Elflaine, the fabled faerie realm, was supposed to be a myth. Ailia Danu certainly never expected her older sister, Elideh, to find it.
After Elideh's disappearance into Elflaine, Ailia must uncover the long-buried history of the faeries, learn to control her newly-awakened magic, and navigate fabled creatures dragged straight out of Scottish lore. And above all else, Ailia must find her sister.
Luckily, Reed, a handsome witch from Ailia's past, insists on accompanying her on her quest. Their plans are complicated by the sudden intrusion of a fae warrior, Callum, on his own mission to find three elusive artifacts.
Can Ailia, Reed, and Callum overcome the obstacles keeping them from Elideh? Or will it be too late?

“Summon me? For fuck's sake, Reed. You could just say that you would call me. I get that we are on a quest with faeries and magic, but come on.” -Ailia
The characters are really what drives this story and they’re perfectly flawed. This made them both relatable and believable. My absolute favorite is that while Ailia is clearly going to be powerful, she didn’t just wake up that way. We’re seeing her work to become something more. It is also taking time, and it’s not instant. This really enhanced my reading experience. The relationships between each character are well written, and there’s a beautiful depth to them. Their interactions are entertaining and definitely keep the pages turning. There’s pining all around, and a bit of a slow burn romance.
This book was magical in more than one way. I absolutely loved the magical elements in this story. There was fae, a demon dog, Kelpies, a dragon! Honestly it was jam packed, and yet everything, just fit. Nothing felt contrived or out of place.
“If the fates allow it, make a place for dragons to be free. We tire of hiding and want to live in peace.”
I truly hope that we get to see more of these mysterious characters we met on their adventure (cough dragon cough) in the next book. There is still a lot of mystery to be solved! I can also see how maybe she will find her sister next, and I cannot wait to see where the story goes.
Thank you to Haley Hamilton, the author, for my arc copy in exchange of my honest review. 💚
I loved everything about this book. The characters were written extremely well. The plot was everything you could hope for. It has everything. Romance, family bonds, and a badass FMC that won't let anything stop her, it involves witches, dragons, and so much more the adventure they all go on had me hooked from page one highly recommend ~arc review~
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - My first ARC read!!!!! I am OBSESSED with this story! It had all of my favourite tropes, and all the different fantasy themes just meshed so well together. I cannot wait to have a physical copy in my hands, and to read the next story that Haley releases (it cannot come fast enough)😭💛
This book was not my cup of tea. I wanted to love this book so much. Many of my friends really loved it and recommended it non-stop, and for the right person, that is wonderful. I love Scottish folk lore, I love fantasy romances. It was all of that. However, that wasn't enough to keep my interest, I dnfed it at 32%. I found myself making excuses not to read it. It was far too slow paced for my liking. This book was quite predictable as well, and I need to not know what's going to happen right from the beginning. That being said, the book itself is stunning, the characters are well developed, and I can see why people love this book. I am just not one of them, and that's ok. I wish Haley all the best!
I was graciously gifted an arc of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book was magical ✨ I was excited to read a book based on Scottish folklore and it delivered. There were fae, witches, dragons, magic, descriptions of pastries that made me really hungry, a strong and intelligent fmc, and big fluffy demon dogs 🐕. I mean what more could you want? Oh also there was romance 💕. And it felt like walking through the set of lotr barefoot. Iykyk. The author clearly did her research for this book and every character served a purpose. The Scottish folklore was interesting and made me want to do some research of my own.
The writing is well done, the plot carries you gently along, the characters are well rounded, the romance was slow burning, and you’ll be just as invested in Ailia uncovering the secrets of Elflaine as I was. You’ll want to read this book with a cozy blanket and a cup of tea. And bonus points if it’s raining. 🌧️☕️📖
Can’t wait for the second book! Thank you so much Haley for the arc! 💚
The Elflaine Chronicles: Ballad of Dawn by Haley Hamilton is a book that will utterly enchant you, and you will find it hard to part from it; I know I did. I really enjoyed Haley's writing style; it was whimsical and poetical yet never overbearing. It set the perfect stage to introduce us to the story of two sisters, Elideh and Ailia, and their path to destiny.
