Swallow Cove #2

Pretty Buoy

Rate this book
I fell in love with the wrong man, and it changed me. Where I was once confident, I'm skittish. Where I once trusted with my whole heart, I'm guarded.

After leaving my toxic boyfriend, I flee to my family vacation home in Swallow Cove. Which takes me directly into the brooding path of bar manager Brooks Riggins.

He's large and intimidating, but with a protective streak that I didn't see coming. When my ex gives me trouble, Brooks tells him to take a hike. Not only that, he also claims to be my new man.

Brooks is as straight as they come, but he's ready to step up and play the part. In fact, it may not just be pretend, judging by the way Brooks looks at me. Especially when he catches sight of me in the lingerie I sometimes wear. My ex said the lingerie made me too feminine. Too weak.

Just a pretty boy. But as Brooks hands me all the power I need to heal and be intimate again, I can finally see the truth. I am pretty boy, and doesn't make me weak at all.

In fact, I never have to be weak again. But can I be strong enough to trust another man with my heart? Pretty Buoy is Book 2 of Swallow Cove. It can be read as a standalone, but it may be more enjoyable to read Book 1 for an introduction to all the characters in the series. Trigger past abuse, toxic ex-boyfriend.

This series is so good! I loved this book! No one will beat Fisher and Hudson but Brooks and Skylar come close!

Brooks is so swoon worthy and I adore how he treats Skylar. Skylar is coming out of a terrible relationship and he is feeling completely defeated and also unsafe in many ways. He is hiding away in Swallow Cove and the last thing he expects is meeting, and falling for, Brooks.

Brooks has never been with a man but he doesn’t make an issue out of it. He takes everything in stride because he’s a good person who has a huge heart. He wants to protect Skylar but he also understands that Skylar needs to figure things out on his own.

The acceptance Brooks has for Skylar and everything about him is so beautiful. From his lingerie (which is so sexy!) to his need to dominate during sex (which is so hot!). These two go together perfectly. They really are super sweet and amazingly sexy together!

Fisher and Hudson of course make an appearance but so do all of Brooks’ friends who welcome Skylar into their fold. I am so excited for the next books! Skylar is coming up next and then I hope we get Cash and Declan soon after! I love Poppy, she’s an awesome friend and strong female character. Brooks’ grandmother is so awesome! I just love these characters and all the quirky people who live in this town.

This series is becoming a favorite this year!!!!

Skylar is from a wealthy family, his family does developments. He recently broke up with his boyfriend, who was abusive to him. He only raised his hands once to Skylar, and Skylar left after that. But before that, for a long long time Skylar put up with his ex distancing him from everyone else in his life, mentally and emotionally abusing him, making him feel weak and conditioning him to make choices that benefited Blaize (the ex). Skylar has run away to his family's vacation home in the Ozarks to kind of lick his wounds and get space after the breakup. He has the excuse of checking in on his family run bar.

Brooks is the bar manager, and secretly he's living in a storage room at the bar, so that he can save enough money to pay for assisted living for his grandmother who's recovering from surgery. Brooks is a little grumpy and burly, and that's initially intimidating to Skylar who's been burned. But when Skylar's ex shows up, it's clear that he needs protection, and Brooks instinctively helps out and offers to be his fake boyfriend to run the guy off. But it's not so fake. While Brooks has only been with women before, he has a soft spot for Skylar from the very beginning, he's protective of him and he's attracted to him. They start something, but it's tentative, they both think it has an expiry date. But then Skylar ends up hanging around longer, and they both want a future.

This was a nice low angst story. Brooks and Skylar have a very healthy relationship. They communicate very well, and they treat each other very well. They support each other, they let things progress naturally.

This book wasn't entirely to my taste though. Skylar's ex was mentioned so much, and influenced everything about Skylar's personality and his relationship with Brooks... we just couldn't escape the ghost of Blaize. I don't begrudge the book for being what it is, the author's telling a story that she chose to tell. But personally I don't enjoy when an ex has so much of an influence/presence, making the new partner pay for the choices of the ex. It's just not a fair or pleasant dynamic. Everyone has their past and trauma that they bring into their next relationships, it does influence the person that they are, but to have it be rubbed in our faces every five pages is a little much. A little more subtlety would have been nice, and it also would have let Skylar be his own person and shine through as his own person rather than having him constantly living in a shadow.

Another complaint, a minor nitpick. And honestly, the references in this particular book weren't as bad as some of the other books, so I'm kind of bearing a grudge from past books in this same world. The author's trying to be cute and funny with the sexual puns in the local businesses, but it comes off as sexually harassing the customers. At one point, Skylar says that he'd prefer to avoid Just the Sip because he doesn't want to be subjected to sexual innuendos all night, and that right there is my argument for why such pervasive use of sexual puns in businesses is sexual harassment.

Some notable moments:

I love a supportive and non-homophobic Grandma "Minnie clucked. “Such a good boy. So handsome too. Both of you.” She sighed. “I wish my grandson was gay. Instead, I think he’s attracted only to silly videogames.”"

Very real representation of domestic violence. "He’d hit me only once. It was everything that came before that which hurt me the most. I wasn’t afraid of Blaize’s fists, but I was terrified of his words. Of what they’d make me think about myself. Of the ways they’d reach inside and twist me up into the uncertain, anxious mess I’d been with him."

"I watched him leave the room, then went to pull the pancakes from the oven. They were blueberry, and he’d made a smiley face with the fruit. This man was a freaking treasure. It’d taken exactly one time for me to mention my love of blueberries for them to appear in my fridge."

5 lacey stars!! **Mild spoilers!**

And absolute joy of a book to read!

