She got her first horse at the tender age of six and grew up riding bareback with wild abandon throughout her small Minnesota town year-round. It was like giving a child car keys!
She showed horses for many years, and later, she and her husband raised quarter horses and thoroughbreds until their kids came along.
She's living her childhood dream, living on an acreage in the country with her husband, three horses (all beloved elderly pasture ornaments, now), a golden retriever, a Mountain Cur rescue, and six fluffy barn cats. It's a much smaller menagerie than when their three kids were still at home!
Ranches, animals, and small-town life frequently find their way into her books.
The title of this book was changed to Dangerous Intent, which is why I had such a hard time finding it on here to review. I think the original title suits it more than this one. Marketed as a romantic suspense, I’d say that’s quite a reach. It’s more women’s fiction. There is very little suspense. I was disappointed by it. This is a new to me author and the description and cover had me expecting great things but it really fell short. To the point where I will probably not be reading more from this author. The ending is ambiguous and we don’t find out what happens with the boy. It almost feels like the author just got tired of her own story and gave up.
A nurse, Abby, a wolf expert, Ethan and his 11-year old son are drawn into a mystery
Abby, who is working as a hospital admin for 3 months, volunteers to take care of Ethan’s son, Kiefer, while Ethan has surgery to fix his arm, injured in an auger accident. Abby can’t find a summer place to live in this resort town. She finally rents a place with a surly landlord, who throws her out after she babysits 3 kids. When Abby takes Kiefer home, she finds a small farm with all of the animals loose. Kiefer is visiting his dad for the summer and isn’t much help in taking care of goats, a horse, cattle, and Rufus, a dog who had just delivered a litter of puppies.
Abby has found a badly abused dog, Bella, at the animal shelter and adopted her. Ethan offers for her to stay at the farm in exchange for her providing nursing care for him and staying home with Kiefer when he took customers fly fishing and studied his wolves.
Abby has had a handful of instances when someone removed assessments from her patient files and fixed “errors” in her notes, making it look like she is incompetent. Abby can’t imagine who would mean her harm.
Ethan has some serious enemies in the county who resent his research on the wolves. Some of the farmers have tried to make claims on animals they never had.
Someone is creating havoc on his farm by sawing through locks on his pens and stealing Bella, who comes back with serious injuries that suggest she was dragged behind a car!
Abby and Ethan are developing romantic feelings for each other. Abby is temporary. She’ll be returning to teaching at the end of the summer. Kiefer will return to his mother at the end of the summer. So a relationship is out of the question.
Things escalate. Ethan accompanies Abby to a huge fundraiser dance for the hospital. When Abby takes the cash and checks to the hospital to put in a safe, she is assaulted, the cash box robbed, and finds herself the main suspect.
Things culminate into an armed confrontation in the woods when 2 men plan to shoot all of the wolves. Ethan catches them and is shot. They intend to shoot Abby and Kiefer and leave no witnesses. Bella becomes quite the protector and launches herself at the armed men. The perpetrators are caught along with the person sabotaging Abby.
Predictable, satisfying ending when Ethan and Abby accepting their feelings for each other.
The writing is entertaining. Humor over all of the farm animals. Refreshing that Abby and Ethan don’t hate each other throughout the book. I like the break from the usual pattern of romantic suspense.
One More Wish by Roxanne Rustand The Northern Pines Series Book Two Abby Cahill went to college with Erin Lang Reynolds. Erin is the Administrator at Blackberry Hill Memorial and needed a summer replacement for Grace, who recently married and has retired. Abby worked as a nurse for three years and has been teaching and writing since then. After a broken engagement and a new job waiting for her in California this fall, she takes it. Arriving, Abby finds her short-term apartment has burned down, and being a tourist town in the summer, everything is full. She finds a place, but the cantankerous man ends up evicting her.
Ethan Rockwell is being told he needs to go to the Green Bay hospital because his arm is cut up so bad he needs more specialized care to heal right. He only has his son, Keifer, for the summer. When he sees no way out of going, Abby, a stranger to him, offers to take Keifer.
