Wolfwere #4

Kane Unchained

Rate this book
Thanks to Emelda, Kane has what he’s been so desperately searching for.

Finally, he can transform him back into a wolf and return to his pack.

But, along the way, this wolf-turned-man has discovered something that is preventing him from using Covenant’s serum right away.

His humanity.

He feels personally responsible for a new breed of Enhanced soldiers. They’re stronger, faster, and smarter than before.

Can this “pack of two” defeat an army of these creatures and, you know, not die in the process?

Dick Wybrow is a Canadian author. His novels are mainly set in the US, where he grew up. A former stand-up comedian, Wybrow is a humor writer who crafts thrillers that incorporate elements of suspense, horror, mystery, science fiction and fantasy.

At the age of six, Dick was given his first book by his father. It was Wind in the Willows. Naturally, that put Dick off reading for several years.

After discovering Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the love of reading returned. And with it came the compulsion to get lost worlds like Douglas had created.

Dick lives in Auckland, New Zealand with one wife and two cats.

*****I received this free ARC from the author. I appreciate being selected to read it and provide feedback.

Another installment with Kane as he fights to get his life back. This book is packed with action and has humor sprinkled in at all the right places. An enjoyable read.

He’s becoming more human, and I’m becoming more wolf. I think I’m getting the better deal.

Way back in December of 2023, I tore through the first three (3, in case that wasn't clear) "Kane"-slash-"Wolfwere" books from author Dick Wybrow like a child ripping up the wrapping paper on his birthday presents (no, I don't get that either but that was the example most used to describe the idiom "tearing through something" on google). I have found these books to have in all cases tremendous potential, both in terms of humor and action (and excitement and what-not) even if those factors are not always achieved at the level I was hoping for. Now that I've finally gotten my canine teeth into "Kane Unchained", I can at least verifiy that Wybrow is very consistent. He delivers a good story with some decidedly exciting action sequences, even though the pacing and lack of real surprising surprises remains telling.

Bad doggy. No puns!

However, rather than just copying my previous reviews or just copying my previous reviews (this kind of copy/pasted repetition happens in the book, too, so play along), I'll go ahead and give my two paws worth of input for this long-awaited chapter. And yes, I have been eagerly looking forward to this book's release because yes, the return of yes, these are entertaining stories. Though I could do without the repeated Whitesnake analogies. One of same is enough to bring that image to mind, trust me. After all, I grew up in the 1900s and the memories of what those hairstyles did to the ozone layer not to mention the overall quality of MTV still linger. Like a sticky flood of treacle that no amount of brain-bleaching can ever hope to cleanse… which is probably how they left most of their hotel rooms, too.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but desperation is the drunk uncle of batshit ideas.

Anyway, our heroes Kane and Emelda are back in the proverbial saddle after some rather unfortunate events (and splitting up thingies) from the last book. Of course, we're almost immediately confronted with her ex, Roy, who has been released from prison for gods know what reasons. Naturally, this means that he has to commit crimes as recompense for whatever the hell is going on. Needless to say, nothing goes according to plan but owing to some extreme serendipity and an overabundance of sheer luck - which may be both repetitious and redundant - they manage to get the entire adventure moving to its intended destination. This is a big theme throughout the book (oh, good, there's a pool there…) How they manage this all the while making some really, REALLY bad decisions pretty much on a constant basis naturally makes for wacky good times for all! However, I'd recommend you try and not to smack your forehead as much as I did along the way.

I can’t tell if you’re happy or sad with a mug like that. I guess that’s just your resting bitch face.