They are both scholars and researchers of folklore and myths. When Elideh discovers a way to the fairie kingdom of Elflaine in her search for their heritage and mysteriously goes missing, Ailia is thrust into a thrilling adventure to rescue her. But, this mission is not just about saving her sister; it's a journey of self-discovery, uncovering hidden truths, and facing unexpected challenges. Ailia won't be alone; she has her witch friend Reed by her side and the unexpected company of Callum, a Fae warrior. The trio will face not only mythical creatures but also the complexities of their own emotions, adding a layer of depth to their quest.
I loved the trio and its dynamics, both good and bad. It felt like the three of them were meant to travel this road together, set their differences aside, and dig deep into their emotions. I am not usually a fan of love triangles, but here it worked. I understood both Reed and Callum, and my heart ached for them. Still, each of them, Ailia, Reed, and Callum, are set to have their roles, and I feel they will settle into them perfectly with time.
I loved Reed's need to protect Ailia, even though it was sometimes overbearing. Callum's instincts were different; he wanted to protect her and teach her to defend herself, which was the main difference between the two males. I am sure you will enjoy their connections as much as I did.
Ailia, our protagonist, is a remarkable female character—strong, determined, and yet, humble enough to acknowledge her need to learn and grow into her newly discovered powers. Her journey is not just about survival, but about embracing her strength and potential, inspiring us all to do the same.
While we still don't know the full extent of both sisters' powers and what fate has intended for them, we know they are essential in what's to come. The ending left me speechless and yearning to know what was coming next. I need to know more and cannot wait to find it all out in the sequel. Thank you, Haley, for gifting me the ARC; I was honoured!
Elflain Chronicles will gift you - a story set in modern-day Scotland - Scottish folklore and mythology - witches/faes/mythical creatures - unique bonds - fated mates - love triangle - coming into your own powers - epic quests - no spice but so much tension - lyrical storytelling, and so much more!
This book throws you into an incredible adventure that I hoped would never end, set in Scotland and rooted in Scottish folklore. The characters are so three-dimensional, with depth, substance, and likable personalities. The whole story is believable, with Scottish legend, history, and ballads embedded throughout which enhanced how real and grounded it felt. It felt like I was with the characters on their quest, rather than spectating the action. The characters communicated properly, with any disagreements swiftly resolved rather than dragged out or sulked over. The interactions with numerous mythical creatures is meaningful and serves a purpose, rather than just being a decoration to prove it's a fantasy book. You can tell the author put so much love and research into this book, and I am really looking forward to the next book! I would really recommend this to fantasy and folklore lovers, especially those who are interested in Scottish folklore.
The book contains moderate violence and references to blood, but nothing too graphic.
How is it I already miss these characters and I’ve only known them for one book!? Haley did such an amazing job on this PUNISHINGLY slow burn Romantasy.
Set in Scotland, sisters Elideh and Ailia study witches and faeries. When Elideh goes missing after finding a way into Elflaine, Ailia and Reed, her witch-friend/ex-boyfriend and now guardian, set off to find an entrance of her own. But when Ailia finds herself suddenly brimming with magic and Reed locked into an oath with a handsome fae to find 3 hidden objects, they realize something much larger and much darker is on the horizon…. And it’s sights are set on Ailia.
Ballad of Dawn gave me huge Emily Wilde vibes, but made witchier, more magical, and with a super angsty love triangle. We get to experience and learn lots of deep Scottish faerie lore and landmarks. Our Guardian, Reed, is a super kind, protective, golden retriever while Callum, our mysterious Fae warrior, is our broody yet reluctantly caring cinnamon roll. They are each SO WELL fleshed out and honestly both so deserving of love. Ailia is strong, sassy, compassionate and empathetic. She’s not afraid to set her boundaries even next to two handsome and protective magical men staring her down.
