If you enjoy feel-good stories like The Beach House or Just for One Summer, you'll love this escape to the enchanting world of Gull Island where city meets shore and hearts collide in a romance that will leave you breathless.
Sand, Sea, & Second Chances is a closed-door romance, perfect for anyone who loves lots of sizzle but no explicit content.
Catherine Michaels whisks you away to sun-drenched shores with her sweet, small-town romances. Get ready to laugh out loud, shed a tear (or two), and swoon over heartwarming characters you'll instantly connect with.
Before she started writing romance, Catherine got a graduate degree and completed post-graduate studies in educating exceptional children. After years in the classroom and later corporate boardrooms, this award-winning author published five children’s books under the name Cat Michaels. During Covid, when she yearned for happiLy-ever afters, she started imagining her Gull Island series of sweet, small-town romances.
Catherine and her family live outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, where she writes and visits her happy place on the coast every chance she gets.
I wanted to love this book so badly but I ended up just liking it okay instead. First you have Kate, she wants a fresh start after being laid off from her job, having her marriage end, and also having a miscarriage. Kate is complicated and doesn't have a place to fit in at the moment, keep this in mind because it is important for how the story ends. Then you have Luke, he is a guy who wants to keep his beloved hometown free from greedy development. Okay so one person doesn't have a place to belong and the other person loves their small town, now do you know where this is going?
Now if the ending were the only issue I would not be as harsh as I'm being but there were too many side plots in this book and too many characters that we just meet and don't go anywhere. I know this is the setup for the next book but there were just too many people that we just meet and then nothing happens.
The other problem I had was the pacing, this book was paced really weirdly. The book would be so slow and then you would get a time jump, then it would halt, and then another time jump. At no point did it feel like it was at a comfortable pace. I felt the book was both too long but too short because it covered years.
Last, I had a problem was that the conflict was non existent. Sure, in the preservation effort there is a mustache twirling villain that wants to destroy the island but it is so obvious he is going to lose that it doesn't feel real at all. Then there is a random side plot of some lady trying to get Kate fired but it gets resolved in two pages. Every conflict just gets immediately resolved, nothing felt earned.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a no conflict, low stakes book where you just go for vibes only.
This is such a sweet and heartwarming novel. I loved the characters and seeing how they healed from their pasts and grew together. I also enjoyed the side characters and their storylines.
The setting is gorgeous. It takes place in a beach town in North Carolina, and it captures that quirky, loveable vibe that I find irresistible.
After a painful divorce, and losing her job, thirty-something Kate Fiore is looking for a fresh start. The tranquility of Gull Island, North Carolina seems like the perfect place for Kate to rest. However, her arrival is far from tranquil. 🐢 Luke McAllister is not keen on his peaceful island being disturbed by an outsider, but circumstances force him and Kate to work together. As they work on fundraising and sea turtle patrols their personalities clash and tensions rise. Only that tension turns into chemistry and unexpected feelings. 🐢 Sand Sea & Second Chances is Catherine Michaels’ debut novel and the perfect summer read of a city girl meeting a small-town guy. If you’re looking for a beachy rom-com with all the feels, moonlight strolls, sea turtles, well-crafted characters, and all the steam with closed-door romance, then Sand Sea & Second Chances is the book for you.
I was immediately captivated by Catherine Michaels’s writing style. The vivid descriptions of Gull Island and its residents brought them to life in my mind and I was swept away by a beautiful second chance romance.
Gull Island is the perfect setting for healing and fresh starts and Kate is there to do both. Luke is intensely protective of his family and small town, but working with Kate allows for their slight enemies-to-love vibe to explore the sparks of attraction. This slow-burn romance is tender and sweet, while their work with a fundraiser and a sea turtle hatching project is invigorating. I would love to experience sea turtles hatching someday and felt like I got a good taste of it in this story.
The growth these characters experience is beautiful–Kate learning to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life and Luke learning to adapt to change. Michaels captures the nostalgia and uncomplicated ways of small town life, the complexities of meshing two different souls together, and the beauty of second chances. I was immersed in this story and enjoyed my time on Gull Island.
This is a cute romance, with lovable characters, deepfelt conversations, and adorable friendships. Overall just a really enjoyable read that i would recommend to all romance lovers!

Taking the first step toward a new beginning can be daunting, but Kate is determined to make her summer at Gull Island the first step toward a new life. The summer marketing position at the aquarium will give her time to process the dramatic changes she never planned for. She has left behind everything familiar to her for a chance to recover while surrounded by white sands and astonishingly vivid sunsets. Who could ask for anything more?
As Kate takes her first steps in accepting a past she can’t change with a stubborn conviction that things can one day be good again, she begins to meet the traditional islanders on Gull Island. One islander, Luke McAllister, views her presence on the island as another annoyance. The summer tourists invade the island every summer, threatening everything the islanders hold dear.
