The story involves two individuals struggling with their pasts in an arranged marriage. Verus, having lost a previous mate, is hesitant to open his heart again, while Arianwen must confront her history to break through the emotional barriers he has erected. Together, they navigate their social divides and personal traumas in hopes of finding love and healing.

I usually don't read novellas but this HIT THE SPOT! I love the first book so reading this novella cured my broken heart after the huge cliffhanger in TSWCU🥹 I enjoyed Verus and Ari relationship and the family dynamic with cute baby Aella 🥺 This book was wholesome and a perfect setup for the second book and I can’t wait to read it!!! 😁

Thank you Stephanie and Valerie for sending me an arc!

I received this book as an early release e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I adored this book. It was wholesome, healing and everything needed to get us to the final book in this little duet. It was well written, and I read this book in a day! It doesn’t have the same high stakes as the first book, but I feel that’s exactly what is needed. It’s a palate cleanser, preparing us for book 2. Overall, it was a wonderful read. We meet MMC Verus and get to know him as “Papa Goose” 🤍 and we get reacquainted with the FMC Arianwen. A heartwarming tale.

Valerie and Stephanie did a wonderful job bringing this book to life.

I was super excited to be a beta reader on this!! If you’re a fan of the first book The Stars Would Curse Us, then this is a must read!

In love with this world and these two characters. The character growth and dynamic between these two protagonists was so sweet and fun and I am very excited to read book two!

I went into this novella without knowing too much about it and I ended up enjoying it. The banter and dislike-to-love vibes between Ari and Verus was great and had a lot of fun with their story. I really came to appreciate them as a couple and liking Verus as his own character.

However, I think I would I have loved this book more if I wasn’t such a shipper of Ari and Wyn. I really did not want to like Verus and felt a bit torn at times between the two men. I did end up liking Verus but I am still holding out hope for a Wyn and Ari endgame though😅

All in all, I am happy that I got to visit this world again and it made me even more excited for the final book in the series.

Thank you to the authors for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you Silverflame Books (Steph & Val) for sending me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

This novella is set before book 1 HOWEVER it needs to be read after. It is not a spinoff/side quest but a true prequel to book 1. This story is a slow burn that follows two Argenti faes (from the court of water) that are both struggling with their pasts in an arranged marriage. Together they navigate their personal traumas and emotional barriers.

Unfortunately I can’t say more to avoid spoilers.

I may not have been the best person to read this one because I don’t like the miscommunication trope. I feel that if these two who were forced in an arranged marriage would’ve just talked about their pasts right from the get go, we could’ve avoided ALOT. Then we could’ve made room to focus/sharpen up the romantic aspect and made it more believable.

I hate the words husband and wife now. They were used TOOOOOOO MUCH and I wanted to throw my kindle EVERYTIME I read it.

Appreciated the world building, we got more details about the Court of Water and also we got to see a few things tie in to book 1 (Stella, the seashell and spear fishing).

Miscommunication ✔️
Fake dating ✔️
Arranged marriage ✔️
One bed ✔️
Cracked open door spice ✔️

***Thank you to Stephanie & Valerie for the eARC.***

So I can’t tell if this book got me out of a reading slump or put me in another one. It was so dang cute. This short & sweet novella really packs a punch. I didn’t want to stop reading once I started because I had to know what was going to happen.

Ari & Verus are just 🧑‍🍳 💋. They’re so cute! I love them. Two broken hearted souls who find each other. *swoon* 😍. I’m not sure if this was supposed to make me cry but I cried. Several times. I might just be sensitive though. The tension built between the two… 🙌!!!! Give me papa goose 🪿 forever! Verus was a dream. Instantly fell in love with him. My greedy self could have used a full novel of these two.

This novella is absolutely essential and shouldn’t be skipped when reading this series! Not only does it provide critical insight and answers that you’ll need before reading book two — but it’s also beautifully written with an emotional depth that’s rare for a novella. I love every single piece of this story. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

✨The Stars Couldn’t Break Us✨

“Was it possible for a heart that was ripped out to find its way back?”

My, my, my. This novella was so very much needed and appreciated after the end of The Stars Would Curse Us and it is a huge testament to Val and Steph’s writing to be able to heal a reader’s heart through this sweet story after that cliffhanger. 😂

In TSCBU, we are back with Ari after she returns from her matri-ritus, heartbroken and with a secret. She is unable to speak about her past due to her oath and, despite her sudden reappearance, she is still to go through with her previous arranged marriage. However, Verus equally doesn’t want this marriage as his heart was taken to the city when his first love was forced away. Together, they ride the tides of a tremulous relationship that they thought would work perfectly with distance and little communication. However, forced proximity, compassionate hearts. and the fates had a different idea.

