An abandoned son determined to change his fate. An overlooked barkeep aching to flee her obligations. And a cosmic force that will forever entwine their destinies.

Emelle St. King is the nameless tavern barkeep featured briefly in all the grand adventure stories. She pours their ale, cleans their rooms, and blends into obscurity where she's never mentioned again. She's used to it. She's used to being forgotten. To being nameless. She's resolved to be the side character in everyone else's stories.

And unfortunately, she's also used to the soul-deep yearning for an adventure of her own. One like all the greats have had. She's used to the question that plagues her. Burns in her chest as she pours yet another ale for yet another Hero who will be on his way come morning, never to think of Emelle or her tavern again.

When will it be her turn?

Lars Winteris the bastard son of King Winthorpe, ruler of the Kingdom of Wellsmore. With violence against its citizens on the rise, Lars decides change is on the horizon. Knowing he can only ascend the throne as a Hero, Lars resolves to enter into a celestial trial, any celestial trial. He will force the Fates to grant him Hero status. He will dethrone his father and save his crumbling kingdom.

Lars knows this will be near impossible; only royals are given a destiny by the Fates. Only royals are granted Hero status upon fulfilling their prophecies. He doesn't care. He'll start by visiting the distant village in the rural lands of Mistwood, where newly minted Heroes frequently pass through, sharing their perilous exploits and grandiose tales. He will find the information he seeks, find the trials he must complete, no matter the cost.

He will weave his own destiny.

When will they learn only the Fates control destiny?

Total rating: 4.0 stars. This was a great debut novel so I’m definitely taking that into account in my star rating because it’s very impressive to me! Katherine’s writing is so descriptive and so engaging that it kept me very roped in. This was very cozy and I didn’t even really know and understand what that meant when I started it. I don’t think cozy romantasy will become my new favorite genre or anything because I am used to a lot of action but after the intro and cozy beginning, this book really picked up and the adventure added some more action that I really liked.

I liked that romance, however I will say my least fav part of this was the spice, it wasn’t my favorite and I think the story could have stood without it! I didn’t think there was way too much of it by any means though so it didn’t bother me. I really liked the concept of the side character becoming the main character, so this was a fun one!

I was in between a 3.5 and 4. I am rating it a 4 as a new author/debut novel! 👏🏼

I received this as an ARC. Thank you to the author for trusting me in reading her first debut novel! And also thanks for the book and the other goodies! ✨

I really enjoyed the story! The characters were very likeable!

Emelle, the side character in everyone else’s story is eager to find happiness by going on her own adventure and finding love. But she is stuck working as a barkeep at her family’s tavern.
One day, Lars comes in and she feels a connection the moment she sees him. But just like every “hero” that goes to the tavern thru passing, she doesn’t think anything of it. Until Lars spends a few days and stars a friendship with Emelle.
Lars tells her he’s looking for a friend and she decides to help him out so they go on a mini adventure.

This romantasy book was very cute. It was fast paced!

I actually think this could’ve been a longer book, in my opinion. And I rarely wish books were longer! lol.

The magic system and the whole thing with the King (Lars dad) felt like it needed a bit more explanation. And wish there was of Lars mom backstory. (I would’ve loved more of that).

There were lots of LOL moments, sad moments, shocking moments and a few spicy scenes!
I really liked that she gave us a trigger warnings in advanced!

Thank you Katherine Carter for the gifted arc in exchange for an honest review.

Ummm not me with literal tears in my eyes writing this review ✋ this is the most beautifully written debut novel I’ve read! Such a cozy little fantasy novel ❤️

This book is perfect when you need a little palate cleanser between heavier reads! Carter has built the most enchanting world that is still easily digestible. Sometimes I just neeeeed a fantasy that doesn’t have super intense world building, but still delivers an emotional punch. This is it 🤭

Our fmc, Emelle, is an observant barkeep at a rundown tavern. She has lived her life as the side character in everyone else’s stories, while dreaming of a life full of adventure. It’s finally her time to be the main character 😌 I adored emelle!! She has the perfect personality mixture of sass, determination, and brightness 🫶 learning her backstory was absolutely heartbreaking bc she deserves everything (even if she doesn’t think so)!

"I think I am destined to live with eternal heartbreak. To die alone, with only my memories to hold me as I drift into the cosmos."

