The Book of the Watchers #2

Angel of Earth & Bone

Rate this book
A water angel with a bounty on her head…

Six weeks isn’t long enough to heal a broken heart. Not for River Harlow, who lost her best friend, Javi; her mentor, Olivia; her lover, Ryder—her entire life—in what feels like the blink of an eye. Yet, as the new Angel of Water and with a bounty on her head placed by the conniving enemy realm, the only thing left to do is try to move on.

A demon hunter torn between duty and desire…

To take back her life, River stands against Chet, the horrific guy-turned-wolf who assaulted her at a bonfire. But when she tries to testify against him at the werewolf tribunal, she, and her remaining friends, realize he has not only slithered into the welcome arms of the enemy, but the enemy is very much among them—including ex-boyfriend Ryder. Even after a heated exchange in the forest, she can’t tell if he’s hunting or helping her.

A deadly mission to the land of the elves…

Finding the three other elemental archangels, the Watchers, might be her only hope of saving the realm. On a dangerous search abroad to find the Angel of Earth, her strength, hope, and heart are tested in the deceitfully glittering realm of the Huldufólk. The Queen of the Elves strikes a bargain with River to take her to the Angel of Earth, but elves always demand payment for their magic, and River owes her dues—in bones and blood.

Angel of Earth & Bone is the second book in an urban fantasy romance series about the secret heiress to a powerful archangel and the demon hunter sent to destroy her. Perfect for fans of the Twilight Saga, The Dark Elements series, and the City of Thorns trilogy (through a young adult lens).

An exciting adventure full of mysteries, lies, and secrets! I enjoyed this sequel that presented a whole new host of characters and problems.

I enjoyed the new characters and friendships that were made in the story. I also love this new world and how things are evolving and growing. Nothing is as it seems and once you think you know something you really don’t.

I also really enjoyed the growth in River’s character. She’s finally discovering more about herself and gaining her inner strength and confidence to be the best she can be.

I can’t wait to see where things go from here especially with that ending!

Some tropes in here were; quest, self-discovery, mysteries, magic, angels/demons, elves, friendships, morally grey characters, magical creatures, dagger to the throat, high stakes, brief enemies to lovers, second chance romance (that hopefully gets more screen time in the next book ;)), and more!

I read book 1 last year and loved it. This series is perfect for fans of Twilight, City of Thorns and shadow hunters !✨

The sequel starts off right after the events of book 1, with River as the new Angel of water and with her life completely turned upside down after loss and betrayal. We fall right into action as they are suddenly attacked as she testifies against the repulsive Chet at the werewolf tribunal. I love how fast paced the writing is which made it difficult to put down! Also can I just say RYDER OMG my heart was torn and didn’t know what way to go 🥲❤️ I enjoyed the sequel even more than book 1 which doesn’t happen often in series!!

What you can expect:
✨ found family
✨ enemies to lovers
✨ forbidden romance
✨ mental health rep
✨ FMC loves to surf 🏄
✨ dagger to the throat
✨ demons, werewolves & angels!

*Angel of Earth & Bone* is such an epic read! The action kicks off right away and doesn’t let up, making it super hard to put down. The magic feels even richer this time around, with some seriously cool new elements, including the addition of elves in their icy, mysterious kingdom—which adds a whole new layer to the world. At its core, though, this story really hits on themes of belonging and finding your place, which makes the emotional moments just as powerful as the action-packed ones. If you’re into fantasy with heart, adventure, and unforgettable magic, this one’s a must-read!

The gift book that keeps on giving.

When I say I loved this book, I freaking LOVED this book—and even that doesn’t feel strong enough to describe it.

This felt like a full-on cinematic experience. The plot played out before my eyes in tantalizing detail, never once feeling over-described. Maybe it’s my own travels around Iceland that helped me picture the settings so vividly, but regardless, every scene was depicted brilliantly, drawing me right into this breathtaking world.

River Harlow—what an FMC. Her character development is like a self-discovery package wrapped in overcoming trauma, navigating mental health struggles, and battling the loneliness of not fitting in, all while remaining kind and resilient despite everything thrown at her. Watching her journey unfold felt so authentic, and the way her growth was woven seamlessly into the story was chef’s kiss. There is just something so satisfying about seeing a character become the badass she was always meant to be!

And then there’s Ryder—the morally grey character who teeters on the edge of darkness, with love as the flicker of light keeping him from being consumed entirely. I feel like we’re on a journey with him, too. While his growth is more of a whisper in this book, he’s already captured my heart—questionable actions and all—because let’s be honest, we’re all a little lost sometimes. And sometimes, you need a bit of light (ahem, River) to guide you through the dark. Redeemable? You’ll have to wait and see.