An idea that maybe you don’t have to be whole to find love.

That maybe two broken pieces could fit together more perfect than the whole.

This story made my heart feel all the things: heart ache, grief, fear, hope, joy, and contentment. And I must be honest that the last line brought tears to my eyes. I truly didn’t think anyone could get better that Ari’s first love but this story won me over. It’s almost… more real than other relationships we read about and thus almost felt more meaningful in the end.

Tropes you may find in this novella are: Arranged marriage, second chance, forced proximity, grumpy x sunshine, 🌶️🌶️, he cooks, elemental magic, underwater world, heartbreak and healing.

I’m beyond thankful to get to be a part of Val and Steph’s street and arc team. I’m grateful for the opportunity to read this gifted arc and I’m so eager for book 2 in November! Though, my heart IS nervous.

The Stars Couldn’t Break Us is a sweet novella about Arianwen and Verus, and the early months of their arranged marriage.

“The stars tried to break us, but what if we prove them wrong?”

Arianwen returns from her disappearance during her mari-ritu carrying more than one secret. Unable to speak of her time with Wynn because of her sworn oath, she assumes Verus and his family must have called off the wedding. Verus watched the love of his life get called by the Iris in the draft, headed to Prisma where they would never see each other again. Knowing he could never give his heart fully to Arianwen, they agree to keep their distance, but keep up appearances, and raise Arianwen’s child together. Both broken by their pasts, can they find a way to let each other in?

This was a sweet novella and a quick read. I really enjoyed this story, as it bridges the Arianwen’s story in Book 1 with Aella’s. We see a bit of what happened in the years between, and learn a bit more about the Iris and the resistance. The love story of Verus and Arianwen was nicely done - I didn’t want to like them as a couple initially, having just read Arianwen and Wynn’s story, but you really see how hard they worked for their marriage, and how love develops despite their distance. It felt really real - their struggles, their fears, and the vulnerability it takes to open yourself up to someone. It was a sweet and cozy story, and fills in some of the gaps from the timeline in Book 1. It also sets us up nicely for Book 2. I enjoyed it quite a bit and look forward to seeing more from this world!

Thank you so, so much to Stephanie Combs and Valerie Rivers for an electronic advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own!

An arranged marriage that is anything but a fairytale.

Arianwen, an independent free spirit, is reluctant to tie herself to any male, has no choice but to follow her parents' wishes and marry a complete stranger to reclaim her family's reputation.

Verus is doing what his duties entail and marries Ari. Accepting Aella as his own, he is willing to do his best as a father though he struggles as a husband.

Two broken souls trying to find their place in the uncertain emotions of their marriage. My heart broke for them at the loneliness Ari and Verus felt though they were only sitting a foot apart. They really had to work hard for their HEA.

Read this story after you read The Stars Would Curse Us to appreciate this novella that packs a punch to your heart.

"The Stars Couldn't Break Us" is a novella set in "The Stars Would Curse Us" series. It's essential to read the first book before diving into this novella, not just for the emotional impact but because all the worldbuilding and plot setup is established in "The Stars Would Curse Us." This background knowledge is crucial for the novella to make sense.

I'll avoid specific details about the plot or characters to prevent any spoilers for those who haven't finished the first book. The twist at the end of book one is too good to be spoiled!

That said, I enjoyed the very slow burn of this novella. However, I found there was a bit too much reliance on the miscommunication trope. The same level of angst could have been achieved if the MMC had explained his situation to the FMC earlier. This would have avoided the unnecessary issues caused by miscommunication but still provide the emotional angst, tension and slow burn of the two main characters not being together.

Despite this, the novella provided backstory and an emotional hit that sets the stage perfectly for the concluding book of the series. If you're invested in the series, "The Stars Couldn't Break Us" is a must-read that hits the spot in expanding the story and deepening the characters.

The more I read and think about this series the more in love I fall! After watching Ari and Wynn’s story unfold in TSWCU I was unsure how I would feel about her being with another MMC. However, the way Stephanie and Valerie told this piece to the story was so beautiful. Finding love after heartbreak can be so difficult and watching both Ari and Verus navigate their relationship was so raw and real. From their sense of duty to their families and being thrust into an arrangement when both of their hearts had just been shattered to finding themselves separately and how they fit together, I couldn’t put it down! I will be forever dissecting theories until the next book is out!

This is a fantastic read!