Tropes you may find in Ballad of Dawn are one bed, fated mates, unique bonds, elemental magic, witches/fae/magical creatures, Scottish lore and mythology, forced proximity, males with accents, love triangle, no spice but allllllll the tension, bodyguard, trainer x trainee, comforts her after nightmares, moderate language, and a cliffhanger.
I was honestly so drawn into this, wanting to know each next step and barely setting this down. I mean, how could you with Reed and Callum? I am so thankful for this gifted arc from Haley and DYING for book two.
~twas gifted this book as an ARC by the author for an honest review ~ 4.5! I don’t know how to even describe my current feelings about this book other than delightful. Loved the journey each character goes on. I was always on my toes, guessing what would happen next. I definitely audibly gasped at a few parts because I didn’t see the thing coming. This book was not overwrought in terms of writing, and was beautifully written. It was straight to the point in a lot of ways, and I truly appreciated how adult the characters behaved with each other. I know there were secrets, but they often confronted each other to try and discuss their feelings. No miscommunication tropes to further the plot, just fantasy and adventure! Highly recommend this to fantasy and romance lovers. I already need the second one!!
Whew I was not expecting such an edge of your seat ending! This book is Emily Wilde meets Bryce Quinlan. Ailia, the FMC is a scholar of witches. And when her sister, Elideh a scholar of faeries, goes missing the series of events that follows are exciting, nerve racking and beautiful. The growth Ailia experiences in this first book is inspiring. The two MMCs and their devotion to her is well done and authentic. The world building is a lovely nod to Scotland and faerie lore. I am anxiously awaiting book two.
CW: some mild violence, references to prior de@ths/toxic relationships
Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “The Elflaine Chronicles” releases June 20, 2024!
So, uh, yeah, I need book 2. Immediately.
When her older sister, Elideh, sends her a cryptic message telling her to get to Scotland immediately, Ailia isn’t sure what to expect. Certainly not a note saying Elideh has run off to find an entrance to Elflaine, the land of the faeries. Except, that’s exactly what she found, and now Ailia is determined to find her own way in and to be reunited with her sister. As Ailia uncovers more fantastical things than she ever expected in this world, a darkness she never knew existed creeps closer, and she’ll need all the help she can get to find her way through.
I sat this book down and walked away from it exactly 2 times once I started reading. The first was because it was 5 am, I had work the next day, and my contacts were threatening to fall out of my face. The second was because I realized I only had 20% of the book left and I wasn’t emotionally prepared to be done with it yet. Obviously I did, indeed, come back to finish the book, and it was so worth it. I’m already trying to decide how soon is too soon to read it again.
Everything about this book was amazing, but the best part for me personally was the setting and the world building. The story takes place in modern-day Scotland, which is already a fantastic location for any book. The author then proceeded to wrap one of the most magic-soaked histories of any real world location in an incredible web of actual, tangible magic. There’s elemental magic, fae magic, witches, and mythological creatures, all backed up by the actual stories and myths of those lands. For someone who loves everything about those tales, seeing them reimagined and brought to life in what would otherwise be a strictly urban fantasy setting was the exact thing I never knew I needed. I’ve been talking my family’s ears off about the story, and a huge part of that is because of this background. That blend of historical myth and real-world basis makes it feel like you’re living the story alongside the characters, and it was incredible.
Speaking of characters, I love them. We’ve got 3 main characters, and although the story is told in 3rd person, the focus shifts between the 3, giving us all that delicious insight into what’s going on in their heads. There’s sass, there’s banter, there’s kindness and love and comfort. This story has it all, and I loved every little bit of each of the three MCs. Also, have you heard of a slow burn? Because this author went, ‘slow? They like it slow? I’ll give them glacial, and they’ll love it.’ And I did. Tension isn’t even the right word for it; it’s the *anticipation.* It grows and you can see it and by the end of things you’ll be screaming at the pages. It was such a perfect buildup; it didn’t feel rushed or insta-love (not that we don’t love a good immediate attraction) and it didn’t feel like it dragged on for no reason. It feels exactly right for the characters and the setting, and it was really sweet to watch.