Maybe it’s just me, but I couldn’t help but wish that all those times I felt like I didn’t belong meant I was part of a magical world too…

The found family trope absolutely shines in this book. These characters are awesome in their own ways, and they bring those warm, fuzzy feelings of “you’re not alone” and “we’ll be there for you no matter what.” The camaraderie and connection they share is palpable by the end, and the banter? The cheekiness? Oh, it’ll keep you smiling.

The storyline? Fresh, fascinating, and addictive. The twists and turns left me free-falling and on the edge of my seat. And while I may be all about those heavy-handed, romance-centered romantasies, the romance here—though more of a nod this time—hits just right. It allows the story to focus on quests, self-discovery, and personal development in all its badass, feminine-power glory.

This book truly has it all—action, heart, magic, belonging, and a spark that lingers long after you turn the final page.

Desperate—DESPERATE—for book 3. Please tell me there’s going to be a book 3…

Here is another book to add to the best sequels list!

Angel of Earth and Bone is the second book in an urban fantasy romance series following River, a girl who discovers she’s a Nephilim, and that she is the new Angel of Water after her mother passed away years ago.

I read the first book, Angel of Water and Shadow, a while ago and enjoyed it a lot. But this one managed to surpass my every expectation. In book 1 we see River grappling with loss and a power she doesn’t understand, and with her growing feelings for the mysterious Ryder. Now, in this second installment, River is still dealing with those things, as well as the loss of a very important friendship, a stinging betrayal (not gonna say who but…), AND a vision of doom that may belong to the past or the future. So we follow her in her quest to find the other elemental archangels while also escaping the demons hunting her, and this takes her to an Elven court thick with politics and schemes, friendships and foes. Needless to say, I loved this new setting in the story and the characters that are introduced. Is it my weakness for Elves? Not just that. There’s several characters among them that are either lovable or intriguing or both, and some that are very suspicious. I really hope we get to see more of the Elves in the next installments.

As for the relationships, I’m angsting for the broken friendship as well as the romance. Javi was one of my favorite characters in the first book so I’m hoping this isn’t the last we see of him. *cries into her keyboard* The romance burned slow compared to the first book and doubled down on the enemies to lovers. Am I worried for Ryder. Absolutely.

I’m looking forward to the next book in the series! I highly recommend this book to lovers of books like Shadowhunters!

If you're a fan of the Shadowhunters series by Cassandra Clare, then this series is one that needs to be on your radar! It follows a young woman from California who learns that she's a nephilim, and there's a lot of drama and romance that comes with this discovery.

Here are some things you can expect from the series at large:
⚔️ enemies to lovers
🩷 forbidden romance
🗡️ dagger to the throat scenes
🤫 "we shouldn't be doing this" moments
🫂 found family

I already enjoyed Angel of Water & Shadow a lot, but Angel of Earth and Bone brought out some new facets to this story that made it different, but equally enjoyable. This book was less romance focused than its predecessor and had a really great political side that I loved (and it involves elves!) However the romance was still an important part of this story. The slow burn that characterizes the majority of the book creates am interesting dynamic where River feels Ryder is her enemy, but he is utterly obsessed with her (which is honestly my FAVORITE!) I cannot wait to see how their dynamic continues to evolve in the next book.

Thank you to the author for the free copy! Opinions are my own.

4.5 rounded up.

Volume 2 in the Book of the Watchers series is packed with action, plot twists that will have your head spinning, unlikely friendships, heart pounding fiery romance, fantastical portals, and all the angels, demons, werewolves and fae to fulfil your fantasy needs! Throw in some lore and found family, mythological creatures and mental health rep and I am spellbound by this story!!

In this installment, the story follows River, a water angel who is searching for the remaining elemental angels after the heart shattering loss of her mother. She leaves Cali and heads out on a dangerous journey in hopes of escaping the bounty that has been placed on her head. Ryder, her ex, seems to be sending mixed signals on his allegiance after she finds him at the werewolf tribunal where she testifies against her attacker. After a heated argument with Ryder that leaves her feeling betrayed, her list of friends is growing thin. She eventually makes her way to Iceland where the fjords of the Elven people offer the answers she is seeking, but they always demand payment for their magic. Is she strong enough to pay the cost that is being asked, or will she fold under the pressure?

Although I did not read book 1 prior to reading book 2, I was not lost for the most part and was still able to really enjoy the story. With vivid and imaginative writing, beautiful character development that was inspiring and realistically done, this was an enchanting and has me running for more of this series.