One very positive aspect of this book that I'm glad Wybrow focuses on is that we get less of the ma chère mère et mon cher père from Kane and instead get a great deal more insight into Emelda's past (don't call her Emmy!). It seems that again just by utter coincidence (wink wink winkety wink) that her familial background also lends itself to helping at least make more sense out of some of the events that transpire. And for those of you that are keeping score back at home, this includes then the machinations and dastardly deeds of at least two cartel-connected mob groups, perhaps also two, maybe now just one super-secret global power-hungry organization and whoever else is willing to purchase, manage or even be eaten by enhanced super wolfpeople. It's enough to make anyone question their choices in life… and perhaps also wake TF up and pay attention to their surroundings before they dive back into even more trouble. Which I guess will be the theme of the next book for sure.

He could see me dodging. He could see me weaving. And as if being pursued by two hairless baby weasels!

So overall a good effort for what I can't help thinking could have been a truly great story. And despite appearances, I did like this one better than Book 3 for sure. Yes, I'll confess that my feelings towards the whole "energy levels" would have required a slightly different take on the events we're witnessing, but hey, sometimes you just want folks to have freakin' sharks with lasers on their heads when things start to go south. Or north as we do wind up leaving Mexico. I'm also not a fan of the short choppy chapterlets that have plagued each book so far, but I've had my say on that. Now I'm just being grumpy but again (points to self) old dude, lemme 'lone! But I'm thoroughly invested in the characters and am looking forward to Book 5 which may or may not be the final or penultimate or just a random addition to the series. I'm just not sure. Keep your noses to the ground and your toenails clipped fans!

P.S. The theory about Jessica Fletcher being a serial killer? Spot on. And yes, that's another dog pun!

Kane Unchained by Dick Wybrow
Wolfwere Series Book Four
Emelda Thorne needed to get a passport. Her ex had managed to get out of jail early…and he had a job to do. If she helped…she’d get a passport. It didn’t go down well, but Kane and Emelda did survive, and she got her passport. So, off to Mexico they go to take care of the monsters that Steve Janus made with the blood they’d taken from Kane.
For reasons I won’t mention (they’d be spoiler alerts), our heroes have angered the head of one of the mafia families. Unfortunately for Kane and Emelda, they happen to be in the very town where the woman used to live in Mexico. What’s new? Trouble seems to follow these two everywhere.
Kane has something to look forward to. After he takes out the monsters, which are made from his blood, so in a way, he’s connected to them, they have a serum that should return him to a wolf, permanently. He can go back to the Canadian woods and rejoin his pack and his wolf wife.
These stories are a hoot. Yes, there is a lot of blood and carnage—monsters—but what the author created from a hearse and a funeral is hilarious!

Adrenaline, Humor, and Heartwarming

Book 4 of the Wolfwere series brings Kane and Emelda traveling into Mexico, in a hearse, complete with two death boxes (coffins) as cargo (they’re empty, they checked). With constant action, bouts of hilarity (as Dick Wybrow is amazing at), and some wonderful touching scenes, we continue through the journey as Kane is trying to rid the world of the “Super Soldiers” who have now been created from his blood, and Emelda who is his chauffeur, because, as we have learned, Kane can NOT drive, while also trying to cure Kane of being human so he can return to his wolf family. Just when they think they’ve almost got everything wrapped up, another wrench gets thrown into the cogs. Their crusade shall continue!

Found myself laughing one minute, then crying the next 😁😁😁

I thoroughly enjoyed this peek into what Wolf- were Kane and his pack mate Emelda are up too !!!
In this story Kane and Emelda have gone south of the border to find the soldiers that have been made from his DNA.
What a wild , bumpy ride this was !!
Always a colorful cast of crazy characters, and extremely funny, not funny situations that had me laughing out loud one minute, and tearful the next .
Looking forward to the next in this series !!!

Just keeps getting better

This series has me in a choke hold. With each book it just keeps getting better. Kane and Elmelda have now hit every country on the North American continent. In the last book we saw some of Kane's past. And now in this one, we see more of a Emelda's past. There is intrigue and mystery aplenty and action around every corner. This is definitely one of those series that sticks with readers years after they've read it. I can't wait to read book 5, things just got real.

