Much closer to 4-1/2 stars, but not quite enough to tip it to five. And OK, now that I'm writing this review, I'm tipping it to five. I think this will be a story I remember for a while.
This was a great surprise. For one thing, I was thinking "Spin" would be something about the record industry. I've read several rock star stories lately, and Spin would be a good name for a story, right? (I tend to download lots of books, then just choose one on my Kindle, so I didn't re-read the blurb before starting.) This had nothing to do with music. Well, unless you consider Finn's guitar playing, but that wasn't a huge part of the story. Just one more endearing thing about Finn. For another, it was a freebie, and I think we all know freebies can be hit or miss. This was a definite hit for me.
I loved that Finn saw right through Jane. I loved that Jane had tried so hard to make something of herself after her experiences of growing up. And we don't actually realize until much later in the book that Jane's upbringing was not all sunshine and roses, despite the fact that Jane was the mayor's daughter and Finn was supposedly the one from the wrong side of the tracks.
There were always these mini-sparks between them, on the few occasions Jane allowed herself to feel it. But because of their huge (to her) social chasm, she would never have acted on them. Well, not much at least. It was quite serendipitous that they found each other again when they did. And that Finn was in the right place at the right time to help Jane through what ended up being a very tough episode of soul searching.
Didn't hurt that they had incredible chemistry. And many sexy and sweet times. They were a great match.
This is the first book (novella) that i've read by this author. But hopefully, it won't be my last.
Honestly, in the last couple of days i haven't had any concentration to read. I pick a book, read a few lines, and not five minutes later i'm up....and doing other stuff, leaving the stories abandoned. O_o This was the book, that dragged me out of the reading ~Desert~ that i had fallen into!
Thank you, book! :)
A short novella, this was supposed to be a sexy fast read.... Which it was....alongside many other things. It was falso funny, entertaining, insightful...and yes, hot.
This, is how it starts:
THREE TIMES. In twenty-nine years of living, I’d only let myself get spun up three times. I almost always regretted it. Generally, it took a lot to rattle me. Bright smile, white-knuckled control: I was like an iron ball of yarn. That was my way. It was a pretty good way. Simple too. Just hang on tight, smile like a crazy person, and never let go. It got me places, and I probably shouldn’t have got more than ten miles past my county’s swampy line. I stayed away from things like alcohol or emotions; neither ever went well for me.
With that last sentence, i was hooked. The writing has that magical realism undertone, even if it never fully resorts to that genre.
The thing is, this story is well written, and unlike the majority of new adult, or erotic books, the main characters aren't idiots!
Well, there's a tiny moment of tstl on Jane's part....
Eleven years is a lonnnnnnng time. In eleven years people may have "decided" to become "active" psychopaths...or cannibals. So following a guy who you haven't seen in eleven years... o_O
But besides that, it was all good! (Of course, i would have liked if they had told us, in more detail what it was growing up the way they did. What we are told is very little.)
The characters had such likable voices, that i could just keep on reading this for a little longer!
In fact, if it wasn't for one tiny moment in which a ginger root is used for something besides cooking....i wouldn't even consider this erotica! Just your average contemporary book with some hot scenes...
“Fine.” I gave the pile of food a swift glance. “Ginger.” His grin grew. “Good choice.” My face fell. “You know something to do with ginger?” He nodded.
The characters maintain a delightful banter throughout the whole book. Their chemistry is in a word, perfect.
I roped my fingers through his short hair and tugged. “Finn.” “What?” His voice came up, muffled, from below. I almost laughed. “What are you doing down there?” “What do you think I’m doing?”
Finn... Well, he's pretty much a perfect guy all wrapped up in a bow.
I KEPT OUR fingers entwined as I led her inside, partly because I didn’t want her to fall over and partly because I was afraid she might bolt.
He's considerate, attentive...
“You know you could do anything, Jane, right?”
He's there for when Jane needs him. But it's her call, he doesn't go around acting like a macho idiot!
Told in a dual point of view, the author achieved a perfect balance for this type of story. I loved it.
“You travel with knives?” “I don’t travel with them. I bought it this afternoon. I didn’t know what you had on hand.” “A knife? You didn’t think I had a knife here at the house?” (..) “It’s ceramic.”(..) She started whacking away at a stalk of celery. “It’s a weakness. I see kitchen equipment, I have to get it.” “Okay.” I watched her. Her head was bent. Her face was tense. “We’ve all got weaknesses,” I said slowly. “If yours is knives, we can deal.” I glanced back at the knife. “I think.” She smiled a little and lifted her head. “I actually have a lot more knives than I need.” “You probably shouldn’t be telling me this.”