The book takes off right where Angel Of Water and Shadow ended— after six weeks time (many things happened in between).

River Harlow, her character development was the most inspiring— her struggles to figure out everything, torn between love & betrayal, losing the ones she loved. There was this very human quality of self-doubt, frustration & hopelessness due to losses in life explained by her character dynamics.

Ryder— is going to steal away your heart after even breaking it. One of the qualities that I never thought I'd see in his character was desparation. There's so many layers to get the character arc of Ryder, I'm looking forward to it.

Most of the world building is based on the questions left unanswered— legends, wars, myths and the magic system as whole— mostly The Emperyan. And there are elves— a whole damn kingdom which is the major plot There's a beautiful way on which the magic had the hidden way of showing the themes— angels & demons are the either sides of the coin.

There are so many new characters introduced, either you'll love or love to hate. Frejya, Gunnar and Olivia will always have my heart. These characters were a wonderful addition to the plot and overall theme of the book.

There's plenty amount of romance, angsty, and knife to throat moments— that will make the whole chemistry between River and Ryder more enjoyable!

This is an ARC review, and is voluntary left by me.

Oh hello there, badass River!
This was such a fun book that really showcased the tenacity of the FMC. She has had to deal with the hurdles of grief (and betrayal from book 1) but is really coming into her own power throughout this book.
You meet several new characters in this book, but it was never overwhelming. The descriptions of the new world of elves in Iceland were perfect for this time of year and I felt like the pacing of the book was spot on. There's a lot of fun side quests that she has to undergo but my favorite was the magical tattoo she gets and also the meeting of the legend of Gryla! Loved that scene.
The MMC isn't the main focus for this book. I did miss him a little (who wouldn't miss Ryder and his mouth?!) but I can see how shifting the focus on the character arc for River to become who she needs to become for book 3 is important because there is a pretty big reveal at the end involving Ryder.
They do get one hot and heavy scene that makes me so excited to see where this goes for the next book.
Overall the writing style is amazing and flows so well between the action and the internal thoughts of River and I believe anyone who loves fantasy with fast paced action sequences, meeting new mythical creatures, and finding your inner strength will love this series!

"I still didn't know who I was. Something between angel and human; heiress and cursed; powerful and powerless."
This quote really captures the spirit of River's journey throughout Angel of Earth & Bone. In the first book, she's introduced to this brand new world, reacting to it all, but in this sequel she has to decide what she wants to do in it. While frustratingly naive at times (and way more trusting than I have been as a solo female traveler!), River navigates this new world, role, and pressure well given how little knowledge she has of it (and how little others are willing to offer her). She's forced to reflect on her choices and mistakes in the past and learn from them. This is a strong story of internal growth but the plot remained fairly engaging. New characters, both friend and foe, keep River on her toes and facing new challenges. Eldi and Ljos are some of my favorites!! They were both so fun in different ways and I loved the scenes with them. In addition, this world of demons and angels and more keeps expanding; I really enjoyed how we got more insight into the other factions and the ways in which they have and interact with magic. And of course, we got some snippets of romance as well. Our favorite tattooed hunter had less of a starring role in this one, but don't fear, he got his moments to shine (literally, in metallic paints, hehe iykyk) and so did some others.
Overall, I felt that this was a solid follow up that continues to build the overarching conflict of the series and maintains the self-discovery theme and emotive writing from the first.

Thank you to the author for the e-arc! All thoughts are my own :)

I read ANGEL OF EARTH AND BONE by Tory Guyon for the book review tour hosted by the author and R&R Book Tours. Thank you to both for inviting me along and for the gifted e-arc. I loved this action-packed Urban Fantasy.

This book takes up where Angel of Water and Wind left off. River is on a mission to essentially save the world. In book 1 there were twists, turns, and betrayals. Now, River is dealing with the fallout from all of that.

Ryder is trying to be the man Tory needs him to be. But, he is being pulled in so many directions, it's looking iffy. I really want these two to get their happily ever after.

The worldbuilding, character development, and pacing is very well done. I love the suspense, the quest, and the forbidden romance. There are twists and turns that will keep you guessing. I laughed and cried. This book is so good! I can't wait for the next installment.

I highly recommend ANGEL OF EARTH AND BONE (after reading Angel of Water and Wind) to fans of YA Urban Fantasy, meddling gods, angels, demons, life or death quest, hidden magic, dark magic, forbidden romance, slow-burn romance, and enemies-to-lovers.