Book two in the Swallow Cove series does not disappoint. Skylar arrives in Swallow Cove after an extremely toxic relationship and break-up with his controlling boyfriend, Blaize. He takes residence at his family vacation home and enters into a deep depression, feeling used and self-conscious.

Upon arrival, he goes to a local The Rusty Hook pub. Being the son of the owner, he lets himself in. But the pub's manager, Brooks Riggins, arrives and confronts Skylar. Brooks is big, moody and straight as an arrow. Skylar is his total opposite.

When Blaize stalks Skylar to his house, Brooks steps up and uncharacteristically offers to stay with Skylar to warn off Blaize.

But Brooks begins to find himself inexplicably becoming drawn to Skylar with feelings he's never had before. And when he discovers Skylar's secret, he falls even harder for the younger man.

Written with magnificent world building (including a map of Swallow Cove), a hilarious sub-set of characters and deep, heartfelt feelings, this book was a true pleasure to read. With Brooks help and giving nature, Skylar regains his confidence and lowers his guard surrounding his heart.

The heat is moderate and paced perfectly. The inclusion of Brooks' Grandma is a brilliant stroke of genius, bringing out Brooks gentle and loving side.

I cannot wait to read book three, Knockin' Boats.

I’ve been so excited to read Skylar and Brooks’s story since meeting them in Dock Tease! Skylar has fled to Swallow Cove to escape his toxic ex-boyfriend. He needs time to be on his own and try to build himself back up after being torn so badly. Coming to Swallow Cove also meant doing some work with for his dad which means checking in on one of the businesses he owns. Which leads him to Brooks. The surly bar manager who doesn’t seem all that excited Skylar is there. Brooks doesn’t mean to scare Skylar, especially when he sees the glimpse of fear in his eyes when Skylar catches a grumpy Brooks. The last thing he would ever do is hurt someone. He also can’t let Skylar know that he is crashing in the storeroom at the bar. In order to afford care for his grandma he works a lot of hours and has to save every penny he has. But things start to shift between Skylar and Brooks the longer Skylar sticks around. And for the first time Brooks has a crush on a guy. A surprise but not unwelcome. Especially when he gets to know Skylar. And when Skylar’s ex finally tracks him down, Brooks has no problem stepping in to pretend to be Skylar’s new boyfriend. And it’s an act that doesn’t feel like one the more they get to know one another. But Brooks knows it will take time to earn Skylar’s trust and heart after what he has been through. And though he fears Skylar will leave, he knows Skylar is worth that risk. I loved Skylar and Brooks! They were so great together. Brooks may want to protect Skylar but he also knows he has to give Skylar his space and time to find his confidence again. He’ll be there by his side rather than just his protector. And I loved Skylar’s journey to find himself again. After his ex beating down who he was, Skylar takes his life back into his own hand to be exactly who he is meant to be. These two were so sweet as they fell in love. Skylar may be worried about trusting someone again and Brooks is afraid of being left behind, but yet when it comes to one another, they don’t give up so easily. Such a fun series so far! There are several people I want books for and with word on the next one, I cannot wait to see how it plays out!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"Our eyes met, and time seemed to stop, hanging there indefinitely, waiting for us to acknowledge the truth that remained unsaid.

This was so much more than a hookup."

I have a confession to make. I have no idea how I didn't put together that Skyler, one of the MCs of this book, was the same Skyler who skypes in for weekly movie nights with his friends in the Rom-Com Reboot series! It took until he was booting up his laptop and the whole gang appeared for it to hit me! I can't believe I didn't put it together, but once I did it made this story even more enjoyable than it already was. I mean we know from that series that everyone is worried about Skyler and his controlling boyfriend, but Skyler has been tight lipped about the whole thing. I was glad we were able to finally get his story.

Getting over your abusive ex definitely gets a bit easier with a man like Brooks by your side. I liked how he supported Skyler and let everything move at his pace. I also liked how Skyler getting a boyfriend wasn't seen as a magical fix for all of his previous issues. Yes it helped to have someone to lean on, but Skyler was determined to be his own man and he sure as hell proved it! Brooks also had a bit of healing to do. He's spent so long being closed off because of his fears of being left, but Skyler helped to show him it was okay to let people in. It was okay for those who loved him to be a part of his life.

"This was more than sex, more than a fling.

It had the power to be everything."

I loved catching up with the local Swallowers. Cash is still determined to get his grumpy B&B owner and I think he may be closer than he thinks. We also had some drama playing out between ex best friends Sawyer and Ash! I'm so glad their story is next in Knockin' Boats. Nothing I love more than an enemies-to-lovers with a bi awakening thrown in!

Swallow Cove had a way of taking people in and making them family. Skylar comes to hide from his ex, who made him feel less than he was, where he meets the bartender/ manager of the bar his dad owns. Brooks does everything in his power to provide for his grandma, including losing his time for real life.
These two meet under not great circumstances, yet realize they were meant to be in the others' lives. Both need to heal and trust their hearts before they are able to take that next step. Brooks core friend group is amazing and accepts Skylar full heartdly, especially when they see the changes in Brooks. A fun low angst read with all the puns that will leave you smiling.
This story goes along with the events of DOCK TEASE, so it is not necessary to read prior but gives you more background to some of the events happening.

Fake relationship turns good.

I'm enjoying this Swallow Cove series. Skye is looking for peace, after leaving an abusive relationship. He's hurt and vulnerable, with very little self esteem. He finds Brookes, who turns out to be a true knight in shining armour. I so enjoyed these two together, initially it appears that Brooks is doing all the rescuing, however all is not what it seems. I liked how both guys helped one another to grow and develop. Their relationship starts out as fake, but quickly turns into more. It's quick to read, it ends so well, the intimate scenes are hot hot hot, and there's no misunderstandings or complications. Nice story, full of romance, with some lovely secondary characters.