Let’s talk about my man, Lars 🤭 Our mmc Lars is the bastard son of a corrupt king, who is desperate to save his kingdom. He embarks on an adventure to achieve Hero status from the Fates in order to make his kingdom a better place. Y’all, I loveeeee a broody shadow daddy!! Literally the best kind of mmc ✋ he will stop at nothing to do what is right and save his loved ones. Alsoooo, the spicy chapters I just-😮‍💨

“And Fates, if anything happened to her, he'd rip the Cosmic Fates apart.”

I absolutely loved the journey lars and emelle had together. They found peace with each other and themselves, while still managing to be bad ass heroes! Fated mates is one of my fav tropes so I may be biased, but the romance?? Chefs kiss 😘 their relationship is truly so beautiful!

"You consume me. Body, mind, and soul, you hold every jagged piece of me in the palms of your hands. You are all that I see, all that I hear, all that I know. I would happily suffer a thousand deaths if it meant I had the chance to spend even a single day with you. Do you understand me? I am yours."

Okay last thing, the plot! I loved the pacing in this book! Carter managed to create the perfect journey packed with love, adventure, plot twists, heartbreak, and a HEA in about 300 pages. Idk how Carter did it, but I am impressed 👏

I couldn’t get enough of this book! I truly hope to see more of these characters or more of the world that Katherine Carter painted. This fantasy novel had so many real life elements that it was very easy to relate to the main characters. I identified so much with the FMC Emelle. And Lars…. SWOON. He controls shadows and is the picture of ‘touch her and die’. I fell in love with their dynamic and relationship that built throughout the book during their adventures. I can’t wait to see what else Katherine Carter writes!

First and foremost I’d love to take this time to thank Ms. Katherine herself for my first ever physical ARC! :) and thank you for allowing me to read The Fool’s Errand before the world has a chance to read it.

I’ll skip the summary and get straight to the review of The Fool’s Errand.

Overall I’m giving the Fool’s Errand 3.5 ⭐️

Writing: 5
Story: 3
Spice: 3

Would I recommend The Fool’s Errand? Sure :)

Who is this appropriate for? New Adults and Adults (18+)

Would I read the sequel? To read more about Emmy & Lars’ adventure, yes :)

+ The writing for a debut is absolutely beautiful. I loved that Katherine was able to provide her readers with wonderful details without adding an obscene amount of fluff.
+ Both Emmy and Lars are super loveable characters and I loved how easy their relationship was.
+ Additionally, the world building and the magic is really easy to follow. At first I was a little confused by the plot, but when I got to the end I put two-and-two together.
+ The plot twist was 🤌🏼 *chef’s kiss.
+ It’s a stand alone fantasy-ish story.

- I don’t believe that steamy scenes were organic (as someone else mentioned before). Although I do love me a good nasty-naughty spicy scene, I don’t believe that this book called for it. I’ll admit, it was hot and it had me fanning myself so hard, but again, I don’t feel it was absolutely necessary.
- I was a little frustrated that I truly didn’t understand the plot of the story until the very end of the book (like literally the last 50 pages). Because of this, it was a little difficult for me to get into the book. However, when the light flickered on for me the gasp I gusped had my husband turning in his seat so fast I had to explain everything and we were both shooooooooook.

In conclusion, I believe that we can expect lots and lots of beautiful stories from Ms. Katherine and I cannot wait to read more! Thank you again for the opportunity! And congratulations on your debut! 🫶🏼

3 1/2 stars! “Details are what make life so vivid. They are the distinction between emotions, the difference between a breath taken and a breath stolen. Do you look at a painting and dismiss the shadows creating contrast? Without details, everything would be so incredibly boring.”

It was a cute story. Lars is searching for an active quest from the Cosmic Fates when he runs across Emelle in her tavern. It’s love at first sight. Emelle is sick of the hum-drum of life of a barmaid. She longs for more- to actually be seen- in addition to missing her best friend. In an interesting turn of events, Emelle finds herself helping Lars, and eventually setting off on a new adventure.

The world building is interesting with Hero’s, trials, and god-like figures called the Cosmic Fates, and Celestials. Tropes include fated mates, insta-love, sunshine/grumpy, and one bed.

Now I’m going to get into the nitty gritty of why it’s only 3 1/2 stars. Dear author: stop here. Reviews are for readers and I value your mental health.

I almost dnf’d this book. The pacing was all over the place. About 2/3’s of the way in I couldn’t put it down, but it was an absolute struggle to get to that point. The part where they are searching in a ledger was obviously meant for character development, but it seemed to drag for me. The spice felt like it was thrown in early to prove it’s a romance and was not very organic - plus the first scene was kinky and made me want to gag. I’m all for spice but what Lars did was an ick for me.