Abby finds herself stuck in the mud, facing a wolf, loose animals, and she needs to get to the animal shelter to save a dog before the next day. Not to mention a ten-year-old she just met. There are also some suspicious things happening. Top it off with odd things happening to her at work, and her summer is off to a great start. I loved this series and suggest reading them in order if you want the complete picture. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
After a broken engagement, Abby temporarily takes a job at a hospital. Upon her arrival, she discovers that her short-term apartment burned down and she gets evicted by a cantankerous landlord. Abby meets Ethan and his son Keifer, who is visiting Ethan for the summer, at the hospital because Ethan injured his arm in an augar accident. When her living arrangements fall through twice after her arrival, she agrees to take care of Kiefer who is visiting Ethan for the summer in exchange for room and board at Ethan's place. Mysterious incidents happen at Ethan's place because Ethan studies wolves. Mysterious incidents also happen at the hospital, making Abby to seem to be inept at her job, but who would do that? This story kept me turning the pages as I was trying to solve the mystery and see how Ethan and Abby's relationship would progress.
A man determined to prove the wolves deserve a place to thrive but some greedy men have other ideas. A young woman comes to help out a friend for a few months as director of nursing at a small underfunded and understaffed hospital. Her reserved apartment was part of a fire and it's tourist season. Rentals are full. Her 1st find was a tiny place with a cranky old man, didn't last, then she saw an abused neglected dog needing a home before set to be euthanized. Set out to adopt her, but she didn't have a home right now either. Til the guy trying to protect the wolf pack comes into the hospital with severe damage to his arm, with a 10 yr old in tow. He needs surgery in a bigger hospital and she needs a place to stay. And so it begins
The book I read was same as this by same author but title “Dangerous Intent”. It was an okay clean romance with a tad bit of a mystery with some action. It did have some spelling and editorial errors. It was also over descriptive to be boring point, which is why it’s a 3star book. It also had a romance that wasn’t really a romance. But as far as a clean romance, I guess that’s a romance. I enjoyed reading it. Will I reread it? I don’t know.
Erin recruited her friend Abbey to fill a temporary position. Grace has retired and her replacement won't arrive for three months. Ethan is on sabbatical from DNR to write a book about wolves. She has no place to live and he need help with his 10 year old son for the summer. They all have adventures, some good and some bad but it all works out. Love these books.
Read books from Roxanne Rustand and so far not disappointed. All are good, clean stories that have kept my interest. I have started quite a few books and if I can’t get into the first couple chapters, I quit the book and delete it from my library. So far I have never quit any books from this author. I enjoyed the storyline👍😃
Abby arrived to new summer job and things went wrong from the first minute in town.
Abby arrived at her new job to find the apartment she rented burn down and no housing available. Her first patient turned out to be the wolf man. She wound up in charge of his son while he went for surgery. Things are all messed up as she tries to set things right.
This was retitled Dangerous Intent and given a new cover, but is not on Goodreads. I don't know if there are any other differences, but Dangerous Intent was a great read. The ending was not quite what I wanted....a bit up in the air....but it was still a great read
A new author that I will definitely be following closely! How refreshing to find books that have interesting plots mixed with intrigue, humor, kindness and romance without blood and gore mixed with foul language! What a terrific find for me!!!
Lots going on in this book. Abby, a nursing instructor, takes a summer job as DON in a small hospital in Wisconsin. She’s expecting a slow relaxing time while there. Boy, is she wrong.
Interesting and just enough kindness, love and excitement. I have been a dog lover for all my life and in 2017; I became a kitten lover. We rescued 6 baby kitties. They are getting older and oh so very sweet. I know they love me.
Great story! I am really looking forward to the next book.
Ethan's son Kiefer comes to spend the summer with his dad and Abby needs a place to stay with her dog, Belle. Ethan and Abby have feelings for each other but It's coming in the next book.
This book was AMAZING until the end. It felt super rushed and didn’t wrap up well at all. It was almost like they ran out on their limit of word usage and had to shove it into one little chapter. So odd & disappointing after a great read until then!
A different kind of romantic suspense series. Loved the setting and the characters. Revolves around a small town that explodes in the summer with tourists. Memorable and sweet romance
This story was intriguing with equal parts suspense and romance. The setting was great amid the backdrop of the wolf habitat and the issue of endangerment..
Nailed this story too ! Great series and characters . Can't resist a book with dogs in it. More than anything it's clean, suspenseful and just plain good.