I received an ARC of this story, which in no way influenced my opinion.

Loved it. This has everything I like in a romance. The MCs are engaging with heaps of chemistry. They have enough problems to keep the story interesting without being weighed down by them. There's a large friend group but they fit seamlessly into the story without taking over.

The writing is light and witty without being OTT, despite the impression you might get from the place names of the town.

Apparently this runs concurrently with the first book, which I haven't read and this had no impact on my enjoyment. In fact I'm eager to read Fisher and Hudson's story.

A low angst and high heat read.

Highly recommended.

Can you open your heart after it’s been hurt. These two didn’t think they could but once they find each other they realize what they would miss out on if they don’t. These two was great with each other. I love the patience Brooks has while Sky works in healing. The writing was good the smexy was good and I love the found family.

For future me.

Note: This story takes place along the same timeline as the first book in the series are there are some spoilers for that book. I recommend reading in order if only to get a solid background on the people and town of Swallow Cove

Skylar Addison has gone to Swallow Cove supposedly to check on his dad’s investments there – the local bar/restaurant and a boating business. But really he’s escaped from an abusive relationship with his ex and to try go get himself together. He’s hiding out there more than anything. But now he’s gotten a therapist and he’s trying to do what he’s there to do.

He meets the big broody manager of the bar, Brooks Riggins, who shows him around. They seem to get along OK but something seems a tiny bit off. Then his ex shows up and not knowing where else to go he shows up at the bar. Brooks of course takes him in and offers him the “break room” for the night. Really it’s where Brooks has been living while his grandmother is recuperating at an assisted living place that required them to sell the house to cover the expense. Brooks works crazy hours to continue to keep here there as she recovers from a broken hip. He doesn’t really have permission to “live” at the bar, but he can’t afford anything else. It’s just him and his grandma when his mother dropped him off and took off. She’s an addict and cannot be counted on for anything 🙁

Sky figures it out pretty quick and when Brooks offers to act as his “boyfriend” to chase off Blaise, the horrible ex, well Sky can’t say no. And Brooks needs a place to stay anyway – so win/win. But the more time they spend together, the les “fake” this relationship seems to be. And Brooks isn’t so much bothered by being into a guy as he is about having actual feelings for anyone. This hasn’t happened to him before. Plus there is Sky’s skittishness after being mistreated by his ex. But if it’s only temporary, he can be what Sky needs, right? Except what if they don’t want it to be temporary 😉 You’ll have to read to see what happens.

Honestly I feel like DJ Jamison just gets better and better with each book. This story is adorable! She has a way of writing about real issues without being preachy or grim. Sky recovering from a bad breakup with an even worse boyfriend was very well done. He’s lost himself in this awful relationship with a controlling man who has made him question his own worth in every way – sexually, intellectually, emotionally. Brooks is just the right guy to help him see just how wonderful he really is. It’s quite the surprise to Brooks, but he really likes Sky before he realizes his genuine attraction to the man. I adored how much he understood what Sky needed – pretty much intuitively. Maybe it was Sky coming to him when the evil ex showed up and how willing Brooks was to take Sky as he is – lingerie and all – that cracks Brooks just a little bit. With his abandonment issues, it’s clear that he does not trust easily. He’s ok with being a distraction and a support for Sky because he thinks there a end coming to this relationship. Sky will be moving on and back to Seattle at some point. The longer Sky is there and the more time he spends with Brooks, the closer they get. Even though Brooks hasn’t been with a guy before, he in no way sees Sky as a weak or too feminine or whatever line of BS his ex was feeding him. He sees a strong man who is getting his feet back under him and he’s determined to help in anyway he can. But he won’t take over despite his protective nature. He understands that Sky has to make his own way and take control back in all areas of his life, even if that means a little worry 😉

The growth of both of these characters in this book are heartfelt and believable. They each have their baggage from the past that keep them from opening up to each other. It’s only after some time and after repeated instances of them letting each other be who they truly are that they give in to the fact that are head over heels for one another. With family and friends encouragement and maybe a little bit of meddling and good-natured teasing too, they step up in big ways for each other. I loved everything about this story including all the time with the other quirky residents of this quirky town (another thing this author does so well). I really cannot way for the next book either. Sawyer and Ash are going to clash and I am here for it! Highly recommended.

Pretty Buoy by DJ Jamison is book 2 in the Swallow Cove series. I feel like you could read it as a standalone but would be better if read after book 1.

Skylar Addison is in Swallow Cove to see his father’s investment, The Rusty Hook, but also lick his wounds after breaking up with his abusive ex. Brooks Riggins is the bar manager and does not welcome Sky’s presence. Brooks and Sky start spending time together and Brooks realizes that he is attracted to Sky though he’s only ever been with women. Brooks was like the perfect boyfriend. He knew that Skylar was nervous and anxious about starting anything new due to his toxic ex, but he gave Sky whatever he needed. I was really glad when Sky finally told him that he needed to take a little bit too. Brooks would have given his whole self and then had nothing left. I was really glad that Sky recognized that. The whole relationship was so healthy and loving.

It was great getting to see all of the other group of friends. I am really intrigued by Sawyer/Ash and Cash/Declan. It was amazing seeing Skylar putting his ex and the dishonest investors in their place. I cannot wait for the next book.

ARC received from Neon Rainbow Reviews for an honest review

I haven't read the first Swallow Cove book, but that did not affect my reading or enjoyment of Pretty Buoy at all.