The author could definitely use a thesaurus. Surely Lars could think of another word other than enchantress.

BUT- like I said, the last part of the book was *chef’s kiss*. The story became so intricate, borrowing from small details in the first half of the story. The inner turmoil from both characters was devastating and wonderful.

So, 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it! But I probably won’t pick it up again. I wish all the best to the sweet author in her release of this debut novel- I really hope I’m the only sour patch kid. Thanks to the author for the eARC.

honestly I’m still blown away on how this is Katherine’s debut novel. Her writing is so captivating, that this is actually the first adult fantasy book that I pick up and finish since Iron Flame (iykyk). I love how we get a story for what is considered a background character in a fairytale. Emelle, who is the forgotten tavern barkeep that might come up in the hero’s stories, is constantly having to hear about others adventures and their destinies, and she wonders when is it her turn? I LOVE THAT. I found myself relating so heavily to the FMC. Watching and hearing others get everything they’ve ever wanted, of course, you feel happy for them but you ask yourself when is it my turn? Then we have my new book boyfriend, Lars, the kings bastard. Who is fully aware that the fates (because yes, this book has fates, WHO DOESNT LOVE THAT?) only give trials to fulfill their destinies to royals… which Lars is not. But Lars being the headstrong loml, he decides to make his own destiny. Hmm, sounds like me 🤭. I’ve gushed about this book in my TikTok, honestly I fell in love with Katherine’s writing, the chemistry between the two characters, the magic system, the spice 🥵, the banter.. I could go on, but what more could you ask for? ALSO. Because my only other personality besides being a reader, is being a swiftie, this book gives The Prophecy.

I hope I’ve convinced you to read this 🤭

4.5 ⭐️ .

It was a good read! I really related to the characters at times. This book has me giggling like a fool, crying, and laughing. I highly recommend checking this book out!!

Emmy, our FMC, was so cool! She was smart af and not just a typical damsel in distress. I loved her attitude and the kind of person she was. She really showed fate. She was brave to go out and discover new things apart from what she knew from her small town.

Lars, our MMC, was just 🤭. He had control of shadows, OMG yes! He was the definition of touch her and die! I love that he did not try to push down his feelings. He understood right away how he felt about Emmy and did not try to deny them.

I loved the adventure our MCs went through and how they were able to both help each other.

3.5⭐️ rounded up!

I want to start by thanking Katherine for sending me a stunning PR box in exchange for my honest review!

I love a cozy fantasy and I love the curvy/mid-size FMC rep so much! The quest based plot was fun to read. I’m not a huge fan of insta-lust but if you enjoy that then definitely pick this one up. This story also gives you fated mates, shadow daddy powers, dual POV, and a forced one bed/one room trope (which I thought was hilarious).

The pacing was a little off - I felt like the first half of the book dragged leading up to the FMC & MMC setting off on their adventure together. But once they got going, things really moved along and kept me engaged.

I think this is an AWESOME debut book and I will definitely be keeping Katherine on my radar!

You would never guess this is Katherin Carter's debut novel! It is so well written and written like a seasoned author. I absolutely adored this book! It's a unique and original take on so many tropes that the romantasy world is getting tired of. Everything seemed so intentional and the details were just enough without overcomplicating things.
Our characters Lars and Emelle are both relatable and loveable. The adventure they take us on is one for the ages. Trying to change their course with the fates and write their own story is breathtaking and beautiful.
The spice level in this book is perfect. It's not over done and it feels like it's in all the right spots. I wasn't skimming over these spice scenes! These were hot.
All in all, I loved this. I think this should be on everyone's list this year.

Please allow me to be the first 1 star review on this. I hate to hate on any book because it takes a lot of work to be a writer, but this book is pointless. Nothing really happens, nothing really matters, and so much of it is spent yadda yaddaing over plot that even I was wondering why it was written. Like what ground breaking or interesting idea NEEDED to be revealed in this published book? What was accomplished? The most that happens occurs in the last 20% and it's so drawn out I started skimming just to get through it. It became so repetitive we got chapters going over the same situation just from someone else's pov. And Lars, you know, the villainous guy that is supposed to be the one on the important adventure? Basically useless in this story. His POV's are a joke (to the point that any time he got a chapter, the few there are, I would sit and wonder what was even accomplished from his perspective). He just worships Emelee. That's it. AND he doesn't even get any important kills. No show down with his dad, no big fight scenes, nothing. It's Emelee's show. I think the only important thing Lars does is kill one of the monsters to start his quest early in the book.
The rest of my thoughts on this book are below. Ultimately, it was just kind of a nothingburger. I'll forget I've read it in a month because it just ultimately didn't accomplish anything.