Story here is a very crucial one, and one that should be read after reading book 1. This is not a side quest/spin off novella but in true sense a book 1.5.

The writing is as always flawless and I wouldn’t expect anything less from this wonderful duo!

ARC Review ✨

Ahhh!! I didn’t think my heart could recover from the end of TSWCU, but this Novella following Arianwen’s love story was exactly what I needed!

I absolutely adore the family element: marriage & a baby. I feel this is not often represented in books from the parents POV so this was so good for me to read as a current mama with a baby.

Such a cozy Romantasy that I thoroughly enjoyed! 🥹💞

This book had everything. After the end of book 1, I wondered how everything was going to fall into place and this didn't disappoint.
I love that 2 broken hearts could eventually heal enough to keep going.
I eagerly await the next book

Such a great story with a little bit of spice!

This story kept me entertained and I loved learning about the history of some of the characters from The Stars Would Curse Us.

This is the story behind Aella’s parents and how they came to be a family unit.

It’s basically an enemies to lovers story and it was such a sweet read!

Now I’m even MORE excited for November when the conclusion to this series releases 😍

I devoured this book. I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to read this ARC. I loved the first book so much and this novella did not disappoint. How many of us do not wind up marrying our first love? Finding love again after heart break is something so many of us can relate to, but it is not a topic I have seen so expertly depicted in a Romantasy. I connected to these characters on a deep level and I cannot wait to continue on this journey!

Thank you Steph and Val for the ARC!
This was the perfect length novella; long enough to tide us over to the next book but short enough to keep us wanting to go back. The amount of chemistry and longing and passion and detail that is crammed in here is incredible and makes for such a beautiful story about two broken hearts trying to restablish their place in the world, and perhaps with each other.
I absolutely cannot wait for the conclusion to this mesmerising story.

I received book 1 in a giveaway (see review), and knew I had to return, so when I saw they did a novella to tie us over until book 2, I immediately preordered it!

It is important to note that you HAVE to have read book 1 before this novella otherwise you’ll spoil things for yourself, which would be a great shame as it’s such a great reveal.

I unfortunately cannot say much without spoiling it, so the next slide can be a bit spoilery, so please skip if you intend on reading this series!
In short, I really find the characters interesting, complex and realistic. I really find myself engrossed in this world and invested in what’s going to happen. As I know this was a discussion point somewhere else, I love the market scenes, because it conveys normality and it’s such a great way to establish a culture and who the characters are.

I am not usually a fan of pregnancy stories and stories that focus on motherhood - no shade to mothers, I’ve got nothing but respect for them. I am not a mother, and I’m purposely childfree so these stories have little appeal to me and often I just find them repulsive - not this one. There was little focus on the pregnancy itself, it was subtle hints to being very hungry. No mention of the birth, and the kid features as more of a reference than an integral character - which I really appreciated. The focus was on the main couple and their story, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I’m for sure pre-ordering book 2 as soon as I possibly can, because I need to know what happens next. That cliffhanger definitely makes me want to come back.

Did I absolutely binge this book in less than a day? Yes. Did I immediately go and preorder a hardback copy straight after? Yes, yes I did.

The Stars Couldn’t Break Us by Valerie Rivers and Stephanie Combs is novella set in the same world as The Stars Would Curse Us, and is written as a prequel/companion to it. This review is going to be intentionally vague because so much of what I want to say will directly spoil book 1.

I absolutely loved this book, and being able to delve further into Arianwen’s story was amazing. All of the little nods and connections to book 1 either made me smile or gasp (or both, to be honest). Sterling and Stella have my heart.

It was definitely a cozy fantasy romance read, and left me feeling satisfied after finishing. I just wish that it was longer! Which defeats the purpose of being a novella, I know 😂 Honestly, I’m still not over the ending of book 1, and The Stars Couldn’t Break Us helped tide me over until a little until book 2 releases later this year.

You definitely need to read The Stars Would Curse Us first, and I implore you to add them both to your TBR. How beautiful is the cover too?! Book 1 is just as stunning, and I’ll be taking so many pictures of the physical copies when they arrive.

Here are some of the tropes to entice you further if my (probably) slightly unhinged review wasn’t enough:
✨ arranged marriage
✨ underwater world
✨ only one seahorse
✨ sworn off love
✨ he cooks

There are a lot of things that I love about this book. But I think there's one aspect that really need to be touched on. In romantasy, we always have the expectation of a happily ever after. That the leading couple will end up together. And in this case, with Ari and Wynn... they don't.

