Description: This book is a children’s dictionary that also contains illustrations to help the young readers learn new words. It also contains help sample sentences containing the words that will allow the young reader to see it in the proper context.
Relevance and Relationship: I choose this book for my reference collection because the library where I completed my field work did not have a large section of up to date children’s reference books. This is one of the main reference materials that students at the elementary level learn to use.
Purpose: The purpose of this text is to help children with vocabulary and word usage skills. It will include student friendly definitions to words that the students may not be able to comprehend. A more advanced dictionary may have complex language in the definitions that the students would not be able to understand.
Validity: The book was made by Scholastic one of the most popular educational resources that is used today.
Format: Dictionary- Print Reference- Contains over 1000 illustrations to accompany the definitions.
Arrangement and Presentation: Contains small print with words and definitions. Some words contain full color pictures that will appeal to visual learners. There are text boxes also on some pages that contain more information for certain words.
Diversity: This book will allow students as well as ELL students to get a better grasp on vocabulary.
It's alway a question: what is the purpose of a children's dictionary? I can't see their having much value as a tool for finding a formal definition of a specific word, because children's spoken vocabulary is usually much more advanced than their reading ability. If they hear 'phylum' or 'quark', it's unlikely that they're going to be able to spell it to find it in a dictionary. And how many children who understand 'can' don't know how to spell it?
That said, as children go through that phase where they suck up facts like a vacuum cleaner, the Scholastic dictionary is as good as it gets for just browsing. The fonts are well chosen--a little larger than an adult dictionary, with good use of color, bolding and italics; the illustrations are very nice (mostly photographic rather than drawings) and sparse enough not to muddle the page; and there is a short section at the back which addresses punctuation, synonyms, idioms, as well as having the basic maps and flags an American child needs.
Scholastic recommends it for ages 8 and up, but any child who can read a little might enjoy it and continue to get value into their early teens.
Absolute greatest childhood treasure. Getting my younger brother to quiz me on the flags and country information (currency, capitals, more) from the back of this dictionary too, stays a core memory. I credit this book, and the scholastic book fairs, as a large part in building my love for books and non fiction in general.

In a school that is trying to improve reading skills, having an updated and interesting dictionary could be quite useful and encourage students to look up word definitions and spellings. Because of the dictionary’s low price, many teachers could afford to have a copy in their classroom.

Most students could simply use a computer to find a definition or spelling, but it is important to teach students how to use a dictionary in print for occasions when a computer is unavailable.
