Less is Enough: On Architecture and Asceticism

"Less is more" goes the modernist dictum. But is it? In an age when we are endlessly urged to do "more with less", can we still romanticise the pretensions of minimalism? For Pier Vittorio Aureli, the return of "austerity chic" is a perversion of what ought to be a meaningful way of life. Charting the rise of asceticism in early Christianity and its institutionalisation with the medieval monasteries, Aureli examines how the basic unit of the reclusive life - the monk's cell - becomes the foundation of private property. And from there, he argues, it all starts to go wrong. By late capitalism, asceticism has been utterly aestheticised. It manifests itself as monasteries inspired by Calvin Klein stores, in the monkish lifestyle of Steve Jobs and Apple's aura of restraint. Amid all the hypocrisy, it must still be possible to reprise the idea of "less" as a radical alternative, as the first step to living the life examined.

Pier Vittorio Aureli studied at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and later at the Berlage Institute in Rottedam. Aureli currently teaches at the AA School of Architecture in London and is visiting professor at Yale University. He is the author of many essays and several books, including The Project of Autonomy (2008) and The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture (2011).

Lemis Yayınları’ndan çıkan Az Yeterlidir ilk bakışta sanki mimarlık içi bir tartışma gibi dursa da, aslında 21. yüzyılda yaşam nasıl yaşanabilir üzerine çok sıkı ama sade ve zevkli bir okuma.

“Az çoktur”, artık defter kapaklarında bile gördüğümüz, carpe diem kadar sık rastladığımız bir motto oldu. İşte bununla hesaplaşan Aureli, az azdır, diyor, romantize etmeye gerek yok. Rejimler ekonomik krizlerin ve kemer sıkma politikalarının insanları sokağa çıkarmasına değil de evlerinde yemek pişirmeye ve tekrar sökük çorapları dikmelerine sebep olmasını tercih ediyorlar. Ama aynı rejimler aynı insanların bir yandan da gerektiğinde şahane bir tasarım obje vs. için kredi kartına taksit yaptırmayı unutmamalarını da istiyor. Bu çelişkiyi açıklayan Aureli, yoluna az yeterlidir diye devam ediyor. “Az” bu tüketim toplumunun dışına çıkabilme umudu için bir başlangıçtır ama ancak bir başlangıçtır. Yeni kurallarla yeni bir yaşam kurmak gerek.

Brecht’ten, Benjamin’e, Marks’dan Corbusier’e, Calvin Klein’dan keşişlere kadar çok farklı referanslarla ilerleyen kitap, insanın kendi hayatı üzerine kendi kural ve düşüncelerini oluşturmasına imkân veriyor. A short but vital read; an expose into the relationship between architecture, aesthetic minimalism, and consumerism. Less isn't less, nor is it more, it's just having enough; and for once, just being enough. I enjoyed learning about the development of asceticism in the Western tradition; who knew that the Catholic Church made the Franciscan order repent some of their initial thoughts on poverty and acquisition of property? I didn't. Valuable lessons.

Diseñar arquitectura para cubrir la rutina diaria del "yo", no solamente las necesidades como lo predicaba el Menos es más de Mies van der Rohe sino también las expectativas de vida y el ocio, fundamentales para vivir un vida con lo suficiente e impulsar la sociabilidad y el encuentro con el entorno. Lo que faltó fue cubrir al "usuario" creo yo, cómo llegar a entenderlo para diseñar y así convertirse en una forma total de luchar contra el status quo, un verdadero ascetismo, y no ser meramente un Steve Jobs, pero me pareció una lectura grata y ofrece ejemplos variados y un recorrido por la historia que me permite entender qué se espera por ascetismo.

Un contraste entre la obligación de la mayor productividad con la menor inversión y la realidad de minimizar todo que en verdad es eso, la reducción del deseo.

A través de distintos ejemplos nos plantea un panorama de la vida ascética y de su comodotización, más allá de un estilo de vida, un mismo objeto de consumo. Desde los monasterios hasta las boutiques, hay una fijación por la excelencia visual de la simplicidad y las dificultades morales que implica el usar menos, o bien no estar sujeto a una obligada inflación de una productividad banal condicionada a un consumo banal.

Great essays, recommended for recent graduates facing many questions about their place in the design world. Not only explains the origin of the term ‘less is ……’, but also raises questions about what 'less' is and how much less is meant by less.

Fantastic book. The author got me since page one with the idea of keep things simple, in architecture and in live. Have to say it is an old idea brought to the present, but it is nice to remember more is not always better.