As Ari would say, the stars had different plans for her. She instead ends up in an arranged marriage to a man, Verus, who she gradually opens up to over time. It's both heartbreaking and beautiful, and love-after-loss is a topic I wished more romantasies explored.

Unlike the high-stakes action of The Stars Would Curse Us, this book is slow-paced, cozy, and full of cute, subtle moments with themes of loss, heartbreak, and healing. The authors' descriptions of the Argenti's underwater world are mesmerizing, and as someone from Florida they make me long to read this series sitting on a beach.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read, and am really looking forward to the series' epic conclusion in November.

I would first like to thank the authors for the advanced copy of this book! Thank you for trusting me with your work before its release!
*If you have not read book one, The Stars Would Curse Us, please read before this novella, as the book contains spoilers for Book One.*

I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed this peek into the start of Verus and Arianwen’s marriage! I loved the way their marriage unfolded like a rose opening its soft petals even as it grew from a thorny stem. The way Verus constantly supported Arianwen’s passions, interests and even risky plans, despite his desire to remain detached was my favorite part. (I am an absolute sucker for a broody, smitten male- bonus points for a doting father!!) I also adored seeing the strong foundations of bravery and integrity that Arienwen’s character clearly fostered in Aella! I found this novella to be a perfect way to fold the backstory I didn’t even know I needed into this amazing series.) November (and the release of The Stars Could Save Us) cannot come soon enough!

Short and sweet, leaving me wanting even more…

The story of Arianwen and Verus is one of heartache, sorrow and having the strength to move forward and forge a whole new path. These two broken souls, stole my heart and had left me wanting waaaaaaay more. The interaction between the two was beautifully written and even though Verus is “loathsome, irritating and disgustingly handsome”, he grew on me and a certain someone…. The Stars Couldn’t Break Us is the perfect novella to tide you over after reading The Stars Would Curse Us and leaves you eager to get your hands on Book Three.

If you love novellas that include the following, then this is the one for you.
🌊 An arranged marriage
🌊 Fake getting along
🌊 A papa goose who cooks and is swoon worthy
🌊 Fae, who live in the water
🌊 Fantasy Romance that is tastefully steamy and swoon worthy
🌊 Underwater World
🌊 A bit of Intrigue and suspense

I highly recommend getting The Stars Couldn’t Break Us. You’ll be glad you did!!!

I received an advanced copy of this book, however my opinions are my own.

The Stars Couldn’t Break Us was a sweet little novella following the story of Arianwen and Verus set after the events of Ari’s portion of The Stars Would Curse Us. It was a super quick read and I really enjoyed it. It was a little slice of domestic life that works as a perfect palate cleanser ahead of the next (and I believe final) book.

I went into this novella with a bit of apprehension because I really, really loved Ari and Wynn’s relationship in book one. It crushed me that we didn’t get to see them together for longer, but Verus really managed to win me over. I loved getting to see their relationship develop while they both worked through their separate grief.

I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book in the series. I genuinely cannot wait to get back to Aella and Kal (and also to see more of Wynn).

Thank you so much to Stephanie Combs and Valerie Rivers for the ARC of The Stars Couldn’t Break Us. All opinions are, of course, my own.

I was so lucky to get an e-ARC of this book (thanks Steph & Val!)

If you haven't read book 1, definitely do that before picking this one up. This story picks up from the end of book 1 and gives us a glimpse of what happened during the time off page. While Book 1 follows 2 characters, this book focuses on just one, but it gives a lot of insight into the lives of both. I don't want to give away too much and spoil the first book :)

This is not a traditional love story, but is romantic in its own right because it follows two people who are doing their absolute best to survive the hand they've been dealt. At first, they try to survive separately, but eventually realize that they are stronger together. And they learn that two broken hearts can make a whole.

I can't wait for the story to continue because I am so invested in this story and these characters! This is a shorter novella so it was a super quick and fun read. And DO NOT SKIP THIS to jump into book 2 when it releases. Seriously, it adds to much to the overall story line!

We met Arianwen in Book 1. Arianwen is a feisty human who stands up for herself. I loved everything about her. Verus was so grumpy and protective but stubborn as well. Both struggle with the arranged marriage. Verus lost his previous mate and Arianwan is heartbroken with child.

The world building is gradual and easy to follow and I adore all the main characters and seeing their arcs as the book progresses. I also really enjoyed the dual POV and the shorter chapters.

Things to expect:

✨ Slow burn
✨ Arranged Marriage
✨ Dual POV
✨ Forced Proximity
✨ Grumpy x Sunshine

I received a free e-ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Huge thanks to Stephanie and Valerie for this ARC!