Thoughts as I read:

-way, WAY too much internal processing and flowery language so far. Like I've been sitting in this tavern with nothing happening for so long now omg. And just the two main characters snarking about how much this town sucks."
17.0% - Lars isn't coming across as tough. So scary he makes men wet themselves by lifting an eyebrow? Yeah, OK. This is so goofy and this dude is written so poorly oh no!
-his insta love is weird and I'm not into it. Like what about her? He keeps listing traits we nor he has seen. She's smart? Where? I'm not harping on the lady but we ain't had none of that so far!
30.0% -wait, he asked her a benign question and she *completely* forgot to follow up about the trial his "friend" went on?
-omg this book should've just been about everything that happened before Lars got there because that's all we're reading about right now anyway. Is there a plot beyond this boring ass town?
30.0% -rando drunk guy butt's into a conversation completely out of nowhere to show how protective Lars is (and ultimately showing how full of shit he is. I thought you would dissolve the world Lars! I thought you were an evil man, Lars! Being bad ass only works if you follow through!)
-this destiny thing is so vague, I keep waiting for more information but it's just Lars and Emelee bitching and judging the people on ACTUAL adventures.
32.0% -I'm not even sure what these two are laughing at. The stuff they're saying isn't funny.
-Lars' chapters at this point are entirely pointless. They boil down to ogling her in wonder, thinking about leaving, then being astounded by her... intelligence? Beauty? Who knows. And more worship. I don't even know what his mission is.
-This book has had nothing happen except "yadda yadda their here now. Yadda yadda they had a conversation. Yadda yadda they travelled." To the point where I'm not sure they even rode their horses, that's how little detail is in their travel or activity.
-
-"he shuffled into his secret room" excuse me, what?
-Too dumb to realize they were being drugged, then Emelee panics so hard she makes herself pass out. Truly a heroine worth following! (update SHE DOES IT TWICE!)
-88% holy shit this book won't END. This climax is going on so long because we just keep flipping back and forth between the protagonists waxing poetic about how unfair it is they didn't get more time together. I'm skimming at this point because it's the same stuff over and over.
-Yeah let's bypass how excruciatingly painful it is to slice your own throat. But the beauty's in the details right?

Lord almighty Bingo time:
-He's a monster! but not really: Yeah, what a joke. Bro doesn't have a mean bone in his body but he's a "villain" guys! No I promise he's a bad guy, no for realsies look how black his hair is!
-She's "average" but every man wants her
-Male lead is rich AF
-The female lead is "tough" but actually a wimp
-People pleasing nice girl (who's randomly tough)
-Conflict? Hardly an inconvenience: this one might turn around but I doubt it (Update: Nope)
-obvious worship kink masked as "healthy concern"
-Goofy threats: oh. My. God. SO MANY.
-"But how can I be a good person if I'm not self-sacrificing constantly??"
-Simping
-Baths

4/5 Stars!!!

If you're looking for a cozy, standalone romantasy book, this one is absolutely, definitely for you! Every time I had to put this book down, I would think about the next time I would get to pick it back up! The majority of time that I was reading this book I was at work, but I felt like I was sitting in a cozy chair in front of a fireplace! It gave me such a warm/fuzzy feeling in my chest!!

Tropes:
- fated mates
- strangers to lovers
- one bed
- destiny
- mutual pining
- sunshine x grumpy

I really enjoyed reading this book. The adventure, the magic, the trials, the riddle, everything about this book was so much fun! I felt as if I was going on the adventure with Emelle and Lars! I loved getting to visit the different towns and cities in the story! I was totally not expecting the twists at the ending either, which made me love this book even more! (SPOILERS START HERE) The fact that Greer (love that name by the way, reminds me of Reign), was the woman that Lars saved in the beginning of the book and how he helped Elix as well was FANTASTIC writing. I didn't put two and two together or even guess that so when it was revealed I was like OMG. And then Emelle turning into the Celestial and having to face Lars! Incredible! I was on the edge of my seat!!!