Finn's has a sense of humour and he doesn't take himself too seriously. Just what a workaholic needs, lol Of course, like Jane he also has his insecurities about where he comes from.
I looked down and saw her staring blankly at my shoulder. I could almost hear the whirr of gears in her head. I rocked my hips some more, she rocked back absently. “Want some popcorn?” I asked. Her eyes snapped to mine. “Sorry?” “Popcorn. For the show.”
Also i liked how the author didn't try to resolve every single problem in the last pages. The problem that Jane faces in her work, for instance. Most of us know how sexual harassment charges are dealt. We don't need to be a target to know it.
In another book, another author would probably give this problem a white knight solution (her bf/fiancée husband who is this big shot, would probably financially terminate the weasel and all would be good. Or he would beat the crap out of the bastard and get arrested. You see where i am going?)
This doesn't happen here.
Instead, a very difficult situation is used to give Jane's life a new direction...if she chooses to. Of course i wouldn't mind, if in a following book, the guy would fall down a cliff... But yes, the path chosen by the author felt more realistic.
In the end, a story i loved to read. A book i definitely recommend. And characters, that i hope seeing again.
Dragged out a bit in some areas, but if you love books about people who try to fight against their attraction but ultimately succumb to the heat ;) this is the one for you!! Great read for a Sunday night!
Favorite Quote: “Janey, you’ve been looking for trouble since the day you were born.“
Jane MacInnee has always has always had a crush on bad boy Finn Dante since childhood but she was the princess of the swamp they called home and he was from the other side of the tracks. Saddled with impossible family expectations. Jane escapes the rigid confines and expectations of her hometown and becomes an event planner to the rich. She has her life mapped out to the most minute detail. Nothing and no one is going to stand in her way.
Finn Dante, the bad boy who made good, is the only man who can upset Jane’s orderly controlled world. When he sweeps back into her life, Jane feels everything she has worked for is slipping away as he slowly works his way into her bed and life. Finn knows if he can just get her to let go and trust him to catch her as she falls, they can have a life filled with love, laughter, and fire fueled passion.
But Jane is scared and apprehensive about letting go. Finn finds himself having to spin her, confuse her, and unwind her until he can capture the heart of her and prove to her that losing control is more fun than she ever imagined.
Spin is the first book in a new erotic romance series by Bella Love. I will admit I would have preferred knowing that it was not a stand alone upfront but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story. A sweet, humorous, erotic romance about a couple who, as adults, are finally able to explore the attraction that has simmered between them for years. That is, if they can overcome their fear of the unknown.
Jane, Janey Mac to Finn, might have been the princess of Dodge Run, but she didn’t have a fairytale life. A mentally ill mother and class distinctive father led Jane to become a what Finn calls “an annoyingly cheerful control freak.” She lived her life struggling to live up to her family’s expectations and the result has locked her down emotionally. Stay happy and in control is what keeps Jane from going insane. Though Jane annoyed me at times with her almost bipolar emotional state, watching her come into her own was gratifying. She’s scared of life but is willing to try and let go if Finn is her reward.
Finn is a delicious bad boy. Labelled white trash from childhood, Finn has managed to escape his past and go his own way, caring nothing of what people think of him. A curious but appealing mixture of alpha and beta, Finn isn’t one to overly dominate and control but rather help lead you (Janey) in the right direction. He has Janey’s number from the get go and rather than run from her craziness, he chooses to embrace it. I found it telling that Finn, the supposed bad one, got no less than six scholarships to various colleges while Janey, the good one, didn’t have the grades to get one single offer. It just goes to show you that you can’t judge a book by its cover. I like how he grounds Janey, offering her support for her choices but also telling her the truth. She’s scared and uses control to keep people from getting too close and he calls her on it.
“I’m tired of being your dare, Janey.”
The easy banter that Janey and Finn have together is delightful. Even though the book presents in alternating POVs, you’re never lost or ejected from a scenes. Sexy and witty, they made me chuckle repeatedly throughout the book. They had a great chemistry together and it showed.
