I was pretty sure I wasn't going to like Mr Lauda, as he's often described as an arrogant bastard--something he's the first to admit--but he's also funny and surprisingly sensitive.

His career was astounding, from the horrible shunt at Nurburgring to the teams he worked with to the car technologies he mastered. He goes into decent detail about working with Enzo Ferrari, Gordon Murray, and Ron Dennis. He also breaks down the wing era cars, the turbo cars, and the fantastic Brabham Fan Car, so I learned alot there, which was very cool. And he tells about his ballsy negotiations with the various teams for his record-setting salaries.

I have to admit that I was mostly interested in his recollection of the Nurburgring shunt. Not surprisingly, he remembers very little. More shocking is when, early in the book, he talks about his involvement in the race where Roger Williamson crashed and burned to death. He discusses how David Purley, Williamson's best friend, tried to right his car and pull him out. He also explains that the other drivers thought all was ok because they saw a shunted car but also a driver nearby. So, like an idiot, I went to YouTube and watched the video of the disaster. It's horrific. If you haven't seen it, DON'T!! It's hideous and haunting.

The book also features a ton of terrific photos of his various cars and the other drivers of his era (esp. a nice one of James Hunt in a Speedo with his model/first wife), and a chapter of insights into his family life.

Now I'm looking for a book on Gordon Murray. Any recommendations?

I have recently read Nikki Lauda, Meine Story, and to say the least this book has surpassed my expectations in various ways. This book details the life of Nikki Lauda, one of the greatest race car drivers in the history of the sport of Formula 1. Early in his career, he was involved in a fiery crash that nearly ended his life, however, he would persist through this and fight on as he would still continue on to become world champion in Formula 1 which is considered by many to be the pinnacle of motorsport. I chose to read this book because I have always carried an interest in cars and had now begun to follow formula 1 as an extension of that. I had also seen the movie, Rush, which describes the life of the racing legend, although I had already seen this movie, I wanted to learn more about this. My favorite part of this text was when the book describes how he recovered from the crash and the physical and also most importantly mental toughness that allowed him to recover and continue to work towards him becoming the champion that he would become today. I would recommend this book to young friends of Formula 1 as these inspirational stories can inspire you to work hard and become a champion in your own right, however, these lessons could be applied to anyone, such as older people, or anyone as these will help you in various facets of life.

I really love the way Niki Lauda writes his books. It's very amusing, highly addictive style where terms and details about engines and cars make you completely interested in the text you read.
The book is indeed "Meine Story" ... a ride throught Lauda's life, opinions and persepective.
The way he went through events of 1976 is amazing and mindblowing.
I am not sure if I have ever read a story this much motivating as was this one.

Dowiadujemy się o jego zmaganiach finansowych, refleksjach po przegraniu mistrzostwa świata zaledwie o punkt z Jamesem Huntem, czy walce z FIA o zmianę obowiązujących przepisów. To szczere spojrzenie na świat Formuły 1, który zaciekawi zarówno pasjonatów tego sportu, jak i osoby, które pragną dowiedzieć się, jak ten sport wyglądał kilkadziesiąt lat temu.

„Do piekła i z powrotem” to pozycja obowiązkowa dla fanów Formuły 1, ale także dla tych, którzy interesują się historią wyjątkowych osobowości ze świata sportu. Ta książka to nie tylko opowieść o legendarnym kierowcy, to historia determinacji, odwagi i nieustępliwej walki o swoje marzenia. Den ersten Berühungspunkt mit Nikis Gesichte hatte ich als ich den Film "Rush“ mit dem genialen Daniel Brühl in der Rolle des Niki Lauda sah. Zuvor hatte mir der Name Niki Lauda - schande über mich - herzlich wenig gesagt und ich war auch kein begeisterter Formel1-Fan. Doch dieser Film über einen der bekanntesten Formel1-Rennfahrer der Welt löste bei mir eine Menge sehr gemischter und starker Emotionen aus. Anfangs war ich fassungslos und konnte nur mit Kopfschütteln auf Nikis Entscheidung reagieren, nach so einem schweren Unfall wieder mit dem Rennfahren anzufangen. Wie wahnsinnig und dumm musste man sein um sich läppische 33 Tage nach einer Nahtoderfahrung wieder hinters Steuer zu setzen? Doch nach einigen Tagen des Reflektierens und nachdem ich zahlreiche Interviews und Fernsehauftritte (vor und nach seinem Unfall 1967) mit ihm gesehen hatte wichen diese Gedanken einer tiefen Bewunderung für seine scheinbar unerschütterliche Leidenschaft zum Rennsport. Natürlich hatte er Angst sich wieder ins Auto zu setzen, aber er wollte und würde diese Angst nicht gewinnen lassen. Entgegen aller guten Instinkte entschied er sich weiter zu fahren und wurde nach 1967 noch zweimal Weltmeister. So wurde aus mir - quasi über Nacht - ein wahrhaftiger Lauda-Fan. Ich las 2 Biographien, eine über und eine von ihm. Als ich eine davon im Buchladen kaufte lächelte mich die Verkäuferin über den Tresen hinweg an und fragte, ob das Buch ein Geschenk für meinen Vater sei. „Nein, das ist für mich“ gab ich stolz und mit einem breiten Grinsen zurück. Für mich bleibt Niki Lauda ein Vorbild und der lebende Beweis dafür, dass wir alle an unseren kühnsten Träumen festhalten und sie vor allem entgegen aller Widrigkeiten auch leben sollten.
