Once there was a little boy who loved to visit his grandparents. But he couldn’t fall asleep in the squeaky, creaky bed at their house. Grandfather thought a little cat would help. Or a little dog. Maybe a little pig? Soon the bed was very full, but it was still squeaky and creaky. Would the little boy–and all his new friends–ever be able to fall asleep? Fun animal sounds, repetition, and lots of squeaking and creaking make this the kind of story young children will love to join in reading.
I don't understand the parrot's solution. Or why the boy is so fussy and spoiled. Still, it's funny in its own way,and illustrations of the grandparents as hippies is great.
Do note that it seems as if there are two sides to Niki Daly: the one who does generic cartoony 'western' books and the one who does lovely stories set in southern Africa.
A little boy doesn't like his squeaky, creaky bed so his grandparents decide he just needs a cat. When that doesn't help they get him a dog, a pig, and a parrot. The repetition makes for a good read aloud. Kids can read along with those parts. I also liked the illustrations. I think they were perfect for the mood of this book. This was another one of my discards during The Great Read Aloud Search. It's good, but nothing too special.
Once there was a little boy who loved to stay with his grandparents. But he never could fall asleep in their squeaky, creaky old bed. So Grandpa gives him a cat for company. Then a dog. Then a pig. Then more and more, until the bed is overflowing and no one’s getting any rest. I am laughing that Niki Daly drew Grandpa and Grandma as aging hippies. This is a fun story to read out loud, with lots of sound effects to keep it interesting.