“I feel like I could do anything,’ I whispered, my wrist slung around his neck. “Go for it.” “Last time you said that, you meant for me to stick my hands down your pants.” “That’s was I mean now.”
Their romance develops slowly even though the sex is blazingly hot and gallops right out the gate. Lots of show and tell makes for some steamy scenes. Though erotic in it’s nature, it’s vanilla with a touch of wild flavoring. Use of ginger root is about as freaky as it gets. Though there is a phone scene…and let’s just say the old saying, “reach out and touch someone” gets a whole new meaning. *wink*
A few subplots work their way through the book, twisting and turning, adding tension and the means for Janey and Finn to work through their fears. I did feel that some of the story was rushed and a few scenes didn’t quite match up the way they were meant to, coming across as struggling and unfinished. The ending, while inconclusive to the romance, doesn’t leave us dangling from a cliff. Finn and Janey are happy for now. Their story continues in Dare, release date to be announced.
I am hooked! This series starts out with Finn and Jane (Janey Mac to Finn) and the attraction they have had since their youth. He works a high end pawn business and she's an event planner. They both carry deep rooted fears that they begin to unravel in this book. I'm loving the "voodoo" between these two as Bella calls it. Their chance meetings and the fact these two are meant for each other.
Love the secondary characters, especially Max, Finn's dog. I laughed, and even teared up at one point. The banter between these two kept me smiling and the chemistry.....WOW! Just...wow! Their story continues in the next book of the series and I can't wait for it to come out. That being said, it still ends in a way that doesn't leave me totally hanging on a limb. I felt good as I turned the Kindle off. Like I had just settled in with some comfy new friends.
4 1/2 stars. Bella Love is an auto buy for me :)
I received this from the author for an honest review.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one, because this is the first book from Bella Love. But the blurb sounded pretty promissing and I really loved the cover! I admit I am definitely one of those visual types that can be immediately swayed one way or another just by a cover! So I went into this story with absolutely no idea what to expect. Unfortunately for me, I just had a tough time getting into this one. There were many times that I almost put this down and didn't finish, but I have a need to see things through and ended up finishing. Only to find out that the story continues in another book.
Spin is the story of Jane and Finn. They are opposites when it comes to social standing and upbringing. Jane escaped small town life and started her own event planning business. After struggling to get her business to the next level she lands some very important clients and goes to get everything ready for their event. She never expected that she would run into Finn after 11 years and a few kisses when they were young. Jane fights the connection between them and is always running from things she is scared of, but this time Finn is not allowing her to run from the attraction between them.
Most of this book felt completely rushed to me and it was hard to follow at times. I felt like I was constantly trying to figure out what was going on and often times felt lost. The story just seemed to jump around. I also felt like even though the scenes were hot, that their connection to each other was only physical. I just wasn't feeling the emotions beween them. Most of this book seemed to be one sex scene after another without much in between. I found Jane to be annoying a lot of the time and also extremely immature for the age of her character. It just seemed to me that there were too many inconsistencies as far as personality went. One minute she is strong and independent and willing to do anything to make her career happen and the next she is timid and shy and running scared. I also couldn't get past the fact that Finn couldn't tell Jane what he did for a living because he was scared that she would run away if she knew. He pushed her so hard not to run and be scared and to face everything, and yet he wouldn't do as he was telling her to do.
Overall, I had just been expecting more and unfortunately this one just didn't live up to those expectations for me. It wasn't memorable, and even though there will be more to their story in the next book by Bella Love, I really am not interested in what happens to them.
First taste of contemporary romance from this author - Actually I am quite familiar with her alias's work (historical and yummy Irishmen).
--- 12% Most small town communities you always have the bad crowd and the preppy high-class crowd. Spin starts us off in such a town called Dodge Run.
In Dodge run the Dante males are known to be the ruination of womenkind. Even seen talking to them can ruin a girl's reputation. And Finn Dante is no exception to the rule even at the young age of fourteen.
Jane MacInnees is Finn's complete opposite in the social scene. Daughter of the town's powerful people, a cheerleader. She was raised to stay away from the Dante men with warnings of dire circumstances. She's a little too reserved, too cautious.
Technically not a reunion story but one where the hero and heroine grew up in the same, town, knew each other by rumors
---57% in - Wowza! That last sex scene... I had to stop reading just to cool down there. Quite inventive, never read a scene like that but in no way would I wanna try that out. I'd be way too embarrassed..
