In "Aikido Basics, " the beginning student will find invaluable advice and information for the study of this popular form of martial arts. Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, Dang Phong, shares his secrets to building a successful training program, testing for belt promotion, and understanding and developing Ki, the energy used in aikido. The author incorporates a discussion of aikido's origin, its history and philosophical underpinnings, and an explanation of the different branches of aikido.
Explanation of techniques are detailed but would be confusing for a complete beginner, if you are a 6th kyu I would read most of the advice, train and review the techniques as you go along up the ranks in order to supplement your training and help visualise All the other advice is great though, and as a senior I see a lot of philosophical advice that I can use to help my juniors.
This was my first Aikido book I bought as soon as I signed up for my first class. Although learning by doing is the only way to learn Aikido, this did help paint a picture as to what to expect. Also, doing it then going back and reading about help with refreshing my memory as well as making connections when practicing taisobaki (sp?) at home.