When they not-so-meet-cute, I immediately felt Brooks protective streak some out, and I was all oooh, I am going to like this man. And I was not wrong.

And I loved how, when they became more to each other, he saw the man that Skylar thought had been totally destroyed with his former partner,

And oh, how I adored how they showed that other douche hahah

I loved the people and the town of Swallow Cover, it just gave off that laid back vibe.

I need to go back and read the first book now, and am looking forward to the 3rd.

I enjoyed this second installment in the Swallow Cove series, overall, but had a few mixed feelings about it.

I liked the individual characters of Brooks and Skylar quite a bit and their respective backstories were well thought out. Brooks' obligations to his grandmother and background with his mother were heartbreaking, and Skylar's problems with a stalkery ex-boyfriend was compelling. What didn't quite do it for me was the fact that I didn't quite buy the fact of them together. There's always some element of instalove in romance but it was just a bit too far for me to believe in Brooks' bisexual (pansexual?) awakening with Skylar, at least based on his character.

But even if I didn't quite buy their relationship totally, I enjoyed their support of one another. One other aspect I enjoyed was the depiction of characters involved in managing and creating businesses, an area that isn't often covered in MM romance, at least not well in my opinion. Here it is, particularly with Brooks challenges in planning and opening a new resort in the Swallow Cove area to be quite interesting.

Looking forward to the next installment.

I’ve found that this series is much more serious than the suggestive names imply. The books are actually good contemporaries with conflict and real plots. I’ve surprisingly enjoyed both this and the previous one the latter having been read for a challenge so it wasn’t really voluntarily as far as book choice goes. It was interesting that the two stories occurred concurrently.

The characters were great. Brooks was the perfect boyfriend. He was protective but stood back when he was asked to. He was very put together despite his inauspicious start in life. Skylar was sweet and very strong. He wasn’t the whimpering wallflower he seemed like he might be at the beginning. Their sex was hot (but maybe that’s because I like men in silk and lace.)

I had a hard time keeping track of the friends although I liked them. They were too much alike and they had similar names like Cash and Ash. But not that they necessarily sounded alike as those do but they go together like how families’ kids’ names go together—similar length, similar era when popular, etc. Like Skylar and Sawyer and Blaize. And they had similar jobs. Anyway, their personalities didn’t show a whole lot and they weren’t in the story enough. I hope their stories are to come because I really liked them in the last book. I really appreciate that at least one was female.

I like this quote:
The real nightmare wasn’t that Blaize might assault me [again]. It was that he’d already destroyed me from the inside out.

It’s the opposite of the sticks and stones axiom and I totally agree. It’s how people end up being “gaslighted”. It starts by the abuser taking their inner weaknesses and using them to manipulate the person. (I’d really like to study more about gaslighting. The mind is fascinating.)

It was also great that the grandmother explained that she talked to her daughter and the woman being an addict didn’t make the mother stop loving her child.

It’s my view on how I deal with my daughter. She’s ill with the disease of drug addiction and it greatly isn’t her fault. She went through horrific trauma during her early years and her mind didn’t develop the way a “normal” child would. I couldn’t stop her from self-medicating with street drugs. So now she’s an addict. Should I abandon her? People’s brains stop developing when they start using drugs heavily. She’s still a teenager emotionally. She’s ill and has a disease which sometimes makes her do things she wouldn’t do if she were clean and sober. Do I enable her? I hope not. But am I there when she calls me and needs a shoulder to cry on or just someone to talk to or get advice? Of course. I haven’t written her out of my life because she’s sick. She’s a person and she will only survive if she knows she is loved unconditionally. It’s just important to have really rigid boundaries such as I won’t talk to my daughter unless she at least seems sober and basically talking and driving her to rehab is all I’m willing to do unless she gets clean. Okay enough about my life which is probably annoying in a review.

It was so cool that one of the main characters was willing to try bottoming but he just really didn’t enjoy it enough to finish. But they did something else so he came to completion and he really didn’t bottom much after that. It was realistic and cool that he was willing to try.

I liked how the story ended.

I oddly really like this series and will read the next one.

There were two readers for this book, Alexander Cendese and Iggy Toma. The narrator used for Brookes wasn’t a great choice. He sounded like a surfer dude or frat boy rather than the scowling huge guy that frightened customers, as the character was described. The reader was loud and for the first half of the book usually sounded like he was ready to party. He was exhausting to listen to. He didn’t leave a lot of space between sentences but that could be the audio engineer.

The other narrator was excellent and enjoyable. I’m guessing he was Iggy Toma because I’ve really liked him in the past but I can’t be sure. He was a huge contrast as his voice was very mellow.

I was so excited to finally get my hands on this book. We previously meet Skylar in this authors Rom-Com Reboot Series and after getting a small glimpse of him I knew I wanted his whole story.

Skylar just recently gotten out of a really toxic relationship and decided to go to Swallow Cove where his family has a vacation home and own multiple properties. Not wanting his family to know how he was feeling decided to help his dad out while he was in town and look into one of the properties he owns. This is where he meets Brooks, the grumpy bartender.

Brooks is the bar manager at the Rusty Hook and works long hours and days to make enough money to help his grandmother which leaves him no time for himself and has to sleep at the bar to make ends meet. He is also Fishers cousin who we meet in the first book.

Due to Brooks sleeping at the bar he doesn’t want anyone knowing about it and especially the bar owner son. Because of this the first meeting between Brooks and Skylar definitely gets off on the wrong foot. Luckily things get fix and Brooks realizes how his actions have cause Skylar to be wary of him and apologizes and becomes more friendly with him. Noticing something different about him.