The rest of the story sped by in a warm-and-light-hearted haze. To be honest Janey was not my ideal heroine. However, she is the perfect counterbalance for Finn's character, the perfect yin to his yang to make things work.
Much of her views and quirks were ingrained by Dodge and her family. To the point where she was afraid to step out beyond the sphere she was mandated. Though her character was not one that I liked I identified with her, the frightened of trying aspect.
Me identifying with her kept me from totally disliking her.
And Finn - you gotta adore and love a man who is willing to tell his lady it straight. He backing his lady, protecting her from the slimeball rich boss or simply instilling confidence, telling her she could do anything she wanted.
In First- Person but I liked how the author broke the scenes into different POV. We did not just get "one" side. One scene she would start in Janey's POV. The next scene Finn's. In First Person we are often cheated on the other's thoughts and feelings just knowing the one character's innermost thoughts and feelings. I thought she handled the need to know both this way.
Ending was not necessarily a cliff hanger but a prelude that Janey and Finn's adventures are not over but this was just a taste for things to come.. And well I am hoping that we meet some more Dante men and Dante's friends..
I really enjoyed this book as much for what it wasn't as for what it was. Finn is an alpha bad boy hero of the very best sort. Finn will gladly fight to defend that what he holds dear. But, he is just as vigorous in support. Finn stands behind Jane, beside Jane, and in front of Jane in the face of all foes including herself.
Finn is a bad boy in the most delicious sense of the word. Rather than wondering if you might should cross to the other side of the street, you hope that he will ask you to join him in whatever mischief he might be finding. His main sin is an unquenched thirst for fun; a reckless, goodnatured, abandon tempered with good intent. Finn is that boy you always wished you had kissed.
Jane is every girl who ever tried to live up to expectations. She is strong and determined and scared out of her mind. Seeing her grow into herself was satisfying to a far greater extent than you would expect from a fairly short novel. Bella Love doesn't try to take on an overly complicated plot and works well within the constraints of format and genre. It's a story about a girl who is lost and boy who finds her and the wonderful people they can become. It reminded me of Jennifer Cruise's Bet Me (a favorite of mine)
The sex is explicit but notable in the current milieu for a distinct lack of anything that you really could never see yourself doing. At no point did I find myself considering drawing a diagram to figure out how in the world body parts were lining up. Nothing was used that would need to be delivered in a discrete brown paper covered package. The familiar was pleasantly spiced, accesible and tempting.
I'm not even sure where to start. I'm still shaking my head. Sorry to say, but I have to think the 4 & 5 star reviews for this book must be readers related to the author. ??? Believe me, I realize that's a gigantic accusation, but other than that, I have no explanation for those reviews. This book left me so utterly confused. Seriously, I finished this book with a headache. I do not see how this book was fun, I felt it (or the heroine), (or maybe the author), went in 10 different directions at once. "Jane" was constantly confused, or wound up, or scared, or--or--or--....Sadly, I would have been more interested in getting to know more about the 3 legged dog instead of the heroine. This book to me, was like being given a road map to follow, for a completely different state. Truly this character was a piece of work. And I can say that because I'm a piece of work. Normally, for a human being, I would suggest counseling, but even this fictional character is waaay beyond that. I just don't know what else to say, maybe it's my A.D.D. acting up? Maybe other readers will understand this book? Or maybe if you just want to read about wild 'monkey sex', that leads to absolutely no direction whatsoever, then give it a try. P.S. I'd also wait for this book to be free, if I were you...Good luck. You'll need it.
Free download. This book was totally different to what I expected, it's focused on Janey, highly strung, highly focused, her career is what she lives for as an event planner, but that all goes downhill when she comes face to face with her past, Finn Dante, Finn was the guy she always wanted but was too afraid to have because he was dangerous and a trouble maker. Finn has always wanted Janey but knows all about her fears and knows pushing her will make her run. It's her coping mechanism, but when she stays and they share some amazing sex he realises that he wants her to stay but will Janey or will she continue to be scared. This wasn't the usual I love you, stay with me reads, the characters share an understanding of who they are and why caution in required. I loved Finn, and really wished Janey was a bit more take what you want not be scared of everything and don't try, the story was ok, but I found some of the dialogue was too much. The sex is hot, I was disappointed that no 'I Love You's' were shared but that was in line with the characters personalities. Overall it was an ok read.
