Jada is an avid bow hunter out on vacation during elk season with three of her friends when they are viciously attacked by strangers. One of her friends is killed outright and two others are taken captive. She wants to be with them, fight beside them, but another stranger arrives and pulls her aside, blocking her path back to camp as she listens to her three friends scream.

Bryce is a tracker of rogues for the Laizahlian Council. He has worked for the Hunter Vaughn for almost three hundred years, having long given up hope of ever finding his destined mate. To his horror, when he finally finds her, it's to learn Jada is a human female from Earth. He barely arrives in time to save her from the two rogues he and his partner have been hunting these past three days. There is nothing he can do to save her three friends and he knows Jada will hate him for it. With his partner seriously wounded, Bryce must convince Jada her only hope for survival is to stay with him. Not an easy task when he admits to being a werewolf from another world.

But Bryce knows that rogue werewolves are not the only danger his new mate must face. The greatest threat will come from Vaughn himself, a powerful vampire. It is forbidden by the Council for their kind to take a human mate. If Bryce can't convince Vaughn that Jada is a born shapeshifter, his partner will likely try to kill her. He can't allow this, even if it means he must go rogue himself in order to protect her.

Jada and her three best friends go on a hunting trip together, like they do every year, to catch up, relax and have some fun. However, just as Jada and Beth make their first kill of the season, their vacation plans seem to just plummet. After having their kill stolen by two other hunters in the area, the girls make it back to their other friends, where shortly after they all get viciously attacked. One of them is killed out right, two of them are abducted, but Jada gets saved by a mysterious man, who she believes is dangerously insane.

Bryce, a werewolf who tracks rogues for the Laizahlian Council and Vaughn, a vampire who hunts them, are in the area looking for the two rogues who attacked the girls' camp. Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) for Jada, Bryce manages to save her before rogues could do her any harm, but unfortunately, can not do anything to save the others. And things just get crazier from there.

Thrust into a do or die situation, Jada has to believe in the impossible or suffer the same fate as her friends. Meanwhile, as she learns more about Bryce, Vaughn, the rogues and the world they come from, she also learns a big secret about herself and the reason why Bryce is so intent on keeping her alive.

Dark Warrior by Denna Holm is a short and fast paced paranormal sci-fi romance story. Well, truthfully, there really isn't much romance in this book (which I liked, tbh), but it is a story about being mated to another, even though the characters' relationship don't evolve romantically (maybe in the next installment?).

What I love most about this story is that the paranormal creatures in it weren't infected or cursed, etc to be that way. They actually come from another planet and were born into their supernatural abilities. Well, most of them anyway. Any humans who get infected are considered dangerous and are killed off. I really enjoyed the sci-fi part of this book, it really set itself apart from all of the other werewolf / vampire books I've read.

The writing is good and easy to follow and the characters are developed well for such a short story. When I first started reading this, I had no idea what I was getting into and didn't think I would like it as much as I did (mostly because I was a bit confused with the story line), but after the 3rd chapter or so I got totally sucked in and couldn't put it down. Also, I totally love that Jada and her friends called werewolves "weird-wolves" haha.

My biggest complaint about Dark Warrior is that I wish it was longer. There's a LOT that happens and it all takes place in less than a 24 hour time frame. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on at first, I wanted there to be more of a back story on certain characters so that the beginning would be less confusing. I would have liked to see Jada and her friends interacting more in the beginning and have had more time with Jada, Bryce and Vaughn to give them (and myself) time to let everything sink in.

Also, because of the length of this story some parts just felt rushed. With everything that Jada went through in the little time that it happend, I'm surprised she didn't have a mental break down, haha. There was one scene between her and Bryce that seemed to come a little out of left field too. I won't spoil, but it felt a bit out of place since they didn't have any real romantic connection between them.

Overall, this is a fun fast paced and action packed story, filled with supernatural creatures from another world. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for the next installment, and I hope it comes out soon because this ends on a pretty huge (but super interesting) cliffhanger!

**** I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to book tasters for introducing me to this author and thank you to Senna Holm for giving me the opportunity to read and review her work. ****

Dark Warrior is a super quick, super fun, read. I’m usually tentative when it comes to stories of this length, yet I adored this one. I really was pulled in, and I would love to see this story result in an amazing series.