Something that drives me nuts in a book is inconsistent pacing; something ends up too fast or too slow, or all jumbled up in various speeds and it puts me right off the whole book. Fortunately, that wasn’t a problem this particular book had. The pacing was fantastic. It was the perfect blend of fast action and forward motion within the plot interspersed with slower, character-based moments that allowed us to see and connect with our MCs. I had absolutely no issue staying fully engaged in the story the entire time, and, as I mentioned, I hated when I did have to put it down. There’s this big, overarching story that plays out slowly with these smaller, still important, milestones in between that make it feel like things are progressing and growing while still embracing that feeling of having so much left to do. It’s also not a predictable plot; while there are some things you could probably guess if you read a lot of fantasy, they were so well-placed and executed and were combined with so many other surprises that it never felt stale or overdone.
In case the super-long review didn’t make it abundantly clear, I adored this story. I can guarantee I’m going to read it again, and I’m going to be badgering all my friends to read it immediately so I can yell about it with them. This is book 1 in a series, and while I would say this particular installment is probably fine for older YA readers and up, I don’t know if that will remain consistent throughout later books, so I’d probably say it’s an NA+ story. Whatever it is, it’s amazing. If you like Scottish/Celtic folklore, specifically the stories of the faeries and the fae, if you like witchy, elemental magic, if you like incredible, intelligent heroines who are learning to get out of their comfort zones, or if you just like stories that have very large not-quite-dogs as companions, then you’re going to love this book.
Haley Hamilton had me ensnared from the moment I started reading this book! Ballad of Dawn, the first instalment in The Elflaine Chronicles is one of those magical reading experiences that you just have to go on. There are witches, faeries, dragons and more... Throw in Scottish vibes and folklore, a wander between realms, kickass FMC and some hunky, grumpy and protective MMCs, sisterly ride-or-💀 loyalty and I found myself in bookish fantasy heaven!

There are sooo many things to say about Ballad of Dawn, but they'd all be spoilers and I just won't ruin a book for you guys like that!
Sending my thanks to Haley for sending me the ARC for Ballad of Dawn ✨ This is an ARC review, however I am honest to a fault! My opinions are my own and cannot be bought. There were no incentives offered or received in exchange for this post.
This book was SO good! The story, the ballad, and the adventure of the characters really had me glued to the pages! It’s not often you get to read a book based on ballad translations and Scottish history/folklore.
This book is just 🤌🏻 It has the cozy fae fantasy vibes of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries in the setting of Brave. Throw in some romance, humor, and a dragon and you’ve got the Elfaine Chronicles. (Honestly do I need to say more?)
Now I’m not going to lie, I was worried for the first few chapters. There was a *certain* character who I just couldn’t stand (I still despise him tbh 😂). But I put my faith in Haley and MAN was it worth it.
This book feels like you’re climbing a mountain and then right as you reach the peak the ground falls out from under you. Am I upset I don’t actively have the next book in my hands? Yes. Am I excited to see where this series goes? Absolutely.
I think my favorite thing about this book is we get a female lead in her late twenties 🙌🏻 Not all fantasy books need to have main characters still going through puberty (don’t get me wrong I love my YA and NA fantasies, but it’s nice to have some variety)
Actually I lied. I think my favorite thing about this book is Callum 😍
If you’re a fan of fun and adventurous stories with lovable characters and folklore then you’re not going to want to miss this book. It comes out on June 20th!
Haley, thank you so much for sending me an ARC copy. You’ve created a stunning world and I was sad to leave it, can’t wait to see what happens next!

“His heart might had stopped at her suggestion. As long as he was living and breathing, that would not be any version of her future.”
The book was captivating from the beginning, but started a little slow. Usually I love good world building, and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get into the book when I knew I was enjoying it?! (Spoiler: it was a reading slump. 🥲) I took a break, came back to it, and promptly devoured the rest of the book.
The main character Ailia is on a quest to rescue her missing sister, who has found a way into the faerie realm of Elflaine. She embarks with her witch friend Reed, but things become more complicated when they cross paths with a fae, Callum, who is on his own mission to find three lost artifacts.