In the beginning I enjoyed the way Brooks and Skylar becomes fast friends and really gravitates towards one another. I liked how Brooks brought him into his friend circle and really embrace him after letting some of his guard down. When he finds out about Skylars toxic ex boyfriend he really becomes protective of him and takes him under his wing. Not wanting anything to happen to him. This is where their relationship starts to change.

I can’t even express how much I loved how caring and understanding Brooks was with Skylar and his needs. Always making sure his wasn’t crossing any lines or boundaries and always making sure he was in control of everything to make him feel safe and comfortable. He really made sure to take care of him. I loved especially how he tried to win over Skylars cat Freddy because he mention that he can’t trust himself or his judgement and knows if his cat likes someone then it means they are a good person and since then Brooks went out of his to becomes friends with Freddy.

Brooks really empowered Skylar and helped him become more comfortable in himself and who he is. I loved the overall concept of the story that just because someone is considered a “pretty boy” that doesn’t mean they are “weak” or “not a real man” and can be strong and not always fit into a bubble that people put them in. Skylars ex really did a number on him making him feel small and not liking the fact that he wears lingerie which he believes is too “feminine”. Brooks on the other hand absolutely loves it and loves Skylar wearing it and doesn’t think it makes him weak or feminine. He really encourages him to embrace it and helps him realize that he doesn’t have to wear it for anyone else but himself as long as it makes him happy. It also doesn’t hurt that Brooks likes him just the way he is and doesn’t want to change him.

He always makes sure that Skylar knows how much he likes him and doesn’t just like him cause his pretty or wears lingerie like women do because he’s only been with women in the past but because he genuinely likes him and that includes his male body and everything that comes with it. Slowly this helps open Skylar up and let his guard down and learn to trust Brooks and slowly start trusting himself again.

When it comes to the spicy scenes I really loved how patient and supportive Brooks was when it came to giving Skylar the time and space he needed to feel comfortable in his own skin again. He needed to know he can trust him completely and heal from the hurt of his past. Through all this he learns new things about himself and what he likes and dislikes. Brooks gave him full control over his body and he was willing to go as fast or as slow as he needed.

I absolutely love all the side characters and Brooks friend group. I loved seeing Brooks grandma and seeing how much he just loves and adores her and just wants what’s best for her. You see that everything he does, he does for her and make sure she is well taken care of. Also seeing Skylar completely understand and love him and even more for it just shows what kind of man he is. With the friend group I can’t wait to read more about them in their own stories whenever those come out. I also loved seeing Skylar reconnect with his friends from Seattle and really try to reconnect with them and build a stronger friendship. I always love a good cross over or even easter eggs and this author does it good.

The overall plot and build up of the story flowed really well and I felt like everything was fleshed out perfectly. Things develop pretty quickly with Skylar and Brooks and by the halfway mark they are together and working on a relationship and building a more healthier foundation. But I enjoyed seeing them get together and build a life together and to see Skylar stand up to his toxic ass ex boyfriend and finally beat him at his own game. Prove to him that he’s not weak and underestimated him.

Overall this was another great book in this series and I’m so happy to finally see Skylar get his happy ending after all the shit his been through and Brooks is so perfect for him. I love them so much. I can’t wait to get to read about Sawyer and Ash next and see how these two former friends become more. The ending was perfect and I loved seeing both Skylar and Brooks together and building a future. It’s so nice to see him finally find his purpose and home in Swallow Cove and with the resort. I loved seeing everyone and its jobs there and growing. Even the bonus story was absolutely perfect. There is so much more I can say about this book but I think I went on too long already but just know this series is absolutely worth the pick up if you love low angst and quirky characters and places with found family you won’t regret it.

This book was epic. I loved book one, but this one, this one was over the moon spectacular. It's the reason I bought both books because of the cover and the summary.

After a bad break up leaving him questioning so much Skylar comes to Swallow Cove to hide away because he's feeling vulnerable, hurt, down, and so many other emotions. His dad gives him a 'project' to check in on the pub that he owns. Skylar pulls himself out the bed and does that. His first meeting with Brooks doesn't go so well, but as they get to know each other things pick up so much.

Brooks is thought to be straight, but as he is there for Skylar as a friend, protector, and fake boyfriend; he discovers that he's not. He puts Skylar first letting him do whatever it is he needs as he recovers his self-esteem and courage. Brooks was sweet and made my heart melt with how he treated Skylar so wonderfully.

Skylar's ex put him down and made him feel like he couldn't do things. He said awful things about Skylar's love for sexy things like lingerie which the way that DJ describes it in here makes Skylar look gorgeous and handsome in it. I was happy that no one that found out (minus the awful ex) made fun of him. He even had someone offer to make him some that would fit him because she made it herself.

They fake date at first to get the ex to back off because he is horrible. Even shows up trying to get Skylar back who clearly doesn't want to go with him. Brooks and Skylar kiss to prove that unlike what most think, Brooks is not straight. That leads to some hot hooking up. Hooking up and sex that Brooks let Skylar take the lead on after how he was treated in the past. Brooks even is calling Skylar the alpha and letting himself bottom so that Skylar can heal emotionally from the things that were said to him. I was so in love with this book and the sex was hot. Loved Brooks being tied down at one point to help Skylar feel comfortable.

The resort gets going and is about to soft open when the book wraps up. Oh and Skylar took on not only his ex, but his ex's friends who were rivals of his dad trying to open the resort to start with that we first saw in book one. Skylar got his courage and his fight back when he stood up to them before the end. I was so happy about what happened because the ex was shown up and it was better than a punch I thought.

