After an underwhelming previous volume, the magic is absolutely back in this one. Even Risa’s more awkward moments are balanced by how much she’s growing into her own person rather than just the awkward girl with the delinquent boyfriend.
She decides to really put herself out there for the festival and this festival absolutely kills it. Her class’ booth is one of the funniest ideas I’ve seen in ages - I wish more manga went wacky with their stuff - and the way the main plot subverts the very obvious drama it looks like it’s chasing for something else entirely is a thing of beauty.
When you care for somebody you really should give them more than a little leeway in the trust department and that’s quietly reinforced here amongst some incredible moments. The conclusion of the festival is flat-out beautiful and very fun (mortifying Risa takes so little effort).
There’s also a rival for Zen’s affections, except she isn’t, but she’s also growing really close to Risa before she realizes the latter is dating her crush and that makes for a way more interesting storyline than yet another No Chance Rival. This manga has an uncanny knack for knowing exactly where to aim its narrative (minus last volume).
It’s also smartly written - you don’t need to be told that one of Zen’s kisses is not out of affection, but possessive jealousy; it’s absolutely obvious from the context and the visuals. This is a damn strong series that gets so much right.
Another brilliant volume of a story about being more than what society would say you are. Plus the continued deployment of those bug-eyed reactions that make me laugh almost every time.
"So I trust you, Zen…and all the people who support you."
I think this is honestly my favorite volume yet, and I was close to tears near the end!
Maybe that sounds dramatic, but I know my reaction is directly from another favorite series I read and absolutely hating the direction the story went. I was terrified that this could be another series like that because WHY did a female interloper come on the scene?! And WHY did our male interloper start stirring the pot?! I was so angry at him for that!! On the flip side, though, I actually DO really like the female interloper and was sad to realize that she has been the person who wants to meet Zen.
However, it's because of both of them that made this volume my favorite in that when insecurity and mistrust started to strike, Risa goes all out with a declaration of saying she fully trusts Zen. I could have cried because rather than prolonging something with a lack of good communication and fears unvoiced, Risa "took charge," so to speak. We know Zen has been head over heels for her and wants to be with her forever, but Risa has been harder to read. It's only through her internal dialogue that we see how much she cares for Zen, wants to touch him, and wants to know everything about him.
I think it's what really made the ending so impactful and also makes me very excited for Risa's overall character growth. She is being so brave and I'm proud of her for stepping outside her comfort zone little by little! It was a joy to see her be straightforward in other ways that didn't necessarily involve her head butting Zen or saying "no thank you" with her hand up. LOL!
She is truly a wonderful character, and I can't wait to read the next volume since I accidentally bought that volume before this one! LOL!
Okay, I am in love with this story! I love how Risa is quite assertive, even though she is shy. And even though she is embarrassed by what she feels, she still communicates with Zen about it. Like when she honestly told him that she does see him as a guy. Her character development is nice and steady and I feel happy seeing her world expand.
I love Zen. He is thoughtful, respectful and understanding with Risa, giving her space even though he wants to be with her all the time and how they work out compromises. The level of comunication between them is making me so happy! I also loved the fact that while Zen is the more assertive one, Risa also had her chances to be the first one to approach him when he was giving her space and that also allowed her to learn new things. His ideas for dates are so adorable and refreshing 😆
Honestly my heart is both melting and being full, watching these two falling even deeper in love the more they discover about each other. I love how although their relationship is quite pure amd respectful at this point, they still long for each other's touch and how natural it feels.
I can keep on gushing about this story and the other characters, but I'll stop here xD
GAH. I freaking adore this series! I binged volumes 1-4 a few months ago and have been waiting for this volume for ages.
It's stinking cute and refreshing!
RECAP: Learn more about the person Zen is. Risa is on the festival committee and meets another girl who's bubbly. Lo and behold, that girl has a thing for Zen. Kissing in the library. Learning more about Zen's past. Festival, the guys are accused of stealing, Risa defends them, ending with Risa and Zen confessing they want to be together always hehe.
OMG THIS VOLUME WAS SOO CUTE!! risa confessing! the school festival bit was so wholesome, especially the way she put her trust in him and didn’t let the rumors get to her 🥹💘✨ vol 6 when?! 😭
4 stars. I like the unique ways this is developing. It is cool how it subverts established tropes while still including them. I'm missing the whirlwind of the romantic feelings of the beginning of the story, but perhaps that will make it strong as a whole series as relationships aren't just whirlwinds, generally.

This volume was great! I loved to see them getting closer, Risa putting her trust on Zen and his friends and backing him up is lovely, I enjoyed seeing Risa be relied on because of the school festival, she’s growing and getting out of her comfort zone. The last scene reminded me of that lantern scene from Tangled, it was magical, Risa + Zen!
That was so wholesome. It's so beautiful *wipes tear* to see these two communicating clearly and NOT making assumptions or jumping to conclusions for the sake of artificial drama.
The way they support each other and help each other become better human beings... Please, Universe, let there be more romance like this !!
Super cute volume - Zen and Risa are learning to be more open with each other, and Risa made great leaps in her social life. We’ll see what this Kuma girl is like, but she’s not much of a rival so far.

Still so stinking cute! I wonder how Kuma will affect Risa and Zen’s relationship. I love that Risa trusts Zen and doesn’t need an explanation about his past. Also Risa and Zen getting more touchy feely, eek! I’m excited for the next volume.