It reminded me a little of Nora Robert’s Dragon Heart Legacy series (which I love). I LOVED the Scottish lore, the history, and the interwoven magic & magical creatures. Ailia spoke to me so much as a character, she is generally an introvert, non risk taker that is suddenly thrown into craziness. I really enjoyed watching her gain confidence and spread her wings as the story progressed.
I loved watching the friendship/love between Ailia, Reed, and Callum grow and change. Reed and Callum are such stark differences of each other and it was interesting to see which of their characteristics Ailia needed from the beginning, compared to at the end of the book. (I won’t spoil much besides saying that.)
Overall I loved the book. I can’t wait for #2, and I really can’t wait for my hard copy to come. 💗
- coming into her powers and they are miiiighty - Fae and witches and lore - beautiful Scottish adventure - love triangle that is soooo swoony - fated mates and magic - ancient castles, mossy forests, dark oceans vibes - great pacing - only one bed situation - only one boat situation
I loved this story. THE LOVE TRIANGLE ANGST. THE BONDS THAT CANT BE BROKEN. THE LOVE THAT IS INEVITABLE. Ohhhhh my it was so fun, and such an adventure! It’s well written, the dialogue is believable and fun, and the characters have depth and real issues that were relatable. The romance is very heavy in the plot, but who would have it any other way?? I love the setting in the Scottish countryside, loved the inns, loved the food. Callum and Reed are beautiful specimens, and their relationship with Ailia is so wonderful. I loved seeing her bond and grow with Callum, loved that Reed is her undying protector. Ailia coming into her own in the Scottish countryside, her powers are just cool. Loved the use of Fae lore, and felt it was weaved really well through the book, and I’m a sucker for fairytales made real - this one delivered. HIGHLY recommend!!!
SYNOPSIS: There is magic still, in Scotland. Elflaine, the fabled faerie realm, was supposed to be a myth. Ailia Danu certainly never expected her older sister, Elide, to find it. After Elide's disappearance into Elflaine, Ailia must uncovered long-buried history of the faeries, learn to control her newly awakened magic and navigate fabled creatures dragged out of Scottish lore.

Two sisters- a shared fate. Scotland, witches, fae & magic puppies?! Sign me UP!
I'm sitting here wondering how I can personally create a bargain to enter this world & live in it. This has moved into my top 5 favorite fantasy books of 2024 this year. I cannot WAIT for the second installment because I have so many feelings over these characters.
-I really enjoyed myself in this book. At first I felt like it was a bit slow but that does happen a lot with the first book of fantasy series with the buildup of the world and the characters. Once I reached the halfway point of the book, I was fully immersed and so intrigued. The quest was great and I loved discovering new things about the world and about the magic. -These characters were amazing. Ailia was really sweet and kind, and her relationship with Reed is quite cute as well but even though they are quite cute together, I do prefer her with Callum. Is it because I actually saw their development? Maybe. But I felt like they really connect well and the way their relationship developed was so sweet. -The ending really does make me want to read more. I already want to read the next book when this one isn’t technically even published yet. Twists and turns, cliffhanger. I’m so intrigued.
This is a debut novel from @haley.h.writes and it did not disappoint! I really enjoyed this book! It takes place in Scotland and I loved learning Scottish folklore and ballads. The setting felt so cozy and magical.
This book follows Ailia who is trying to save her older sister Elideh who managed to find an entrance to the fairie realm of Elflaine but then didn’t return...
This book has witches, fae, a loveable dog-like companion, quests, and other magical creatures. We also quickly learn that there is more to Ailia than meets the eye.
There is a bit of a love triangle, and the two male characters definitely give off “touch her and die” and “burn the world down for her” vibes. There is the start of a slow burn romance in this book (no spice) that I found really sweet and I am definitely rooting for.
The book starts off a bit slower while building the backstory and developing the characters but that didn’t bother me at all. It then quickly picks up and I couldn’t put it down (read the last 50% in one sitting)! The ending though - I need book 2 immediately!
“Nothing could keep you from me-not dreams, not visions, not realms, and not darkness. I will always find you.”