In all honesty, I’m not quite sure whether to label this story as science fiction or fantasy. It’s one of those wonderful stories where the line blurs in the most wonderful of ways. We’re given fantasy creatures – vampires and werewolves – yet their existence is due to a science fiction element – another planet. It truly is a wonderful merge of the two. It made for a very interesting story, giving us the kind of wonderful world building that pulls you in deep. I could say so much about this alone; just know it’s a great way to mix the two elements together. Admittedly, I would have liked a little more depth to it, yet I feel as though such a thing will come should future stories be released in this world.

From the start, this story has action. It feels like a bit much as you’re unsure about the world, but once you’re a couple of chapters in everything comes together so well. The confusion is lifted, the characters wiggle into your heart, and the story moves at a rapid pace. It really is a wonderful story – my biggest complaint being that I wished the story were longed. I would have loved to spend even more time in this world, with the characters and their story. I really do hope there is a sequel – if not with these characters, at the very least I hope they make a cameo appearance so that we get a glimpse as to how their life progressed.

If you’re looking for a shapeshifter story with a refreshing twist, one that will pull you into the world and leave you unwilling to put the story down, then Dark Warrior is for you.

I don't like giving poor reviews, but I actually struggled to read and stay interested in this book. The writing was decent enough, but I kept waiting for something to happen. It seemed to start off ok, the big event happened and you're like, wow, then it sort of just went limp. The one moment of action took place and it seemed to lose momentum and fizzle out to a lame ending.

A very interesting story that captivated me from the beginning. Though if I’m being honest, the last few chapters I just couldn’t put them down.

I really enjoyed the world created (or should I say worlds…) and how everything was introduced to both the characters and readers. The fantasy in the story keeps us wondering, the suspense hold us to the book and the romance keeps us hoping for a happy ending.

As a werewolf, vampire and all supernatural fan I really enjoyed how they were characterized and the way it was talked opposing to what is usually seen or read but still kept some similarities.
This is an ease read book great for any occasion and fiction lover.

I would definitely recommend this story to any fantasy, suspense and romance enthusiasts.

Finally, I want to thank Denna Holm, the author of this book, for coming up and writing this amazing story.

“Dark Warrior” blends the supernatural and romance into an imaginative fantasy that opens when the camp of Jada Talbot and her three friends, all avid hunters is attacked by rogues, killing her best friend and turning the other two into vicious predators. Hearing the screams of her friends and a gunshot, Jada struggles against the arms of Bryce, an enigmatic stranger who’s tracking them.

Unable to save her friends and sensing Jada a human female is the mate he’s been searching for decades to find, Bryce is determined to protect her from the rogue werewolves, not realizing that he will also have to guard her against his partner Vaughn, a powerful vampire who will not ignore the laws of the Council on Laizahlia, one that forbids taking a human mate. Struggling against Jada’s fear and hostility Bryce must prove to Vaughn that she’s a born shapeshifter as they search for the rogues that threaten all their lives.

Set in Oregon after Jada narrowly escapes the fate of her friends, the story heats up when she’s saved by Bryce, a werewolf tracker assigned by the Laizahlian Council with his Hunter Vaughn to pursue rogue Lycaeonians who are killing in the area for sport. Her friends attacked and changed, Jada is terrified of Bryce and Vaughn, remembering werewolves and vampires of myth, and believing them all to be dark and dangerous. Yet if she is to survive she must put her superstitions to rest, and unlock the werewolf within her.

Fast-paced and emotionally-charged as Jada continually lashes out at Bryce fearing to release the creature inside her, intensity and suspense continually escalate. Skilfully Denna Holm has created an innovative combination in werewolf (Bryce) and vampire (Vaughn) that are different from the usual deadly variety in tales of old but instead are commissioned to Earth to hunt vicious creatures as they’ve done for 300 years. Compelling as events unfold that include Vaughn being incapacitated by a drug and looking for an infusion of their blood; Jada facing her transition; and all three eventually confronting the rogues and the hunters helping them, the tension percolates as the story progresses quickly and smoothly to a natural ending. Yet as much as I liked the story it felt too short, lacking background details about Laizahlia, the Council and their mission. Even the problem of the drug used to disable Vaughn is left unresolved.

Yet the characters are fascinating adding excitement and high-energy to the tale. Jada Talbot an avid bow hunter and born shapeshifter is loyal to her friends, stubborn, feisty and snappish in her fear. Yet when Bryce is in danger she’s confident and brave, determined to help him. Bryce is calm, patient and encouraging, willing to go rogue to protect Jada while Vaughn appears to be duty-oriented, and coldly assertive when he suspects his tracker loves a human.

