I absolutely loved this book, despite the fact that I am usually not an avid reader of self-development books. But Joe's book is very well written, easy and clear, and most importantly it’s very honest. It gives the feeling of a heart-to-heart conversation instead of an inspirational book. I really felt as if he were directly talking to me, pinpointing the issues one faces when trying to get out of the system. Definitely recommend it.

An invitation to rediscover our greatness

Too often we have been told that we couldn't do this or that. Too often our ambitions, passions and dreams have been crushed by people around us and by society as a whole. Joe's book "Escape The System" is a powerful invitation to rediscover the greatness within us, recreate our lives and transform our mindset to live the life we were truly meant to live.

For those who are really serious about following their passions and doing what they love, the author covers everything you need to know to create the belief system required to get where you want to be.

Changing our belief, getting out of our comfort zone and facing our fear is never an easy thing to do, but the author shows us the way in an inspiring fashion!

After reading "Escape The System" giving up on your dreams doesn't sound like an option anymore.

Your Roadmap Through The System

When I first discovered this book, I thought it was going to be a typical 'How to get rid of a job you hate' how to instruction manual. Instead, I was very surprised to find something much more deeper than the usual fare.

This book is about how to deprogram yourself from society's conditioning so that you can live life on your terms, follow your dreams and be a change agent in our world. The author goes to great lengths to explain how 'The System' can keep you from pursuing your dreams and what you can expect if you either submit to it or challenge it.

The System, in this case, is society's laws, customs, guidelines, rules, traditions, best practices, politics, etc. Its influence is vast, pervasive, insidious, covering all areas of society (human relations, governmental, religious & corporate institutions, popular culture, news and current opinion).

This System demands obedience, conformity and for its authority to go unchallenged. These values are forced fed to us the minute we are born until the moment of our death. It strongly encourages everyone to do the following:

*American Dream: (birth. attend grade school. college. marry. get a big mortgage. have kids. work 40 years. retire. die.). If you don't follow this path, you risk being labeled (fill in the name here).

*Church: Submit completely to: God/Jesus/Allah/Buddha/Zeus/Neo/Apollo and you will be allow in heaven. If not, your non-compliance ensures eternal damnation in the afterlife.

*School: be obedient. truth comes from authority. stay within the lines. memorize this. pass this test. go to the next level. Or we will label you, flunk you and cast you aside.

*Work: get a good job. be obedient. work long hours. multitask. keep your head down. retire decades later with a party and a gold watch. Do otherwise and The System and your peers will consider you a failure/weird/stupid.

In and of itself there is nothing wrong with following these institutions or their ideals. If that is what you truly desire. The author persuasively argues that we are constantly sold this prepackage lifestyle throughout our lives complete with mainstream values, norms, ideas and current opinions. *Spouses not included. This is a great book for those who don't fit in, misfits, original thinkers, dreamers, visionaries, superheroes, artists, designers and people who want to make the world a better place.

I once tried to improve my life through gamification. Well, I took lots of pills and was chased by ghosts. This book is full of carbon-dated cultural references to The Matrix and Fight Club. You take the red pill or the blue pill. I am Jack's token cultural reference. In the case of Fight Club it clearly references the film and reads like it was written by someone who never read the book. You keep using that token cultural reference, I do not think it means what you think it means. Once you get beyond that, there is something worth exploring. The basic self-help setup is obvious enough. There is a system. You need to escape it. But for all it's talk about escaping the system this book isn't really about that. It's about how to escape the shackles of the system whilst still operating within it. Be in the world but not of it. That sort of thing. Which is actually much more useful and thought-provoking. You can't really escape the system but you don't need to. You only need to realise that the system is irrelevant. "Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realise the truth... There is no spoon... Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself."

A fantastic book which cleverly separates the subtle differences between what one believes about themselves and the world around them - and how it affects our lives - and what actually is.

It underlines the double-bind of how the system works to keep us blinded to its control by occupying us with busywork, fear, and loss of the moment in pursuit of a never-reached future, and reminds us that 'The only limitations we face are the ones we believe and reinforce ourselves.'

Joe circles us back with relatable stories that resonate with our souls, and centers us on the path we truly belong, along with helpful tips and strategies to reframe how we view ourselves and our lives.

There truly is no limit when one can 'see' past the self-imposed barriers we cling to. I love this book. Two thumbs up. Way up!

A really interesting book, like nothing else I have read and I real eye opener. This clarified some of the thoughts that roll around in my head and made me realise there were others out there that were also not happy with everything inside the 'matrix'. Mostly, I was relieved that the book did state that you can work in the system but in your own way. You dont have to be a monk on a mountain top. I thought the book was a little too long and went in a couple of side tangents, with a few too many 'Fight Club' references but overall, a highly recommended book for anyone who thinks working for 40 years to retire is a strange concept (among other things).