This romantasy novel is set in modern day Scotland with rich Scottish folklore. I loved the world and story building of this novel. As most epic fantasies, it begins slow while developing, but stick in there it is worth it. The quest to find Elideh, Ailia’s older sister, begins the novel and the reader learns more about the sisters’ relationship and the magic system as the novel progresses. The FMC, Ailia, is so relatable! I could easily picture myself in her shoes. She doesn’t begin with magic, but has to train, work and learn. The MMC’s are both a fae warrior and a witch. Callum is for sure my favorite! I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. It does have a cliffhanger ended and I absolutely can not wait until book two!
I was gifted this book from the author Haley Hamilton in return for my honest review.
“‘Nothing could keep you from me—not dreams, not visions, not realms, and not darkness. I will always find you,’ he whispered into her hair.”
This is a ROCKSTAR debut! Thank you so much to the author for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. Honestly, you need to add it to your list. It is action-packed from the beginning. The twists and turns keep you engaged until the very last line. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I am begging @haley.h.writes to release the second book to us because I HAVE TO KNOW. 😭
Read if you like •romantasy •fantasy •Scottish lore •forests & beaches •elemental magic •fae & witches •cozy inns & ancient ruins •fated mates •slow burn •one bed •no spice •mythical creatures •quests with some mystery •oxygen 😊
The faerie realm of Elflaine was supposed to be lost to time, but when Elideh Danu disappears on the Summer Solstice while out looking for an entrance to the realm, her younger sister Ailia Danu will stop at nothing to find her. Joining up with her ex-boyfriend witch, Reed, a fae named Callum, and a cù-sìth (fairy dog) named Storm, Ailia will scour the modern Scottish countryside looking for a way to get her sister back. Battling dangerous obstacles, mythical creatures, and the new bloom of her own mysterious magic, Ailia will stop at nothing to save her sister.
The Elflaine Chronicles: Ballad of Dawn by Haley Hamilton was, on paper, the perfect read for me. Brimming with Scottish and faerie folklore, I went into this book super excited. I will say that the plot is excellent. Where it struggled was some of the character work, writing style, and editing. Let’s jump in. Let’s talk about some of the editing issues. There were a few mistakes that I noticed, the most glaring being that Reed told Ailia that “fifty years ago” his mother got interested in old abbeys. Since Reed had not yet told Ailia about he and his mother’s immortality, I can only assume this is a typo that was missed considering Reed’s mother was not described as looking like she was in her 70’s. There was also a lot of repetitive actions and phrases that could have been edited out. The writing itself was easy to read, but leaned towards telling instead of showing. I wanted to see a character go through something, even if it is a flashback, rather than just being told about it. For example, we were told that Ailia had been having nightmares before we ever experienced her actually having one. Another example was hearing all about how self-sufficient, smart, and independent Ailia was when we were shown the exact opposite. A second issue I had with the writing was some of the terminology used. Any time she referred to Reed, Callum, or the fae soldiers as “the male” or “the males,” I cringed so hard I almost had to put the book down and walk away…and it was, unfortunately, common. The dialogue between characters also left much to be desired. It was also somewhat repetitive. Moving on to the characters. Reed was absolutely insufferable. I wanted to like him so badly, but he was making it impossible. He was aggressive, highly emotional, and possessive. Callum just felt like Reed in a different font (AKA slightly less toxically possessive). At least I liked Callum marginally better because of the small differences. Ailia is a problem. I’m not sure if Ailia doesn’t know herself or if the author didn’t have a tight grasp on her character. It seems like Ailia would talk about how independent and used to being on her own she was. At first, I believed her since she was a scholar, seemed pretty put together, and could hold her own against Reed’s possessive streak. However, a few pages later she would talk about how dependent she was on her sister or forget really basic things like booking a place to stay. I have also never seen a female character be so powerful and yet so helpless. It felt like Callum and Reed had to physically carry this 28 year-old woman around