I liked “Dark Warrior” and hope this is not the last time we’ll read about Jada, Bryce and Vaughn.

Jada Talbot along with her friends were bow-hunting Rocky Mountain elk in Oregon. Beth released an arrow when the bull stepped out. Now they just had to quietly wait until the adrenaline wore off and the bull found a place to lie down and die. But before that happened, a noise startled it and it ran back up the mountain. Beth mentioned she had seen a huge wolf with yellow eyes which actually scared her. Then a voice called out not to fire at them as two men stepped out in camouflage gear. They insisted the elk was theirs, although it absolutely wasn’t, and they warned the woman off. Despite being angry, it wasn’t worth a fight over an elk. The women would just have to go out the next day and hunt. Beth contacted Shelbie and Uma to warn them about these guys and tell them to head on back.

Bryce watched the two women. He had been a tracker for tracker for the Laizahlian Council and worked for Vaughn for 300 years. He never expected to find his mate after all this time. He silently followed them back to their camp to keep his destined mate safe from the rogues they followed as well as the human hunters who stole their elk. Jada went to check on the horses, and a strange man stepped out. Her senses usually were sharper than this; he didn’t know he was there until he rustled a branch and stepped forward. She felt a strange pull of familiarity toward him. He introduced himself as Bryce.

Bryce then warns Jada that she and her friends are in great danger and her friends must leave immediately. He will only be able to protect Jada. He confused her talking about not sensing her beast in her. He said his wolf recognized her. Then a scream came from camp. He grabbed her and told her to be silent. He said three shifters escaped from his planet, but there could have been more. Huh? She didn’t understand. Then he told her it was too late for her friends. What is happening? Who is this man? What happened to her friends?

This was an exciting beginning. Jada will need to learn from Bryce about her capabilities. She already feels the effects of being his mate. What will the future bring to her? Grab your copy and prepare to launch into the new series!

3.5 stars

This story was very well written, I think I only noticed one misspelled word in the whole thing so that should reassure those with grammar issues ;)
The story flowed well, the author writes a compelling, interesting book.
So why did it not receive 4 full or 5 stars? The characters.
The vampire who is a hunter and named Vaughn is a cold hearted jerk face. I disliked him intensely. He was ready to kill off Jada at a moments notice with no hesitation even after knowing who and what she was.
Jada, what can I say about her? She was stubborn, rude, and refused to believe what was slapping her in the face. And the entire time Bryce attempted to help her, keep her alive, help her understand she was calling him names, threatening him, trying to get away. Now, I understand that this was a crazy situation for her to be in but, like I said, it was slapping her in the face and she still acted like a ninny.
Bryce was who saved the story for me, he was patient, kind, and though he held back some information at first he did all he could to help her understand and come to terms with the new world she was facing.
I haven’t read any other books from this author prior to this one but I am going to assume there was another to this, if it is a series. I feel kind of silly not knowing this ahead of time. However, there is no need to read any others to follow along with this one.
This would be considered a safe read I do believe, no sex, no other women/men, no real relationship actually. Yes they are true mates but there is no time for that kind of nonsense while trying to save themselves from rogue wolves and turned humans/monsters.
Like said, it is very well written, not light hearted and fun, it is a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what comes next while they try to survive.

Dark Warrior – Denna Holm

“Goosebumps broke out over her arms when his sharp cry filled the air”.

This is a short story (but not short of action) based Jada Talbot and her three friends Beth, Shelbie and Uma are hunting bull elk in woods in Oregan when two men interrupt their hunting session.

“The man smiled, nothing friendly about it, blue eyes ice cold”.

Beth meets Bryce who has been watching the group from afar. What is Bryce and why is he so interested in Beth? With curiosity towards Bryce and the danger from the two male hunters as well as the rogues, who will be targeted next and why?

“I understand you struggle to believe, but what killed her is not human. The danger is real”.

Is Jada ready to enter the world of werewolves, vampires and other supernatural beings? Find out more in this supernatural cross romance novel.

“Maybe in the end it would all work out”.

I did enjoy this book but I did feel like I didn't connect properly with the characters which may be because of the length of book, or because I haven’t been introduced to this “world” before and I could possibly have gained more knowledge by reading another book first by the author. However, if you are a fan of sci-fi, romance and supernatural then I would recommend this book to you.

This book was given to me by the author via Booktasters in return for an honest review.

