The year is 405 AD and the Western Roman Empire is crumbling. But in Britannia a Roman soldier has an idea. His invention is the stirrup. And the Europe will not be the same. This is the story of Cato and his cavalry.
In the forward Mr. Jones relates that at age 15 he was influenced by Rosemary Sutcliffe's novel THE LANTERN BEARERS set in Britain at the time Rome was abandoning the island. After reading this I was expecting a good story as Sutcliffe's EAGLE OF THE NINTH had a great influence on me as a child.
It turns out that CATO'S CAVALRY is a great story, well written and reasonably well edited. I believe that Ms Sutcliffe would have liked this book as well. If any believe that the early invention of the stirrup would not have had such impact. I suggest a little research and David Drake's Belisarius series in which the stirrup figures prominently.
A good foray into alternate history. The characters are interesting if not complex, which makes for a quick enjoyable read. May develop into a good series.
I love Roman and Dark age history. This brings both together. Good alternative history of how the Empire might NOT have ended. If you have ever toyed with the idea of how the Empire in the West might not have ended I recommend the books in this series. The character development is reasonable. The history pretty believable.