I can't wait for Knocking Boats to come out so we get Sawyer and Ash's story. I'm looking forward even more so to Cash and Declan's book when it comes out. I am so glad that I found this series. This book is going to stick with me for a long time. Even now I wish I could reread it because it was that wonderful. There was no miscommunications and was so happy that Brooks grandma gets to live at the resort to be near him again. I was happy no third act break ups because they talked and expressed their feels. Thanks for writing this book DJ.

Brooks and Skylar's romance was such a cute and entertaining read! Despite coming across as a gruff, intimidating guy, Brooks was a total teddy bear at heart. I loved how attentive and kind he was to Sky even when they were strangers, and if I had any doubts about his character they were squashed by seeing how hard he worked to provide for his grandma. When Sky arrived in town he was a shadow of himself, dealing with the aftermath of a bad relationship and trying to find his confidence again. At a surface level, Brooks was the last person who should have made Sky feel safe, but as the two of them interacted at the pub their chemistry sparked to life naturally. I don't think Brooks would have acted on his attraction had Sky's ex not shown his ugly mug, and as angry as it made me to see that guy scare Sky, it was a catalyst for bringing Sky and Brooks even closer together. The two of them were so freaking sweet together, and it made me so happy to see them support each other and lift each other up without becoming a crutch to hide from the challenges they needed to tackle on their own. For Sky, his personal growth was about regaining his confidence, finding a place he could call home, and taking ownership of a development project that he was passionate about. For Brooks, it was about learning to let down his walls and accept support from the people who loved him without seeing himself as a burden. Things weren't completely smooth sailing for Brooks and Sky--they had to deal with unsavory business men, meddling family members, and their own insecurities about being ready for a romantic relationship. In each situation, they handled things with an open mind and honest communication, and I think that's why I never doubted that their relationship would last through it all. I was thrilled by how happily things worked out for the two of them, and with a new resort ready to open its doors who knows what surprises are in store for Swallow Cove's residents next!

Here is D.J. Jamison's latest and highly anticipated "Pretty Buoy." It's the second novel in the new Swallow Cove series.

["I fell in love with the wrong man, and it changed me.

But can I be strong enough to trust another man with my heart?"]

Our sweet, sunshiny (sometimes sassy) Skylar was utterly perfect for our grumpy, gruff (and sometimes grinning) Brooks. They balanced each other out, listened to each other's boundaries, taught each other to grow beyond their perceived goals.

It was almost easy. Almost. Sorta. If not for Sky's ex and the drama with the construction and a few other minor things. But their love was easy and comfortable and utterly beautiful. They held each other tight a and held each other up.

Another glorious chapter in another adorkable town in DJ's universe.

Trigger Warnings: toxic ex, past abuse, and more.

I have a soft spot for stories like this - lots of hurt / comfort with a character finding safety and trust after an abusive relationship, and DJ Jamison wrote it so well!

I’d been looking forward to this book ever since I read Dock Tease - it was clear that something was going on between Brooks and Skylar and that Skylar was hiding from something or someone. Despite their first meeting being far from ideal, Brooks was intrigued by Skylar and quickly took the role as his protector when he realised what was going on with Skylar’s ex. Their story was full of tenderness and sweetness, together with the usual lightness and humour from this author.

Even if this story was on the sweeter side, there were some scenes where Skylar’s past abusive relationship came to the surface as he processed what he’d been through, and it made my heart ache. Brooks was so great and patient with him, and I loved how he turned out to be a big teddy bear under the slightly growly surface. They both had some fantastic personal growth, and even if they had their insecurities, they were great at communicating and being honest with each other. And the lacy lingerie that Skylar liked to wear was definitely a hot bonus!

Pretty Buoy was overall a fantastic read with some lovely hurt / comfort! It was easy to feel invested in the characters and plot, and I loved the tropes and pace of the story. Even if this one can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading Dock Tease first though, since it will give some more background to the plot as well as the small town and its people.

This is the second book in the Swallow Cove series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone but you would get a better understanding of the secondary characters if you read book 1 Dock Tease first. This is the story of Skylar and Brooks. Skylar has escaped to Swallow Cove after leaving his ex boyfriend Blaize. The relationship was toxic and Skylar slowly lost his self confidence and his sense of self. He is hiding away trying to recover from the relationship. He is afraid of everything and is trying to rebuild himself one day at a time. Staying at his parents house, he is roped into checking out one of his father's investments. It is the only way to keep his parents at bay. While trying to avoid people and interrupt the bar staff he goes over early in the morning before service starts. Unfortunately not early enough. He is challenged by Brooks who believes him to be a vacationer sneaking in. Not an auspicious start. Brooks is large and can be loud when needed. He is the manager of the bar that Skylar's father owns. He is working every shift that he can to earn enough money to keep his grandma at the assisted living home. Brooks isn't welcoming for the unexpected visit by Skylar. He doesn't want Skylar to know that he has been sleeping in the storage room on an air mattress to save money. It is the only way he can keep his grandmother in the care that she needs. His guilt results in him being forceful to Skylar. This of course frightens Skylar and he runs off. Even with that short interaction, Brooks senses that Skylar needs protection. This is their story. When Skylar's ex starts harassing him, Brooks steps up to protect Skylar. Both Skylar and Brooks have walls that need to come down. The friendship they build, slowly starts to erode those walls. And when the time comes for Skylar to stand on his own, Brooks supports him from the sidelines and lets Skylar grow. This book is well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed the story. The characters were interesting and the story had a good pace to it. I look forward to more by this author.