Some of my favorite scenes from the book are as follows:
- when Lars buys a handkerchief the same color as Emelle's eyes (like come on!!!)
- when Lars receives a letter from his father to his nine year old self at the end of the book (the waterworks were so real in that moment)
- when Emelle takes matters into her own hands twice at the end (she is an absolutely badass FMC)

There were two reasons (one minor and one major) that I took off a star for my rating:
- Major reason: I feel like it took a long time to really get the adventure going, and I would have liked to spend less time in Silvermist and more time on the road!
- Minor reason: I felt like Lars calling Emelle his "enchantress" was a bit overused in the beginning + the almost insta-love between the two characters! But it was still cute!

Spice Level: Very Spicy!! This is 18+ for sure!! (Very well written tho ;))

(I read an advanced copy of this book for author Katherine Carter in exchange for an honest review! Thank you Katherine!!)

Ok so this book may have taken a few chapters for me to really get into- I’d say even the first 100 pages. I just was trying to connect everything. But OMG man once my mind got everything straight (this is a me thing with all fantasy books) this book was so cute!
Even tho Emelle is the female main character in this book, all her life she had seen herself as a side character in many a hero’s quests as she fills beer steins behind the bar of her tavern. Listening as heroes tell their tales of slaying monsters and finding their soulmate, fulfilling their destiny. But what about Emelle’s fairytale ending?! Where is her hero to slay a monster for her love?!
Lars, bastard son of the king doesn’t have a destiny. Thrown to the streets at a young age he learns to survive the dangerous streets of his father’s kingdom deciding that he will become a hero anyway and make his own destiny. Now as a man, on his way to create his own destiny, his path crosses Emelle’s and as fates have it they both instantly fall for each other not realizing they are fated mates.
He uses Emelle and her stories of victorious heroes to help guide him on his quest but that isn’t enough for Emelle. Even though she doesn’t fully realize who he is to her yet, she leaves her tavern and her life behind and sets off on her own adventure for true love, for Lars.
This book tells a story of letting go of feeling foolish and taking a chance on your self, on love, on being the hero. It may lead to the happiest of endings.
“Fuck destiny, weave your own future”

I really enjoyed this book and this spin on fairytales!
I love that it’s a single novel and not a series because sometimes we all just need a good book to read and not be committed to a full series.
If you love fairytales, heroes, mates and a happily ever after, you should definitely read this one.

The Fool's Errand is a fun, spicy fantasy with a twist on fairytales. Heroes get the quests, get the girls and get the kingdoms. Everyone else is a sideline and just struggling to get by.

In Carter's story however, we see a twist when a sideline character, Emelle, and her daring stranger, Lars, decide to take Fate into their own hands and search for a quest on their own. Emelle is a simple tavern owner, soaking in the stories of the travelers who come through and dreaming about her own adventure. Lars is a broody, self-made "wraith" from a nearby kingdom who is unwilling to accept his lot in life.

Both the main character's were well developed and relatable. I loved that Emelle was a bit older compared to other romantasies I've read. She had lived enough life to know what she wanted and had a good understanding of herself. Lars was also more experienced and had learned street smarts as well as a good understanding of the struggles the people in his kingdom are facing. It was refreshing to have more mature main characters! The spice was super fun! It was much more detailed and depraved than I anticipated, which I enjoyed. Once the plot twists started coming out, the story was fast and gave several "mouth drop open moments". The ending was well done and satisfying as well!

I struggled to get connected in the beginning of the story. The pace was much slower and it took a good amount of time before the action started. Enjoyable...but I kept waiting for the meat of the story to emerge! I also struggled with the fantasy/magic world building in the beginning. Though it becomes very clear by the end, I struggled to get the "fantasy" feel in the beginning of the book. My recommendation is to read this book if you enjoy fantasy with heavy romance BUT DO NOT GIVE UP on the book. If you push through the beginning, the climax and ending are well worth it!

I look forward to seeing more releases by this author. I also enjoyed the standalone aspect of this book. While I enjoy a good series, I also enjoy something I can read and feel a sense of completion by the final page - Carter definitely provided that!

✨“Be so incredibly foolish. It may just work out in your favor.” ✨

I absolutely love and adore this book! It was a cozy and nice change of pace from the high fantasy books that I often read. It had the perfect balance of plot, romance & spice, world building, and twists & turns. I love the idea of whether or not our fates are predestined, and if we have the power to shape our future the way we dream it to be.

