This was a really good book. I have read other books in this series, and I have enjoyed them all. This one I read out of order but it stood alone, so I didn’t feel like I missed anything.
Annie’s mother, Lou Ann was murdered many years ago. After Annie, and Sarah lost their mother, Sarah moved out of town. Years later Sarah called Annie, and asked if she would meet her at the very Inn that their mother was murdered at. Annie wanted to see her sister so she agreed. Annie was running late, and before she got there her sister was murdered in the very room that their mother had been murdered in.
The murderer has made Annie the next target. Texas Ranger Zane who is lead detective on the case is there to protect Annie. Can he protect her, without giving his heart away?
This book was suspense, action, and romance.

Sample from chapter 6
Zane grabbed his colt .45 automatic from the hook by the back door as he rushed outside, heading toward the scuffle he’d spotted through the window of the sheriff’s office. The attacker cut and ran toward the woods. “Halt!” Zane shouted, sparing a glance at the small unmoving form that had crumpled to the ground where the attacker had shoved it. He tasted the sharp tang of fear. Had the Killer claimed another victim? “Texas Ranger,” He shouted. “Halt or I’ll shoot!”

The McKinney family had been torn apart when their father was the prime suspect in Lou Ann, Sarah and Anna Wallace’s mom, murder.

That was sixteen years ago, but now he’s back on that suspect list when Sarah turns up murdered in the same way that her mother was. She wanted to start a new life with her sister Anna, but fate wasn’t going to allow that.

Sarah’s death played unlikely matchmaker to her sister and the son of the Texas Ranger who was accused of their mother’s death. Anna doesn’t want to be back in Justice, but now she cannot leave with her being suspect one in the death of her sister before she can be cleared. She doesn’t have to wait long to be cleared, after she is attacked outside the Inn she’s staying at.

Zane McKinney, the oldest of three sons of Jim and Stella McKinney doesn't want to be in Justice, Texas, but he has no choice. He’s the only one that knows the area without having to take days for another Ranger to know the towns past. That past is the reason he became a Ranger, he had to do what his dad failed to do. He had to live by the Ranger’s code not disgrace it.

He’s only ever had women for a time, never anything serious; he’s never let them into his heart. Now, in the middle of the murder he’s trying to solve he is falling for the woman he’s supposed to be protecting. Anna isn’t making it easy for him on that protecting though she’s hardheaded and the murderer is trying to make her their next victim.

Zane has to do a better job at protecting her, but he knows that he can’t, not here in Justice. He has to get her out town away from the place she had to put to rest both her mother and sister. What’s a guy to do but try and stay by his code of honor, even if protecting her means making both of them miserable and happy.

Book one of three in The Silver Star of Texas series. Three Brothers, One Texas town... Too many secrets.

This would have gotten 3 stars if not for the inconsistencies. For instance at location 2067 in the Kindle edition it says
"His generic message centered around the value of human life, the sorrow surrounding the death of so young a woman and her unborn child and the solace found in faith."
This is at Sarah's funeral.

Then at location 2180 "Jon got the results of Sarah's autopsy. Annie--She was pregnant. Only a few weeks."

There were a few others but this one stuck with me the most. I should have bookmarked all of them. I can take spelling and some grammatical errors, but when there are several inconsistencies within the book, that upsets me. Surely and editor should have caught these?

The other thing I didnt like about this book was the MC Zane. I didnt really care for him at all.

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU ENJOY MURDER MYSTERIES! You will not find out who the murder is! Until the last chapter I had planned to give this book a 4 star rating. Unfortunately the plot work, characterisations and, dammit, a bloody interesting story (!!) are left short shifted in the final chapter. It makes a great romantic tale, I'm sure, but the heroine doesn't even find out who attacks her. I read the Intrique category because the combine two genres I've loved reading since I was ten. I love a good crime story, with twisting plots and deadly suspence and I love a sexy romance with non-mary sue characters. This book delivered both until the final chapter. I just want to yell at the protagonists so they stop the mushy emotional stuff and tell me who the killer was!

How can you not clearly disclose the murderer??!! How did the reverend give a generic service yet know & announce the pregnancy of the victim and no one at the funeral even hear that!!! Very disappointed & not interested in reading any of the rest of this series based on this one.
