছিল পূর্ণমাত্রায়। কাহিনীর গোড়াপত্তন হয় তারাপদর সহকর্মী জগন্নাথের কাছে শুদ্ধানন্দের চিঠি দিয়ে। চিঠির বিষয় জগন্নাথকে হতচকিৎ করে,কেননা তার প্রয়াত মা কে নাকি শুদ্ধানন্দ স্বচক্ষে দেখা দিয়েছেন। বিষয় গুরুতর বুঝে কিকিরাকে সমস্যার সমাধানের জন্য তারাপদ অনুরোধ করে। এবং সুন্দর একটি সমাধান করেন কিঙ্কর কিশোর রায় ওরফে কিকিরা।

I quite like the Kikira stories of Bimal Kar. They have some good detection in them, they are not very flashy or flamboyant, but are always well written. The characters are not larger-than-life heroes, which is, to me, a plus.

In this specific story, Shuddhananda Pretasiddha o Kikira, the plot evolves through Kikira’s assistants, Chandan and Tarapada. Chandan has completed his medicine degree and is doing his apprenticeship, while Tarapada works in a company. His colleague Jagannath receives a strange letter from a mystery man called Shuddhananda Pretasiddha, who claims to move between the human world and the realm of spirits. In the letter, Shuddhananda says that he encountered Jagannath’s deceased mother in the spirit realm, who told him about hidden treasure that could make Jagannath rich. Even Jagannath thinks this is fraud, but being financially weak, he is tempted to believe it. Now Kikira, Tarapada and Chandan get into action, and unravels the truth.
The story flows nicely, and the detection is solid. I dislike when something new - which changes the face of the puzzle - is thrown at the reader at the very last moment, but that's how real detection is, and I don't mind how it came in this story.

মৃত ব্যক্তির আত্মার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে পারেন প্রেতসিদ্ধ কল্পবৃক্ষঃ। জগন্নাথের মায়ের আত্মা নাকি তাকে দেখা দিয়েছে, লুকনো সম্পত্তির হদিশ দিয়েছে। প্রকৃতপক্ষে সবই ভাঁওতা।