I have read this book and met Joe a few times. This book follows a logical plan to help us see the world and our place in it in a different way. We can create our own reality rather than let society guide us and trap us.
It is an comfortable read but I found myself stopping and contemplating what I had just read and reflecting on how to change.
I recommend this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve been a self-help junkie for 30 years — I started with Tony Robbins, and honestly, most books now feel like they just repeat the same ideas. Escape the System is different. Joe Barnes pulls together wisdom from the great thinkers of both past and present, weaving their stories and insights into a concise, practical guide. Finally, a self-help book that pulls wisdom from the world’s great thinkers and makes it simple and actionable. It’s fresh, inspiring, and packed with strategies to master the mind. This book ticks all the boxes — motivating, clear, and actionable. Highly recommended for anyone ready to shift their mindset and put a concrete plan in place.

The author points out early in the book that it is meant for 20 year olds that aren’t sure their path in life but the book still has a great message for anyone that might get stuck in the daily routine and don’t feel like they are fulfilled in life.

Always push to get a little better each day in a way that brings you a happier life, whatever that means to you. Enjoy the wins in life and don’t dwell on the losses/failures too long. Don’t get too high or too low and take everything as a learning experience that is going to get you to where you want to be.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have read many self-development and spirituality books and I can say that this ranks high on my list of the best. Joe made it very easy to understand with modern examples and practical exercises that can be applied in your daily life to walk towards finding your passion while enjoying the process. :)

I just finished reading Joe Barnes’ book “Escape the system” in less than 24 hours. I was so engrossed by it that I literally gobbled up the pages and couldn’t put it down before finishing the last page! And I will definitely read it again!

Joe Barnes’ book provides invaluable gems of advice and insights for those of us experiencing deep dissatisfaction with their lives, dissatisfaction with the drudgery of working a boring and uninspiring 9 to 5 job using very little of our potential, and the despondency felt at having settled for a life of mediocrity, which leaves us frustrated and unhappy.

It is an essential reading for those of us who know, in our heart of hearts, that we are capable of accomplishing so much more with our lives and who still dream of living a much bolder life if only......

If only we had the courage to do so,
if only we had more determination and discipline,
if only we got rid of the excuses and limitations we typically call upon to justify our lack of achievement, such as the necessity of meeting our financial commitments (ie mortgage and bills), or because we use our perceived lack of talent or opportunities for not chasing our dreams and accepting jobs that we barely tolerate, or even hate.

The book resonated deeply with me because the author speaks to us readers with a very authentic voice coming from his own personal experience of the deeply disappointing years he spent studying for a degree in politics at the university of Manchester. He felt unhappy and stunted, both socially and academically, and thereafter subsequently also struggled to find his way in the “real world” of work and career, before finally finding his way.

“Escape the system” starts by defining the nature of the system (modern society and its expectations to conform in return for financial "security" and predictability) that suffocates us and robs us of our energy and vitality, and then illuminates the roadmap and personal attitude which are necessary to help us to escape, illustrating it with real life examples of individuals from all walks of life who have triumphed over huge difficulties and adversity to follow their individual paths to greatness.

I found chapters 8 and 9 , with the respective titles of “how to rise above your present environment” and “why controlling your life doesn’t work and what you need to instead”, to be particularly useful and enlightening.

In these two chapters, the author responds to a main human concern or more specifically to the habitual excuses we hear from people who cite their daily life environment as the main culprit preventing them from attaining their dreams. He shows us how by effectively reframing the way we perceive our current life circumstances, no matter how bleak we believe they are, can provide us with the much-needed fuel and energy to propel ourselves towards our destiny.

He also puts forward very convincing explanations as to why trying to exert control over one’s life through micro-management and an obsessive focus on outcomes, is a futile endeavour and that we should just instead let go of the illusion of control, while at the same time striving to accomplish the necessary daily work towards attaining our life objectives. Paradoxically, the author shows that by freeing ourselves from out need to control our life, we give ourselves much better chances of fulfilling our dreams!

Thank you Joe Barnes for sharing with us your life experiences, the lessons you learnt along your journey, and for imparting us with the critical tools, the main ideas and the roadmap to escape the system and fulfill our human greatness.

As a fan of both Fight Club and The Matrix, I immediately connected with this book. It was fascinating reading a nonfiction account of how to break free from the chains imposed by modern society. I always related to the dilemma faced by the characters Neo and Jack from the films (above) and reading Joe Barnes' book took me back to the inspiration that I felt when meeting these game-changing characters got the first time.

The book has helped me to clarify the sacrifices that I am willing to make to achieve my own personal greatness. I recommend it to anyone who wants to make positive changes in their lives. It not only offers an understanding of the current dilemmas faced by those who are disillusioned by the system, but a way out of it too. I can't wait to see what else Joe Barnes has to offer us.

Excellent narration from the author enhanced this self help book. You may think another self help book initially and it is, however I found some really interesting scenarios for me to think about and possibly take action on. The author is trained in psychology and has tested his theories and he gives just enough information to ponder on rather than overload you. The subject matter can be daunting as you relate to your own behaviours & habits but I think this book manages to deliver inspiring strategies to escape the system. I have bookmarked some sections to go back to. Thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook.