Tory does it again! In Angel of Earth and Bone, River’s journey takes her from Santa Cruz dwarves to Icelandic elves, and I am here for it! The world created was beautiful, and I loved all of the antagonists that were woven in. It’s clear the author really *cough* stretches her wings and dove further into fantasy, which was so much fun. Everything flows beautifully.

The story is fast paced, and River grows a ton throughout this book. It’s fun to see the growth from book 1, but then by the end of book 2, I was mentally clapping for her.

Now I’m sure there are Ryder fans out there, like me, and though he doesn’t have as big of a role in this book, the moments we do get with him are fantastic. He’s got it so bad for River, and it’s fantastic.

“What about you? Who do you fight for?”
“You.”

😍

The book wraps up very satisfyingly, but there’s still so much intrigue for following books. I can’t wait for more of this world! Also, I need to know that Gaia gets her hot dog.

In Angel of Earth & Bone we are immersed in a whirlwind of heartbreak, betrayal, and resilience as River Harlow navigates her new reality as the Angel of Water. Still reeling from devastating losses, River must rise to the challenge of protecting her realm while enemies close in from every direction. Among those threats is her ex, Ryder, whose motives and loyalties remain unclear (is he hunting her or helping her?!).

River’s journey to restore balance and protect her realm is anything but simple. With newfound powers and unexpected companions, she ventures to the realm of the Huldufolk (hello Iceland!) where the enchanting yet treacherous world of the Elven Queen demands impossible choices. Faced with cunning elves, dangerous alliances, and steep magical costs, River must decide who to trust and what deals are worth making to survive.

I will be *not so* patiently waiting to follow River on her next quest… Akosua we’re coming for you!

I received this as an ARC and decided to save it as my first book of 2025 and it did not disappoint! Angel of Water & Shadow was written so well, but Guyon really dove deeper into the fantasy, characters, and world in Angel of Earth & Bone.

Grieving the loss of everyone she loved, River Harlow, the new Angel of Water, is torn between healing her broken heart and surviving the bounty placed on her head. As she embarks on a dangerous journey to find the missing Angel of Earth, she’s drawn into a tangled web of desire and betrayal, especially with her ex-lover Ryder, whose loyalty is uncertain. In a realm of glittering treachery, River must navigate powerful alliances, dark bargains, and a love that may either save her or destroy her.

I just adore all of the paranormal and fantasy that is woven into this book series. It has so many of the things I love and more. I can't wait to see what comes next and I will be eagerly awaiting Guyon's next book!!

River Harlow’s journey as the Angel of Water is nothing short of captivating in Angel of Earth & Bone, the second installment in this thrilling urban fantasy romance series. Packed with heartache, resilience, and relentless action, this book effortlessly balances emotional depth and high-stakes adventure.

The mission to find the Angel of Earth takes River to the enchanting yet dangerous world of the elves. The Queen of the Elves is both captivating and terrifying, and her demands for magic come with a chilling cost. This part of the story really stood out with its vivid worldbuilding and high-stakes decisions.

What I loved most is how real River’s grief and determination feel. She’s tough, but the story doesn’t hide her pain, making her journey all the more relatable.

If you’re into powerful heroines, complex romances, and high-stakes adventures, you’ll love Angel of Earth & Bone. It’s a story about healing, resilience, and finding hope even in the darkest moments.

I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review, all thoughts and rating are my own.

I'm obsessed. I need more Reckless River!

If you're craving a fantasy with angels and demoms, fae and werewolves, myths and lore, and a war between realms- you need this series!

It is so much fun, with angst and friendships in the making that I can't wait to see evolve even more in the next sequel. I definitely enjoyed this one more than book one and have an even better feeling about the next!

The mythical beasts... the steamy forbidden romance.... the person River essentially saves towards the end that made me start crying as soon as I saw where it was going... it's all so well done and giving me all the emotions 💛💛💛💛🥹

Also as I said in my review for book one, I can attest to the fact this series is a great recommendation for fans of the Shadowhunter books!

I absolutely loved it!

It really added to Book 1 and I honestly can't wait for Book 3!

As River's journey continues you will start to see a lot of growth from the first one. As people continue to doubt her and what she's capable of, she starts to realize if she doesn't believe in herself then how is anyone else going to believe in her?

River's character development is on point. The ending of this may be a cliffhanger and a fabulous one at that, but it's such an appropriate way to end book 2 that it makes book 3 that exciting to wait for!

Everything you think you know isn't what you believe and book 2 is a real test of River's trust in people and making new friends where she's not used to standing out. Absolutely loved it!

Thank you so much for making me part of the ARC team to read this wonderful story!