Emelle is usually the side character in everyone else’s stories. But this time it’s HER turn for an adventure. While I do love an Aelin type of FMC, Emelle is more of an Elide. Her strengths are her compassion for others, intelligence and wit. She’s charming and very relatable. Plus, she has a cute little fur baby! 🐱

Lars, our MMC, is smitten and obsessed from the beginning with our girl. And we love a man that would crawl to the ends of the earth for his mate. Alexa, play “Work Song” by Hozier!🎶 An extra bonus: shadow daddy!

Emelle and Lars were amazing together. I loved them from the very start. Their story is full of passions and trials. Their tension and chemistry also left me giggling and blushing!

Also, the spice was SPICING 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book is a super quick read! I was able to finish it one sitting.

If you like:
- Dual POV
- Cozy fantasy adventure
- Stand-alone
- Spicy romantasy
- Strangers to lovers
- Destiny and fate
- Mutual pining
- “Where is my mate?”
- If “invisible string” by Taylor Swift was a book
then you will love this one!

Before I start my official review, I would like to thank the amazing author, Katherine Carter. Thank you so much for creating such a beautiful story and allowing me to experience it as an arc reader.

I loved this book from the first page until the last page. It was such a pleasure to see a debut novel so well written and put together. It is a spicy romantasy that will keep you on your toes. Just when you think you got it all figured out Katherine hits you with a twist that has you screaming "WHAT?" in the school pick up line!

The Fool's Errand follows our fmc, Emelle, a curvy and intelligent barkeep in a rundown bar and inn. She fills Heros ales and listens to the stories of those who fight trials day in and day out, all while feel trapped in her small world. That is until a stunning shadow daddy comes in and turns her world upside down. Their story is full of immense passion and trials that keep you wanting more and actually receiving it.

It was very refreshing to see a fmc who is so realistic and does not fit in to all the social norms that women in today's society face. She is normal yet beautiful, curvy, and so relatable.

One of my favorite books of the year! It had the right amount of world building, plot, spicy scenes, and twist and turns. Try to guess the riddle before the story tells you.

Firstly, thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book to read. 💖

With that that I absolutely loved this book so much that I immediately ran to Amazon to purchase a physical copy.

If you’re looking for a fantasy that plays in all of the classic tropes (and done well) then this is it. I had an insanely good time reading this book between the romance and the plot, which I feel is very well balanced.

Emelle and Lars were absolutely amazing together. I loved their tension, banter, and chemistry so freaking much. I was swooning, giggling and kicking my feet, AND blushing!

Exhibit A - “You wanted me to thank you, yes? For saving my life?” A shallow nod as she bit her bruised bottom lip. Eyes hooded, Emelle was the picture of carnal lust. Lars’s 🍆 strained against his trousers, begging to be released. The heat in the room continued to rise as he smirked. “It’s too bad this is your punishment, then.” 🥵
Exhibit B- “You consume me,” he beseeched her. “Body, mind, and soul, you hold every jagged piece of me in the palms of your hands. You are all that I see, all that I hear, all that I know. I would happily suffer a thousand deaths if it meant I had the chance to spend even a single day with you. Do you understand me? I am yours.” 🥺
Exhibit C - “If I listened to every gut feeling I had,” Lars mused, “that first night I saw you would’ve ended much differently.”

I loved this book and it was this author's debut novel! This is a spicy but cozy romantasy book that follows our female lead Emelle, a curvy, observant bar keep in a dingy inn. She has big dreams but feels like she can never act on them due to her own obligations to her family. Well, one day this mysterious, cutie that WIELDS SHADOWS, creeps around her inn and she's curious. Why is she so drawn to him? What do those shadow hands do? Turns out Lars notices her too. They become friends with a burning desire for more while. When he suddenly leaves without a word off on his celestial quest, Emelle decides that she's had enough of putting her dreams and desires on hold and chases after him into a world of adventure, love, and magic.

I've never related to a female main character before. She was wonderful and I loved Lars too. It had the perfect about of plot, romance, and fantasy elements. The things Lars says and does are so romantic and beautiful, he's definitely getting a seat on the book boyfriend shelf. If you're looking for a spicy romantasy with twists, turns, and adventure this one is for you!