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

This book is so good! I love Brooks and Skylar. Skylar and Brooks appear in Dock Tease, book one in Jamison’s Swallow Cove series. (Although, Skylar is first present in Jamison’s Rom-Com Reboot series). In this book, Brooks (who is straight) comes to Skylar’s rescue when his awful ex, Blaize, tries to resume contact with him. He tells a little fib about being Skylar’s new boyfriend to get Blaize off of his back. (Blaize is a serious tool and all around terrible human being).

Despite the fake boyfriend status, the friendship and newfound attraction heating up between Skylar and Brooks is very real. Brooks leans into his desire for Skylar wholeheartedly. Brooks helps Skylar take his confidence back. He helps Skylar regain control over certain aspects of his life as well. These two men have amazing chemistry and I especially appreciate the honesty and respect between the two of them. Skylar’s love of lingerie/lace/pretty things is empowering and Brooks’s appreciation and acceptance of it really helps to bolster Skylar’s confidence and self-expression. Brooks takes great care of Skylar and Sky helps Brooks to let down his shields and open his heart up to people.

Sky and Brooks navigate turning their fake boyfriend status into real dates and a real relationship. I love the progression of their relationship into something less casual and more lasting. This couple has the cutest HEA. The epilogue made me smile. The side characters in this book are fantastic. It was great seeing most of the folks from the first book again. Poppy is a gem. (I appreciate the aro ace representation provided by her character ).

Also, I cannot wait for Ashton and Sawyer’s book, up next in the series. It’s going to be so good! You can feel the tension between those two in this book!

I’m enjoying this series so far, but this book was just okay. It required a bit more suspension of belief for several things, and it could have been tightened up quite a bit. That being said, I read books 1 and 2 back to back, and they have an overlapping timeline, so several scenes were repeated, just from these characters’ POVs. However, the pacing was much slower for this book, and I did skim quite a bit after 60%.

Character development is good, but I did want better physical descriptions of the characters, as well as specific ages. Brooks and Sky are sweet and sexy together. Sky is trying to build himself back up from an abusive relationship, and Brooks is a big, soft teddy bear with him. For me, this reads as more of a GFY trope rather than a bi-awakening. I think it makes more sense with Brooks’ character and history. However, Brooks does mention to his grandma that he’s bi, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ (but that’s not how I saw it). And the random throwaway thought of maybe being pan that Brooks has is just odd…and it’s never brought up again, so I thought it was pointless…and an even bigger leap.

The intimacy Brooks and Sky share is pretty steamy, but not as frequent as book 1. I didn’t connect to them as well as Hud and Fish, but I still liked their story. I think it was just a little too unbelievable for me personally to accept that a straight guy is suddenly super into a man, and not only that, but he has zero hesitation of getting intimate (even craves it) and bottoming. And not just bottoming every now and then, but as their normal dynamic as Sky prefers to top.

The plot for this book was a little boring, but it does move the overarching world-building along. I feel like there could have been more drama created with the ex. I am gonna take a break and come back to book 3 so I don’t burn out, because I am enjoying this little town this author has created.

Pretty Buoy is the second book in the Swallow Cove series, set in a charming small tourist town of the same name. This enjoyable, low-angst, bi-awakening story deals with healing from past traumas and finding oneself and a place to belong.

The book takes place simultaneously with Dock Tease, where we first caught glimpses of Skylar and Brooks, and it’s wonderful to now get their full story.
I have to admit, I enjoyed this book more than the first. While both books feature lovable main and side characters, this one offers greater emotional depth and character development that made for a more relatable experience.

I really liked the progression of Brooks and Skylar’s relationship from strangers to friends to lovers. Their natural gravitation toward each other was lovely to see.
Both main characters are dealing with past traumas—Skylar with the psychological fallout from a toxic relationship, and Brooks with abandonment issues -, but their journey of healing together is wonderfully portrayed. Despite the serious topics, D.J. Jamison gently guides both characters and readers through them.
Brooks’s patience, understanding, support, and acceptance are instrumental in Skylar’s journey of self-love and self-discovery. At the same time, Skylar’s empowerment primarily comes from within. He needed to "save" himself, and Brooks allowed him to be his own hero while offering unwavering support. Skylar, in turn, helped Brooks be less guarded and realise that letting people who love him into his life could lead to a better sense of well-being and belonging to a community.

One aspect I really appreciate in this book is how Brooks and Skylar’s relationship didn’t magically fix either of them. It took time and effort from both, making the relationship and the story stronger and more realistic.

All in all, it was a lovely, fun and entertaining book with a well thought out small town setting and some really intriguing characters.
I’m looking forward to new adventures in Swallow Cove!

I received a copy of this book from Neon Rainbow Reviews, and this is my unbiased review.

PRETTY BUOY is the second book in the Swallow Cove series. It can be read as a stand alone but reads much better if you read it in the order the author intended.

When Skylar comes to Swallow Cove it's to hide and try to get some control back over his life. He left his abusive boyfriend and just can't seem to get his feet back under him. To keep his parents away he agrees to get on some of the businesses they own while he's there. Meeting Brooks, the bar manager at one of the businesses, Skylar appreciates that he's an attractive man but his size and distain for him being there makes him more than a little nervous. But Skylar soon learns Brooks is the most trustworthy man he's ever met. He thinks he's straight but when he offers to pretend to be his boyfriend to keep the ex away Skylar isn't so sure anymore.

Brooks job is his life. He takes after his grandma and lives and works in the bar. When the owners son shows up he can't find out Brooks has been living in the storage room. There is something about Skylar that has Brooks wanting to take care of him in ways he's never felt before. A lot of Brooks friends fall somewhere on the queer scale but it's not something he ever considered for himself until Skylar. Can Brooks protect Skylar from his ex and protect his heart at the same time? Will Skylar be able to trust him and let him in after not trusting himself to choose the right man?