First I want to say I enjoyed this book. It's written in first person going back and forth between Janey and Finn's POV. I am not a fan of first person and I thought it was going to be a problem but I'm happy to say I got passed that. I loved both Finn and Janey's characters. Finn was easy going and hot as h**l. Janey was strung so tight that its a wonder she didn't spin when she stood still. She was so afraid of not out running her passed that she out ran from a happy life. Finn was out to make Janey live life and make her his. It was a joy to watch Janey unravel. In a good way. This is a smoking hot book and I highly recommend it. I was given this book by the author for a honest review.
I really liked this novella -- although it didn't feel like a novella.
Story of Jane and Finn who grew up together in the same small town, stifled by their families and their stations in life, but were barely friends with the exception of graduation night when there's barely a hot and steam kiss. Both leave...and end up reconnecting 11 years after high school. She's an event planner and he's a surprise. From there they begin a hot and steamy affair.
This was fun to read. I enjoyed the dialogue and the process of self-discovery that Jane goes through with Finn.
I wanted more... like a longer book or a second book or something, so only 4 stars.
I got a little more than half way thru when I decided to throw in the towel. I really wanted to like this book. It happens to be one of my favorite tropes but there was just something about this book that I just couldn't get into. It felt a bit rushed to me and the characters were a tad annoying. Also, it just seemed like one sex scene after another. Don't get me wrong, I love reading a well written sex scene but if the author is continuously throwing them at me they just begin to lose their effect. I found myself skimming over some of the scenes which is never good.
This book was just not my cup of tea. The heroine was a bit self-destructive, insecure and scared spit-less all of the time. That got old very quickly and had a negative impact on this story. I had a difficult time connecting with her and did not care for her personality and character.
I am sorry to say that I cannot recommend this book but you may want to check it out for yourself. After all, I am just one opinion which may differ from yours.
This book was free at the time I read it. Turned out to be ok. Thank goodness for the background info in the beginning lest you think Janey a little loose. Janey wasn't too whiney in the book. Just the usual reservations. And of course there's Finn. Love him! Not a long story so no long explanations or waiting. I would recommend this book for a sitting on your porch kinda read.
4.5 stars.... Lovely , fun sexy read. First couple of pages were slightly awkward, but then it just got going and was a wonderful little read. Finn Dante was gorgeous and Janey Mac was fun with a few hang ups....But Finn helped her with those. Loved the authors writing style and would definitely read more from her.
This was a free book and I thought it would be a pleasant read. What a surprise.I could not put it down and read it in one sitting staying up into the early hours of the morning to finish it. I really like stories that are told from both POVs and I loved Finn- definitely wouldn't kick him out of bed. I will look out for more books by this author.
Ever wake up from a nightmare at two in the morning and remember the coming day's schedule isn't nice? I did, so I turned on my Kindle. Next on my "to read" list was a book I didn't remember buying: this one. It had me hooked in the first few pages and kept me hooked. "Sexy" works so well with characters like Janey and Finn, with real lives, real issues, and a strong storyline.
This was my first Bella Love book and Spin was a solid read. Love a good second chance romance book where the characters have lots of history...Spin had all of that. The storyline was solid and well thought out. The characters had great chemistry and loved their interaction with each other. Throw in no cliffhanger at the end and you have a pretty great book.
Not for me. Lots of whining. Lots of non stop sex.
Finn was interesting and had troubles that apparently we're never going to get to know about because Janey is too busy whining. I'm guessing war in Afghanistan trumps growing up on the wrong side of the tracks.
I'm also not sure I'll ever be able to look at ginger the same way again. Eww
Fun story about a heroine trying to outrun her white trash past and the hero from her high school days that she can't forget. Small town bad boy romance. It didn't change my life, but it's a quick sexy read.
I loved the story, the plot, the writing, the relationship between the two characters and most of all how they played off each other. Brilliant hot steamy read! But I'd like to say without sex for sex sake. Well written.
I loved this story, and couldn't put it down. I enjoyed seeing how both Janey and Finn felt for each other as kids, and then as adults. A simple, light-hearted romance, with some serious sexy romance between them both! :-)
This is a really nice easy read. I did find the serious stage of the book silly but I guess then there really wouldn't be anything to give the relationship between Finn and Jane some complications and resolutions.