Clayton Pruitt has another plan for the island. He intends to build an entire community of condos at The Point. As Kate experiences the magic of the sea turtle runs, from egg nest to surf, she begins to understand the intricate web of life the islanders, led by Luke, are desperate to protect. Will she and Luke be able to find a way to stop Pruitt?
The author has approached her story with a sense of wonder and discovery. Using the two-person point of view, she enables us to intimately explore the strengths and weaknesses Luke and Kate experience as their relationship becomes more than that of co-workers.
If you love the feel of the warm sand beneath your feet, unending sunsets, and sea life all wrapped up in a cloak of unyielding hope, this is the book for you. Yes, summer is over, but I chose to wait for the tourists to leave the beaches before diving into this lovely and refreshing story of new beginnings.
Please pull up a chair beside the water and experience Gull Island at its finest.

Pull up a comfy chair in the sun and let the warmth and rays of sunshine that you find in the pages of this book fill your heart with surprise and delight. I was gifted an arc copy of this book for an honest review. I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to anyone who takes pleasure in reading romance novels while on summer holidays.
I enjoyed this book and the slow burn connection. Kate and Luke grabbed my heart and had me rooting for them the entire story. The settings, both Gull Island and Black Rock, were nicely crafted and both family backstories were thoroughly thought out and well written. I loved the characters, all of them for the most part were very well written. There were a few who either needed more face time or needed to be taken out. But that’s just my opinion. I love that the “climax/problem” wasn’t awful, no one did anyone horribly wrong and left you disliking them. I like that it left you just as heartbroken as the characters were. It’s also not a true Second Chance romance. The main characters have not loved, fallen apart, and made their way back together like in a true second chance romance. The second chance at love is really only for Kate. Which that doesn’t bother me, I just wanted to include that little tidbit. Characters I LOVED: Obviously Kate and Luke 👩🏻❤️👨🏻 CeCe and David (their love story = perfection)🖤 Jerome (ugh I needed more of him!!! I hope he gets A LOT more FaceTime in the next novels) 💙 Aunt Theresa (hilarious!!!) 🤣❤️ I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 bc the beginning felt like a rough draft, the first few chapters need to be edited better. There were grammatical errors and duplicate sentences back to back. In one part, the author mixed up the characters when describing a scene. She said Annie instead of Kate. And because of the 2 or 3 characters who just felt dropped in for a moment but didn’t add to the story really. If I could, I would rather give it 3.5 but that’s not an option. I rarely give out 5 stars- it has to really grab me and not let me go. It has to be a book I would reread. So 3.5 from me is good. Now, please don’t misunderstand- the story is great, it follows a typical feel good, slow burn romance layout, which is what I was looking for. Don’t pass this book up just because of the few things I didn’t particularly like. I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick, easy, feel good read.
SAND, SEA AND SECOND CHANCES by Catherine Michaels ⭐️ rating: 6/10
read if you like: 🏡 small town romances 🏖️ beach reads 🚞 environmental preservation 📕 Elin Hilderbrand’s earlier books 📍 the South
summary: This book is about Kate Fiore, a 30-something year old who heads to Gull Island, North Carolina for the summer after a difficult divorce and losing her job. She rents a house from Mae Gray, a local, with the plan to relax, ground herself and work at the local aquarium. But as soon as she arrives, she runs into Luke, a local Islander committed to the community and its environment. While he is initially skeptical of the outsider, Luke finds himself intrigued by Kate’s charm, willingness to learn, and love for the island. Will something happen between them and if so, can it last after the summer?
This book reminded me so much of Elin Hilderbrand’s early books set on Nantucket - just a love story dedicated to the island and its people. Luke and Kate are deeply developed characters, and it’s heartwarming to see their chemistry and dynamics evolve throughout the book. Luke’s relationship with his nephew, Dawson, is also incredibly sweet and adds fun energy to the story. I also loved the angle of Luke’s commitment to the preservation of the island’s environment and sustainability, as you don’t read a lot of romances with this angle! It also paints a beautiful picture of the island itself, and uses great sensory imagery and language to really make you feel like you’re there. The story is broken down by month, which really emphasizes the summer vibe, and alternates POV’s between Luke and Kate. The only downside is it is definitely a slow plot - there aren’t many twists and turns and everything is very predictable. But if you’re looking for a reliable summer read with a happy ending, this book is absolutely for you.
Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this advanced copy. Check this book out when it releases on July 17!

Book Review:
While I was drawn to the novel by its description, it took me a little while to really connect with the characters from this novel. Kate and Luke’s first meeting was, well, not as meet-cute as one might hope. The experiences Kate has of trying to fit in with a tightly knit Southern town are a bit tense and also relatable—although the town and aquarium welcome her warmly after a short while. About halfway through, however, I liked the characters more; as they opened up to each other and the story progressed, my interest also grew. Bonus: Sea Turtle Love! Overall I give this story four stars.