I am loving this series and all the characters in it. Brooks and Skylar are such a good match. Their chemistry is chart topping and it's so easy between them. I loved seeing Fisher and Hudson again but I can't wait to get Cash's book.

I was given a free copy of this book.

I really enjoyed this book with Brooks and Skylar and the found family in Swallow Cove. When Sky arrived in Swallow Cove to recover from an abusive relationship, he was broken, unsure of himself, wanting nothing more than to hide out. When he needed to check out progress at the family owned bar in town, he came across Brooks, the manager. After a rocky start, the two spent a lot of time together, Brooks helping to rebuild Sky’s confidence and outlook. When the ex arrives in town, Brooks was there to protect, care and support him, and the straight guy was suddenly open to anything Sky wanted or needed from him. Brooks’s care for Sky at this fragile time was a beautiful example of what a supportive, loving partner should be. I felt the author gave a realistic portrayal of how toxic verbal abuse and manipulation can be in a relationship, and the physical and emotional impact on the abused partner.

The side characters are all part of a found family of locals with the partners they find being folded into the group. Love, loyalty, family, honesty, caring and unwavering support for each other all are important in the book. Loved Grandma and the older residents in town, hated the ex, could easily visualize the beautiful scenery through the world building of the small town of Swallow Cove, and got a kick out of Daniel at the coffee shop and Cash with his constant flirting. This is a place and people I would like to visit. Looking forward to Ash and Sawyer’s story, and hopefully updates on Sky and Brooks.

I received a copy of the book from the author and this is my voluntary review.

Brooks and Skylar couldn't be more different. Skylar's family is rich and he's a trust fund baby. Brooks works as a bar manager, scraping every penny to keep his only relative, his grandmother, in an expensive, private nursing home/rehab. They have a 'meet angry' when Skylar's father asks him to check on the bar he owns in Swallow Cove. But when Skylar gets stalked by a nasty ex, Brooks steps in as a fake boyfriend. Turns out they're a lot more alike than they thought.
There's definitely a lot of family in this story, real and found. And once you get past the city boy/country boy, protector, first time/gay for you tropes, there's a sweet story of a charming town in the Ozarks. And how the town and it's residents help Skylar heal and Brooks how to trust. Brook is sex on two legs, wanted by both men and women. Skylar is pretty, likes lingerie, and is determined to regain himself after his ex's abuse.
The two are sizzling hot together. Lots of steam and smexy times. Brooks' circle of friends are supportive and make great secondaries. Can't wait for their books.
A really fun, quick read. DJ Jamison always adds a bit of humor in her books. A teeny bit of angst. Mix them together and get fantastic contemporary stories.

Received this ARC of Pretty Buoy and it was such a sweet and fun book! Skylar runs to Swallow Cove to escape an ex boyfriend who is refusing the ex part of his exit. Sky is hiding from the world and when his dad asks him to check in on a pub owned by them, meeting the bar manager is a surprise. Brooks is grumpy and immediately regrets scaring the pretty boy out of his bar, especially when he sees he scared him. Sky is trying to heal from a toxic relationship and working on finding himself again but when Brooks pretends to be his boyfriend to save him from his ex, something changes.

Reasons I Recommend:

1) Love Sky’s journey of self discovery and learning to love himself, trust himself, and be himself

2) Brooks only wants to help and hide his secret, but there’s something about Sky he can’t stop thinking about especially after one kiss changes everything and

3) Swallow Cove sounds like the best little town and watching Sky fall for it and the grumpy bartender, made it all the more sweeter!

Pretty Buoy by DJ Jamison is the second in a series based in Swallow Cove on a lake in the Ozarks. All the local businesses have names that are puns or otherwise have playful/sexy double meanings. Seriously, don’t try reading and drinking anything at the same time since you’re likely to choke while laughing!

Book one, Dock Tease, features Hudson, a relative newcomer to Swallow Cove, and Fisher, who grew up there. It’s a sweet and spicy age-gap, romance with Hudson resisting until he can’t and Fisher unsure he can believe in himself enough to trust that their relationship could be for real.

Book two happens in the same time frame, but focuses on Brooks, a hometown boy grown up and running a local bar and grill owned by Skylar’s dad, who sent Skylar to check up on the family investments in town. Brooks thinks he’s straight and Skylar just escaped a toxic relationship, but they prove to be perfect for each other while each healing themselves.

The way the books weave the stories together so that you can read them in either order and each stands alone is a lot of fun. Hopefully, all the other friends (Sawyer, Ash, Declan, Cash, and Poppy) will get their own books, too. Swallow Cove is a great place to visit again and again.

Loved It!

I am just loving this series and Brooks and Skylar were fabulous! Skylar is coming out of a toxic relationship and struggling to trust in himself and others. Brooks is just amazing with Skylar. This is such a sweet slow burn as they become friends, build trust with each other, and then move forward to more. Brooks is the dream boyfriend, just so amazing to Skylar and I love how he treats him with so much respect, love, and kindness. His acceptance and attraction to Skylar was so beautiful to watch. He has never been with a man before, but that did not stop him one bit from falling head over heels and he never once held back with his feelings. And when the clothes came off things really heated up but were also so incredibly intimate and tender too!
There is also the fantastic cast of characters that make up this lovely, small town. Fisher and Hudson are back, along with all their friends, and Brook's grandma, who I adored! This book overlaps with the timeline from book 1 and was so great to see some of the things from a different perspective, including the battle for developing real estate in Swallow Cove! I am so excited for what's to come with this town and the wonderful people who live there!