I think this story was well written and flowed pretty well. Unfortunately, I just could not get into it, which is odd for me because I love a shifter story usually. This was meant to be a quick read but I struggled. I could not connect with any of the characters. The main character, Jada, a female hunter, just watched one of her best friends bleed out right in front of her and she has the capacity to crack a smile over something the new stranger says? She is literally draped over her friend's cooling corpse while this happens... Everyone responds differently to grief but I did not understand her reactions and don't find them believable. Also, her love interest, Bryce, has already spotted her before he comes in the narrative and already knows she's his mate. You don't get his reaction to seeing her for the first time and all the glory of that realization that he has found the one he has longed for for centuries. I felt cheated... Don't even get me started on Vaughn. The vampire has zero personality or conscience. There was also some holes in the plot. Maybe they will be addressed the next novel, which I assume will be since it just ended pretty abruptly.

Interesting

This is an interesting book about a young woman, Jada, who discovers who, or better what, she really is. The story narrates how the shock of witnessing her friend's death, on the hands of creatures she only thought to exist in fantasy stories and movies, and the encounter of an intriguing man, Bryce, puts her world upside down. With his help, she learns about her abilities and to accept her inevitable truth.
Equipped with suspense, a nice sense of humor, love and mysterious creatures, this book is a quick read, absolutely enjoyable, and readable inn one sitting. The characters are lovely and lively described, giving the reader insight inn their plights and processes.

Keep quiet. Hunt the bull. And at the right moment shoot.
The beginning of this book takes you straight into a hunt. Two women go for a six-point bull then to be spooked by a wolf.
In chapter two it’s all turned around, to a point I was thinking what?!
This story for me was a faced paced romance and as much as Jada fought it the beast inside her was set free and found love. A mixture of Lycaeonians, vampires, and other worlds. I don’t want to give too much away but it’s a great ending to see this going further and be raunchier. I’d love to see this book adapted and another book created.
Nice!

Jada is on a 3 week hunting trip in the mountains with her best friends when the elk they are about to bring down with a bow and arrow is taken from them by two hunters with rifles. Knowing nothing but trouble can come from engaging they walk away. But watching them in relief is a lycan of the Laizahlian Council sent from another world to hunt two rogues who have escaped. His relief stems from the fact that Jada is the mate that he had given up hope of ever finding.

There is a lot going on in this book, wolves, vampires, alternate realities and its all packed into a little book of 125 pages. I confess to being a little bemused as I attempt to assimilate the book. I am off to read book 2.

This was my first time reading a "shapeshifter" story, and you know... it wasn't too bad. I thought the author set Jada's character up very well, as well as introducing her to Bryce and Vaughn's fantasy world. I wish there would have been sex in this book, but maybe this will come later on in the series?

All in all, pretty good. Fantasy/supernatural usually isn't my genre of choice, but this book ends well enough that I wanted the story to keep going.

I kept waiting, for excitement or something interesting to happen, but in vain. Some parts were over descriptive and not relevant to the story-line, and other parts that could have added depth and context, were completely skimmed over. There was potential for a great story, but the characters were two dimensional and quite bland. Things seemed to be getting interesting, but then the story ended in quite an abrupt manner.

This is the first book in this series. The book was good, I liked the characters. Now you have two entities that are know allowed to mate even though he knows she's his mate. The Hunter and the hunted. The story was good enough to keep me reading to find out what happens. I'd like to read more of where these stories are going to go. This is an interesting science fiction/fantasy short story, but I would recommend reading Soul of a Warrior (Immortal Warriors Book 1) first to get a better background of this universe. There wasn't really much romance as anticipated. But if you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy its a good fast read.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of the book, in exchange for an honest review.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because I feel the characters languid. The bond between the main characters didn't catch me and although I know Jada is Bryce's mate, it isn't enough for me to fall in love with him or identify myself with the girl. The good thing is that there's a twist in the werewolf - vampire universe where, at least in this book, they're not enemies to death.

By the end of this book, the story had me intrigued - though at the beginning, I found it a bit unnerving the way Bryce approaches Jada Talbot the way he does, and that Jada isn't more alarmed by his behaviour, also that he doesn't nutshell the world he comes from - even though there wasn't really time to explain much, though he did have a reason for feeling the way he did. Interesting book

After reading this book, I don't think I will ever go camping again. Lol. Very intriguing twist on vampires and werewolves from another planet. Four friends go out bow hunting and run into trouble. The kind that has teeth, fur and claws. Plus a couple of low down scoundrels. Very good story. I enjoyed it.