Owner and Barkeep of The Flushed Finn, Emelle sees hero after hero come through her tavern as they set forth and return from whatever trial the cosmic fates have assigned of them. Always royalty, and always finding their soulmate upon completion. She's heard every story possible in the last decade and desperately wants to escape her small town to go on a grand adventure of her own, but unfortunately that's just not what the fates have in mind for her. Lars, on the other hand, is on a mission to decide his own fate. Who's to say he can't find a trial for himself? Can the barkeep potentially help him chose a destiny of his own?

This book had two really fun main characters. You have the curvy, assertive barkeep who isn't afraid to stand up for herself and the mysterious shadow wielder who is also not afraid to stay up for the barkeep. The chemistry between the two of them was amazing and made the spicy scenes that much better. Reading this book felt like a warm blanket; cozy, and relaxing. This was a very easy read and paced well. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a spicy but cozy fantasy.

This was my first “cozy romantasy” and it was definitely a win! It’s a dual pov standalone with spice and the whole journey that I went on while reading this was just so fun. I love a series just as much as the next person, but it was nice to have the story wrapped up in the course of one book. Katherine’s writing has a way of just drawing you in and wanting more! I will say it took me until about the 30% to be fully invested but then I was all in! I’m normally more of a fan of enemies to lovers vs strangers to lovers and not usually the biggest insta love fan, but I was 100% rooting for this couple! I absolutely love how the MMC couldn’t get enough of her. This book has all of my favorite tropes and the way that we got to the “one bed” trope was my absolute favorite 😍 I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for a cozy romantasy read with lots of adventure.

The Fool’s Errand was my introduction to a comfort Romantasy book and I absolutely loved it. The writing was easy to understand; there was enough description that I could picture everything perfectly but I wasn’t bored or confused. The character development was well done which allowed be to get invested in the characters quickly and stay interested.

This gave me Hercules vibes. There are celestials and the cosmos and heroes with trials and then there’s the Fates. And just like Hercules, don’t expect a damsel in destress.

The spicy was spicy and the slow burn made it better. But what was very refreshing was the lack of angst, though I normally love some angst and drama… here the characters communicated and they listened and they just clicked.

I highly recommend this book. It’s a quick and easy read, but still has all those tropes we love: shadow daddy, fated mates, slow burn, touch her a d**…

I absolutely loved this story so much so that I binged it while the power was out due to horrible weather conditions. It’s such a cozy read, I felt like I was on the adventure with Emelle and Lars.

The fates have something in store for this nameless tavern barkeep and the stranger that drifted in one night.

Grab a snack and a warm cup of tea and take a quest that only the fates know what’s in store.

Are you one to tempt fate or walk the path chosen for you?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
🌶️🌶️

This book had a little bit of everything I love in a fantasy novel. Fairytale vibes, spice 🌶️, fated mates, and full of adventure.

Emelle lives in her small hometown and is in charge of her family’s tavern. She feels stuck going through the motions of daily life and longs for more. Her town is filled with “hero’s”, princes that are on their hero journey, that are passing through telling their tales of slaying beasts and saving princesses. Lars unexpectedly comes into Emelles tavern which sparks a friendship between the two.

4.5/5⭐️

The magical realism in this book was enchanting. I have never read a book like this before, it was so wonderfully refreshing. I loved Emelle and Lars and how there was no stupid third act break up.

The plot of the book is SO GOOD! The idea of fates and cosmos and celestial beings gave me slight zodiac academy vibes. But the book also felt like it took place in a time with medieval wizards.

I love a good HEA, and the bit climax at the end made me think we almost weren’t going to get one. Thank the fates we did!

Thank you so much Katherine for the opportunity to read the ARC! I enjoyed this story a lot! It had enough spice, and the plot was very interesting! Emelle and Lar’s chemistry was great, and the spice was a 3/5 heat wise. I will say as much as I do love a good spicy scene, I thought it wasn’t necessary between the characters. It still made for a good sprinkle of steak in the book. The banter between Emelle and Lar’s was great, and once I wrapped my head around the end of the book, I was shook! 3.5 ⭐️ from me!

⭐⭐⭐.5 Enjoyed, would recommend

This is a spicy romantasy with a slow start and a slow-burn romance. Emelle, an older and self-assured tavern worker, meets Lars, the street-smart illegitimate son of the king. The characters are well-developed and mature, which is very refreshing.

The detailed, unexpected spice adds to the fun. The plot picks up with jaw-dropping twists, leading to a great ending. Despite a slow beginning, the book picks up about 60% in and the ending makes it worth reading for fantasy romance fans.