This book took me from the beaches of California to an icy elf kingdom in Iceland and it was such a thrilling adventure! The world building was so immersive and beautiful. And the new places brought new characters, some friends and some not so friendly. I loved the new friendships River found amongst the Elves, even the one that initially began as enemies. Speaking of enemies, I was rooting for Ryder but for a while there he really had me second guessing how he was going to possibly redeem himself 👀.

River did a lot of growing and maturing in this sequel and I could feel the growing pains. Sometimes she seemed too naive in her actions after everything she’d already experienced. The portrayal of mental health struggles is done really well. She’s come so far but still has a difficult journey ahead. But that beautiful ending scene has me so excited for her next adventure!

Thanks to the author for the eARC.

This book took the most unexpected but most magical turn, and it caught me so off guard. I loved it. My interest was piqued the entire time. There was no downtime or a place where the story dragged.

This book picks up with River learning how to navigate life as an archangel. She must uproot her life in Cali to travel across the country in search of the Angel of Earth. I could feel the heartbreak from the character’s relationship and friendship hardships. The whole time I kept waiting for Ryder to make his appearance and redemption. The ending didn’t give me what I wanted, but it set us up for the next book. I’m secretly hoping he gets it then. Is that toxic of me? Oh well, he couldn’t help it.

🖤Dagger to the Throat
🖤Lovers to enemies

River is continuing her adventure, this time with the power of water on her side. She's figuring out what to do with her newfound role, along with the heartbreak and betrayal of Ryder. River is doing her best to find her way to Gaia, but of course it isn't as simple as it sounds.

Making her way through obstacles with new traveling companions, she finds herself in front of the Elven Queen, jumping through even more hoops for the answers she seeks. Deciding who to trust and what deals are worth making becomes her only way to survive.

This was fast paced and I was completely drawn in!

I have decided when I die I want a pyre burial, please let everyone know.

Our Watcher story continue with River on her search for the remaining angels after her life was turned upside down for the umpteenth time since her mom’s passing. After we learn the darkness is only spreading in the battle of realms, we head to the fjords and glaciers of Iceland and the Elven people. With a mix of snow, cold and folklore River faces a kingdom that is not quite what it seems.

After sixteen long months of pouring my heart and soul into this story, it’s finally out in the world.
There were many moments throughout writing this book where, like River, I thoroughly doubted myself—where I leaned too far into the inner critic and convinced myself I wasn’t good enough, strong enough, skilled enough, liked enough. But… I pushed past everything telling me I couldn’t.

And I did it.

This part of River's journey—of my journey—will always have a special place in my heart.

This sequel to the Angel of Water & Shadow is an awesome read! With it being the second in the series, I don't want to spoil too much, but we get to travel through portals to some fun (and scary) worlds/dimensions. There are a lot of plot twists, betrayals, and surprising friendships!

The epilogue has left me itching for the next book! I've really enjoyed this series so far and I am excited to see where it goes 🤗

This book picks up right after the events of the first book. River is devastated by the events in the first book and doesn’t know where to go from here. When she gets a hint of where the other angels are she jumps on a plane to enter a new world. When the games the elves are playing with her come to head she invokes an ancient law that puts her life in danger again. I really enjoyed this second book and growth we see in River. I can’t wait to see what happens next

Loved this book. The mix of characters is so unique and sometimes you’re just as surprised as River to see them in there. I loved the story line, it’s different and unique and it kept me guessing. I thought it was going to go one way based on the ending of the first book but it honestly went a whole different way. I’m so excited to see how things develop with Ryder and where the story goes next. I wish I didn’t have to wait but will be excited to do a reread for when the next one comes out!

First I have to say that I loved reading Angel of Earth and Bone. I found it to be very fast paced and full on exciting energy. I loved how the FMC fought her way through many tight spots. I was pulled into the story and where I digested every scene that left me wanting more; even though the ending left me on a happy note and thinking that the main character's adventure isn't over yet.
The MMC I had to grow to love him, as I found him to be the perfect antagonist. He kept me on my toes and wondering when he was going to show up next.
so if you love reading Action, Romance, Adventure, Amazing Battles, Angelic and Demonic battles then this book is for you.

This is book 2 in The Book of the Watchers series and it was better than the first! The world building was excellent. Everything is so well described that you felt like you were in the eleven world in Iceland! We get to meet some new characters which I loved. River comes into her own. Her journey through grief, betrayal, and loneliness, to becoming the strong, resilient warrior she needed to be was inspiring. If you love fantasy with romance, action, mythical beings, you will love this read!