for half the book. She was constantly injured, unconscious, drunk, in an altered state, asleep, dizzy, seasick, etc… She just felt really incapable as a character and that bothered me since she had so much power and determination otherwise. When the whole trio finally started to work together (after Reed and Callum pushed each other around macho-ly throughout the whole book), the banter was actually entertaining. It was too rare that they were all on good enough terms for that though. Instead we got the same fights, the same dialogue, and the same “alpha male” bullshit going on chapter after chapter. Another really odd thing about this trio is how physical they were with one another. I feel like the author replaced actual emotional character development with over dramatic physicality. I have never seen three characters, who are all currently in platonic relationships with each other, touch each other so much constantly. Everyone was kissing each other’s cheeks, foreheads, and hands or tilting each other’s chins, cupping each other’s faces, playing with hair, cuddling, cradling each other, etc… There wasn’t a single chapter where they weren’t all over each other. I understand that they were all “bound” to each other in different ways (way too much of that, btw), but it just felt hollow after a while. I don’t feel that these characters actually got to know each other. There wasn’t an authentic connection beyond the physical between them. Callum, Ailia, and Reed’s entire relationship was a combination of tropes without any depth. 20 tropes in a trench coat as I like to say. The best thing I can say is that the concept was good and the author clearly did her research. The plot kept the book entertaining and I was invested enough to keep going. Hamilton utilized Celtic creatures effectively. I loved the inclusion of the cù-sìth, the glaistig, Finfolk, witches, and even the dragon. I even loved her using Danu, the Celtic goddess of fertility and war, as Ailia and Elideh’s last name. This is Hamilton’s debut novel and I think, creatively, she has real potential to write something great or even finish this series off strong. A good editor can go a long way. I really hope she gets one that can help turn this series from something that is entertaining to something that shines as bright as Ailia’s powers. 2.5/5 stars
Favorite quote:
“Isn't that what love is? To be wanted? To be kept from harm? To be taken care of?
No, it's not, love is empowerment. Selfless desire. Partnership. But most of all, Ailia, love is freedom.”
Plot and magical world pull you in quickly. Love a good love triangle (reminiscent of Bella + Jacob + Edward). Cliffhanger leaves you wanting book 2 asap!
I want to thank Haley for trusting me to be an ARC reader for her debut novel, and give my honest opinion. This magical book is set in Scotland, where we first meet Elideh. She is convinced that the mythical faerie realm, Elflaine, is real. She is also determined to find it. When her younger sister, Ailia, is contacted to say that Elideh hasn’t been back to the Inn, Ailia travels straight there. Reed, a witch she has history with, and his mother are incredibly concerned. They run the Inn and have know the sisters for many years. Ailia isn’t so sure that her sister didn’t just go in search of her dream of finding some magic portal. Then she finds the note. What has Elideh done?
Reed refuses to let Ailia go on this journey alone, so they set out to find her sister. There are a few old fables that are places to start looking. Unfortunately, that does mean going out in the woods. With the bugs. She is not a fan. However, it does appear that Ailia has newly developed magic, and this is a perfect chance to practice and see what element she is gifted with. Are they being watched though? Indeed they are. An incredibly intriguing Fae warrior named Callum appears from the edge of the woods. He has come to the human realm for a mission of his own to find artifacts to take back to Elflaine.
They team up to find the artifacts, work on Ailia’s magic, then once it is all said and done, the plan is to head back to Elflaine to find Elideh. Of course things go smoothly, right? Absolutely not. It’s a wild ride filled with meeting creatures straight from Scottish faerie folklore, nightmares, and magic.
It was an absolute joy to see Ailia be such a strong FMC that had no problems speaking her mind, setting a boundary, or rising to a challenge. This is a cozy read that will make you smile and worry, then repeat. We will do a lot for those we care about, and this book definitely shows the different ways that can look. Now, I need book two immediately!! Five magical stars! You can find this book on Haley’s shop by following her on IG at @haley.h.writes.