I am so glad that KANE and Emelda are back together .I have discovered that Kane is becoming a little more human in this book and Emelda is finding her animal side in order to survive everything they are up against. This author takes you on a rollercoaster ride that pits these characters against some very very bad people. This is not a stand alone book it's part of a series and needs to be read in order.believe me you won't be disappointed.

Don't Miss Reading This Series!

Sci Fi, Monsters & a crazy brave young woman's unbelievable oddessy. Keeps you reading past your bedtime. The snippets of humor are refreshing and situated in the most unexpected scenarios. The story line keeps you moving on at a whirlwind pace. You'll be sorry to finish book 4, as the finale is book 5. I will miss Kane when the story is complete.

Good action and fun

I enjoy the series as Kane and Emelda are well described and complex characters. Their situations are weird enough that you can't get too upset about the violence. I noticed some problems in this book that I didn't notice in the preceding books of the series: missing words, the use of the word "covenant" when the author intended to write "convent" and an issue with coñtíñuity. It wasn't enough to dampen my enthusiasm, but I hope it isn't a trend.

4 books in and still can't put them down!

Finding the strength to survive when there does not seem to be any way out is Kane and Emelda's superpower! Such a dynamic pack of two! They trust and understand each other in ways that normally takes years to do, but fighting for survival against everyone else seems to just make them stronger! Great series. Great author. Great characters.

I thought this was the end of the series, only to discover there's more to come! Don't get ne wrong, I love this series. However, I had to pre-order, then wait for this one, and I was looking forward to a conclusion. Now I have to wait even longer, as the next book isn't even available for pre-order yet!

Once You Go Wybrow, You Never Go Back!

Welcome to the penultimate book in the Wolfwere Series. Kane and Emelda are headed for Mexico, and the fight of their lives. Oh yeah, Emelda discovers that the Next Gen monsters have a weakness that can destroy them, but I won’t run the surprise. Fasten your seat belts kids, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

I have loved this series!

I don’t usually talk about the shifter type books I read to people I work with but this series couldn’t be kept quiet. I’m even having weird dreams! I just love the chemistry “friendship” between Kane and Em. Keep them coming please.

Daaaa-yam!!!

To say intense would be an understatement, especially the last major scene. Twists and turns, but always together. The pack of two struggling to stay alive, and striving to what right.
I love Emelda and Kane's chemistry and I'm extremely pleased to see there will be at least one more book. I can't wait to read it!!

Oh, dear; oh, no!

Kane and Emelda wend their way to the stronghold of the augmented in Mexico, running afoul of two separate but equally ruthless miscreants seeking an ancient set of talismans inadvertently included in Kane and Emelda’s flight from the unlamented Roy.

Great Series

What I have loved most about this series is the humor. While it is an action packed story there is a steady use.of sly sometimes sarcastic wit that pervades the dialogue. Belly laughs guaranteed.

Crazy good

Laughing and crying. Anger and surprise. This book and the series has it all. However the most appealing thing I get from this series is that animals have more compassion and realism than humans will ever have. Such a great series.

Great story . Lots of action and gore with a bit of sarcasm and laughable moments. I also like how the new book picks right up where they left off in the last book. On to the last book in the series. Happy Reading:)

Another great addition to the series

Hopefully, you've been following this whole series. As Emelda and Kane try to tie up loose ends before returning Kane to his wolf form more complications arise.

I love this series. It really grabbed me by the eyeballs and wouldn't let go. It's fun, entertaining, and just when you get totally absorbed into the action, something happens that makes you laugh until it hurts. When I was about two chapters into the first book, I bought the rest of the series.

Never disappoints!

I would absolutely want Kane as my shotgun on a road trip! Amelia and I could switch off driving and backseat driving duties!

I'd really love doing a writer's workshop with Dick. He has a unique gift of making a wolfwere relatable.

Still fun

This volume was still fun with lots of laughs, but some wasn't funny at all.

I'll continue with the series, but one more racist joke and I'm done. Thus the 4 stars this time!