Thanks to Love Books Tours as well as the author and her publisher, for a review copy of this novel. All thoughts about the book are my own.
Love can become a medium of showing fickleness when expectations and trauma are not clearly communicated with two people, which can indeterminately cause more harm than good, irreversibly tying a person into a gnarly knot filled with fears and wounds, similar to our main characters Kate and Luke having faced their own love failures.
When they keep meeting, ebbing and flowing as per the course of the book, they find love and something unexpected by being able to breathe after the release of their fears. This was not an easy journey though, but beautiful enough that I wanted to keep reading even though plot points were getting resolved at every asynchronous turn.
The writing was stunning. The author hit it right out of the park by simulative sentencing that matched with the ebbs and flows of the story. The character study was another stunning arc to the book, showcasing the realness of the characters' fears, as unfurling them is not so easy as it might feel like in real life.
I enjoyed reading the book. It felt like a soothing interlude to my life. I have been saying this for a while that sometimes books pick me not the other way around. This stands true to all the books I have read this year.
Book Recommendation - Hell Yeah.
Thank you to Love books tour for providing me a free copy for a honest review
Sand, Sea, & Second Chances by author Catherine Michaels is an enchanting read that holds the attention throughout. It charts the course of a challenging romance, unfolding as it does against a backdrop of serene environmental charm and tranquility.
The clever narrative intertwines the challenges of a long-distance, complex relationship with those relating to environmental responsibilities and concerns. The author weaves the latter perfectly without overshadowing the slow burning romance between the main characters, Kate and Luke.
Being a city dweller, I immersed in the setting of Gull Island while learning about the hatchings of baby sea turtles and so much more, including coastal development and its concerns. The depiction of the Gull Island Aquarium highlights the vital preservation of sea turtle rehabilitation that allows friendships and rivalries to come to the fore as the story unfolds.
So many sensory details bring the setting and characters to life, evoking a sense of appreciation for a simpler existence.
Kate and Luke's backgrounds and personalities unfold during their slow-paced romance while tension builds relating to an anticipation for their relationship.
The inclusive ingredients of family, friendship and community make for a must read that I thoroughly recommend.
Dive into summer with this delightful beach read that will have you yearning for salty breezes and sandy toes. It's a lighthearted romance between a fish-out-of-water Northerner and a stubborn Southerner clashing and connecting in a charming seaside town. Kate and Luke, both flawed yet utterly endearing, steal your heart as their summer unfolds. You'll laugh out loud at the cast of quirky characters who add a dash of humor to their story.
But the true star here is the North Carolina setting. The author weaves a tapestry for the senses that will transport you onto the beach. Feel the caress of the ocean breeze, inhale the sweet fragrance of crape myrtle, and watch the sun sink into the glistening waves. The lush descriptions make the setting a character in itself, and a subtle ecological message about protecting the local marine life adds depth without being preachy.
This is a summer must-read! It's the perfect escape that will leave you with a warm, happy feeling long after you turn the last page.
This is the first book I've read by this author and it is the first in the Gull Island series.
I felt the book was a bit slow to start with but once it got going I flew through it. It is written in dual POV which I like.
Kate and Luke were lovely characters, both very different which caused many a tense encounter when they were working together. As they got to know one another better and let down their guard, you could see the potential for romance. I loved the character development of them both.
There is also a wonderful assortment of supporting characters which definitely added to the storyline. Too many to mention, but a few of my favourites were CeCe, David, Aunt Theresa and Jerome. I hope we see more of them in future books.
The sensitive topic of miscarriage is mentioned, but I felt this was done in a sensitive manner.
I really enjoyed this heartwarming read. If you like slow burn, small town romance I would definitely recommend this to you.
This was just the book I needed! Beautiful setting, characters I liked, and a story that made me smile. I enjoyed Kate, the main character, she is looking for a change after her world implodes and is spending the summer in Gull Island.I found myself invested in her life and her choices. The chemistry she had with Luke was fun to read and I liked how the slow-burn of their relationship felt realistic. Kate and Luke also had fantastic friends and these relationships added depth to the story. Of course the path to love is never easy and I felt the obstacles Kate and Luke faced were realistic and their solutions were perfect for the story. Catherine Michaels is now on my list of auto read authors! If you like sweet romances I highly recommend adding this to your summer reading.
Thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for providing a copy for my honest review.
Sand, Sea and Second Chances was the perfect palate cleanser after reading a lot of heavier & darker themed books, it was the perfect feel good, sweet, funny and heartwarming summer read. This is a closed door romance perfect if you're not a fan of the more open door romances.