Stop whatever you’re doing right now & read. this. book. “The Elflaine Chronicles: Ballad of Dawn” is truly magnificent. I haven’t been this excited about a series since Piper CJ’s “The Night and its Moon” flung me firmly back into the wonderful world of all things bookish. I also haven’t had a book hangover this bad since then, but alas, I must persist. I may have DM’d the author to air my grievances for having the audacity to end the book, but I couldn’t stay mad at her b/c the story, the characters, & the writing was just that breathtaking. I often say I was pulled in immediately to the story, but I really do mean it. The way Haley Hamilton built up the tension & intrigue from the very first page while simultaneously world-building was masterful. Hamilton has a gift for intertwining necessary background information & inner dialog into key moments that make sense within the story. I learned a great deal about each character’s backstories, both realms, the folklore, & even the magical creatures, & not once did it feel info-dumpy. The pacing of the book was immaculate & I was completely entranced from beginning to end. The book is multi-POV & the character development of all 3 MCs was beautifully portrayed. I was especially moved by how the FMC’s eyes were opened to what love truly looks like & how it differs from possession. That is a heart-wrenching lesson to learn & one that I think is especially important to highlight in a market dominated by domineering, highly possessive MMC’s. There is no spice, but there are lots of tender moments, a love triangle, & lots of delicious tension. It sure feels like a slow burn that I am desperately hoping pays off in book 2! Needless to say, I am hooked & I am anxiously awaiting book 2, “The Elflaine Chronicles: Song of Starlight!”
3.75 rounded up. I received an eARC and all opinions are honest and my own. The last third of the book was amazing- I couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait for the next book. This book has it all- animal companions, strong FMC, broody MMC, fae, witches, magic, and dragons.
The story builds slowly- We join Ailia in her epic quest to find her sister, Elideh, who has probably found the mythical land of Elflaine in Scotland. She joined by Reed, a witch from her past. It was… very slow until Callum shows up. Callum really makes the whole book, in my opinion.
The writing improved throughout the book, but I can tell this is a debut novel with the quality of writing. The first half of the book is written very simply, which is fine, but a little frustrating as I’m used to epic fantasies having a certain amount of flourish. The first half of the book was very repetitive. I’m not a writer myself and commend ANYONE who writes a book because I could never. It’s a huge feat. That being said, the line writing for the first half was very simple. I was beggining to get frustrated with the amount of sentences that used “and.” Breaking the sentences up would have made the flow so much better. As I said, the writing significantly improved throughout the story.
Now the story! I enjoyed the modern day setting with a very believable jump into fantasy. I feel like this first book was mostly character and world building. Don’t get me wrong, the world building and character building was great! Reed was possessive but *just* tolerable enough to like. Ailia is, well, a wonderful heroine. Callum… I just love Callum. I can’t say much without spoilers. The real nitty gritty of a unique plot with twists and turns only really occurred in the last 100 pages.
I would definitely suggest this book to anyone wanting to dip their toes into epic fantasy.
I have called quite a few stories perfect, but this book shows how obsessively perfectionist would write a book.
Haley has not taken a single leap in this book. She has even gone as far as giving us each and every meal that the MCs eat throughout! I was deeply impressed with the level of details that were put into writing this book.
This is a fantastic slow burn! Set in the Scottish setting with all the mythologies around there. Has some beautiful Ballads in it, unique magic system which is explained so well!
How in the world could this be a debut novel?! The writing is so mature, the world building - on point. The characters and creatures strong! Has a rich Lore, everything connects so beautifully - damn! I've become a huge fan of this writing. I can't wait to explore more of the Elflaine world.
Actual rating 4.5/5 but rounded down due to GoodReads
Loved everything about this book! The story is set in modern day Scotland, rooted in Scottish Folklore. It starts out with the introduction to two sisters - Ailia and Elideh - whom are both scholars and researchers of folklore and myths (oh and they are witches). Elideh discovers a way to Elflaine (the fairie kingdom), in search of their heritage, and mysteriously goes missing. Ailia is then thrusted into a riveting adventure in hopes to rescue Elideh. There is witches, fae, magic, dragons, big fluffy demon dogs, and more! I'm anxiously awaiting book two, because I really need to know what happens!