This is a definite slow burn romance about second chances, new beginnings, finding yourself & healing from the past. I loved the two main characters and watching their relationship slowly develop, the opposites attract city girl small town boy is always a favourite of mine & the banter between the two was just brilliant.
The setting was perfect, small-town Island feel with colourful & wonderful characters, I could almost smell the sea air. This was a really enjoyable fun read.
I loved this easy to read second chance romance novel by Catherine Michaels. Such a great summer beach read, heartwarming with a hint of humour.
I could really relate to the character of Kate and loved that she got her second chance. This is definitely a slow-burn romance but I loved following the story and who doesn’t love it when the main characters fall head over heels in the end 😊
The other characters in the novel also brought a nice extra touch and the author did well to give just enough information to feel you got to know them but not so much that it took over the story.
I do so love a summery romcom set in a small town with colourful characters, cute dogs and kids, and island settings. I loved the talk of the turtles, and Dawson's sweet youthful exuberance helping the scaredy lady was just so cute. I loved Kate's family and their comments making her bush during their phone calls. Luke is a wonderful leading man. His love for his family and friends makes him very attractive. How could Kate resist?! It's a slow burn, light romance, I usually prefer a bit of heat, but this didn't bother me here. I loved the epilogue, and I'm hoping that when the author revisits Gull Island, it's to give Annie some well-deserved happiness!
📖📖 Book Review 📖📖 Life is notorious for throwing curveballs that can really derail your plans. But with patience, an open-mind, and some sand between your toes, it also has a really funny way of delivering exactly what you did not know you needed. Catherine Michaels writes an absolutely beautiful tale about dealing with life’s unfortunate challenges heads on and making lemonade out of lemons. Just as quickly summer seems to pass in real life, it does too in Sand, Sea and Second Chances as Kate discovers the charm of Gull Island as well as many of its residents, namely Luke. A heartwarming and wholesome love story absolutely perfect for this summer!
This is one of the most warm and fun reads I have read since dipping my toe into the romance genre being a fantasy girlie. I loved the world which Catherine has set up and then the characters that she has populated this island with. This is one of those stories which has a double meaning for me - it has the romance element and then it also has the marine conservation aspect which is amazing. This is truly a story of if you love someone then let them go and this is one of those tropes which never works in practice however our main characters finally realise that they belong together. I can wait to read the prequel and see where the residents stories go in the future.
A sweet and vibrant romance, with characters that grow together and connect. The backdrop of the cosy island and coastal life gives it a small town feel with limited privacy but a close knit community that supports each other, and is vary of change. It's a change in scene for Kate, but it's the perfect place for her to heal, find herself again and open her heart after her past relationship trauma. It's also a chance for Luke to connect and find his perfect woman, even if things were tense between them at the start. It's a sweet summer read with slow burn chemistry and tension, some environmental drama, and a picturesque island backdrop.
I love that this is set in a coastal town in North Carolina! I have family there and love to visit and this book definitely made me feel like I was on the coast!
I love it when the FMC is a little older (she’s in her 30s) and reinventing herself. Kate was looking for a fresh start and never expected to meet someone like Luke! I loved the way Kate and Luke clashed - they had this great tension between them. Both of them had some healing to do (there are some emotional scenes!!)
This was a sweet story (almost Hallmark vibes) and it a perfect beach or summer read! I really enjoyed some of the side characters too!

This book is a delightful summer read! The blend of unexpected attraction and reluctance for change makes for an intriguing romance. Kate's journey to a charming small town in North Carolina to be with her best friend, and her encounter with the hardworking and protective Luke, sets the stage for a captivating story. The vibrant setting, colorful characters, and the author's beautiful, heartfelt writing make this a must-read. It offers a mix of fun, entertainment, and heartbreaking moments. Will Kate and Luke find their happy ending? Definitely a perfect addition to any summer reading list!
"Sand, Sea, & Second Chances," by Catherine Michaels is a heartwarming romance story with emotional chemistry between characters, Luke and Kate.
Kate Fiore relocates to a new location after her divorce and takes on a summer marketing position at an aquarium on Gull Island. She finds herself at odds with a stubborn local landscape architect, Luke McAllister. Readers will turn the pages as they cheer them on to overcome their differences.
I enjoyed the characters and how they evolved and the descriptions of the beachy North Carolina setting.
Small Town Boy X City Girl Southern Boy X Yankee Girl Slow Burn Closed Door
I enjoyed this book. The scenery descriptions were my favorite part. I could vividly picture Gull Island and I would love to visit there sometime. The characters, especially the main characters, were written very well. You could feel the heartbreak that Kate recently went through and I wanted to be a shoulder that she could cry on. One of the opening scenes, when Kate locks herself out, is a classic city girl in a small town move.
Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion.
